"COUNCIL MEETING 05/16/11"

Council meeting Monday will include a presentation by Mr. Green concerning the electric department.
Also second reading on the 144 homes to be built in Windmill Estates [east of Heisley Park to the Road to Nowhere.]
Looks like a tight fit.
Parking Penalties will be discussed with a sliding fee included in the discussion.
We have to build a 4000 sq. ft $500,000 building to house the Vadadium Redox Battery. Will the grant pay for that or will Painesville?
Special recognition for five T.W. Harvey Valedictorians also on the agenda.
Also, the third reading and a vote on the Infrastructure improvement to the water lines will also be on the agenda (unless it is tabled).
One thing I can only hope is that some councilman asks why laying almost a mile of water pipe on Elm St. would cost almost a million dollars. Yet in Saturdays News-Herald 05/14/11 Aqua Ohio will be laying 5250 feet of replacement waterline in Kirtland for only $350,000?
Now I know the paper sometimes screws-up with numbers but this figure must be verified by the administratration if we are to move forward with any water line replacement in the city. The news article also mentioned in Mentor replacing 6 inch pipe with 8 inch pipe over 1600 feet for $200,000.
The administration must understand when we are being told a mile in Painesville would cost a million dollars how does Aqua Ohio do it at a third of the cost?

City officals were on hand to see first hand the flooding of Cedarbrook and Chestnuts St. after the rain Friday. They checked flooded basements and talked to the affected residents. They also witnessed water rising above the curbs to reach the sidewalks.

Painesville has 10,000 customers and Aqua Ohio 85,000 seems if we were honest we would realize our system can't compete with larger systems.
Council should explore selling the water division taking the money and improving Painesville. Plus all additional savings by not having employees dedicated to the water department.[pensions, hospitalization]
The water department must be able to prove they can compete with private companies.

I am grateful to you, Term, that you are pointing out the enormous prices that are thrown out around here for different projects. I just don't believe anything McMahon, Hada say (the rest of them don't matter, in my opinion -- they just go along with the main two), and I don't trust them in any way, shape or form to give us straight, honest info. This 10.00 per household increase they are talking about is ludicrous. It makes no sense, no COMMON sense, and it is not even fair. I don't trust them to tell us honestly even how much this infrastructure will cost and where is the previous money that we are still being charged for these improvements. If they were a little off on their calculations before, as they say, that does not mean that they need MILLIONS and MILLIONS more now on TOP of the other raise in rates that they already have in place for this reason. Again, I just smell a skunk all the way around. They probably need the money so they can sneak and pay for some of their million-dollar mistakes. All the work is not going to be done at one time anyway. I'll pay an extra 1.00/month if someone that I trust is allowed to see the books -- and I mean really SEE the books.

Who do we know for sure is going to run for office in this coming election? They need to start campaigning NOW.

Did you look over both contracts ?

Does Elm include road and storm water inprovments, curbs, drains Misc.....

Wow you just jump on everything.

7:31 Well as far as I can tell there are no storm drains and for sure no curbs. All I'm asking for is an explaination.
Now neither of those two items were ever mentioned by the city manager, wow.

You jump on everything is an understatement. What qualifies you to know about storm/ sanitary sewers, storm water, illegal aliens, infrastructures of a city, police/fire departments, street repair, sign posting, electrical-wind farm, coal power, building new homes, etc.? I could go on and on. You criticize everyone in this city. Have you ever stopped and thought if you weren't such an expert windbag, the ones who need to would pay more attention to what you say.

Term have the city stop the rain so I can mow the grass..Please!!

9:33 Yes I guess your right, I'm no expert on any of the above metioned items. I am a resident of this city and the last time I checked it was still my right to ask questions. I guess my question is how do you know the people in charge are doing the right things?
What qualifies me? I just want to know. When I listen to city leaders tell me a mile of new water pipe costs a million dollars and I read in the paper someone is doing it for $350,000 I get curious? Why don't you? When we have a city leadership that shows no interest in illegals living here,I get curious? When at least three times since February I have cleaning backed-up storm water out of a basement, I get curious. The streets are in disarray I get curious, why don't you? When two city offical state in an open meeting that "regionalization of our fire department will cost us more money" I get curious. Go look at the swamp they want to put 144 more homes in Painesville. I get curious where is all that water going to go? Along with who's buying houses in this market? Windmill estates more like Propeller Estates.Seemed we were promised a bridge over those tracks, what happened?
Millstone no expert but when will those people get their money, would they have already received it if Painesville had stayed out of it? Where will the millions come from to pay for that failed AMP-OHIO power plant? Where's that Urgent Care Center promised to be up and running in April 2010? When will the other shoe drop when our EMS unit can't respond because they are at Cobblestone because of fiscal responsibility? Downtown master plan Streetscapes, is that the answer? No expert never claimed to be just someone very curious where all the moneys going. Why aren't you?
I guess anyone including myself that questions anything is labeled an "expert troublemaker"

To 9:33: There are plenty of people who very much appreciate what Term and the others have done/are doing for our city. If you had any idea the changes that have already been undertaken/things not done and/or things done because of Term and friends attention to the issue(s)I think that you may appreciate it, too. I read your post and see a person who does not understand the huge problems this city has, and the enormous need for oversight, which Term and the other dedicated citizens are providing. Again, I think if you do not understand, it is because you are not informed enough. It would also probably be good to point out here that it is not Term making every post about every thing - meaning all opinions/information on this site are not his/his fault. If this was MY site, I would suggest you go elsewhere for a blog if you are so unhappy with the help/information here.

