"AND ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST"

Well the rumors seem to be true the "Storm Cellar" is officially closed. I really thought this enterprise was going to make it. "The Abyss called downtown Painesville" strikes again. Quit writing fluff columns about Painesville and lets stop this trend.

we should probably blame ourselves for not patronizing such a nice place.

Who ever heard of a sports bar with 5 bar stools? A bar with seating up to 25 would have made a world of difference. Who wants to sit at a table to watch a sporting event?

Were going to build a transportation hub downtown? At the rate Laketrans going that will be another empty building.

A big loss to Painesville. With the college and the location, it would have been a start to revitalize downtown. Maybe the economy, college kids to young to drink, or the lack of anything else to do in Painesville after 2PM when almost every thing else on the square close was the problem.

If a nicely redone sports bar can't make it in Painesville, I see little hope for the cities new plans for the pricey new housing on the hospital property and the downtown development.

Happy 4th of July. Remember to thank a serviceman or a veteran on this truly American holiday.

Let's all fly the American Flag this 4th.

With the new population in Painesville, how many would really go to a sports bar to watch BaseBall, Football or Basketball?

Don't tell our City Manager she lives in a fantasy world. $185,000 for 900ft. good luck that idea is just plain ignorant.

The closing does not surprise me at all. Over $4.00 for a Burger, get real.
People come into P'ville to see this new sports place at 9:30 pm, and it is closed.
Sorry, but there is absolutely nada here in this City to attract and bring in anyone. If this city believes that new properties downtown will flip the trick, they are definitely in la la land. Heisley Park and Liberty Green has not accomplished their goals; neither will their high scale wishes for the hospital area and any other area in their revitalization plan.
Per capita income in this city is lower than low - as it has been and all of these wonderful dreamers have known this.

Back-Off and fix all of the infrastructure that you should be doing as you are responsible for this. Take a great wait-see on the economy before you start wasting taxpayer monies for your ideas of fluff and stuff; that is already proving that your direction is an abiss and is out of tune to todays Economy - namely the dollar values that are so negative in Painesville.
One of the Partners for the Sports Bar always told me that the reason most do not want to build and invest in Painesvile is the fact that the per capita dollars are way too low to support new ventures. So, why did any of you do this knowing the bottom-line figures?
There was never ever any survey to the Lake Erie nor Lakeland students to hear what they would like to experience in their College Town. Queens/Kings just decided that they knew better as to what would make them Happy.
OOps, did not work, and now it is History/Failure again.
Dream-On all of you that are Main Street advocates. You advertise too many items that do not exist in this city. Again, others come here and their responses are: "Where are all of the shops and why are the eating places closed down?"

Dream-On with your Crystal Ball Vision. This City is What It Is Today!! Way Back in the Day, this City was vibrant.
See the reality of what this City Administration has allowed to happen for many years up to the present: and maybe, just maybe, the truth will strike the administration on their Heads. No Hope here for this.

We've lived here for a long time, and this New Deal is One Big Joke!
Hoping we do not lose more than we have already Lost!

Things will pretty much stay the same as long as the present administration has its way, who decided who was the best develper for the hospital site? Council, City Planner, or was it the City Manager that can't even keep her house on the square in order.

Sometimes a business fails because of poor business practices, period, no other reason.

First, the idea of a college sports bar, it wasn't close enough to campus, the school is tooo small still to be the sole supporter of a college sports bar.

Second, General city support, this is a daytime city, 100 times more people here during the day than at night, yet for how many months they were never open for lunch?.

Third, No identity, advertised as a sports bar, not even close as far as atmosphere or food. As a college hangout?, not even close.

Honestly, they can't even say the people in the city did not try to support them, many groups had their monthly meetings there, Harvey class had a reunion there, etc.

My opinion was it was a bad business plan to start with and the owners were not flexible enough to change when it wasn't working. Want to make it work?, try a family style restaurant with good prices and selection, thats what this city needs and could support.

I remember this past winter the city held its chili cook-off in the building. Guess who wasnt opened to serve adults?

