Our good friend graduated from the Naval Academy last week. (He looked GREAT in his dress whites!) He reported he was overwhelmed with good wishes from complete strangers thanking him for his service and wishing him well.

I'm very thankful for so many things in my life. My family lives an abundant life here in Painesville. At dinner today we will thank God and say a special prayer for my nephew, a Marine stationed in Afghanistan.

I hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving. I was told something this weekend and after checking it out I find out it is true. Do you know where HOLA gets their toys for their annual HOLA Christmas party? They get them from the Toys for Tots program. That's right. God Bless our Marines and all they do for children with this program, but do they know HOLA's history and Veronica Dahlberg's involvement with the protest that dragged the american flag through the streets of Painesville? Many marines have given their life for this flag and I find this unfathomable that VD is taking advantage of this very patriotic group to fund her anti american program. The marines need to sever ties with this group.
Ms. Veronica Dahlberg afew years back brought an individual to our Veterans Park. He spoke about taking their lands back.[He wasn't an Indian} All this with Ms. Dahlberg clapping in the background, never once standing up for her country.
Hard to believe we just had a funeral for a fallen Marine and this woman is reaching into the pockets of the people that preserve our freedoms.

If you know any mexican people then you'll know this is a non-derogatory term used to refer to US citizens. Mostly because the term "American" does not make sense to the rest of the Americans (all those people who live in the continent named "America", wich is every body from Alaska to argentina), and the word "Estadounidense" (UnitedStatean)is too long.

1:10pm, the latino children are eligible for toys through any of our programs. But my child is not eligible for any toys from HOLA. No one is trying to keep toys from your children, but to distribute them through HOLA is outrageous. Also, HOLA recipients are also putting themselves in for toys from other programs. HOLA does not share their names with any other group. So where the american children can only receive gifts from one program, the latino children can be put on multiple lists. I do not want the marines associated with HOLA and they will be hearing from me. It is total innocence on their part. VD is the one taking advantage of this patriotic group. VD, you are despicable.

You are all wrong I do live by the laws, and Term, don't tell me who I can or can't challenge, I have just as much right to post on this blog as anyone, I'm an American just like you, and so are my kids.
I see many Hispanics collecting from the various charitable organizations I volunteer at, but have yet to see a Hispanic actually work or volunteer any time helping anyone else. As 3:15 said, they feel free to collect from as many organizations as possible by VD's direction and my distain. I have volunteered through many organizations thru the years and I do so without expecting any thanks. Most people do at least say thank you, but I have yet to hear thanks from one Hispanic family.
I agree this is for the kids, but what kind of example do you set by not at least teaching the kids or the parents to say thank you. If you want my respect or the communities respect, then it is time you show some respect for our country and it's flag. Want to be treated the same as everyone else, then don't expect to stand in the front of every line for the free entitlements VD says you should get but the rest of us Gringos don't expect.
As far as collecting from multiple lists, to me that is fraud or just plain stealing. If you collect from one or maybe two sources, you are no longer in need, are you? The fact that people try to collect from more than one organization is a reality. The fact that the Hispanic's don't provide names of their people is very much a reality. My question is, why are these names being kept a secret? Are they really on more than one list or maybe illegal. Well, I have never heard of any church reporting anyone to the authorities. Have you? Especially not St. Mary's Painesville. So what does that leave? They are on more than one list.
In these tough economic times, do we want to just give as much as possible to VD's HOLA group, or try to serve as many needy children as possible? There is nothing racist about this. It is just the fair and, dare I say, the Christian thing to do.
And, according to the 1st Amendment, I CAN say, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

7:24pm, if you are receiving gifts from HOLA and are not needy, then you are abusing the system. Since the toys are coming from Toys for Tots, these are meant for needy children. If HOLA wants to give gifts to every latino family that is their business if it is toys that they purchase themselves. but taking gifts meant for the needy and giving to every latino family is abusive. If you are needy and are receiving gifts from HOLA, how many other organizations or churches are you receiving from? My understanding is that HOLA does not screen for eligibility based on need. their criteria is that you are latino. This is very unfair to the needy children who will not get a gift because of your selfishness and unfair to those that donated to Toys for Tots thinking they were helping needy children. CPR