9:33, I can't say what makes term an expert on anything except illegals. I would consider anyone living in the city an expert on that issue. You live day in and day out with the problem and you become an expert on all the problems it creates, maybe not on how to solve it.

5 Valedictorians? I will be the first to congratulate these students, but 5? I have never heard of 5 before.

Not trying to belittle their success but did they award the only ones who attended school or one from each ethnic group? Just seems odd that for the worst school system in the county to have 5 Valedictorians.

I for one really appreciate reading this blog. I dont pretend to know all the issues, but I do think that unless the ordinary man stands up and asks questions of those in power, the power become all consuming. That does not go simply for local politics, but all aspects of life.

If you shine a light on them and they scurry away and hide, chances are they are up to no good. If they are unwilling to answer a question, it makes me suspicious they know the answer is not good.

If they claim they know, yet refuse to back it up, they are far worse than those who admit ignorance. "The wise man is the man who knows he does not know".

Personally I am about to leave Painesville as I have a child of school age this fall and will not send him to these schools. I cannot sell my house as no one wants to move to Painesville who has kids, and my house is designed for a family. I am taking a huge financial hit to make sure my child is educated well. Everyone I have spoken to says they would not out of choice raise children here, now that is a problem the city should be dealing with, as if houses do not sell and people dont want to move here, how long does the city have? I look forward to seeing the mess the city officials are making, but from far away!

Term: your facts are wrong about the cost for water lines for Elm Street. $1.2 million per year over several years is needed to replace ALL the water lines that are not up to par, not just Elm. Elm Street's cost was about $300,000, per the calculations mentioned by the finance director, and the previous water manager.

Curious-NOT I have been told cats have 9-lives?
5:43 Many times council has been told a mile of water line costs a million. Elm St. for 3,000 feet had an estimate of $600,000?. I even mentioned it could be a misprint in the paper I just want it verified where does Painesville get its numbers?
5:55 Sad to see you go, but I understand your plight and until more influencial people then me realize this, and do something! People like yourself will continue to exit the city. Good-by and good luck.

Term, you missed another one. CM wants $500,000 for a 4000sq.ft. building to be built on city owned property? Check out what a building like this really only costs? I wonder if a council member will even question this tonight?

At May 16, 2011 at 11:36 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

It has become noticable that more money then what is needed for anything from traffic lights, to dump trucks so the question becomes what happens to the unsued money that is put back into the fund it was taken out of? No crime, but can this money be used for something else?
No 4000sq.ft. building being built on property already owned by the city should cost half that amount what gives? I believe that is city money and not grant money just the way its worded.

Taking a huge financial hit to move to a better school system. This is the number one source of more rentals and the problem just goes on and on. People who care about education are leaving in droves. New schools will do nothing to make things better. Less home ownership means less pride in neighborhood and less importance placed on education.

I wonder if every student in the past who received a grade point average above 4.0 should receive the honor of being class Valedictorian. That makes all my kids Valedictorians. Maybe next the attendance diploma will be changed to a Honors Diploma. Wonder how the colleges will react to being one of five or more Valedictorians. Maybe the same as the 50% grading policy. What a joke the school system is turning into.

At May 22, 2011 at 1:16 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I feel sorry for the child that had the highest grades and really WAS the Valedictorian. They were robbed of their honor of being the ONE who was the best. Very sad and stupid. What in the world is going on around here?

At May 24, 2011 at 9:53 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

This stuff about several "valedictorians" is not limited to Harvey (my alma matter from a hundred years ago, when there was only one valedictorian and one salutatorian--and believe you me, neither was moi! LOL). This sort of thing happens all over the country. I read a NY Times article about one high school that had over 20! I think a lot of it has to do with grade inflation, a practice also happening at a college level even at supposedly elite schools. No wonder kids today feel so entitled yet ignorant at the same time. Not so for Abby Miller. She sounds like an intelligent and motivated young woman and I wish her success. Painesville needs people like her.

At May 24, 2011 at 10:25 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

We can only hope the the present school board keeps an open mind for Abby. She after all she is a product of the system, with a desire to bring a new fresh approach.
No matter who they appoint to the seat that person will have to be elected to it this coming November.
Painesvilles future needs to keep Abby and other young residents around here.