I called the Storm Cellar phone number and it still works. This would be cruel rumor if it's not true. Their number is..440-352-3087..Maybe closed for the 4th of July weekend

Before I posted this I went there and read the sign on the door thanking the community and stateing the business was for sale.
I have been hearing rumors about this and I didn't post until I was sure. I thought they would try to it least make it thru the PITP weekend. Like I said I thought this was going to make it. Some of you should talk to Richard Tibbets he has some interesting ideas to turn downtown around.

At July 4, 2009 at 7:11 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

Term for Tibbets? maybe I shouldn't speak for him. I had a conversation with him and he had a new way of getting the downtown going. God knows the present ideas don't seem to be working. Just looking for answers.

Tibbets is a Landlord just what we need 1 more on council.

And so what if a bar is gone ?

Council members???

No landlords, school employees, bus drivers, school board spouses, lawyers, Democrats, Republicans, blacks, whites, hispanics, all the other ethnic or religious groups, blog posters, or Term.

Who does that leave??? The homeless and the innocent new babies???

Eliminate a possibly well qualified person because he or she belongs to one of the groups above will do nothing to better the community.

Can't help but laugh at this one. Give it a rest about the survey already. You're just miffed because nobody listens to you. If you made sense and weren't so nasty/negative/sarcastic maybe you'd have better luck.

Painesville is not a "college town". LEC isn't big enough to be a significant influence here and Lakeland isn't in Painesville, you might have noticed. I don't mean that LEC isn't an asset. But one small private college does not a "college town" make. Unless you're Hiram, maybe!

There's got to be a way to bring life to a county seat after 4:30 PM, and on weekends. Chardon seems to do all right. But, here's a big difference I see between Painesville and Chardon - Chardon's square is a natural traffic route. Painesville's is not. And I'm not sure what can be done about that particular challenge.

Maybe we need a little "International District" - flavors of the world year round - interesting markets and shops, Thai and Indian restaurants and more, unique venues to pull people in. Maybe even a movie theater or something. Bulldoze Victoria Place and put in a Whole Foods or something. Maybe we need some sort of big retail anchor downtown to draw the traffic. And I DON'T mean a WalMart. Be great to have a Costco in town. . .

The Storm Cellar was nice, but the lack of visibility from the street hurt it. I always had a good time when I went there, and I thought everything was reasonably priced, but nothing ever lasts in that location. It's too bad, I hope the winery stays strong through the summer.

At the last years Painesville Party in the Park, I was tripped and fell down by a dog on a leash. I wasn't hurt because I fell in the grass, but I could have been. Why must people bring their dogs to the event? If a person is blind it would be okay, but if not, keep your dogs away!

At July 6, 2009 at 3:14 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Diversity you say? Where for the music for the Party in the Park is there any music with a Latin sound? Hillbilly music, abounds but a third of you population is forgotten, We will not forget.

At July 6, 2009 at 4:09 AM , Anonymous FedUp said...

Don't need Latin music at PITP. Just drive around my neighborhood anytime and you'll hear way more of it, way louder, than you'd ever want. Why people think the whole street wants to hear their music is beyond me. All I can say is that if anyone ever invents a device that can remotely destroy a boom box or car radio, I'll be first in line to buy one. I DON'T WANT TO HEAR YOUR MUSIC SO HOW ABOUT A LITTLE COMMON COURTESY, PLEASE KEEP IT DOWN!!!

I am tired of hearing all kinds of music at all times of day and night. But was the Latino music left out on purpose. Amego

Why does everyone think we have to have a thriving nightlife in this city?

Thriving nightlife usually means there is bars involved, dives or upscale they are still bars that will bring the same problems eventually.

What is wrong with this being a thriving daytime business/government/education city and a nice quiet, relaxing bedroom community at night?

If the majority of you ask yourselves what you really value in a community to raise kids, live, work, etc. I'll bet "thriving nightlife" isn't as high on the list as a few in this city want to force us to believe!

At July 6, 2009 at 9:24 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

I think by thriving nightlife their saying I want some entertainment, not just bars, but different resturant choices.
What people are talking about is a downtown Willoughby, Little Italy, Tremont District. An Idenity... businesses that are not found at every strip mall.

"Quit writing fluff columns about Painesville and lets stop this trend."

