"SELECTIVE OR MISINFORMATION?

Alot has been posted about all the misinformation, rumors, ect. on this site.
Today I received my February copy of the "Painesville Pride" newspaper. At the top of page 2 was an article "City receives a grant for Streetscape Project." On November 20,2008 the City of Painesville received a grant for $75,000 from the Governing Board of the Northeastern Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency [NOACA] for the City's Transportation for Livable Communities Streetscape project.
Great, was it important to mention anywhere in the article that for the city to receive the $75,000, Painesville had to pony up with $18,000 of their own money or no grant. Was this selective or misinformation? I will let you decide.
So in reality this is a $93,000 study right?

Your right, this was a great move! Congrats to the city, we got a $93,000 plan for $18,000. I wonder if some other cut rate, cheaper city Administration group could have done this?

Congrats to the city? If they are so proud of this why not tell us the whole story? They spend money on thing at city hall the the average people never know about.
Painesville Pride Painesville Propaganda.

Taking the positive spin on things as usual, but "you have to spend money to make money". What is the big picture anyway here? I think that if the City is to change their image then they need to have better parks and recreation and cleaner looking areas. No one, and I mean NO ONE, will go and spend their money and free time in a dump. Only the people happy living in the dump will do so, and they are not who the City wants to attract. Streetscapes make an inviting entrance to the City and I am for anything that makes this place nicer. Now I don't have the Pride yet, but will, and am curious if it said that it was for a "study" as was referenced, or is ot for the actual project to complete the work? JT

I don't see anyone claiming that the Pride is being objective. Everyone knows their goal. It is even in their name. Maybe this site should just put its goal in the title. "The Painesville Shame"
The Pride is overly positive. This site is overly negative. Do two wrongs make a right?

JT. Read and you will find out its just for the study, what a waste. City Achitecture gets the money for the study, guess it keeps them busy. Why do we have a city planner?

G.E. thanks for letting me know as I have not had the chance to read the Pride yet. Studies are not a waste as they are a needed legal issue. The studies are there to protect people in the long run. They have to take into account water run off from projects, road and sidewalk impact, sight infringements to traffic and many other topics that we as citizens may not know about. Yeah it would be great if the City could just go and plant a bush and hide a meter, but the people that own the meter would file a lawsuit that says that the bush needed to be a variegated leaf plant with a height no higher then 32 inches and diameter of 48.

The studies are done to prevent problems in the long run and to save cost during construction. It is better exampled by doing blue prints of a house before building. Gets a basic understanding of what needs done prior to the build so that it can be done more efficiently. I know the study won't be perfect but the City is a big place and they need to factor many things to get this done so we don't look like Looserville with a stupid group of potted plants from Lowes at the off ramps. Bully for the City. JT

JT. It wasn't if the study was a good idea or not. It was should the article have mentioned the city kicking in $18,000?
Why didn't they?

$93,000 for just another plan good or bad thats real money.

TERM, I responded to G.E. comment by starting it with their initials and I spoke about their comment of "what a waste". I don't think that they are a waste and I do understand what the post was about. I don't think it shady at all to be honest. Yeah the city had to pay some for the grant but the Gov't just figures the percentage that they and you should pay. No matter how you look at it, the tax payers are funding it, one way or the other. Call it selective if you like, I don't think twice about it because I understand that these things have to happen in Gov't to get grants. No worries. Not like they were out there trying to get money to level a historical building and build a land fill. JT

The city writes the articles for the Painesville Pride [believe me I know] The answer is yes there was intent to mislead the public.

Wonder where the plans and studies were for Heisley Park my sump pump never stops, and my neighbors have water in their basement?
Should the article included the $18,000? Yes
Why wasn't it? ASK

"Pride, Shame? What about the TRUTH."

My contention is that you won't find it here nor there. There are always 3 sides to a story.

It won't be "just another plan" if something good comes of it.

"The answer is yes there was intent to mislead the public."

This is a pretty nasty statement. How do you know? Did you overhear the author saying to someone else "I should delete that..."
??
Don't make a baseless accusation. Put some substance to it.

It is always easier to tear down than to build up. Where are your plans? If studies are the underpinning of a new initiative to help the city then what studies do you want done. I just don't see anyone here trying to construct rather than demolish other than JT.

The adminisration never lies, it just doesn't believe in telling you everything. You want answers you want the truth? Then be ready to ask complete questions.

At January 30, 2009 at 1:17 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

The question was never was it a good idea to have the study, the question was the story accurate? It was missing he fact the the city chipped in $18,000. Now there is no by line to the story so we will never know who wrote it, but in all honesty the citys share of the grant should have been included.

IT is always easier to tear down than to build up. What has the city built up in the last 30 years?
Another study on top of a study that hasn't even been approved by council. What about the D.A.R.T. study for downtown, do all the studies you want but every once in a while lets see some bricks and mortar. How about a study to do the financing and to find someone willing to put something besides dreams into downtown.

I knew about this $18,000, Rita told us at the council mtg. when the council voted (all of them voted yes) to approve
the study, and pay the $18,000 to get $75,000 worth of work free (sounds like a good deal to me)
The story in the Pride might not have had all of the facts, but the facts were out there many times.

This happens a lot, it is so hard to remember everything.

It seems to me you could remember the $18,000 if you wanted to.
This happens a lot? Lets hope not.
Thanks for the post it opened my eyes, How many studys do we need before anything is done? What happened to Arby's and BP?

Even JT. at first seemed surprised at the cost with no construction involved. City Architecture just proposed a city plan that cost $85,000 this plus the $93,000 on this study brings the study costs to $178,000 and the DART programs plans are at least $20,000 the city paid for. $200,000 jt. and not even a potted plant, go figure.

I was not surprised, I had not read the article in the Pride and so I was not informed to the totality of the grants limitations. Grants are very specific and if you do not use them for what they are for, then you are penalized. With the new president you can expect to see many studies being done as infrastructure is high on the priorities to building a better USA. I am not taking sides on that debate, I just hope it works out of the better. JT

How many studys have we funded in the last 20 years? What has come out of them? Grants and studys are a good thing if you do something with them.

Still no ideas for positive from the complainers. Only comments about how stuff is bad. I'd rather have people running this city who try to do things or try to come up with ideas. I just couldn't deal with those who complain and live in the past.

Ideas? What new ideas have there been in the last 20 years, we have an admistration always taking the easy way. People who think this city can't survive without them. look how this city is viewed. The armpit of Lake County. People in Leadership who's attitude is my way or the highway.
