"VETERANS DAY 2009"

This years Veterans Day hits a lot closer to home. A little more then a week ago this community and his family grieved the loss of Lance Corporal David Baker. This is the day we honor all sailor's, soldiers and marines to show our appreciation to the service these men and women gave to our country. The saying "Some Gave All' holds more meaning to me this year.
In your day to day lives tomorrow thank a Veteran for his service to this country.
I was reminded of the funeral by an email sent to me by a friend who mentioned the HBO movie "Chance" that will be shown tomorrow twice. It is the story of a Marine who escorts the body of a fallen Marine home for burial.

Were getting old.
I was also reminded today November 10th is the 34th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior. The ship made famous by the Gordon Lightfoot song. The ship was on its way to Cleveland when it and its crew of 29 were lost at sea.
I remember when I was a child watching those long lake boats come into the Grand River in Fairport. I was told the "Fritz" made numerous stops there.
How time really flys.

Veteran Day This must be the most misused paid holiday in the world. The federal, state, and local governments view this as another paid day off.How many people besides them get this freebie? The only ones that should get a paid day off Veterans! not some secretary in the utility office.

Wow, I should have know that if I was going to hear about someone complaining about our government taking a day to honor those who have served our country in life and in death:
IT WOULD BE ON THIS SITE.

Normally I hope that nobody ever reads this site because of people like you, but Today I hope they read it.

To 8:55 I think that comment was not about the holiday, but who was getting a paid day off. I myself believe the Veterans are the ones intitled to the holiday.

Thanks to all the Veterans and their families, both gave evenly, some more than others. TERM one group forgoten in the post were Airmen. I know it is just an oversight but as a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force, it is dear to my heart. Nice post, and I hope it does not get prostituted to much in here.

To answer the Marine question, I went to Wikipedia and the poster at 8:41 was right, read on.

The history of the United States Marine Corps begins with the founding of the Continental Marines in 1775 to conduct ship-to-ship fighting, provide shipboard security and assist in landing forces. Its mission evolved with changing military doctrine and foreign policy of the United States. Owing to the availability of Marine forces at sea, the United States Marine Corps has served in every conflict in U.S. history. It attained prominence when its theories and practice of amphibious warfare proved prescient, and ultimately formed a cornerstone of the Pacific campaign of World War II. By the early 20th century, the Marine Corps would become one of the dominant theorist and practitioner of amphibious warfare. Its ability to rapidly respond to regional crises has made and continues to make it an important tool for American foreign policy

Thanks Vets. JT

Today marks the United States Marine Corps’ 234th birthday. The United Marine Corps was first founded in Nov. 10, 1775, since then it has consecrated in sacrifice and tested in battles over the years. The Marine Corps are the non glamorous and the silent units compared to the air force but there is no doubt that has continuously adapted and evolved, often through extraordinary innovation.
The first formal Marine Corps Birthday Ball was held in Philadelphia in 1925. Today the Marine Corps is an apex lethal force, be it in defense or offense and it also supports missions from the White House and the State Department.
Secretary Michael B. Donley (Air Force) wrote a letter to the secretary of the Navy stating:
“Congratulations as you celebrate the 234th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. The men and women of the United States Marines embody a tradition of honor and selfless service dating back to the establishment of the Continental Marines in 1775. Today, they and the thousands who have earned the right to be called a Marine continue to uphold these most hallowed traditions by serving proudly around the globe.

“The men and women of the U.S. Air Force are honored to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the U.S. Marines, as we provide our country unparalleled military capability. America’s Airmen salute you and wish you the best on your birthday.
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Scwhartz wrote:
“Congratulations to the U.S. Marine Corps on 234 years of service to our great nation. We celebrate the culture that the ‘leathernecks’ embody — honor, courage and commitment. Your current active duty and Reserve warriors, along with those who have formerly worn the Marine Corps uniform with pride, have all truly lived up to the Corps’ sacred motto: ‘Semper Fidelis.’
“The men and women of the U.S. Air Force are proud to serve with the U.S. Marine Corps, as together; we defend our Nation’s freedoms and protect our precious way of life. We extend to you and each Marine a very Happy Birthday.

