'DIVERSITY"

I hear that word thrown around here like its something we chose to do. Most people believe that "Diversity" has alot to do with race and or nationality. Big surprise folks I believe our diversity comes from economics instead of the fore mentioned reasons. University Hts, has diversity but it seems to be along the lines of income and education. Lets face it wealthy people like to live around wealthy people. Well educated people seek the same.
That brings us back to Painesville for the most part you have low income white, black, and hispanic people making up the majority of the population, run the numbers.
Even if you go back forty years I bet Painesville had a higher percentage of college graduates than it has today. I remember when most of the teachers lived in town, my family doctor lived here, attorneys, even high ranking state and county officals. What drove them away? White flight? Maybe but would a wealthy highly educated black man want to raise his family here? Hispanic as they reach a certain step on the economic ladder also head for the hills. Are all these people racists? Do they just want what best for all there families? Ryan Homes has an interesting flyer about the homes in Liberty Greens, and Heisley Park. A map, Riverside Schools ect, nowhere on the flyer does the word PAINESVILLE appear, why?
Probably two of the largest employers in Painesville the city. and the school district can't get there employees to live here why?
Joe Hada made a presentation of why he thinks upscale housing will work on the hospital site, he brought up Liberty Greens and Heisley Park, what do you think the results would have been if they were in the Painesville City School District? I put the post up about Louisville, Colorado and expected more resposes. What any great location needs is an excellent school system. We're half way home with the new buildings, but brick and mortar do not make an excellent system. We can be a minnie Cleveland system, or a Chagrin Falls system its what the people want for their childrens future and the future of Painesville. Spend your education dollars wisely and expect results from your students. That is the key for Painesville future.
People will flood a city with a high ranking school system.

Perception?

New school buildings mean good schools. Low performing students mean bad teachers. New upscale housing means a great place to live. A fancy development plan for downtown means people and businesses will flock to the city. A city council that works together and listens to different ideas.

The reality, none of the above statements apply to Painesville.

It's the people that make a city a great place to live.

New housing isn't going to solve everything just as the New Market didn't bring business to the city. We need to address the fact that we have over 50% rentals and over 700 different landlords in the city. They take what was one a single family home divide it into two or more rental units. A single family home that was once a place to set down roots and raise a family is now change into a cheap place to live for just a short time until you move on. No wonder the pride in Painesville is on the decline. A home that took pride in the neighborhood is change into an overcrowded and sometimes crime filled flop house.

For Painesville to be a great place to live again we need to all work together. We have three at large council seats open this November. That means all three will represent everyone. Who gets elected is not for me to decide. It is for everyone in the city to decide. We all have time to listen and to ask questions of the candidates running. Don't know who is running then find out. If you think it is time for a change, then ask questions. Voting against someone isn't helping the city. We need to vote for the best three who can help make this city better. A long term incumbent may or may not be the best choice. Same as a first time candidate.

If you feel strongly about making Painesville a better place to live then everyone needs to become an informed voter. Voting for the status quo or just for change isn't going to do it.

Term,
What a great Post, you are one fine Racist, and I like that, what we need to do is run all of the Latinos out of town and things will get better, it was great back when they lived East of madison, that is why everyone wants to move out of here.

And as far as vote goes why bother there is no one running worth anything.

There is alot of truth in this post. No one with a high income will move downtown until our school system can be rated higher. The system has to raise its standards. Ideas like the 50% policy will drive scores down and not up. We must insil in all children and parents the importance of a quality education, quit giving them prizes for attendence and make them responsible for their futures. The schools should not be look at as glorified babysitters.

All our civic leaders seem to be on the wrong page. The most important qualities we seak in
Painesville, we want to be safe, we want excellent schools, good roads. We would trade cheap electricity for any of the above. No one will buy a home for cheap electricity and put up with the rest, will they?
The thought that Painesville was ranked so low in safety and education should have tattled more concern than it did. I'm ashamed to call Painesville home now.
Oh and Term who ever you are, thanks for opening my eyes.

When you make general statements about our school system what do you base your conclusions on? The State scorecard?, first hand knowledge?, how your kids turned out?, what?

As far as I know you don't have much if any involvment with our schools other than to put them down every chance you get, just like you do for the city, the city manager, the council, and probably your neighbors too.

As far as my involement I and the rest of property owners get a bill twice a year, does this give me a right to question the administration?

The state scores for Painesville City Schools speak for themselves. Lowest in Lake County is not something to be proud of.

