"MARY POPPINS POPS OFF"

Someone took me up on a guest post. Marry Poppins he/she has a comment to post.

Alot has been said about the ecomomy in Painesville in the past couple of months. Tommorrow another day our public servants have off, Monday the 16th, one that most of the people in Painesville have to be at work. I wonder if there is one councilperson with enough guts to pass a resolution to freeze wages and pay grades for the employees of Painesville City at least for one year? Do any of you know anyone in private industry getting raises? Unions tell them take it or leave it. Now we will see if this town has any leadership. Every Employee even City Hall.

No changes were made in this post. TERM>>

Pay raises...... not sure the guys putting the electricity on in a snow storm will ever make enough money. But the pontificators sitting at city hall conjuring up studies & making upper end salaries need an adjustment....... much like our home values.

Did you know..........

There are 612 homes for sale in Painesville ......
There are 131 homes in foreclosure in Painesville
There are 3 new homes being built in Painesville.....

House values have dropped 3% on resale homes and 2.5% on foreclosed homes and yet a new build has gone up 3%. Yeah, I know JT home values are plummeting all over unless you live in Gates Mills.

The roads are in pretty bad shape too........

Had a sigh of relief yesterday when my contract was renewed for another year but no raise or bells and whistles....... just so damn happy to be working and have a roof over my head. Eating spaghetti again but hey I'm eating.

If you're a vet living in a tent down in the flats, keep your chin up, Spring is coming.

Why is this leadership? If this thing is the best for the city then sure, but you sure haven't convinced me of that. I don't want to get into the economics of it but I'm not sure this is the best idea. Yes I do know people in private industries getting raises. Depends on the industry and situation but yes it is happening all over the place. So...With all of your wisdom, why should we freeze wages? Are you against even a cost of living increase?

I'm a Union Teamster and agreed to a 10% pay cut in January. Who in the private sector is getting raises? Everywhere I deliver its all about cutbacks. Wake up Painesville.

The people who run Painesville and most of there employees live in a very private place ,moneys short ask for a tax hike, you want safety don't you? Never have they ever given back.

Believe me there are more than 131 homes going or in forclosure in town . Check it out.
1 in 4 people in this country work for some form of government and they want the other 3 to support them.

Well we will blame the City but no one will blame Big Industry here I bet. The big oil companies and all of the people pulling in six figures plus every year that make the decisions that have bankrupted this country. I heard years ago that Forbes magazine predicted the housing market crash and I got the magazine. They outwardly blamed the interest only mortgage. They predicted that in California that the interest only mortgage would start a ripple effect that would swarm the country and I believe it did, so do the professional annalists. It created that type of loan to give people a chance at a house way outside their miens in the hopes that they would have the miens before it was due . Then, when the payment comes due they all "expected" to be making more money. When they did not make more, they lost their houses and the wave started.

So thanks for the credit up there in realizing that I would note that the housing market is in the crapper across the country and that Painesville is merely a microcosm of the entire country. But lets find a way to make the housing market the fault of the City shall we??

I will also point out that the City employee's have and continue to be very low paid employee's FOR THEIR JOB DESCRIPTIONS that is. They may get paid more than you, but what do you do and if working for the City in that SAME capacity, would they still make more than you? I looked and the Police for one are the lowest paid in Lake County. Do they have the easiest job in the county, bet not. So why the big difference in pay. One of the Lake County PD's makes almost $10.00 p/hour more, look and you will find. I used Police because I like the Police. They have some jobs over there that you could not pay me to do. As for the electric guys, "God bless you all". I know that you are electricians and that carries a badge of its own. You would be making more money in the private sector jacking up homeowners that can not afford their houses anyways to install the American dream of a finished basement.

Get the priorities in check people. I agree that cutbacks are good and can help, but the City does not make it's money in the private sector in the same way as big business. Like usual here however no matter how intelligent or spot on the argument there will always be those that point the finger anywhere that makes them feel better. Here come the insults...JT

JT. first off Mary Poppins did not blame the city for the economy that we find ourselves in. The housing market was never blamed on the city, and I think the $4.00 a gallon gas is what finally broke the bubble.
I disagree that city employees are "very low payed" when you take into account everything its better than the private sector, maybe that arguement would fly 25 years ago but not in todays world. I'm not just talking wages, but benefits also I've seen the numbers. God Bless them I for one never complained what someone made, and Mary Poppins didn't want to take any wages away [that was a freeze right] What I see is the city privatizing jobs, the cemetery doesn't have to be taken care of by city employees? Don't price yurself out of a job.
Whatever profession you chose in life you have a pretty good idea what the wages are of that position. I hope to think a person decided to be a Firefighter, Policeman, Teacher for more than a check. JT. its called reality, thats all.
Finally JT. the city doesn't make its money in the private sector but depends on people that do.