From Wikipedia,
A soldier is a member of the land component of national armed forces; whereas a soldier hired for service in a foreign army would be termed a mercenary.[1] In most languages, "soldier" includes commissioned and non-commissioned officers in national land forces.

Anyone in the service can correct me if I am wrong here. You have earned that right and my respect. The rest of us civilians need to keep quiet and thank an active duty or veteran today and every day.

In general terms, the names for each branch are as followed.

Air Force ---- Airman
Army ------Soldier
Marines ----- Marine
Navy ----- Sailor or Seaman

I'm sorry that I don't know the term for the Coast Guard. I should, living this close to Lake Erie. Maybe someone can help me here.

Subject to ponder on Veteran's Day:

Talk about power.........We have...

12 super carriers (all nuclear power) they do not have to refuel for 50 years...soon to have 13

30 ships go around each one (including 2 nuclear subs)

Each carrier 1,091 ft long, 6,000 people on each , serves 18,000 pizzas a day, 450,000 gals. of fresh water a day, besides all the nice war capabilities it has in it....

That people is projected power and we use it all time .....it is what is.......I think it is a beautiful thing and there is nothing anyone can say or do about it......

And no National healthcare! How about that!

Fought in Two World Wars at the same time and won, yet the Germans and Japanese have higher mortality rates and universal coverage for there citizens. Us? Well were still there even protecting them after almost 65 years, plus having troops station in every corner of the world. Recently we were attacked by a group of religious fanatics with no army, navy, air force and yet they managed to kill almost 4,000 of us?
Our response was to invade Iraq that as history will show had as much to fear from these fanatics as we did. Another 4000 dead Americans. Yes honor the ones that serve in the position of protecting this great country just don't waste this valuable resource.

Conservatives? Birthers, Obama haters no one. Check the trees at the start of the rally footage, bare now look at the footage Fox used trees green with leaves?

When do the Cherry Blossoms come out in the spring? Same time as here? You know that the growing season is longer the farther South you go.

I will send a picture to Term and maybe he will post it here as proof. As of Nov. 5th there are still green leaves on the trees.

I got your pictures and was going to post them. Then comes Sean Hannity who admits they used stock footage from the 9/12 rally by "mistake." So I guess they did fudge a little. A major news team didn't expose this Comedy Networks John Stewart did. The only thing I at this time do not understand was how could the Ft. Hood killing not be a Terrorist attack? Homegrown, lone gunman,or with help? All I hear is no one collected the dots? That friends is getting old. Do you think anyone will be fired or lose command over this?
Now I understand the General in charge in Afganistan is the same one that promoted the coverup on the Tillman friendly fire case? The Ambassador is also a former General who is advising the White House about all the corruption in Afganistan leadership. I think it would be wise if we all said a prayer for our troops stationed in the Hell hole tonight and for nights to come.
The President needs to become Presidential soon! Its a position you can't just be a nice guy.

I was at the one in September and friends went to the one in November. September's was by far larger and took place on a Saturday with months to plan. The one in November was during the week with very little advance notice because of the vote. However, the leaves are still mostly green in DC.

Yes, now is not the time to cover things up. Fort Hood, terrorist attack, govt. seizing Mosques and 36 story buildings in NY that have ties to Iran. Shooter just happens to attend a Mosque that a known terrorist preached who is now in Yemen. Yemen, the same county the USS Cole was attacked. All the suicide bombings in an unstable part of Pakistan. Then we have North and South Korea, Hugo Chavez, Ahmadinejad along with Iraq and Afghanistan to deal with.

As Term said, now is the time to be Presidential. Forget being the rock star. Just because you can read a speech from a teleprompter won't solve any problems. It won't protect our troops. Some people will always be our enemies. Time to accept the fact of who is our ally and who is our enemy. You as President must set a firm foreign policy. This wishy washy, let's be friends with everyone will invite further attacks. Fort Hood? We need to stand firm in today's world. Politicians need to make up their minds about policy then turn it over to the professionals, our military to carry out that policy. Stay or leave. Half way only gets people killed. Show weakness or indecision gets people killed as in the innocent or our servicemen. Right now, unfriendly countries are testing us to see what they can get away with.

