Due to the slow economy I am again off on Friday. After checking on my Mom on Cedarbrook, I headed over to Homestead II to check on Dad. I got behind a city vehicle a Dodge Stratus and I noticed one of the two people in the car was the city planner. As we turned down Gillette St. I noticed the brake lights going on in the vehicle everytime the car passed a Murphy for Council sign and the passenger writing on his clip board? When they turned on to Wood St. A lady was having a yard sale and they moved her sign off the tree lawn. With all the problems in Painesville do you think its worth the time and or energy to ask what they were up to?

Since Party in the Park all I have heard about John Murphy from some people in the administration and the present council are negative comments. When I persue the issue for specifics I just get blank stares no reasons just well you know? Well you know what? If you tell me not to waste my vote on him at least give me a reason. I met him at Taste of Painesville and found him with a personality that seemed genuine and a concern for Painesville. I even tried to bait him to starting a conversation that was negative about the other candidates, all he would tell me was what he wanted to do. I have to wonder what the great crisis would be with him on council?

Term,

did you know that the middle school has job posting for principal? Funny thing is they have it posted for this year?

John Murphy must be an independent person. For to long Painesville has had a small group of people that have run thing their way for along time. In the past how many times did you see everyone voting the same way never any dissent. This is with city council as well as the school board.
Now think Painesville where has this gotten us?
Surrounding communities aren't impressed. Lake Hospital System packed up and is leaving. Our schools are brand new but the education they provide are at the bottom in the county, and near the bottom in this part of the state.
In the last 15 years we have doubled the size of Painesville in size, doubled the problems, have we doubled the revenue?
If this cliche that has been in charge is doing so wonderful why are we where we are?
At the last council meeting the CM stated 20 bids were received to tear down whats left of Gristmill. Odd only I interested in building something at the hospital site.
I don't know John Murphy except for what the rest of you see but how much worse can he make it? At least he seems to have a sense of humor.

The school system operates under a cloud of secrecy if its good news you will here it if its bad they will bury it. With something questionable like the Principals job at Elm the less said the better. It is us the parents of the children that attend these schools that most hold the administrations feet to the fire. I am thankful to be able to know some of these facts and have informed others to this site. Sorry Term you have alot more than 12 bloggers.

I hope your note saying the other candidates will follow the lead of the council president? The other 3 people will also me independent and will not follow blindly what there told. I have a concren that its odd that Hach,Fountain, DelMotte never question items they vote on. I only hope they dont have private meeting and discuss items? I believe they know Ohios sunshine rules? That said those three should just quit!
They are stealing money from Painesville by there actions.

Take it from me Mrs. Dahlberg is still miffed by the way St. Mary's, the Chamber of Commerce, and Painesvilles administration has cut her off. For some strange reason she was under the impression she could do as she wished in Painesville. The 3 mentioned above let her have her way until her negatives started to outweigh her positives. Whatever that meetings about its to make her more important.

Why so much anger at certain candidates? I have now finally talked to all of them 1 on 1 (except Fodor, has anyone seen him yet?)and they all seem to be good, solid, honest people with just wanting to make Painesville better.

I am know just trying to judge which ones have the experience and beliefs to get Painesville back on track in a lot of areas.

How about some of you quit posting the negative comments and lets hear about WHY you do or don't think someone would be good on council. I would like to hear some reasons that are real.

What a waste of app.$60,000 The house 2 doors down from me usually has 20 plus people hanging out of all the windows. Noise, fights, music, traffic at all hours. I going to put a garage sale sign on there tree lawn. Maybe someone from the city will do something about this situation.

Anonymous at 7:11am..since you seem to know the ratings of our city schools, here is something you should research. Show me a comparable school anywhere in the state with the same demographics as Painesville which doesn't have problem schools. I have been involved with city schools for years, the problems doesn't lie with the educators in this community, we have some of the finest and brightest teacher in the state within our schools. The problem is with kids who don't have a desire to learn and excel, as well parents who don't care either. The old cliche of "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink" is the problem here. The time our teachers have to influence a student's life is minimal compared to the influences they have surrounding them in their day to day lives.

And how might I know this information, cause I travel the area doing teacher assessments and the quality of your teaching staff is no better or worse than those schools having excellent ratings. They just don't have the volume of problem children and non-caring parents that we have here in Painesville.