As for crime, we all seem to know where the trouble areas are. I would be interested in the statistics on how many crimes happen at rental property vs owner occupied. Also, how does this rate compare to other cities?

I still say that most of Painesville's problem are with the high number of rental property.

At July 24, 2009 at 1:13 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

Badger, I share your concerns but rentals will be a big part of Painesvilles landscape until we fix the other problems around here. I will post the next Rental Task Force Meeting so you and others can view and ask questions to answer your concerns. Its going to take awhile to turn this ship around but its turning. If we had an excellent school system the landlords would love to sell their properties at a handsome profit, or charge rents that would eliminate the deadbeats. Think about it.

At July 24, 2009 at 1:27 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have children in the school system, I am a property owner and pay taxes, so I am qualified to speak on the schools. Our children are being deprived of a quality education. The 50% policy has not helped test scores, just sets the standards lower. Ask the principal at Harvey when they take attendance. Third period? you wan to know why? Because the mexicans can't get to school on time. Probably because they are up until all hours running the streets. They need to be counted for attendance for money allocation so attendance is delayed. If my kid can get to school on time, they should be able to.

We are stuck with apartments. Nothing much can change with these. We can and should do something about the number of the older single family houses being chopped up into many units. Also, multible families in the same house has to be addressed. I'm not sure the Rental Task Force will address these or have the authority to do so.

I agree the ship may be slowing down but we need to keep it out of the rapids or it will go over the falls.

Term. I just want you to know how profound this post is. If everybody stopped and thought about it we have no one to blame but ourselves for the way things are in this community. The change is in our votes, how we deal with our family's and finding the things we all believe in and ignoring the things that make us view others in a different light.
We must believe in rules and respecting others. Thanks

Term, when you are looking at this "along the lines of income and education" you are on to something.

Bettering the community as a whole starts with education. More education leads to more civilized behavior, better incomes, less crime, everything gets better.

Perhaps what some folks label 'racism' could be more accurately called 'classism'. Higher class people don't want to live with lower class people. It's not necessarily snobbery. If you've made the effort to better yourself, you want to live around people who have the same expectations, standards, and lifestyle that you do. You will move away from noise, fighting, crime, unkept houses, etc.

People with that higher standard of living are not going to want to move into an area of lower class people, so as long as Painesville is perceived as being a trashy town full of ignorant low class people (of whatever race) the higher income people aren't going to come.

And no, I'm not saying that all low income people are ignorant and badly behaved. I know they aren't. And I know that higher income folks also drink, commit domestic violence, etc. I'm talking in broad generalities here. Where is it going to be more pleasant to live, a poor neighborhood or a more wealthy one? Which do you pick, if you've got enough money to be choosy?

He could have Hal campaigned on change, everything from replacing the city manager to changing to a Mayors form of city government. The first thing he does is agrees to hire an Assistant City Manager sight unseen, because the city manager told him she was swamped with work? He talked about all the resolutions he would bring to council, where are they? What happened? I guess you have to ask him. Is his reelection number one on his list? Does he want to be treated equally by Joe Hada? Hal how many of the other councilpeople even congradulated you on your victory? Everything he does is calulated on HIS future, not Painesville's. Oh if you think I got to the dance late, I called this a month before his election. Check it out. Lets pick on old ladies and her hairdressing businesses that will make Painesville a better place to live. Hal you better hope someone needs your vote in the future. I bet most of you don't realize how many landlords keep all utilities in their name and just charge a flat rate added to the rent. Sure saves a lot of trouble and keeps the city from knowing who is in the building, saves money on the splitting of utilities legally, keeps the city from legally enforcing occupational size limits (try to prove how many people are there when there is only one utility account), and on and on.

The landlords in this city have so many of you fooled, most of our illegal/drug/scumbag troubles could be solved quickly, just get landlords to put standards in place that prevents renting to them. They have ways they can do it legally and not even fair housing can over ride it. We just have way too many in it for a fast buck.

And who do you think is going to move into these apartments and rental houses??? Take a drive down N. State St..N. St. Clair..Jefferson..E. Prospect..the hispanic community have run out the ghetto trash that were there for years and destroyed these areas. I remember families moving out of these areas 20yrs because a certain element forced them out..the hispanic community isn't your problem here...if anything their actually improving these areas.

The judge doesn't generally ask if they are legal. He has openly said that he doesn't care. Why is that? We know they are illegal because they openly say they are. They are proud of it and of how they are taking advantage of our generosity and all the benefits that go with it.
