"I GOT YOU BABE'

In an earlier post I mentioned I would try to find the salary of the Superintendent of the Painesville City Schools now I can only guess what he hums to on the way to work everyday but it must be that song by Sonny & Cher.
This information was collected on the website. www.scribd.com

Dr. Hanlon's base salary this year was $127,000.00
A PHD. stipends 5,000.00
A facility construction stipends 15,000.00
One time stipends payment of 3% 3,810.00
Tax Free annuity 2,004.00
Car Allowance 3,600.00
_____________
$156,344.00

I'm not done.
100% of PERS contributions
Superintendent expense acct. $300.00 month
can accumulate up to 275 sick days
vacation of 35 days a year [7 weeks]
Paid health insurance
100% life Insurance paid up to 2X base salary
Cell phone provided for school business

Just a thought but who does the Public Relations for the schools? You might be surprised, and don't you think that should have been first to go?

Someone tell me why we are cutting teachers aids?
This from the lowest rated system in the county and near the bottom in the whole Cleveland area.
After the love fest I watched at the last school board meeting its time to clean house people!
A layoff school employee asked where was the sacrifice from the administration?
I have the same question.

You put this information on a flyer and this school system couldn't pass a levy in a 100 years. this is a sin. No wonder they are out of money.

Dr. Hanlon deserves every penny he gets he earned it all. Painesville needs 10 more like him.

Can you please tell me and the others what Hanlon has done to earn his pay? I am not doubting your opinion, but I can not really see what you can be SATISFIED about.
The school rankings?
The graduation rate?
The problems he has givin to people seeking busing?
The recent and reoccuring errors in the treasurer's office?
The number of police calls dispatched to Harvey?
The unacceptable behavior of some staff that goes on with no disciplinary action?

He should have a lovefest with the board with this package. Along with this he seeks jobs outside the district. Just shows his loyalty to the students and residents of Painesville. This package comes to close to $50.00 per student in the system what a deal!

5:55 another cracked out painesville resident or maybe one of the board who keeps approving the Hanlon monkeyshines.

To Anonymous at 5:55, "Deserves every penny..hmm let's see.. Academic emergency for how many years? School principals unable to run their schools due to his micromanaging and unwillingness to support strict disciplinary procedures that is needed? Just asked Harvey's current principal about that one. And..let's not forget the great 50% rule.. Sorry, we don't need more like him.

At a low ball cost of about $45.00 PER STUDENT (That's just to cover his base salary) I just don't think the kids are getting enough bang for their buck. And if rumors are true that he is thinking of going to another school district then maybe he should have planned on having something worth selling...instead of the legacy of a district that NEEDS a 50% rule to keep the stiles turning and the cash flowing...or ratings that are so low that Painesville City Schools are among the worst in the whole Northeastern Ohio region...or an elementary school that is in academic emergency (Elm St) Those are facts folks...and Dr Hanlon has been there long enough that some of that should have changed for the better by now. New buildings are a wonderful thing but its the content not the trappings that are important here...and unfortunately the pretty Painesville schools are not producing literate capable graduates in the numbers they should.

Strict discipilinrian? Have you been to Harvey Lately? There is no one like that there?
The P.R. person can't be Dr. Hanlons wife could it? This is paying something we could do in house but its another bennie for the boss.

You try and run the schools I bet you will think this is not enough money, think about it is like running a big company.

Good idea, give the General all the money, and shortchange your infantry. Think about it like running a big FAILED company. I'd cut him back to what he was making 5 years ago, take it or leave it. If he leaves it he will have more free time to persue that job he's been chaseing. Thats no secret!

Perhaps we should out source the Super's job. How about a bit competition? The systems sucks and it has grossly devalued our homes. Ask anyone if they are contemplating moving to p'vlle? and make sure they have school age kids.

Maybe that is why the city is putting in 900 square foot condos where the hospital used to be, for $179,000 a piece. Maybe the city and schools are in cahoots to be as kid unfriendly as you can get. guess what it's working

Pvll is not very kid friendly.......c'mon Hal as bus driver?

I bet they dont even care about cutting all these jobs!! as long as they make their big bucks!!

Does he get a new contract every year? How much was added in the last 2 years whewn the board said they knew money was short?

I believe this is a very serious time for the schools in Painesville. Go to there web site and the power point presentation on page ten where they mention that there was no $700,000 mistake. The simple truth is the mistake was that in negociations with the school employees and teachers they were counting on that $700,000 to fill the hole in the budget. That money never materialized from the state. So if its not a mistake what is it? Poor planning? a gamble what. Where is the accountability in all this.
Dr. Hanlon was either put in a box by the school board or himself and now the students must pay. Off hand I would say we are paying way to much for the leadership we have.

What is it about this one man that makes the school board go gaga? Its not like hes made any great strides? I have asked and hes always looking for a new job. Dear God let him leave.
His interest is in himself and not the students of Painesville.

