Very interesting and loud meeting about extended housing at Hal Werner's Town Hall meeting close to 100 residents attended. Over 100 reasons to do it, and over 100 reasons not to. I think the city will never rezone that property, and the school system would be crazy to sell it for this purpose, way to mamy residemts against it.
Still no reason for some of the comments overheard.

Rita's, got her goons in the B.D. trying to put a lid on complaints. Trouble is she's ignoring the things the people are complaining about. Want to get petty? Go look at the sidewalk in front of Abby's house, bad shape will see get a letter bet not. "Selective Enforcement".
Heard the Hispanics are having a party in the park this Saturday. Hope they have payed all the fees to the city like the rest of us.
The party is for the new Mexican radio station in Painesville it 88.3 live music from 10 til 10. With nothing on the sign I wonder if the city even knows? Maybe someone will invite them to a hot dog at Hals pic-nic?
The building department has a scam. My neighbor would call for the smallest things, and they would be on me to do something. I had a pile of leaves that was about 3x3 feet and maybe 3 inches high. I had to remove it because it wasn't compost.
When I bought my house, I cut down a bunch of overgrown weeds/brush/tree/bushes. I was waiting to get a truck to load them up and get rid of them. They sat in a pile in the backyard for about 2 weeks. Sure enough, a letter from the city saying I had 2 weeks to remove them. They were there for years, I just cut it down.
I was working on landscaping the backyard, and the front yard got a little out of control. Sure enough, a letter saying the weeds were too high. Come on, I can't do everything all at once.
When I got the letter about the leaves, I sent a letter back with 10 pictures of clear violations in my neighbor's yard (I know he was the one complaining, because he was the only neighbor I had), with a description of each one and citing the section of the city code that it violated. I know when the inspector was at my house, they had to see these on their own, but I sent all this in a nice package.
What happened????????? Absolutely nothing. You can drive by there today, and the violations are still ongoing, and this was about 3 years ago.
The only action I ever got was from the Lake County Health Board. He had large drums that filled up with rain water and was a hazard for mosquitos. I didn't want to be an a-hole and call on him, but after years of putting up with him calling everytime a weed popped up in my yard, I had to. Within 2 days someone from the County was there and made him dump the drums out.
As for the City, no action. I finally moved because I couldn't put up with it anymore. Way to go Painesville!
If you let extended housing in at that State St. school site. what next? I have learned watching the northend when you let government housing in two or three more follow. Painesville already has to much tax exempt property in town without adding more.
What will that property look like in 15 years what if funding is cut.
If you have a problem with a sidewalk get on line and send in a complaint.
I'm sure the city knows but I doubt a permit was purchased like we would have to. Ok, you city officials reading this blog (and we know you do) answer this. Did this hispanic group get a permit? If not, next time we need to use the park you better not charge us, or anyone. If it is free to latinos -- it is free to tax paying americans! Get it! We are sick and tired of you playing nice nice with them and making us foot the bill. So come on and answer. Did they or did they not?

Wow that was particularly vicious. But realistically, very representative of this blog.
You want to talk about selective enforcement of zoning rules..take a drive down Fairlawn..Lawnview..maybe stroll over to Jefferson...maybe over to Nebraska St.. Better yet..take a drive past the city garage on Storrs St..weeds..peeling paint..gutters falling off.. Where are the "code enforcement" folks at..in the South end of town messing with folks who had have piles of leaves or grass in their backyard. And why would that be..hmm maybe because their easy targets, will fix the problems quickly cause they don't want to harassed by the city, and for the most part..actually care about the upkeep of their property. The other properties..slum landlords who don't care..know the system..and a building department that won't mess with them.

