"THE LAST 20 YEARS'

To alot of you who think everything is Grand in Painesville. Help me out here can you tell me somethimgs the City has done in the last 20 years to improve the quality of life in town? I believe the biggest was the construction of all the new schools, but thats the Board of Education. What about City Hall?

buildings do not make a great school system. the same problems exist, they just cost more now.

They have built a very good City services division. All departments have grown right along with the City and seem to do a good job. With the lowest electric rates around I might add.

City wide beautification. The parks and open areas are very nice.

Overall image of the City is better.

Getting in more industry and housing options.

Expanded the City square millage to provide more room for expansion.

Provides many more functions for the residents to get involved in all year long, ie...winter carnivals and Halloween activities, City open houses, photography contest, cruise inns, and so on.

Downtown Painesville district rehab and interest. Or did no one else see the over two hundred cars parked along S. Park, N. Park, Main St. and the p-lot of Job and Family services last night? They were not getting county services at 8pm, they were spending money and time here.

Any work they did to sweeten deal for Lake Erie College to make a stand here in the Ville.

Taking the reigns after the flood and hopefully turning the area into a gem of a park setting with many more things to do here.

Worked with small business to make a more attractive setting to set up shop.

Enacted several ordinances and programs, like Crime Free Multi Housing, for nuisance conditions like crime ridden bars and locations to help with the problems, note I did not say solve, some things are not full proof, but it does make things better.

Even in the face of doubters, still stood true to their beliefs of how to make the City better and stayed the course regardless of the attacks.

Now remember folks the post was for things that the City has done to "improve the quality of life". Let the onslaught of negative begin... JT

Terminator,as a novice businessman in town, my belief is that the city is not responsible for alot of things. But the city should not get in the way of progress or businesses by overtaxation, burdensome ordinances and requirements. basically treat them good or they will go elsewhere.

entrepreneurship is on the rise in this town. what down town we have is being restored and cleaned up. examples: joughins hardware and "museum." Mr. Smith keeps his buildings in a-1 shape. jimmy's restraunt and the sidewalk cafe. the downtown committee, pcic and the painesville area chamber of commerce are putting alot of time in town, alot of it volunteer.

i can recall riding around this town in december of 1986. then it was a real dump. w. erie st. was a disaster. nothing there. e. erie was not much better. falling down houses on richmond st. i could go on and on. i remember when rec park was the biggest "pharmacy" in lake county-look at it now

we have some nice new housing developments and that is what this town needs-single family homes. no new apartments.

we have had alot of new businesses in the last 20 years. we have the va clinic here now. college on the rebound. annexed various land. ripped down alot of dillapidated houses.

this town will never be painesville in the 50's. change is inevitable and sometimes it can be good. nothing will come cheap. i have learned you have to spend money to make money.

i am not sure what the city has had to do with any of this. government has to cooperate with private business or things won't happen. the city has spent some money on plans and gotten some grants.

now the private businesses will have to step up to the plate. some of us are looking forward to it.

Maddog JT. good comments, I have to say for the betterment of all Painesville the one thing that has brought the most to Painesville in the last 20 years is Renaissance Business District. Forget Liberty Greens, Heisley Park, Diamond Center the money maker is Renaissance. The others might even cost more than what the city brings in in taxes. Diamond Center is becoming an apartment complex before our eyes. Thank the business that have decided to locate here.

I agree with you TERM. The City did a great job getting that in there and making it profitable. I would say however that the other places that you mentioned should be considered as the jewels around the big stone. If there are no viable housing options for the people that are making money then why would they want to live where they work. I think in the long run, the housing, schools and business is going to be a big part in the success of Painesville as a whole. We do not have the luxury of having a thoroughfare type town where you jump off a major freeway or turnpike and patronize the stores and get back on. We need to draw from the locals and surrounding locals that say it is not worth the long trip somewhere else to do what they have to do. We have to be convenient and friendly to those people and have a serious draw. JT

Help me here? How have any of the things mentioned improved the quality of life in Painesville? Crime in Painesville is the highest in the county, less things for our young and old people to do, less places to shop. JT Term you should know better!

If your looking for physical things like a water park, rec center, community center, senior center, your priorities must be mixed up.

KAREN, for once I agree with you. Yes, priorities are mixed up when people expect the leadership to do everything for the town and they have to do nothing. I have an idea for the person that claimed that there is not enough to do in the City for the young and elderly. Do something about it and stop your whining if you feel so strongly. I have two kids and have found many more things to do here in recent years than in the past. i walked through the senior center on Valentines day and it was packed. I bet there were over a hundred seniors in there having a ball! So get off your rump and make a difference or at least be willing to see that the City does well by it's citizens from time to time.