We need to get a foreign policy we can LIVE with or more will die with the buddy buddy policy we have now.

Here come the racist remarks but I don't care. Fort Hood has me upset.

Not all Muslims are terrorist, it's just that most terrorist are Muslim. Also, not all Hispanics are illegal, it's just that most illegal immigrants are Hispanic. It seems to me that they are both causing us to bleed. The terrorist draw actual blood and the illegal immigrants bleed our social services dry.

We need to protect our servicemen and protect our jobs and our social services in this economy.

Seems to me that both 1:43 and 4:55 jumped to conclusions without knowing all the facts. Green leaves and a picture posted by a staffer by mistake. ???? Any knowledgeable person should be able to tell the difference in crowds. The news sights stated that the size of the crowd for the 9/12 march as 10's of thousands to 2 million. Someone was misstating the facts. Who? Ask someone who was there. Anyone who was there would have pictures and first hand knowledge of the size. I question a reporter who is sitting in some studio being able to tell the size of the crowd.

More to the point is that why most people only watch only one news source or read only one paper. Or, believe only the Democrats or the Republicans are right. News shows are about ratings and political parties are about the votes. If you only listen to one side or source, how do you know you can absolutely trust the information. H*ll, we might just as well listen to Term.

We need to become informed voters who ask questions. Agree or disagree with these protests, at least they are letting Congress know how they feel. I have seen many other protests such as the civil rights marches and the Vietnam War protests in DC. Guess what, Fox News and CNN didn't exist back then. What news source did we blame then? Want Congress to listen, then you must get their attention. Stop pointing the finger and get involved. Attend meetings, ask questions, help a candidate or official, volunteer for a political party and by all means become a informed voter.

That's our civic duty, isn't it.

Term made his decision about this. I still have yet to see any of the pictures Fox showed. Digital pictures are time stamped. Yes, this info can be altered but if you also have video with sound taken at almost the same time, that would be harder to alter, but also easier to verify. The fact that I happen to have pictures proves that I watch Fox or any other news program. Now who is the one trying to mislead people. Believe what you want, but you seem to be just as bad as the so called people you claim only watch Fox. Anyone who believes everything they say on the news or everything they read on the internet is truly misinformed. All news shows give misleading or inaccurate facts from time to time. Get over it.

Bush lied, Clinton lied, O J lied, Fox lied and who else? Goes with the territory. Funny thing is, Obama doesn't seem to like it when it happens to him. The fact remains that I have pictures of both events and I know how big the crowds were. I could care less what you believe. Term has decided that the pictures don't change the fact that Fox screwed up. I happen to agree. Thanks Term

Fort Hood shooter.

Terrorism or Treason.

What to charge him with besides murder. Unfortunately he is a citizen, born in VA. Should he have any rights, not in my opinion but he does. If he had been killed, problem solved for the most part. The only thing is that he would have become a martyr. Now we have to give medical care and go through the expense of a trial and the appeals by some do-gooder. I think we should give him his right to a speedy trial and with that a speedy execution. Things like this only prove my point that not everyone is or wants to be our friend. Some people you just can't trust.

As Teddy said "Speak softly and care a big stick"

Maybe a few less speeches and a little more action is called for now.

2nd Amendment.

Ever notice that most of these mass shootings take place in high schools, colleges and now Army bases. I am waiting for the outcry to ban guns.

Guess what, guns are banned from all these places. Only criminals carry guns in these places.

Is there a safer and easier place to kill innocent people than ones where you know no one will have a way to defend themselves? They will say guns kill people. Sorry, people kill people. Same as cars kill people. No, it is the drunk or inattentive driver who kills. There are more people killed by drunk drivers than murdered with guns. Should we ban cars? How about alcohol? We tried that once, and only the criminals had alcohol. How was crime then. Al Capone anyone. Soldiers without a gun to protect themselves. Who would have thought of this. Clinton in 1993.