If you could make $10.00 more an hour somewhere else why have you not put your application in? Term said it best we all must face the reality of whats going on. Whoever stated raises were being made in the outside world, where? who? I drive by many businesses in Painesville and see less cars in the employee's parking lot every week. Time we all face facts. JT. I work as hard for my money as you probable do, I have never jacked up anyone, you arrogant !!! Who's insulting people I think its JT.

"I hope to think a person decided to be a Firefighter, Policeman, Teacher for more than a check."

You get what you pay for. It's economics. Some people love their jobs sure but low pay will certainly keep the people capable of doing a great job as a cop or as a lawyer or something else clammering for the high paying job. People like money. Denying that pay effects the people you get is either naive or intentionally turning a blind eye.

TERM, I was not blaming MP I was asking the readers to find a way to blame it on the City, being sarcastic is all and it was not understood, sorry for the confusion, but seems that all blame often falls on the City. I really wanted to know, if people are complaining about the Cities wages, if their job descriptions match the City workers. If so, how does the pay reflect then? I know private landscapers that make way more money than the guys at parks and recreation and they do the same job. Only the landscapers were no where to be found during the floods, thanks parks and rec. for all the help you gave. Just another example of how keeping people happy results in good things.

"I hope to think a person decided to be a Firefighter, Policeman, Teacher for more than a check. JT. its called reality, that's all." Good quote, so it's fair that an auto worker makes more than a person that will save you or your families life??? That is the basis for my complaint about big industry. The priorities are screwed up in this world. I agree with the gas prices TERM, I personally wish to pay for the people that keep my lights on, bury my family, keep my town clean and safe, then to line the pockets of a fat cat and his $10,000,000 house. Remember these are my opinions only.

KAREN, don't know how to respond. Don't think I insulted anyone here just made MY point as most do and listing some fact to back up my opinions, but calling me arrogant was a nice touch. JT

"You get what you pay for? Not in Painesville its always less!"

Ok obviously have preconceived notions of Painesville and are probably willing to take every chance at insulting someone so I place to weight with your opinion. But in case you just missed the point: If you are looking for a job as a cop you are going to apply with cities that pay more. The only people Painesville can then get are the rejects of the other cities. Therefore, we should pay them more to get better cops.

Ok JT you're have no idea what you are talking about here! As a landscaper in the private industry we were out baling peoples backyards out and on and on. We didn't get overtime and we don't have benefits! We were in the trenches you jerk! I wish I kept count of how many times we are out there working until after dark to get stuff planted due to weather, time constraints, homeowners budgets and our budgets. We keep it lean and mean JT and it's why we are still in business. We have lost no customers for the coming year. The waste of landscaping in this city makes me crazy! Why the hell this city is still planting maples on tree lawns is beyond me and why the city chooses to plant tropical plants on the square in summer is ridiculous.

I walk my dog on the river walk and not only pick up his crap but all the crap left behind by idiots who throw their trash on the ground. and Hey JT I don't get paid for it either. Fisherman are part of the litter problem and I fish but then I urge you to take a walk around the tent city and see the waste & garbage down there. I see the tents have been moved into the woods on the south side of the bridge. But that is ok cause it will flood soon and wash all the crap down to Fairport Harbor.

is there another MP on the list????? because JT I hope it is not me you are referring too as I have stopped posting to this blog unless it is something that affects me and I always sign my name! not hiding behind anonymous.........

Usually when I am insulted in such a fashion I do not respond back as to allow the situation to calm down, BUT. I was in fact using the initials "MP" as the abbreviation for "Mary Poppins", who was posting in this blog. I did not see a reference anywhere to "Mad Potter", sorry you assumed that I was speaking directly to you, even though you were not even posting, but that was a mistake.

As to the landscaper comment I made, not taking it back. BUT, I will re-state what I meant. I am talking about the need to have these people in the City at our beacon call. If you were in the "trenches", then I did not see you there, I was there 12 hours a day for the duration. I will say that if you were assisting "customers" with their flooding issues that would be your responsibility as a business owner to keep that customer and I would assume myself here, could be wrong, that were fee's involved. If not, good business practice. What I was TRYING to say was that the citizens did not have to write a check to have a person pump out their basement or stay at the shelter or for the rides back and forth to the flood zones.

I think you took this way to personal. If anyone here should know what a personal attack is, it is me. Sorry you were offended but I stand by my comments. JT
