"YOUR HOMETOWN, YOUR HOMETOWN"

This comment was posted on "PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM'

"Are they truly against illegal immigration or are they using that to get someone in the city administration?
I vote alittle of both, but more on the latter."

I'm assuming they mean elected, and not fired?

Well Painesville is the city on the right or wrong course on this issue?
What is the answer are we a bunch of us racists? or just people concerned with what laws are being ignored.
Should the city do more, less, the same?

Please be civil in your comments , people seem to pay attention if you don't just rant.

My answer is this.

I am a member of a minority in this town. I am constantly called racial names and have been verbally and physically threatened. I see violations to the housing ordinances that restrict the number of non-related people living in a house. I have total strangers come to my yard and use it as if it were there own. I have seen gardens plundered and yards turned to mud from all the traffic from the cars that all seem to have temporary tags. I have been sworn at in my own yard.

THE MINORITY I BELONG TO IS A HOMEOWNER.

I also have driven around town to the areas mention in other posts and have been amazed by what I see. I have called the police for what I feel may be a crime. I am satisfied by their response most of the time and I understand they have a very difficult job. That said, I have found you must be careful in how you report a crime. Now, I give little info on the race of the person until the officer shows up at my location.

Now on ILLEGAL immigration. I am against this wholeheartedly. You have shown me that you do not respect our laws and by your actions you do not respect my family or my property. I don't care what country you are from and I don't care why you came here in the first place. You are not above the law and shouldn't receive special treatment because you are here. The world is full of unfortunate people. Why does only one ethnic group demand that we ignore the law and learn a new language. Every other country in the world is restricted to the number of immigrants so why is this ignored for this country.

So, since these ILLEGAL immigrants don't respect the laws of our country and don't respect my family or property or most of all my country, then I refuse to show any respect for them. You came to the United State for a better life then do it legally and show some respect for our country. Then I will respect you.

The only way to make Painesville a better place to live is to make it attractive to families and business. We need to get people to invest in our community. Drug dealers, criminals and yes ILLEGAL immigrants are not going to invest in our town. Until we can decrease the amount of rentals, Painesville is going nowhere. If you have pride in your city the there might be hope.

One question.
Does the current population have the pride we had in the past? Do they care what happens to our city? I wonder.

The current administration has no respect for the legal citizens of Painesville. Most don't live here and could care less. The city has zero control and that is why Painesville is known as a santuary city. The CM is the root of the problem, when she retires shes gone, with us holding the bag.

You are missing an important aspect. Even if you want the city to do more what can they do? Immigration is not in their jurisdiction.

Badger:
Awesome Post!!!!! You stated it all in wonderful text as we have had to deal with for 14 years.
As POPEYE (in the comics stated) I've hads enough!
Your last statement about the current population having any pride hits it right on the hammer/nail head. When you are a renter, you could care less about laws/ordinances - as long as you have the roof and utilities and can afford them: when you cannot, you disappear into the night.
As for the imports, there are some that are legal: But, most of the Legal Latinos house those that are not legally allowed in this country to work/nor live. They are definitely here in P'ville/they are being exploited by slum-lords (high rent-inadequate utilities/water/plumbing/appliances
heating/roofing/windows that leak so much cold air in the winter that they cannot keep warm. You would be so surprised how many units in this city house these people in such negative conditions. It is so much like what they lived-in before they came to the U.S./Painesville City.
So, we have illegals/we have slum Lords preying not just on them but so many others.
If anyone thinks that this is untrue, all of you live in a fish bowl.
Yes Painesville City has a tremendous Illegal Import Population. Yes there are Federal Laws that state what this City must do to control illegal immigrants from entry. No direction from Painesville at all. Who do we hold accountable for this? The City Manager (Rita MC) and the City Council for being so ignorant that none of them even know the Federal Laws and always believing what she states. What is wrong with this City Council? Lazy, Lazy, Lazy. No one on this council ever questions the CM or ever demands a justification for her acts or recommendations.
Again, this Council is lazy and never ever asks for the proper legislative documentation/justification to allow all of you to ponder/place a vote that is based on pure facts/not hype/nor supposed emergency.
Back in the day, many many years ago - this council approved a March ballot entry, on the reccomendation of the appointed Charter Committee to allow this CM to have all Powers to be over every Department in this City. This issue was on the ballot in the early part of the year when most folks were on winter vacation and not available to vote or others just did not care. Unfortunately, this CM was granted more power than any other CM in any communities around us: nor any city communities in this State.
So, here we are in this mess.
Like Badger stated:Does the current population have the Pride we had in the Past? We had it, but it was disolved when ONE PERSON was given (by a slip-in vote) to be a Ruler over the individauls who are Elected Officials.
As of today, when you elected Folks vote on any issue - you have no last words at all.
When are any of you going to realize that you are the CEO's and she (the CM) is just your employee? If all of you cannot be HER BOSS - then all of you should just resign and let the courts appoint individuals to take your place!!!!
Agree or Disagree - that is your right.