I follow up on the Toys for Tots. Tim Sherman a Marine in charge of Toys for Tots in Lake County stated flatly that Hola or Verionica Dahlberg have nothing to do with Toys for Tots. He asked why I had concerns and explained some of the actions Ms. Dahlberg had taken in Painesville. He reasured me that they had no knowledge or contact with this group. He did state that Toys for Tots does provide toys for Hispanic children but they come from the Marine Corp. not HOLA.
TERM, that is absolutely not true. Go to the HOLA site. They have a toys for tots link. They state in an article that they have already signed up 500 children for toys for tots. HOLA It's that time of year! Saturday is HOLA's Christmas party for kids. We've signed up 437 kids from Painesville. We have a separate give-a-way for 114 kids in Ashtabula. Thankfully we have 2 high school Spanish clubs volunteering, plus all the ladies of HOLA. Our special guests are the US Marines!!
HOLA Camilo and Gladys have been registering kids all day for HOLA's 12th annual Christmas party for kids, in partnership with the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots. No idea yet how many kids will sign up this year--usually around 300--but registrations will continue through the next couple of weeks. We have to do our party in ...two shifts! My question is, Who screens the applicants who sign up. Anyone determine if there is actually a need or just a want. If I donate to a charitable group, I want some kind of checks to see if there is a real need. If not, then why not just put up a sign that says free toys.
Every child should receive something for Christmas. I, personally could care less if they are White, Black, or Hispanic. I do have a problem when someone says they are entitled to free toys just because of who they are. I don't blame the kids, I blame the adults who try to use their race in these matters.
As to the Hispanics, a question. Since you say not all Hispanics are illegal and all Hispanics are hard working, why do you need to apply to as many sources as possible? Your church, Toys for Tots, Salvation Army just to name a few.
A simple list of names to make sure the same family doesn't collect from everyone ensures that we can serve as many needy children as possible. I know our church never gets a single name from you even thou you collect from our program.
Notice, I said NEEDY children. Not White children, Black children or Hispanic children. It's time for the adults to be responsible and teach the true meaning of Christmas and bring a little joy to as many children as we can.
Badger, I couldn't agree more all you need is someone showing abuse to the charity and they withhold funding to needy kids. I want all children to enjoy Christmas, its just when you see a group like HOLA seeming to be in concert with Toys for Tots it leaves a bad taste in peoples mouths. Everyone who cares should call and thank the Marines and ask them to politely leave HOLA out in the cold.
Funny you mentioned need I remember when we had the floods in 2006. The Salvation Army was givining away vacuum sweepers to replace the ones they might have lost. This woman had zero flood damage but went and got a new vaccum. She wasn't Hispanic, or Black. No one really has the time or resources to check, I guess we have to put faith in people to be honest.
Supposedly records are kept of who receives all toys from toys for tots to avoid duplication on other lists. That being said, and not considering ways to get around this and be on multiple lists, the Marines should not be aligning themselves in any way with HOLA. The kids can get their presents through other programs, even toys for tots administered by another group. But my problem is with HOLA and VD using our Marines. Too many have died for our flag and are still fighting for our flag and her group should not be allowed in the same room with them. She will use anyone and anything to achieve her goals.

We will always have people who use the system. They sure put a bitter taste in the mouth of the people who volunteer there time to give children a Merry Christmas. It doesn't stop me from coming back the following year. If I make one child happy, then I've succeeded.
On the other hand, we need to put an end to organizations that promote and teach people how to use the system. I feel my responsibility is to the children and not to group or organization. Some of these people even threaten to get me fired. Funny thing, I am simply an unpaid volunteer.
After reading this I have to wonder how many of the members of HOLA actually donate to these programs. Maybe they just send their money back to Mexico. Since money sent back amounts to Mexico's 2nd largest source of foreign money. Income.

To all those people who have to find something wrong in life and then complain about it - Why would you deprive these children of toys at Christmas? Why would you deprive them of meeting the Hispanic, Black, Caucasian and Asian Active Duty, Reserve and Veteran Marines who will be at this party to meet these children on behalf of the Toys for Tots charity. Aren/t we/they the kind of Americans (no hyphen) that you would have them aspire to become? HOLA is involved simply to provide assistance in registering people who do not easily speak english, to network into a part of the community they serve, to reduce the amount of work Toys for Tots volunteers have to do to get the toys to the children, and to provide a venue for distribution of the toys that is consistent with Christmas. Toys for Tots also works with the NAACP Prison Ministry and other organizations not because we do or do not support their primary mission. We seek agencies that can help us reach any child that may return to school and be one of the few children who reflects on an empty stocking.
Over the years we have developed methods of eliminating "double dippers", "scammers" and even been able to weed out registered sex offenders.
I don't understand why those that have never worked with us feel so enabled to criticize us?