Stop and think about this. How many people do you personally know have been murdered with a gun? Now, do you know anyone who has been critically hurt or killed by a drunk driver. How many repeat crimes with a gun? They're In prison. Repeat drunk drivers with just a slap on the wrist and sent out to hurt or kill another innocent person?

Do gun accidents happen, yes, but no where near as many car accidents or even drunks falling or getting hit by cars or even trains. And, most murders are criminals shooting criminals. I read somewhere that about 75% murders are criminals shooting each other. Drugs???

I fear the drunk driver most. The criminal with a gun or other deadly weapon is probably next. As for someone who has a permit to carry or owns say a shotgun, that is like the guy next to me in the foxhole.

I'll keep my guns thank you. Criminals, feel free to rob or murder someone who is anti-gun.

Fort Hood is one of the largest United States military installations in the world, and is the home of III Corps, 1st Cavalry Division, 13th Sustainment Command, First Army Division West, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, 41st Fires Brigade had to call the police.

What is wrong with this picture.

Police, for all the do and I thank them for their service usually arrive after the crime. After it is to late. Our military had to wait for the police to show up and soldiers got killed and wounded because of Clinton's gun ban on military bases.

Safe is a relative term. You mention Church. Haven't there been shootings a churches too. Another place criminals or crazies can kill people knowing they won't have any resistance. As for bars, alcohol and guns don't mix. Unfortunately, too often people allow cars and alcohol to mix. It is true that some stores and businesses don't allow legal gun owners to carry guns. I'm sure the criminals obey those signs. Right. There are places in Cleveland and Painesville I avoid because they are unsafe. As for gun free zones, I make a mental note and alter my shopping accordingly, just like I wouldn't shop in a known dangerous area.

I try to look for the good in people, but sadly, in this day and age we must be prepared for the worst in people. How many people locked their doors, say 30 years ago. Ask those same people today and they probably would say they always lock them now. Term, did your parents lock their doors? I bet you do.

Do I like the fact that I feel the need to protect my family and myself now. No. Unfortunately, we don't seem to be able to go back in time where neighbors trusted each other and looked out for each other. Just sad.

How about those kids riding their bikes up and down the street; where do they belong?
Our neighborhood is making plans to go Christmas caroling this year. Yup, right here in good old P'vlle.
Love the neighbors and the hood & we do look out for each other.
We still manage to see the good in each other and it's pretty good.

Overall, Painesville is a relatively safe place. Still, there are places I will not go at night and some not even in the day time. Tony's Subway Inn use to be a family place. Ask Term. People would take their kids there for spaghetti dinner. I would never go near it now. Drugs and more Drugs. Argonne, Shamrock, Ladies of Summer, and people standing on street corners with cell phones for hours or even in bad weather. All these raise my attention.

Do I know my neighbors? Some. Others who have moved into houses that are now rentals don't care to be neighborly. Threats, vulgar language, kids running all over doing the same are hard to talk to. Now you have to include those that visit these people. More of the same. Our neighborhood is slowly going down hill. Half of these people get evicted in less than a year and police are constantly coming down our street for this and that. Can't go much more than three days without one of these houses getting a visit from the police. Do I really want to be friends with these people, no. More and more rentals and a constant revolving door of people makes it hard to talk or have coffee like you may be able to do with your neighbors.

Yes the rest of my neighbors watch out for each other, share things from the garden, kids play together and help each other. As for the others, we mostly just keep clear.

Christmas caroling sounds great. We use to have neighborhood picnics. We can't do that anymore. I am glad you still live in a nice area. I don't any more. Like I said, we never use to lock our doors. Wouldn't dream of doing that now. I also use to just trap shoot. I would go to a shooting range then come home and put my gun away until the next time I went. Now I feel I need to have a gun to protect myself in an emergency. Do I like that. No. I wish we could go back to what I consider the good old days.

We have had the Fort Hood shooting and the killing of the women in Cleveland recently. The people around Sowell didn't know what was going on around them. How about the number of sex offenders in Painesville (58). Highest in Lake County and more than even Mentor. I'm the last person looking for trouble but I will defend my family and myself.