I have heard some stuff around about steele mansion. The owner wanted to start filming there next week, but is telling everyone that Painesville wont let him and yes he is citing Rita as the main person who "wont" let him. From my understanding he is starting some nasty rumors about the law director and city manager in an effort to get people on his side. I dont know much about this but I did watch the city counsil meeting on tv and he lied several times. This whole thing I find interest and you have commented in other blogs you do too. Why dont you do another one on this one and maybe give the cities side and his side. My thoughts are this if you really has the money to fix it let him why not if not well it cant stay like that. But I thought you might find it interesting and a nice change and maybe people would give you break I personal like your blog dont see eye to eye with you everytime, but still you make some great points. I think the steele mansion issue would hightlight some of Rita's good and bad points and maybe give you break from being onesided just thougth.. You know more about this then I do. The City Managers first and most important responsibility is to make sure that structure is safe to work inside of it. I for one, right now wouldn't even want to venture inside it. If they film a movie at the site and the building comes down and the Fire Dept. has to dig people out, the first person that will be blamed would be the CM. I understand her reasoning. I do not know the owner of this property but he left me with a bad first impression. At the podium at a council meeting his cell phone went off, he proceeded to hold up his finger to council and answer the call. Shows poor judgement or lack of respect. I have said in the past that I would like the mansion rebuilt, I just don't see this as the route to take. Anyone out there has more information please chime in.
Selective enforcement why us in the southend? As punishment for electing Hal Werner our councilman. I agree with everything Term mentioned at the council meeting he brought up the city garage and the house next doorthat the city owns. Along with not being a Werner fan last night at the town hall meeting former coucilman Bill Horvath showed what a bitter person he is, where were your meetings Wild Bill? You never asked us you just voted the way you were told.

Term, I really dont know much either other then what has been said. Which really since it did not come from CM or him not sure what to think. I agree with you that place really does not look safe at all. I watched that meeting and if I have to go off that then I agree with you. It would seem to me you would want to work with the city to get it rebuilt and not piss them off which by his actions at that meeting he seemed to not to care one bit if he did that. But telling people Painesville wont let you film there is a lie you cant film there its unsafe and your right people would get hurt then what. Like I said this would highlight some of Rita's good and bad points. She is correct not safe now, however maybe work with him and get the job done. People are posting on other blogs and other websites that the reason filming wont start is because Painesville wont allow it. Which Term is a lie you can film there cause it unsafe and if the owner would fix the issue then it would be safe. I guess this guy was holding auditions for this film in June and July and told people that Painesville was the location. Yet its my understanding that the issue with city has been ongoing for months? I was just thinking since you can be a thorn in some peoples sides I mean that in a good way Term and maybe if you did another blog on this maybe the city and owner will work together to save the place and everyone wins. Painesville keeps history and he films his movie.

One difference between the north side of Painesville and the South side is the inspector. Noelle handles north of Rt. 20 and we know that she has a reputation for citing the whistleblower, not the offender. She just plain doesn't do her job and when someone throws a violation at her she is mad so she discourages this by citing the one reporting. South of Rt. 2 is the new inspector and maybe he is just actually trying to do his job. We need another like him.
It wasn't Arlene that got the certified letter, I heard about.
To TERM at 9:24am/8-20-09...Rita's job isn't to make sure the building is safe to work inside and out of. That is the job of the building department, should they choose to accept it! Of course, last time I had a dealing with the City's building department I was less than impressed with their demeanor and with the results I got.

Anonymous at 9:35am/8-20-09...I'm not a big Hal fan, but I do like that he actually tries to participate in council meetings and gets involved. Plus he did get back to me about a road problem and seemed to be genuinely concerned. I'd take him over Horvath any day, though I think Hal's delivery and demeanor turns a lot of people off. Bill got fired up at a town hall meeting? Too little too late, I say! I voted for Brad Deane in the last election. The south side missed their chance by not voting in the best man for the job. Now he's elsewhere in government (higher up than local) and I doubt we'll see him in Painesville politics anytime soon, or at all for that matter.
Noelle was the one who I dealt with (the 08/20 4:23 post). She ignored every piece of evidence I gave her about my neighbor's property.
Anonymous 11:12...define "special" for us. She didn't get her paperwork completed properly, so she can't run for re-election, more attention to detail next time Ms Becks. When I look at the candidates running for council, I also look at their backgrounds, work history, levels of education..etc..etc. I look at their individual accomplishments and successes in life..Flock..Hada..Hach..professional careers.. higher levels of education where are Arlene's successes? Other than provide some humor at council meeting, which may or may not have been intended, she was woefully out of her league in offering input and suggestions on matters affecting this city. For those individuals who think Becks is a wonderful council member..futural mayoral candidate..whatever..what are you basing your reasoning on, color..race??? There are more exceptionally qualified people of color.."Americans"..not African..Mexican..Asian..whatever living in this city that need to run for council. Brad and Hal beat Bill? If I remember Bill had a tight race against a homeless person one year, Maybe Bill lost because he listened more to the people on council and less to the people in his ward. If the people were satisfied the election should have been 20% Deane, 20% Werner and 60% Horvath. Bill should only be bitter with himself.