At a staged HOLA rally in Painesville two years ago I watched the Ammerican flag dragged in the dirt. Later at another HOLA rally I watched a speaker Ms. Dahlberg brought to Painesville say we are inthe process of taking our land back, with her hi-fiving and applauding. Can't find these statements I will show you where to look. This is not about toys or kids this is about HOLA. Ask them if these statements are true. I and alot of others will be waiting for your findings.

Tim, I think you missed the whole point of why we were concerned about this. TERM explains it well above. We admire the Marines and all you do for the Toys for Tots program. We want the children to get the gifts. We just don't like the alliance with HOLA and Veronica Dahlberg who goes out of her way to malign this country and see that illegals are first in line for any benefits. The flag incident is really disturbing. There are other ways to reach these people as many of them are on other programs, so language isn't a problem.
TERM, what was legal about my family coming to America and having their name changed simply because the person working at the desk on Ellis Island could not pronounce it? My simple point is that we all got here under what I would consider, less than honorable circumstances. People come here because they know how great this country is and want to be part of it. I bet all of the illegal's don't call the cops because their kids won't get up and go to school. Reply all you like, this is my last post on the topic.

JT. I'm glad your done. Sometimes you make no sense. My forefathers came here legally and proudly, and when my father who was born here twenty years later went back to the old country to fight the Italians and Germans, funny he knew who he was and what he was.
I can't even begin to express my disappointment at the attack on us from Tim, a Marine. I will always show my respect for any in the military and give them my thanks. But to have Tim throw the hate in my face was out of line. How can he at least not understand our position of why any association with HOLA is despicable? The flag incident should be enough in itself. VD clapping at a LaRazza representative in our city shouting about taking back their land is just an additional reason. I can't help but think that if Tim actually saw the flag being dragged through our streets he might feel differently. I am not begrudging any latino child of toys. It is not their fault what their parents do. But the latinos are able to work with many local agencies. Just ask the Salvation Army. Ask the many churches in the area. The latinos have no problem reaching out and receiving assistance. This toy distribution does not have to be handled through HOLA. That is the only point we were making. I feel as if VD was speaking through Tim. It sounded like her words. I just can't comprehend this. I will always support our military, but I will not support the Toys for Tots program any more and for that I am sad. I will still donate gifts to the needy which I do every year, but it will definitely be through another organization. And, yes, I have volunteered many hours in the community every month. I am not just spouting off here. I practice my beliefs and I need to be true to what I know is right and wrong. Excuse me now, I am going to go say the pledge of Allegiance to my country. I will then say a prayer for all the military, Painesville City, and my country, that it does not fall due to the pressures being placed on our representatives to give in to a culture that goes against our constitution. For people who have experienced Dahlberg's hatred and disrespect for America first hand, this response from Marine DeWolf hurts. I wish he would at least try to see why this hurts us, rather than throw accusations. Mr. DeWolf, it is about HOLA and Dahlberg. That is all. The innocent children are just caught in the middle, but they will be taken care of. Please, just don't do this through HOLA. Why can't you at least show respect for our feelings? We are not reacting out of hate, but rather love -- love for our country.

I think we all know that the Toys for Tots alliance with HOLA can't be changed this year. The HOLA party is this Saturday. But please, Marines, reconsider your association with them for next year.

Thre are many reputable groups that will get the toys out to the children. Again, there should be no association with HOLA.
Just my opinion - People, speaking in a general sense, are good at heart and want to help those who are less fortunate. That’s why we give so generously to charities. But sometimes giving people, based on their perceptions, factual or not, may reach a conclusion that suggests their good giving nature is being taken advantage of to benefit those undeserving. Do we recall several years ago when the population cried out for welfare reform and Ohio legislators responded with changes in law? If I recall at that time, those who opposed welfare changes placed ‘the good of the little children’ in the front firing line, so to speak. However, we know the children weren’t the abusers of the system but rather mom and dad who stepped over the line. Please, let’s fight a fair fight and leave the kids out of this. More likely than not, it‘s mom and dad with the outstretched hand giving people resent. And while we are at it, maybe we could cool-it with the name calling. It reeks of ignorance. It’s the right of the people to question and examine, and push for change where needed. So go about that task now. You know where to start.