How does this help Murphy get elected? All he told me was he would make the city enforce the occupancy codes in the city? Get a grant writer, and setup a fund to repair streets. I was surprised to see Painesvilles ranking in Cleveland Magazine we can't get worse can we?

The car wash is Saturday.. not Friday... and it would be wrong to have the city cars at a fund raiser.

Once again making sweeping statements that you can't back up, I'm sure. It is a problem having too many rental properties in town but you can't say that all renters are irresponsible and don't care. That's simply NOT TRUE.

Most of the "legal Latinos" house illegals? How do you know that? How can you make such a statement? I'm sure some do, but "most"? Can you back up that assertion?

As for the Federal laws you refer to - do you know them? What are they? I'd be interested to know what they are and exactly what the City is failing to do, legally. You seem so sure of yourself - how about some facts? If Rita and council are so ignorant, but you know about these laws, why don't you enlighten them? Put some pressure on them? If you've got truth on your side you can't be ignored for long, so go for it. Get a group of people together and raise hell. The law is the law.

Not bashing at all but genuinely would like to know where you get your facts. And don't just say "open your eyes and look around", please.

C Lady,

You added to my post with some great info. Thanks

I also agree that some of the landlords are the problem. They rent to people knowing full well that they will allow as many others to live in the same house. As you said, maybe not all people in the rental are ILLEGAL, but they let others who are live there that are ILLEGAL. They will charge extra for each person and thus greatly increase their income. The only thing that is important to them is the money. They take advantage of the ILLEGAL status to make more money. They could care less about the people who own homes in the area. With more than 700 different landlords in the city, this is a big problem and only getting worse.

For things to get better we need to address the landlords, tenants and enforcement of occupancy ordinances and our laws. Unless we address all sides of this issue, things won't get any better.

Now, for the city council election, how does discussing issues elect anyone. There are three positions up for election and we all can vote for the three people we think are best for the job and the city. If YOU don't like a candidate, then don't vote for that person. Term has posted info about several candidates here and they are all somewhat different in their views for the city. It is no secret that Painesville is highly Democratic. During the last election, most people voted for CHANGE. Maybe the time has come for change in city council. Since this is suppose to be a nonpartisan election, why not vote for the best people with some possibly good ideas to get Painesville back on track to be a better place to live.

People will attack my posts and call me a racist or uncaring. Well then, are our local government officials racist or uncaring when they run the homeless out of town? No one seems to want a homeless shelter in their back yard. Are these people less worthy help than an ILLEGAL immigrant?

I have worked at local food banks for years and have never not helped anyone who needed food. I have questioned the people running the food bank when I think abuse or fraud is happening. Fraud is only taking food from the truly needy. These charitable and government assistance programs are being stretched to the limit these days and wanting legal and financial responsibility is in no way racist or uncaring.

The News-Herald Readers turn July 10,2009

Too many similarites
Quite frankly, I'm getting tired of the "Readers turn" letters that refer to "illegals" and the attempt to sound the alarm, warning their fellow Americans about illegal immigrants that are supposedly trying to take over our country.
These letters all leave out something that seems obvious and is incredibly important: the "illegals" are human beings.Immigrants legal and illegal come here because they want the same things for themselves and their families all of you want for you and yours_freedom,security,peace, ect. They have the same concerns, fears, hopes, wants, and needs. They left their homes most likely out of desperation_so no, they are not out to get you or even take your jobs.
Borders are abitary-we made them up. There is no inherent difference between Mexico and the United States that result in a natural political border between them, just as Mexicans and Americans are not inherenly different. Yes our cultures and languages are sources of differences, but underneath all that there are key similarities: we are humans and we all deserve respect. The differences should be looked at as sources of learning and opportunity.
Instead of emphasizing over and over the "us vs. them" dichotomy and focusing on the otherness, maybe it is time we look towards a model of inclusion and support. Lets reach out to our sisters and brothers instead of shunning and shaming them. Lets welcome immigrants_legal and illegal_to America.