Look at the uproar the half way house proposed for the State Street school site caused. Why? How many sex offenders live near you? How about drug raids near you. Would you take your kids to this type of neighbor to sing carols? I would be willing to bet most of your neighbors own their homes. Now, mine don't. That is why we need to address the high number of rentals in our city. We need more people with a stake in the city if we want to make it a better place to live.

A place we can all go caroling.

Our street was headed down the rental path but we fought back and the last rental was zoned out a few years ago. The rental sat vacant for quite awhile but a family finally moved in. They bought the house and have had a difficult time meeting the neighbors. They have been there for 6 years. We helped them dig out during a storm last year and now they say Hi.
This neighborhood fought back and I am glad we did.
We are now zoned residential, single family.......yeah.

fight back!

Meant to add to post above. When was the last time someone (stranger) walked down your street with a gun tucked in his pants? Yes, I did call the police and thankfully they came and took care of the situation. What about the next time? Almost every summer we hear gun shots. The police can't be everywhere and where will the next shots go. Will we be the intended target or just an innocent bystander? As a gun owner, I don't believe guns are the answer but sometimes a cell phone or cup of coffee just won't protect you. As they say, just because I have a fire extinguisher, doesn't mean I go around starting fires. I'm just prepared. As you say, you look for the good in people. So do I. However, there are some people who are just up to NO GOOD. Just watch the news or read the papers.

Badger is so right, and the one candidate, Gagliardi, that took a firm stand against rentals didn't get enough votes.

Tony,

We saw you at Jalapeno Loco last night, sorry we did not get a chance to meet you, (could not get by the loud table in the middle Ha, Ha.)

We were happy to support you in the race, and we will be more then happy to help & support you if you run again, we have talked with a lot of people that think you would have done a great job.

Thanks again...

I think people think that I, or we, should all walk around armed like a bunch of vigilantes. Yes, I know where you can and can't carry a gun. Any gun owner should know the laws and safety concerns with a gun. Do I now think of the surroundings more and more in this day and age. Yes. Do I go everywhere with a gun. No. I trap shoot once in awhile. Some people have hand guns and are licensed to carry them legally and they know where they can do this. I support their right to do this if they have a license to do so. I'm saying that I think about what I need at a store and where that store is, now.

Do we live in a area that we are in constant fear of being shot or blown up like the Middle East. No. Do we need to keep criminals out of Painesville. Yes. I am saying, more rentals lower property values and that leads to just more rentals. This invites more criminals.

Nationally, violent crimes are down slightly. In the past year or so, gun sales have increased significantly. Are these two things related. Probably. Imagine going to work or school and everywhere you went people had guns. Watch the news, you will see it almost daily. Do I want that here. No way. When I was growing up, the neighbors would give us cookies or yell at us if we got into trouble. Our parents got along and we were a neighborhood. Try doing that today. Halloween was just a few weeks ago. Did you check your candy? How many houses gave candy? Not many on my street.

Can we go back to a simpler life, probably not. Do we need to keep our neighborhoods safe, yes. We should feel safe at school, church and even at an Army base. Just as I protect my children from strangers, I am prepared to protect my family. I just wish a locked door made me feel safe.

Today, I'm not so sure.

Well said Badger. I am a responsible gun owner with a concealed carry, and I do carry -- occasionally. Not everywhere. Maybe I should, because you never know when that nutcase or criminal with a gun will show up, but I pick and choose where I feel safe and don't feel safe.

so, you guys are licensed to carry, which means you completed a course on safely shooting a gun.

Now the big question, do you have any kind of training to make sure the "bad guys" don't take that gun from you and use it on you or someone else?

At November 19, 2009 at 8:15 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I do have extensive training, but there's no guarantees on anything. but I guarantee that bad guy generally already has a gun an doesn't need mine to commit his acts.