Horvath shot himself in the foot when he wrote the letter on City stationery in support of the illegals. That showed his true colors to many of us. Eyes were opened and Horvath lost! More of that on the horizon.

Tony Galiardi,seems like a very concerned Painesville resident who would probably do a good job on council. [has a wellrun web site about his campaigtn. My only knock on him was when the school administration was explaining the 50% polcy he represensented the business community and was on stage in a panel discussion in favor of the policy. Its a bad policy.
James Fodor seems to be running a stealth campaign hes going to have to do a better job of explaining his views of Painesville. I want to here more than I'm a retired asst. superintendent of the Painesville School System.
Joe Hada I've known Joe most of my life, but somethings changed, I don't see the same person that was voted on council over 25 years ago. His rudeness to some councilmembers I can't explain away, and when he made a charge of malfeses against Andy Flock and then didn't follow up? My way or no way doesn't get to many things done. The faith and trust he puts in the City Manager seems questionable to alot of people.
The citizens of Painesville will decide what direction they want to take.
Fodor also was very much in favor of the 50% grading policy, so that says a lot about him right there. Also, has he attended any council meetings? I was told he hasn't, but would like someone to verify that. If he doesn't attend, he has no business running for council. Doesn't give a good impression.
I remember seeing Mr. Fodor at a meeting about three months ago, during the downtown planning proposal. I believe he serves on the zoning committee. Yes he's a promote the 50% policy. Mr. Galiradi was at the
July meeting. Mrs. DiNallo has been at all council meeting since she anounced her run. Mr. Murphy has attended all the meetings this year. Joe Hada serves as Council President and I believe he has been at all the meetings.
Just something to add here. Right now I believe Lori DiNallo is a shoe in for a seat,why? We are losing both ladies on council this election and I believe the city feels more comforable with a woman in at least one of the seats.

The County, Mentor, and Painesville Township can't stand the leadership in Painesville, and will do nothing to co-operate with them. Concord Township is afraid Painesville will try to annex more land. Ask if that agreement was in the JEDD?
What has Rita done for the homeless other than allow them to live under the bridge? Isn't she one of the ones that fought against Project Hope being in the city?
I can remember her getting an award from Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs a few years ago for solutions for helping the homeless, I'll try to find it.

The fight against Project Hope was because when it was originally set up by the county it was supposed to be rotated throughout cities in Lake County. Yeah, sure, like any other low income program, the county gets it in Painesville and then it stays in Painesville.

Heres the facts Mr. John Murphy for the last 4 years has funded the free breakfast every Sunday for the the people that need a meal on a Sunday morning, ask the Reverend. no cigarettes,alcohol. drugs. Just Scrambled eggs. hash browns, grits, bacon, sausague toast, and coffee. Why? Because its the Christian thing to do. Have you ever seen him ask for a slap on the back, an Award. Feeding the Homeless is a very noble thing to do and very good for the soul, but it has nothing to do with being qualified to make decisions as a council person.
and, you shouldn't have broken the rule, it makes it very much clearer you are using this site as a support Murphy site and not as a neutral "air your concerns site" like I was told it was.

Charles Bennett..Gary Richter..Dennis Conomy to name a few..the worst panhandlers in the county, go to Project Hope and ask the homeless about their views of these individuals. The people you see Murphy aligning himself with are the ones who can’t go to the homeless cause of their drunkenness and violent behavior. Visit the city court website..maybe visit the police department..ask for information about these individuals..hmm. Maybe its because Bennett is the self-proclaimed “King of the Homeless”…can help John spread the word..or maybe it’s to get cheap labor to pass out John’s campaign literature or work the polling stations. Who knows where John volunteers the remainder of his time at..the YMCA..Forbes House..any of the city youth programs..hmm never seen him at any of these events unless it’s a city event where he can pass out campaign literature.

Helping your fellow man? You know the names of a few homeless people. Do you know any of the other 55to 60 people there on a Sunday morning? Some probably as young as rwo and some as old as seventy. If it comes down to John losing an election because he helped the homeless I know he could live with that.

The Safety Director/ City Manager would I'm sure had the car ticketed and towed. If this campaign comes down to false accusations and or lies only the residents will be cheated. What next? When I seen candidate so and so stop a car on State St. near Morley Library and buy from a convicted drug dealer some crack cocaine? Lets start worrying about Painesville people.