Ok so we should bad mouth the city so no new businesses will come here and people will read them at not shop at the business we have. I don't mind the trend of businesses trying to start here and create jobs. Some businesses will work, some won't. Better to try and fail rather than never try at all. Attempting new business is a good trend. Back when they opened, wasn't there some praise for the newly opened business trying to breathe new life into Paineville? How many times did you go there to support them? By bad mouthing the city I am more scared of the trend you are trying to start. You are trying to start a trend where no businesses come here and no new jobs are created. The city has to sell itself to new businesses and eventually some will come, stay, and be a big boost for the city. You are trying to prevent that from happening. Shame on you and your fellow blog posters for trying to prevent my city from growing and trying new things.

At July 6, 2009 at 1:45 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

Yes, lets blame this blog. for why Painesville has been on a downhill slide for a quarter of a century. I seen it coming.
"Shame on you and your fellow blog posters [11] for trying to prevent my city and growing and trying new things." What has this city tried NEW in the last 20 years, its the same old same old. The people that have been running this town should be the ones you direct your anger at. What there innocent?

Its all your fault Term for telling it like it is.If there was no blog. Millionaires would be moving here. The problem for the past 25 years? People just want to pretend there isn't a problem, and badmouth anyone who reminds them. Funny there is no one blaming the people that get paid to make thing right.

If the city moves forward with the proposed hospital site, I believe it will be the final straw to destroying Painesville. If we don't get it right this time its over period. I see know reason to move a family into downtown Painesville, it makes no sense.

At July 7, 2009 at 3:47 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

What makes sense is... Having a found raiser in the Township... You don't have to pay the 2% income tax...

At July 7, 2009 at 7:12 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Upscale young professionals would not subject their children to the Painesville City Schools. Liberty Greens and Heisley Park would have never been built if they were in the city schools instead of the township, it was a selling point.

This blog. is whats wrong with Painesville? I think its more the elected and administrative people of this town. What are the new ideas the city has? They don't seem to be working.

At July 7, 2009 at 9:34 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

The question no one wants to ask the people running for council? Would you renew the City Managers contract. That would tell the whole story.

At July 7, 2009 at 10:09 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

You don't get it do you. The Storm Cellar was new in Painesville. It was a new business. The point was that if we go out and tell all prospective business owners that painesville sucks and don't open a business here, how is that going to help painesville. The problem was not with the blog it was with your idea for a course of action. "quit writing fluff pieces" We have to sell our city to new businesses.

At July 7, 2009 at 1:24 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

I don't get it? What your telling me its perfectly alright with you to embellishing the truth. First off I have never said Painesville sucks. The problem with the downtown area there are to many empty storefronts, Why? I have heard the asking price for some of the buildings and thought that doesn't fit the business model, why would a property owner want empty buildings? Tax Write-off? Lets make downtown an enterprise zone if you find a business tentant for your building we will reduce your property tax 50% for the first two years. To the business owner we will reduce your utility expenses 50% the first two years in Painesville.
Whats the sense of owning utility departments if you can't use them? Could Mentor, or Willoughby be able to to this? Crazy idea? yeah but we could just keep printing "Fluff" stories in TGIF.

Maybe more potted plants around town would do the trick.

At July 8, 2009 at 7:24 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Your answer at 1:24PM pretty much explains why you drove a truck for a living. Banter all you want but let people who know what to do run Painesville.

Really? why would you slander such a great town as painesville city, we have an excellent school system, many high income neighborhoods [shamrock, tropical village, argonne arms, kensington, frederick street, nebraska street to name a few of the better ones], we also have great businesses, such as the senior center, the library, key bank, cvs, and BP... we also have a thriving downtown full of excellent culture if your not American, we have many historical buildings such as the abandoned train station and the abandoned apartment complex right on the heart of the river. To top it all off we have a crooked ex felon judge driving riders inn to the ground... who goes to eat their? they dont even look open half the time... and besides, you wanna see thriving nightlife to go BP on Richmond Street at 1 AM on a Friday, youll get to see all kinds of "nightlife"... just dont be too scared they dont know any English so your fine. All in all im proud to live in such a great town and look forward to the Downtown revitalization plan that theyve been talking about for 15 years plus.. its gonna happen real soon I just know it