I don't believe a word you say 9:01. 7:11 can also answer but lets get afew thing straight that you seem to have ignored. I quote "The problem is with the kids who don't have the desire to learn and excel, as well as parents who don't care either" Sorry don't agree, if you have a student body that is almost half made up of migrant workers children who neither parents or children speak english at home what do you think the outcome will be? Teachers send homework home if no one at home can help whats the point? Also as a large group of children are on some form of government assistance and at some of these homes the parents don't want to or can't help the child. Then the next question who let the schools become overwhelmed with migrant children [a good portion here illegally] as well as all the section 8 and public housing in the city? Who do we point the finger at? Who let this happen?
Me, you, your neighbors down the street that let the leadership of this city continue to make bad or even stupid decisions. Now we start a rental inspection task force. Great, its only about 15 years to late. Some on councilman have wanted this for years, why now?

You don't have to believe a word I say Term..it doesn't suit your argument. Why don't you look at minority testing scores from years past, there were issues within the schools well before the influx of Hispanics came into town. Go to the Ohio Dept of Education report card, ethnic groups are broken by scores..see if that suits your arguments.

You have been involved with the city schools for years. We have some of the finest brightest teachers in the state within our schools. Key word here Some. As a product of the Painesville system in the late 90's I could tell you stories that would curl the hair on your neck. Their are teachers in Painesville I wouldn't let train my dog to rollover. Everything the public should know there not told. Why? When you make blanket statements like that I will bring out names and let the chips fall where they may.

You don't agree that the influx of all the hispanic students hasn't affected the scores? I believe it has become unmanageble. As you said we already had problems. Now I find out with our open enrollment Hispanic children that live in the Riverside District, it is suggested to the parents that Painesville City Schools are better equipped to teach there children? Lets add another hole in the boat. With open enrollment how many extra Hispanic children do we have? Here comes TERMS>> RACIST REMARKES. How about just dealing with the problem.

At September 20, 2009 at 9:29 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree withe Term the open enrollment needs to stop. the school system was already burden to begin with. Now we are going to add to that because Riveside does not want to deal with the issue? To say that teachers have a low impact on childs life is crazy they spend 7hrs a day with the kids add that up and a teacher spend the bulk of the time with your child during the week. They do have impact you can not blanket the issue and say its a noncaring parent. the truth is the system is stuggling because it is unable to teach child who do not speak english. In order to be educatucated in this county english is a requirment and if you dont have it then you are bond to fail. I do not feel sorry for these kids its not my job or your job to teach english nor is it the job of the school to makeup education as they go just to deal with the issue. Are child are the looser here wakeup people. Term your remarks are not racist they are true but no one has enough guts to say it like you do end of story everyone is way too worried about being politically correct. Please tell how that works out when your child is not even reading at a high school level upon gradation. Where to you think that leaves you child in life. It will leave them here "do you want fires with that" is that what you wish and hope for your child?

At September 20, 2009 at 9:54 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree that influx of hispanic students has had an impact on city test scores, but as was mentioned before these schools were in deep academic trouble well before the Hispanic population impacted them. But as was mentioned before, with the highest percentage of minority students in Lake County, you have an inner city school district similar to Ashtabula..Euclid..Cleveland..wherever. And you want to point fingers as to what caused these issues in Painesville..what drove the middle class residents from our city and replaced them with section 8 ghetto neighborhoods.

First and foremost, you can thank Les Nero, he thought guaranteed federal money for Argonne Arms was a great idea. Hmm..then along came the LMHA properties..more section 8 housing..word traveled fast in the Society of Self Entitlement. There should have been a billboard that read “NEW and FREE HOUSING in the Great City of Painesville..COME ONE..COME ALL”. Next thing you know, we become inundated and overpopulated by welfare folks..irresponsible mothers who get pregnant just to have kids and get more food stamps..consider its impact to the neighborhood and the city’s image.

The middle class folks pull up stakes and got the hell out of Dodge. But wait, their houses wouldn’t sell cause no one wanted to live there..so they became rental property and more inner city folk moved in and continued to push the middle class out of the city. Think I’m wrong..Think I’m being racist..ask anyone who used to live here 25 years ago. There are still a few elderly couples in some of our worst areas..ask them what happened. Take a class in urban studies...and when you come up with an answer..maybe you can solve the plight of inner cities across the nation. I'm sure Cleveland would pay you big $$$ for your answer to remedy their problems.

So don’t blame the Hispanic population for being the root of our problems in this city..the problems were here well before they ever became an issue. And your response about Hispanic kids not being able to do their homework cause no one speak English in the house is nonsense. A number of Hispanic children speak better English than their minority counterpart cause their parents have stressed the importance of learning English to function in our society. Get past your hatred and racism..and you might be surprised how intelligent they are. Look at the ODE test scores..Hispanic children are gaining and in some areas passing black children..place your blame where it is due.

So, candidate's night? What info are we going to get? What questions are we hoping they answer?

