"WHAT IS THE PERCEPTION OF PAINESVILLE?"

What is the perception of Painesville, to it's residents and people in the surrounding communities? A poster even suggested that sites like this blog.might keep employers and jobs from Painesville. Does the city having its own utilities bring people to town? Is it enough that we now have five new school buildings. Everyone seems to think that diversity is a plus for Painesville, Are other Painesville services up to par? A community center, senior center, parks and recreation facilitys. What's important to you?

Say whatever you want, this town has the most loyal bunch of "HOMERS" you will ever find.
Either that or they have Stevie Wonder's vision.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE PAINESVILLE THE WAY IT WAS 40 YEARS AGO. WHEN THERE WAS A STORE ON EVERY CORNER AND NO EMPTY STORE FRONTS!11111 WHEN YOU WERE (NOT) AFRAID TO WALK THE STREETS AFTER DARK. BRING BACK THE OLD PAINESVILLE!!!! AND THEN MAYBE, JUST MAYBE WE CAN GET SOME BUSINESSES TO FILL UP THE EMPTY STOREFRONTS. ETHEL

I agree with the poster about this site spreading negatives views of the city. This is the age of the internet, there are many people and companies that use it for research, someone moving to the Lake County area and they search the cities around here, come across this site, first thought would be pick a different city to live in.

All I can say is I'm sure glad most of the negative people are so far outside reality that they really have no clue what is going on in this city. Ultimately people like Term, Karen, etc will be the ones left behind, because the group of positive thinkers is growing and when given a choice most people will follow positive ideas before negative.

Enjoy your blog site, attack anyone you want, most of you have already established how you think negatively, when this city turns around you WILL NOT be given a chance to be part of it.

Most people wanting to locate a new business in a new city would do more then look at a stupid web site. They would check with other businesses in the city, cheap electricity , but look at what you pay in property tax? They would check the schools, nice buildings but why are the test scores so low?
Beautiful town square, but what happens when you drive a quarter of a mile in just about any direction? The College is a wonderful asset, wonder why the city leadership hasn't taken more advantage of it over the years? Whats this new building in town? Oh the County Jail, well its here because of its central location? Here's a big plus, this hospital seems very up to date, what there going to tear it down at the end of the year? and move 5 miles south to the boondocks? Well take me to this "Renaissance Business Park" Richmond St. turn left onto Stage Ave, this road needs a little work , turn left on Lexington [this is a dedicated road] follow to Newell,Newell turn this car around this is crazy, how far are we from Mentor, or Madison. This town WILL NOT be given a chance to be part of our future.

First, its not a bad idea to be a "HOMER" it only gets weird when say, as a Browns fan you tell people Ken Dorsey is a Pro-Bowl quarteback, and if a few calls would have gone our way we would be going to Jacksonville this coming weekend. Loyalty is a good thing but taken to far and you end up believing the Titanic will not sink.

If you care about the state of the city why not do everything you can to help it? If there are legitimate problems sure they can be discussed in the right forum but this site has never presented legitimate problems in an objective way and has certainly never suggested any solutions to those problems to make the city better.

"I WOULD LIKE TO SEE PAINESVILLE THE WAY IT WAS 40 YEARS AGO."

Sometimes its better to live your life in the present rather than the past. The entire world is not what it was 40 years ago so you probably shouldn't make this your standard for what Paiensville should be now. You have to work in the now. You can throw on your old leisure suit, sit in your rocking chair on your front porch and pretend it is 40 years ago and complain that things are different.

I am sure a most posters, especially on this site, will post that they have a bad perception of Painesville. We will have another huge discussion about how bad Painesville is and continue the mantra of this site. However, wouldn't it be PRODUCTIVE (I know it seems like a foreign language) to say what we would like to see happen and maybe even suggest ways that the city can achieve those goals. This site has never been a hot bed for ideas of how to make a positive change but why can't this be the start of a new era for this site?

This site is the problem? Listen I've heard the same song and dance for over 25 years. Were going to turn this city around, and to be honest that hasn't happened, yet we leave the same people in charge.
How long will this turn around take until Joe, Joe, Rita, Abbey, Paul, and Robert retire. Please face the facts. Were not going anywhere fast.

Wish they would show the meetings at the library but really feel since the TV channels are gone we are kind of out of the loop and You know I think that is a good thing.
We too have lived here over 25 years and have been waiting and waiting and don't see very much change for the better....... via the city.

I let the 80% post up because from paperwork and conversations I have been told 67 out of 317 city employees reside in town.I can understand why someone who works for the city would not want to live outside of the city, but I also see the points why people would want employees to live in Painesville. Jobs like Assistant City Manager should require the person to live in town, Now all department heads should be no more than 15 minutes freom city hall. Now the school superintendant should live in the dis... no! I've been down this road before

If you think it would be a change for the better who would you like to see get elected and what do they propose to do?
Does anyone have a plan?
Change like voting in people like Hal or Arlene?
The question seems to linger, Who has a plan and what is it?