Stephanie Harig
Willoughby

Oh Stephanie, I know alot of people that would like to show you a place in Arlington, Virginia where alot of Americans gave all for the borders and the culture you have today. Yes even your right to make a statement like this. My only hope is you are young and will learn better, I just hope these views are not what you have been taught in our education system. TERM>>

In Stephanie's perfect world, all would be great. Unfortunately, that isn't the world we live in. She must live in her perfect neighborhood where everyone "RESPECTS" each other's rights and property. She can't have seen her neighborhood go from a family oriented one to a neighborhood of migrant tenants. One where all the kids played together to one where drunks walk down the street after the bars close. A neighborhood of home owners to a neighborhood of rentals. She has never had to argue with strangers in her yard when she asked them what they were doing and asked them to leave.

I don't have a problem with legal immigration. My problem is when we are expected to learn their language, customs, give up my right to enjoy my own property and overlook the fact that ILLEGAL immigrants are breaking the law. The first word that comes out of someone's mouth if you say anything against these issues you are labeled a racist. I guess the elderly lady from the council meeting is a racist too.

Seems to me, the Hispanic population is as much to blame as anyone. They are proud of their country but why are they not proud and respectful of ours? If they want to live here then be part of the community. I have yet to see them at our parades, youth sports in Rec Park (oh yes soccer but only themselves), or any volunteer organizations. Seems to me that if you want to use the system you need to be part of the system. Instead of calling people racist, why not become part of the community.

I would like to ask Stephanie what border do most of the drugs in the US come through? I would like her to walk in my shoes and live in my neighborhood for awhile and see if she feels the same. I would like to hear her response to someone verbally (F word) abusing her while she is sitting in her own yard. See her property values drop because of all the rentals.

Again, what has changed in the past 10 to 15 years?

Rentals and population.

We can't get business to come to the city. The ones here are going out of business. St. Mary's school closes after 147 years. Our local schools test results are declining. Our neighborhoods are in decline. Hospital leaving town. People who do work in town can't wait to get out of town after work.

The Friday night "Cruise In" is a start but seems to be the same people. How many are coming to the Wednesday night concerts? Not many. Drive thru town after 5 PM and there is no one there.

So who's to blame? City leaders, council, renters who don't care, our new population? Maybe all of us. We need to all work together or it will just get worse.

At July 10, 2009 at 4:07 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

No offense to any business but the ten things to do on Friday night on Doug Nagy's list.

The youtube video is great but to list a fast food restaurant, a bar, a massage parlor/spa or a wine shop as things to do in Painesville? You missed the check cashing stores, a few drug stores and the rest of the fast food places.

Not a great list and very little for a family with kids is it.

So here's my question. How do we know what someone's immigration status is? Do we assume that because there are a lot of people in one house, acting rowdy and disrespectful and not speaking English, that they are here illegally?

I think one of the dangers of a discussion like this is that we usually DON'T know their immigration status. We assume based on their behavior. And if we were to find out they were here legally, we would still dislike the behavior. Is that not so?

Legal or not, I think what people are objecting to is that the Hispanics are coming here and bringing their own culture with them, and not assimilating into our culture, am I right? We don't know their immigration status in most cases - we can't possibly. But people know that they don't like:

refusal to learn English
cramming too many people into one house
loud music at all hours
constant loud parties
unsupervised children roaming and making noise at all hours
garbage
disrespecting neighbors

We're having a culture clash here, it seems to me. Am I wrong?

What can we do?

If you KNOW that someone is here illegally, here's a website to help you report it:

ReportIllegals

If you're having a problem with your Mexican neighbors, try talking to them first. If they don't speak English, of course, that's a problem. Try talking to the kids, then. They will usually know some English. Talking to them may or may not work, but it's worth a try. (this has worked for me, I am lucky to have Mexican neighbors who are actually very nice people, if clueless about how certain things they like to do affect their neighbors)

If objectionable behavior continues, then all you can do is what you can do, depending on your tolerance for potential conflict. They're making noise at 11PM? Call the police. You see code violations? Call the city. Get in touch with other neighbors and present a united front. Make 'round robin' calls and complaints. Make noise of your own and keep it up. I have a feeling the city eventually tunes out one person who calls repeatedly. How are they going to ignore 10 people calling, emailing and writing constantly? Maybe they could, I don't know, but why not try it?

I wonder about the organizations who do "outreach" to our Hispanic residents. Do they spend any time at all teaching them how to be good neighbors who would be welcomed into any neighborhood? If they don't, they SHOULD.

The newspaper did a story on Painesville and not one word from the city administration about the influx of Hispanics legal and illegal, why Rita? Why not mention the new schools that are one-third Mexicans who can't speak the language and hold the test scores down that the school system has reverted to cheating, the 50% as an example. You and your stooges on council are the blame for letting this get out of hand. If you had any self respect you would resign.