I have not seen any of the other organizations list "close to 500 White, African- American, Asian, Indian etc. kids have been registered. Yet she specifically list Latino kids. If other organizations did this Veronica Dahlberg would be pointing an accusing finger! Also if you check the following web site

This specific program is for the children in Lake and Geauga Counties not Ashtabula County. So my question is does anyone really know what she is doing? How many times has her organization received donations from organizations for specific locations or for specific people/groups and she distributes as she see fit? Do not be hard on the Marines, perhaps they were not aware of what kind of organization they were dealing with.However for next year perhaps the Marine Toys for Tots program will work with another organization instead of HOLA since this information has been brought to their attention. So next year a friendly phone call to remind the Marine's about HOLA would be a good thing. And while on the subject, maybe we need to find out what other organizations HOLA is receiving freebies from and let them know what kind of organization HOLA is.
Many churches and the Salvation Army get their toys from Toys for Tots.
Yesterday the Salvation Army received $5,000 in toys from Lake/Geauga Toys for Tots campaign. So boycott Toys for Tots and you hurt the entire community that receives toys.
Make the children pay for the sins of the adults. Good philosophy that will undoubtedly meet the spirit of the season.
I am glad we have given you what you need this Christmas season - We will only see more than 300 children enjoying time with their families, their church and perhaps the only Jewish Santa in Ohio. We won't see any political issues, there will be no grandstanding, just cookies, kids and Christmas.

I have read all of these comment what started out as Happy Thanksgiving turned out to be about HOLA. Yes HOLA is a bottem feeder not question about that, but you can not attack toys for tots and the US Armed Service for giving them toys. 4:13pm, if you could read you would see that I did answer that I do volunteer work every week. So you don't need to lecture me. And I also said that I knew nothing could be done this year. We are asking that they reconsider this for next year. And if you had read, we do care about all the children, and they will all be taken care of. You are the one spreading hate, and VD spreads hate on a daily basis. This will not stop here.

We are not letting HOLA slide. They are being constantly monitored and held accountable. But this is one aspect of that. And it is not the double dipping part that is to egregious. It is HOLA's involvement with the incident of dragging the american fla through our streets and brinin LaRazza in to our town to proclaim they will take their land back. You just don't get it, and by your allowing this you are ivin support to HOLA's actions.

Would someone please explain what this is all about? I have read everyones posts and am unclear as to what this is about. Is it about the Marines? Id it about Toys for Tots? Is it about HOLA? Is it about Veronica Dahlberg? Would you please give me the who, what where, when and why. I don't need to hear the I saw this or that happen or the i heard them say we're going to do this or that to the land. I get that you're pissed about the ralley that they had in 2007, but would you explain what HOLA does? How about explaining what Toys for Tots does. Then explain what the Marines do? and finally what does Veronica Dahlberg do? After these questions are answered I might be able to understand what it is that everyone is complaining about. Because right now all I'm hearing is the same ole' loop of "this and that".

Toys For Tots is a wonderful Program through our United States Marine Corps, The children in the US if in need are being helped. Lets count blessings and quit counting the fingers that point to others but actually point back to the pointer for being busy voicing opinion and not doing anything to better the situation.
Double dipping, dragging a flag etc is all out of line, end of story. Being upset with Toys for Tot is stupid. Again they give toys to needy kids nothing more. You may not like it but HOLA does have needy kids. If you monitored them as much as you say you do, why then did Term have to point this out? Place blame where it needs to be with HOLA be upset with them.
Did the Marines check out HOLA? Did McW check them out? I think this belongs alot higher then the pay scale we are dealing with here. No one was against Toys for Tots, no one was against the Marines, everyone is questioning the association between HOLA, who will now say the Marines agree with there mission statement. Why else would they help us?