What do I believe? i believe in the positive attack and not the negative. I think that a good business will research and look into everything. I know that some even send people into the areas they plan to open up in and ask neighbors what they think of the areas. They look at crime, utilities, services, location location location. To be honest Painesville does not have a great off the highway spot here. If we were some stop along a major freeway between two bustling burgs I could see a difference. So does Painesville have it easy? NO! They have to try and have mom and pop type of stores and businesses in a world of Super Walmart and Kmarts. Does everyone here go to Joughins or do you drive to Lowes to save three cents. Until people change the way that they intend on living their lives then nothing will change.

And to be frank, all the negative talk would keep anyone away that found it and decided to head all the warnings. Back to what I have always said, be positive. JT

JT. are you saying we should avoid the truth and just tell lies?

At January 27, 2009 at 10:16 AM , Blogger Big John said...

I will answer both questions in one post.

1. Read it again...I said 3 cents, I will go no further here as my point has been made about misrepresenting facts.

2. Did I say "avoid the truth", no, I said that Painesville has a tough time as it is with the location and we need to capitalize on our locals not wanting to go far to get their needs. That is tough when there is so much negative press to get people to drive a bit east instead of west. What I hope for is all of the good ideas I see here being used in a positive way to make a difference. One positive aspect that I see almost daily, the number of Riverside and Mentor T-shirts in the Painesville YMCA.

If all anyone wants is a crabbing board, then you got it. Do you truly believe anything will change if you crab about it? Do I really need to answer that?? JT

"And to be frank, all the negative talk would keep anyone away that found it and decided to head all the warnings. Back to what I have always said, be positive. JT"

I second this.

"JT. are you saying we should avoid the truth and just tell lies?"

Who is telling lies? Please cite them? You are accusing people of something here. Explain yourself. What constitutes a lie? Does posting a bunch of quotes about how the city caused the power outage and how we have bad power service constitute a lie? Maybe it should be.

Lastly, whomever enters the race, I think this site should be a little better than just spewing insults. If you think someone is elitist then explain why. I see this gettign out of hand and the posters here never explain anything. They just toss out a nasty word and hope that the word gets associated with that person. I am of the opinion that Dennis, Millie, or whomever else runs is a good person until I get information to the contrary. Simply the word "Elitist" is NOT information. Put together a good post or don't post at all because you are just hurting the site.

At January 27, 2009 at 12:59 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I guess it is OK to call Millie and dennis "wannaes" (I'm assuming they meant "wannabes". but don't call Debra an elitist. I get it. No name calling for people you support, but go ahead for others. I see.

Joughins is a big plus for Painesville, why else shop Downtown? More expensive? Yes. but they always have what I need. Higher priced? but maybe they sell "SERVICE" and "KNOWLEDGE."

At January 28, 2009 at 6:08 AM , Blogger Big John said...

TERM I agree with you completely. That is the basis of what I generally talk about. Sure Joughins is a bit more expensive, but I factor in the cost of my time and wear and tear on the veh. to get there. Yes they always have everything, and they know what they are talking about. I made the reference of 3 cents in my original post prior to it being mis-quoted, and that was a specific reference to something I priced out, so lie was strong, I know you did not post that, just reiterating here.

Local patronage will be the salvation and if folks feel unsafe about coming here I think that they will go elsewhere. The criminal element also does not want tons of good people that are willing to fight them either. So bring in the good people and the bad people will go where they are accepted. JT

At January 28, 2009 at 6:26 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ok so the poster above did not call Dennis or Millie "wannabes" They said that is reference to whomever else was running. I don't agree calling either person or anyone a wannabe because it has the negative connotation. Maybe a "council hopeful" would be more appropriate. Either way the question pertaining to qualifications was never answered. Also there has never been an explaination for why someone was considered an elitist and the seemingly baseless accusation still stands. If it has a base please provide it.

Term, you are right Joughins has the best service of any place I have ever been to.

I believe to run for council at large you must be of legal voting age, live in Painesville, and an American citizen, what else?
This coming election is going to be very expensive for someone to keep or get a seat on council. Probably a years salary that council pays. I would like to know what everyones ideas are to make Painesville a better place to live, but that plate was broken in the last election, Thank-you Mr. Fountain. This time we will hear alot more negative things than in the past will that make us a better place?

I don't get it. But if there was some problem, he is not running this time.
I would encourage people to run on their own attributes.

"This time we will hear alot more negative things than in the past will that make us a better place?"

If this site is any indication of what is to come, I would expect the election to be full negativity. Please to keep it positive people.

I would suggest people would respond best to ideas of ways to make the city better. I know I would