To answer 4:26...no, his contract isn't re-done every year, the present one runs from 8.1.06 thru 7.31.11, but they keep giving him more stuff every year in "Addendums"...here's what the contract does:
2006: base salary $113,300
PhD stipend 5,000
term life ins.
pick up total cost of STRS
cell phone
tax sheltered annuity
a month 100.
8.29.06 added
increased annuity to $167.
a month
5.24.07 added
base salary $117,000
facilities construction
stipend 15,000
7.27.07 added
base salary $127,000
auto allowence 3,600
10 more days of vacation for
a total of 35 per year
changed annuity to 3%
of base salary (do the
math substantial jump)
Board will now reimburse him
for furthering his edu-
cation
Monthly expense acct $300.
8.11.08 added
One time stipend payment
totaling 3% of base salary
Do the math again!
7.14.09 added
base salary $128,270
There is more..but you get the drift...he keeps getting more money and perks evey year..and this answers your question about whether he received anything even when the Board started crying poor.

4:45 anyone with children would be crazy to move into town. Why would you. The two most important assets a community has is safety and education, numbers don't lie. Not cheap utilities. This community sole purpose is for the people that administer the city government, and the schools a high quaility of life. not the people or the students.

To answer 8:05; As much as Dr. Hanlon's contract bothers me (his performance doesn't warrant it) he didn't take the money...the School Board GAVE it to him. So everyone get out and vote for the people that would be new blood for the School Board. These kids deserve better leadership..not business as usual.

As one of the laid off school employees I no longer feel bad about by fate. I see whats important in this school system. I was upset about a stone from India? No theres enough rocks sitting at the front table.

The bigger question........ the election is this Nov. only one candidate is a parent who has seen the light.
Our other choices are the same old same old.

Where do we go from here?
So terribly frustrated with kids concerned about the current administration.

PS and the person above who pointed out the board gave these benefits to Hanlon are the ones to be held accountable is right on target. Who in their right mind would hire his wife for PR? This is just not done. How does the board sleep at night?

This didn't get screwed up overnight and it won't get straighten out overnight. Take a step in the right direction.
Dr. Hanlons wife doesn't handle P.R. for the schools I've been told. If she ever did I guess you could ask?
Do we need P.R. people or help in the classroom?
The stone from India is the stone above the new Harvey High School. That for some reason an acceptable stone could not be found in North America. Dr. Hanlon explained we live in a global economy. His words not mine.

If everyone was happy. Dr. Hanlon, the school board, the students, the staff, the residents that pay for all this. Some of this would make perfect sense. Its common knowledge that Dr. Hanlons not happy, along with everyone but the board that keeps trying to buy him off.
No more please if he can't make it now he never will.
Rember when life was simple and all you worried about was the school names? Term things are changing right in front of us.

As to the questions about the "PR" person for Painesville schools. She IS NOT Dr. Hanlon's wife to my knowledge. She is the person that is taking pictures at all the school functions. She also moonlights as a private investigator - taking pictures of employees who have called off - making sure that they are not out shopping instead of being at work. (OOH - that's necessary - NOT!) She formats the online employee newsletter. She may have other duties that the rest of us (employees) are not aware of. I feel that students could do what she does - (except for the Magnum P.I. stuff). It could be incorporated into the high school marketing program or the journalism class. The students could benefit from the experience and even gain a service cord for graduation and a very nice reference letter for college. Colleges like "well-rounded" individuals, don't they? I think she was in charge of the "buttons" that were passed out at the beginning of the year - "It's all about Learning". (albeit, it is a very nice sentiment) The employees were asked to wear the buttons. I feel that there was a typo - the buttons should have read..."It's all about Lying". I certainly feel that I have been lied to......this position could have been cut - the poor reputation of PCLS ALREADY exists - she cannot change it. We need better OGT scores, graduation rates and college placement. I hope things can change for the better in this district for the future but you need the KEEP the labor and CUT the overhead - anyone with accounting experience knows that...WAKE UP Painesville!! Do not pass another levy unless you know the full truth about how taxpayer dollars are being spent...You are being "had".

As I watch our school system being taken apart, I share huge concerns with the community about the safety of our schools. The administration (most of who have never to rarely been in many of the classrooms being affected) are putting teachers and children in "harms way" by not staffing classrooms based on needs and safety. We continue to carry very expensive administrative staff at the board office while the staff most needed are let go! Someone needs to continue to keep an eye on PCLS asking many, many questions and hoping that nothing bad happens because of the poor administration. Yes, we have new buildings but we still have the
same old leadership that doesn't care about anyone! Time for a change!

The ball is in our court this Tuesday and I know that I am not voting for either incumbent any longer. They have not demonstrated to me that they have my students best interests in mind when making decisions that impact them. I understand budget cuts will sometimes be needed, but be honest with the parents and others that have given you the power to create policy and make decisions that impact our children and our city. Cut the administrative fat, freeze administrative pay, charge for sports if you have to, do anything before you cut the hard working front line people in our schools!

To me, who runs our schools is as important as who we put at the front table at city hall. Just like the low cost electricity that I hear so much about, schools can attract and keep people in our town, and quality schools can have a great impact on the value of our property and the status and appeal of our city.

Let's clean house next week and see what happens. It can only get better!