At September 20, 2009 at 1:43 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

All I can tell you is the first meeting each candidate will be given some time 5 minutes to explain their campaigns and views of what they want to do with Painesvilles future. Then rotating questions for the candidates.
In the second questionaires will be handed out and candidates will randomly pick a question out of the hat. Don't hold me to this I'm getting this information second hand. Please note the date of the second debate is now October 21,2009.
In the above comments I will need some time to think about them. First now the Black children are holding back the Hispanic children in 9:54 comment? Maybe the Black children along with the White children are not getting the proper education because all the emphasis is on the Hispanic children. I think Tuesday night meeting at HOLA will explain alot.

At September 20, 2009 at 3:42 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anonymous 9:54, if the hispanic children speak such good english why then the need for all the ESL classes and programs? Tell me. It is not racism. It is fact that our citizen children are getting the short stick on education due to the spanish draining our resources and time. This needs to end. Let's attend the Tuesday meeting and make sure that Dahlberg doesn't take any more from our children to give to the hispanics.

At September 20, 2009 at 4:09 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

"First now the Black children are holding back the Hispanic children in 9:54 comment?" No..that is not what was said. What was said is that our city schools were in state of academic emergency well before there was an influx of Hispanic students.

"Maybe the Black children along with the White children are not getting the proper education because all the emphasis is on the Hispanic children." Maybe you should you look through some ODE report cards for our school from years past before you start blaming the hispanic community. Maybe it's the other way around and let's see who was catered to and denying my children a good education years ago...

Anyone can spew hate and racism, which is all you're doing..get your facts and figures straight before you start blasting an ethnic group as being the root of our city's school problems. You're starting to sound like Dahlberg..

Anyone can spew hate and racism? What was said? 9:54 stated the hispanic chidren are being held back? Is that a racist statement? I have a pretty good idea what caused the problems, and to be honest I do not have a solution and have not heard one viable way to solve it. Where are all you people when theres a board meeting?
First close open enrollment? Send your child to a private school? Home school? Right now there is no way my daughter would send my grandson to Elm St. He is a child in need of an education , not a number to be used in some social experiment by the local schools. and I question the logic of any parent that does send their child there.

So the city sends cars out to move garage sale signs? Good idea. Now send the same two out this week and move all the couches, van seats off of all the porches in town. That lady at the corner of Walnut and S.State has a yard sale all summer. Wonder who she knows? Painesville is an expensive Hooterville run by clowns! One plus I only rent you people with an investment here well are so screwed.

At September 20, 2009 at 5:15 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

From my posting at 9:54, we just have to agree to disagree on issues, but find a common ground to solve these problem affecting our city schools today. A number of great people from year past and present day graduated from these schools..the problem is bigger than just what are our schools are or are not doing.

And your right, I question why I send my kids to city schools..daily fights in hallways..cafeteria..constant bullying. White kids getting beat up on the way home school cause their not part of one minority or another. Groups of black and hispanic kids constantly fighting after school for dominance or self preservation. Yeah..you ask yourself why..is it getting better..am I making the right decision..time will tell.

And I apologize for the Dahlberg remark..she is about racist and unreasonanle as they come..just flustered with these issues.

Well lets take a look at when the test scores started to fail and see what the community make up was? It has to do with income level and of story. Middle class familys place value on education and lower income families do not. Its a fact please dispute it. I would guess the decline started when the middle class left town and the reason they could is because they had an educucation that would afford them to move from the sitution. This happened to Cleveland and look at that school system and if you read its now happening to the innerring communities that surround Cleveland. Those that can move do and those that cant stay. Its not racist it how the world works there are many blacks that have left and moved to good school ect. Fact is Painesville is turning into Cleveland with section 8 and rentals anybody want to live in Cleveland, if Painesville does not stop the train its on What happened to Cleveland is going to be our future. Are you racist if you can move?

People, let's get to the root of the problem and stop the name calling and accusing the other guy of being a racist.

Don't agree with someone, then you are called a racist. Students get a bad grade because the teacher hates them. A kid strikes out it's the umpires fault because the he called a ball a strike. Someone says something you disagree with then you blame him and call him a racist. One thing I have noticed is that only the whites seem to be called racist. Sorry to say, that just ain't so. I have been treated worse by minorities who think they should have more rights or entitlements than the next guy because there were slaves over a hundred years ago or they are just in this country for a better life. Ever hear of the term "reverse discrimination". Sorry, want to be treated equally and with respect, then you need to do the same to everyone else. That goes for EVERYONE and NOT just the minorities. Hispanics, want to be accepted, then learn the language and get involved in the community instead of letting V. Dahlberg do the talking for you. She only makes demands of the community and doesn't try to become part of the community. There are many charitable organizations to help who by the way help everyone, regardless of race. There are poor whites and blacks who are stuck in welfare system that need to find a way out. These people need to increase their education in order to get better jobs and become an asset to the community and not a burden.