Concealed Carry. The key word is concealed. You need a license for this. By the way, it is legal to carry a gun that is not concealed, provided you don't have a felony. Will you cause a scene? I am sure you will. This is called open carry. The bad guy is not suppose to know you have a gun if you carry concealed. 8:15 said the bad guy has a gun already. If he tries to take yours then he is why you need to be able to defend yourself in the first place.

Good God!
Welcome to the Wild West!
What is wrong with you people?

Hey and accidents happen and no guarantee you are going down first or your kids or your dog. Or your kids finds the gun and figures out where the bullets are. But then I will leave you to your delusional illusions.

So how many were "pack'n" at Holiday shopping in Painesville Tuesday night ?
Maybe Abby D. and her posse' are now pack'n

Merry Gun pack'n Christmas!
Gladly shopping online this year.

I guess the wild west comes to Painesville is all my fault. I simply said I trap shoot once in awhile and all the recent killings in the news made me feel a greater need to protect my family.

Now we have vigilantes roaming the streets pack'n guns, bullets flying everywhere and children playing with assault weapons.

I was simply referring to the difference between how innocent life was when I grew up to what it is like now. Drunk drivers, sex offenders, terrorists, illegal immigrants, ladies of the evening and drug dealers. Maybe they were all here before but I sure feel we see more of these today.

Will a gun solve anything. No. We need to communicate with each other more. I just don't think communication would have stopped the killings in Cleveland or Fort Hood. A gun might mean the difference in life or death in some cases. Just as war should be a last resort, so should self defense.

So, Billy the Kid, Frank and Jesse, you Younger Brothers and the rest of you gun tot'n gunslingers, no need to come to Painesville. I was just reflecting on how life has changed. Still wishin' for the good old days.

Badger we had all that stuff when you were growing up but nobody talked about it. We had all this and more growing up in the 50's. Remember the DP's? Pretty sure there a couple illegals in my neighbors basement that never spoke a word of english but their Irish was so thick it sounded like a foreign language. They hung out for a summer and went somewhere else. As a kid I thought they were pretty creepy.
Then the 60's brought in LSD and my dear sainted Mother found out the kid next door (in the same house) was dealing when the cops shot him on his front lawn. Made the Cleveland Press, D section and almost a foot note.

Communication sure would have helped in Cleveland but not sure about Fort Hood. You see something funny you call. My understanding is the neighbors did call and there were red flags but it still slipped through the cracks.

So now we have 58 or so sex offenders in the Ville' and what do we do? This is not a fixable offense!
In the good ole' days you didn't know if a sex offender lived next door, now you do! And ain't great you know if they are living next to the schools. Yeah sucks but sex is as old as ....... dirt, even older than guns.

Thank goodness for Hope House and all the other places that lend a helping hand these days. Maybe Mom's and Dad's should step up to the plate and teach kids it's not ok for this stuff to go on instead of becoming complacent with this stuff. We get bombarded with it everywhere, thank you P. Diddy or whatever you are calling yourself today. The "good ole' boys" weren't always so good.

I am happy we are here today and my kids seem pretty well adjusted. They have been taught what is acceptable and what is not and if not than do something about it but get off your dead a** and do something about it. Well at least they aren't killing baby animals or torturing baby birds like my neighbor kid whose parents bought him a pump action air rifle to shoot stuff, like my tires and dog.

gotta go kill something for dinner.
the world has just gone wonky.

I have to agree. It was probably here then too. The key word from your post was complacent.

We've become complacent with all this activity going on around us. It's no big deal, everybody does it. No social stigma attached to any of this behavior any more. Thankfully my kids turned out normal. You say Moms and Dads need to teach there children more about right from wrong. I agree, but today there are more broken homes with single parents than where and when I grew up. How many of these single parents are into these same activities?

I'd also be willing to bet that if you said anything to little "Johnny's" parents about your tires and dog, they probably yelled at you and said their little innocent boy wouldn't do that. Maybe called you an A**whole or a racist. Anything but hold their son responsible for his actions. A fine lesson to teach. If we got into trouble in school or a neighbors, we got punished there AND when we got home. Now days, no one wants to accept responsibility for their actions. It is almost always someone else's fault.
