Consensus of Opinion of the Painesville Oversight Committee

A meeting was held by the POC on 5-17-11 to discuss pending legislation and concerns of residents of Painesville. A position paper was requested on the location of city council meetings and procedures.

We present two items for consideration and change: First, that visitor’s comments be moved to the beginning of council meetings. Comments need to be presented first for consideration or explained before council makes decisions and votes on issues. Close to a 2 hour meeting before citizens can speak is too long for some residents to be away from families and too long for many to sit on wooden pews. We feel both are valid reasons for this request.

Item Two: We ask the council and administration to move city council meetings to the Hanlon Media Center. The city has already rebated $150,000.00 in costs back to the school system. We feel the people have the right and council has the obligation to provide a state of the art facility. This would be a much improved format where comfortable seating and sightlines are far superior for our citizens, elderly and disabled along with adequate parking which we believe makes this an easy choice for council.

The Painesville Oversight Committee is a bi-partisan organization with members from all political parties including Independents. Our mission is to question procedures, positions and issues; bring facts to light that will help voters understand issues that will affect our quality of life in Painesville. We welcome new members and contributions to help bring transparency to government.

Just who do you think you are to CHANGE these items? There are policies, procedures, charters and the like. You can't get a group of small-narrow minded people together, set demands to change dumb things.

A councilman proposed this idea afew months ago on moving the meetings to Harvey. After comments made at last months meeting going over the pro's and con's Harvey's media center made sense to use for council meetings. Moving the visitors time back to the front gives more residents a chance to make a statement. Me I'll sit on that wood pew til midnight if I have too.
Change dumb things uh?

To WWYD...just who do you think you are to question Term's (or anyone else's right) to ask for change? Or are you one of those blind sheep that follows whatever the fearless leaders tell you just because they are in a position of authority? I bet you were one of those kids that jumped off a lot of bridges following your friends.

Seriously...are you saying that bad laws, regulations, rules etc should remain just because they're there? Government is a human institution which means that it is fallable and susceptible to error. Your post has to be the single most ignorant one that I have read on this blog. It is a perfect example of what is wrong with this city.

REW I missed something? I thought WWYD was using sarcasm. [Change dumb things] I guess its how you read it.
You have to wonder how a city thats over 150 years old doesn't have a council chamber?
Harvey is a good choice. We payed for it we might as well use it.

There needs to be a separation between city and school.
Have you not heard how awful Harvey is? It has always had a bad rap but with all the gang population it's worse than ever now.

First we can't have POC meetings at Chester's Restaurant now we can't have city council meetings at Harvey? Where do you people all live in Veterans Park?
Maybe it's time the good people of Painesville took their town and schools back and put them into peoples hands that care?
We paid for that media center we should at least use it twice a month.

THE COUNCIL MTGS. ARE FOR THE COUNCIL TO DO BIZ. NOT TO MAKE THE PUBLIC FEEL GOOD.

Yes 6:59 they do the BIZ, but everyone in Painesville is PAYIN' for it.
Seems certain members of council along with some in the administration would love to do it in the cover of darkness?

The whole purpose of council is to make the general public feel good....it is their dime, after all.

some city council mtgs. do not have public comment time, it is not a rule, they do not have to let you talk.

9:52 Yes that might also be the worse move city council could take. As I think about it isn't Channel 12 public access? Maybe someone or some group would want to use this to respond to council business?

I know the Rally Team has been working very hard for a long time on the E-Verify, and trying to get our state to utilize it, to no avail, as far as I know. There is one government person who is helping. Forgot his name right at this moment. Will have to go look it up. Their website is grassroots rally team. org. I know the rally team and this government guy can use all the help they can get. If they get that passed, it will be the beginning - a BIG BEGINNING - of ridding our state of illegals!

Here's some info I ran across and find very interesting. I did not know this before. In 1942, we had a program called the Bracero Program. It was an agreement about the importation of temporary contract laborers from Mexico to the U.S. This was under Franklin D. Roosevelt. After the expiration of the initial agreement in 1947, it was continued IN AGRICULTURE under several laws and agreements until its formal end in 1964.

So we have had agreements with Mexico in the past for temporary agriculture workers. And that is what we need now, so we can get all the rest out. When their year is up, they go home to be replaced by the next ones on the list.