Guess what, that starts with education. Some parents and students blame the teachers. The teachers and the school board blame the parents. The superintendent says we can only educate what you send us. Education is the key for all the kids regardless of their race. If we keep letting down our children then they a going to be stuck in the vicious circle of welfare, crime, low paying jobs that they will pass on to their children.

The fact remains we have all the problems of a poor inner city with low test scores and depreciating property values due to the high amount of rental property and bad economy.

Term has questioned the Tea Party Protests that have been going on all over the country. Well, from what I see, agree or not with these people, they are actually making an effort to get their elected officials to listen. I think even Term would say we could use this kind of involvement at city council and school board meetings. If you really want change then it doesn't end with a vote. You got to get involved and attend these meetings and voice your concerns or we will be headed down the same path to nowhere. The people that attend these look like the ones who lived in Painesville 25-30 years ago. Just ordinary everyday people who care.

Just my opinion.

What's up John?
Did you cut a deal with NOAA? only certain landlords?

How are you going to effectively deal with rental problems in this city if you have to turn around and vote against them on something?

Maybe I need to rethink where you stand on the rental issues?, or please explain what is going on.

Yes we have some problems that could very easily get out of hand, Kids fighting after school, in school, where is the administration? V.Dahlberg left the ranch and she staged a demomnstration from St. Marys to Veterans Park after the ICE raids and thats where I saw the most disturbing site I have seen in Painesville. Mexican flags carried high and CHILDREN laughing and dragging the American flag on the sidewalks, This I viewed with my own eyes. No permission from the City or St. Marys. Than a little later in the year she stages another march{with permits] and I can't say it nice but she brings some farm worker organizer to speak and this jerk wants to "Take back the country that was his forefathers" hes not an Indian either all this with Dahlberg claspping and moving the listeners. Thats what shes about!

However this is country that every other country trys to get into be it legally or ilegal. If we are so bad then stay in your own country since its so much better. There are many reason why people want to come one being you can say what you feel and drag our American flag on the ground, because that is what America is FREEDOM! now that your here please speak english and follow our rules and if you cant please head back to your country because this country is under no obligations to make it any better for you. I really could care less what your skin color maybe if you cant show any respect why should I give you any???? That being said for the people in Painesville that fail to show respect to this city and its people go live some place else.

VD has been on the Board of Painesville Area Chamber of Commerce for years. Someone mentioned earlier that she wasn't on it any more, but that has to be a new development if true. She was still on the board in 2008. The Board defended her when they were questioned about why they would allow her to be on the board. Says a lot about the Chamber, doesn't it?

This is what you do to become a community activist, you embedd yourself in as many local charities, organizations, community politics as you can along with the chamber, she is known to both area colleges, most charities, business groups what have you. It must work as she came to my attention three years ago about a letter the former Council President wrote to U.S. Sen. Mike Dewine, She even threw him under the bus when she admitted at a council meeting she penned the letter and only wanted it on Painesville City Stationary.
She was in DeWines camp then. Now I understand she is buddying up with Sen. Brown. She was in Iowa representing Democrats at the primary they had there. Do not under estimate this person she has made the right connections..

VD does live in Ashtabula, no kids in the school system. But HOLA evidently has opened an office in Victoria Place since that is where the Tuesday meeting will be held. so I guess that's how she can be on the Chamber of commerce. Although, she didn't have an office in Painesville in 2008 and she was on the Board. Go figure. She probably called the Chamber racist and they caved.

Last month VD spoke at Lakeland and it was written up in the News H. she said "We sometimes have to fight for our rights (in the U.S.)," Well, folks, it's time we fought for our rights. The rights we have earned. The rights we have paid for. the rights of American citizens! Not illegals trying to grab what they can! We cannot let this go on. We must stop VD!

I believe Ms. Dahlberg was on the chamber representing Latino businesses in Painesville. Also to my surprise the Natioal Chamber of Commerce would like the government to scrap E-verify now I wonder why?

That's a no brainer. E-verify is too restrictive for illegals. They want to take more of our jobs. Please, America, wake up before it is too late. See what is happening to your country.

Amen 1:11 if your not here legally really what rights do you have? How about spending some time learning US history and english and studying to become a US citizen, but they cant do that can they because they stole in in this country and then try to get freebies that should goto a US citizen, if the US would stop giving them free things and programs to help better them, what about bettering all the laid off US workers and helping them with their needs, that right they dont qualify because they use to make too much. Why are we giving our resources to people who have dont rights to them. DV said they need to fight for their rights then do that back in Mexico or whatever country you came from because that is were your fight belongs.