I don't believe in Veronica Dahlberg's methods or mission any more than anyone else that is a law-abiding citizen. But all she is really guilty of regarding Toys for Tots is better organization and planning. I love reading this blog and am happy to see many good things come out of it, but unfortunately many of the things found here are AFTER THE FACT. For those of you that volunteer and don't like what you are reading, then investigate a little where your time and money is going to assure yourselves that it is accomplishing what you want it to. And for those that are just habitual complainers, get out and DO SOMETHING. Make phone calls, write letters, get involved however and where-ever you can. Beat VD at her own game.

You need to write about the facts not your opinion! People are concerned about this and have every right to ask questions and talk about it. Dahlberg has bragged about how for 10 years she has worked with the Marines Toys for Tots. Guess as long as HOLA/Dahlberg had free reign and no one questioned it everything is fine, when the hard questions are aked people are attacked and accusations are made against them! I am unsubscribing to this blog. The spirit of a few is hateful and non-productive to improving any thing I value.
I originally posted my name, phone number, e-mail address and an invitation to meet with anyone over coffee to discuss the matters in question.
The offer still stands. I wish all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I would like to publicly thank my wife for keeping me grounded in all of this and for her unselfish committment to helping children. Each year while we find things wrong in life she takes her annual vacation and spends it working for Toys for Tots. Almost every day will find her sorting toys, shopping for toys, bagging toys for children or meeting groups like Girl Scouts to shop for toys for needy kids.
I am blessed she is above becoming involved in discussions like those here - I wish I had her wisdom and dedication.

As I read here and read in other areas, someone made a poor judgement call to utilize the HOLA Party as a distribution point for a much worthy cause.
V. Dahlberg has made it quite clear in this area and across Ohio that: "she, and only she, is the representative for the rights of the Latino population." Veronica states that "She is there to provide the guidance and support for all Latino's that come to the U.S." Veronica's way of guidance/support is to try to force all levels of the government to change every law/rule/ordinance to make the Latino's entrance into our country a lawless environment of which has been their life all of their life.
Veronica has missed the boat. The countries where these folks come from (mostly Mexico)have more tight/stringent immigrant laws than the U.S.
Veronica, your real job is to assist all to respect and follow the procedures of this country in order for all of them, you claim to represent, to enter the U.S. as all others have done way before you! Your job is not to make their family heritage/language/customs a mandatory issue of a complete change-over that we the residents and government, of the U.S., must adhere to. Your job is to teach all of them respect. Respect for procedures of entrance, respect of the laws that govern everything in this country, respect of the fact that all of whom you supposedly represent do not trespass on private property, do not throw your spanish laden trash all over every city, respect that it is not tolerated that Adult Latino's allow urination/defecation in open public areas, rape/incest may be okay in their world; it is morally and unlawful in the U.S., respect the zoning laws for over-population of a home, get a permit (with permission from the Govt) to make extra driveways and parking areas, respect the rights of your neighbors when you decide to drive all over their property to reach yours when you have your parties that are full of beer and the participants are driving DUI, explain to the adults that their children do not have the right to ride all over someones property as if they own that land, explain to all of your supposed/protected people that torment our domestic pets that this is not only cruel but also against the law, tell them that when they have a vicious dog or any dog that they must license them/leash them/muzzle them (have already been attacked by one of their p. bull dogs), provide all of the parents with the parameters to teach their children that there are rules/laws that they must abide by instead of telling all of us that there are not rules/laws for them.
Veronica, if you so love and want to protect the Latino community, you are not doing right nor helping any of them at all.
If you want to fight the fight, go back to their homeland and make those areas a safe and productive place to live instead of trying to change every state in a country that has been just fine - up and until the massive illegal infiltration that you support.
Your people are not and will never be above and beyond; as no other nationality has ever expected nor demanded what you do.
Veronica you have failed those that you claim to represent. You have instilled in all of them a rebellious/me first mind-set.
Shame on you Veronica, you are a negative not a positive for your supposed good-will cause.
Do yourself a favor, and a positive favor for your cause:
Read all you can Read about the history of the United States and how you can advise/teach others to participate and become positive (not negative) CITIZENS.
If their growth is guided by your negativity, they will never ever grow/prosper/assimilate, and have the reality of a better life.
Many of us across the borders of the states challenge you to sit-down and be re-educated. Are you up to this or are you still going to be high-handed and stubborn?
