I don't think there were car dealers there, I think that was where the Fire Dept. was ?

I believe the old fire station was further south. close to the alley. I will get the addresses to be sure.

I thought the centerfold would be the hard one to get? This is what they must mean by selective memory.
I also didn't post girls names that weren't the centerfold.
Maddog you have some explaining to do.

This post was GREAT. As I was not born and raised in Ohio, especially Painesville, the questions/answers were enlighting.

Thanks.

in the late 50's early 60's there was a poultry butchering shop there. Chickens were dressed and sold from there.

Sitting Bull Frog? was that the bar in the house on State St. in the late 60's between Educational Supply and Main St.?
50 years ago Painesville had two Railroad Stations the one still on Railroad St. Where was the other one located?
Western Union corner of S. St. Clair and Washington St.?
What was on the nothwest corner of Washington and Liberty St.

The poultry market was right in the area where the old hotel is, only I think it was a little closer to the street. But right there on the hill.
One of the porn stores was a couple of doors down from Toyland, was that Painesville News? It was run by Kenny Q.

The other railroad station was on S.State St. between the tracks and D'Abates Market it was the Nickel Plate Railroads station.
I beleive there was a Baptist Church on that corner ,the building went right up to the sidewalk.

I thought the name of that bar on State St wasn't the Sitting Bull Frog but the TRIP. might be wrong

The sitting Bullfrog was located on the second floor above where Jackson-Hewitt (tax service) is now.

The bar across the street was called Maude's.
(the old Vogue Lounge)
Where was the Vogue
located before there?

The Trip was a small boutique (head-shop) located on the southwest corner of the alley behind where Toyland used to be.

The News-stand a couple of doors down from Toyland was called the Town Crier,

Kenny Q's Painesville News was located between St.Clair and the Park on the South side.

What was the first name of the first club that moved into the old Lake Theatre?

What did the Cleveland Press newspaper nickname South State Street between Main Street and Washington Street?

What was the name of the record shop on the Eastside of South State Street? (across from Maude's)

What was the name of the Indian trading store located where Jackson-Hewitt is now?

Have fun - from an old Hippie V

Lake Theatre was the Agora, then Urban Cowboy?
Press called it the Haight-Ashbery of northeast Ohio?
Maudes just a large house turned into a bar.
HippieV dont go away I dont think there are to many people around to get these.

The other jewelry store was Richards.
There is an empty lot were Home Restaurant was.
Porn Shops were a little different back in the 60s no Vhs, no DVDs, just magazines that were sold with other print magazines, paperbacks, and out of town newspapers, one row marked you must be 18 to enter. not quite what you think of todays porn shops.

Wasn't the Vogue on S.St. Clair across from Bitzers and had a black facing with Vogue Lounge in red , It caught fire in the sixtys it was also located next to the Western Union Store at that time.

At February 7, 2009 at 9:41 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

No the first club to move it to the old Lake Theatre was called "The Palace"
Does anyone remember opening night, all of the people from out of town showed up, man the Fuzz (ha,ha) had a great time, they were busting everyone, I heard stories were they would take Painesville people, out of downtown and let them go, "cool cops"

The press called S.State Street, "Creep Street", around that time.

Yes that was where the Vogue was, but it was not north of the Western Union Office on south St.Clair St. that was the Brass Rail.

Where was, the locations of the Skillet ?

And to answer the question about the locations of the Western Union Offices

First one was in the west side of the Senior Citizens Center, on the East side was Sears Dept.
store.

Then at 77 N.St Clair St.

When they closed up most Western Union Offices, in the 70s in 1972 they put it in Jerry Naylor's Printing Co. on Courtland St.
What other work did the Naylor's do there ?

What was the name of the Heating Co. on Courtland St ?

Did you know when you give the peace sign with your hand and fingers, it started out as V for victory, I belive in the second world War ?

I think you meant the Western Auto Store. The skillet was next to the hardware store on State St.
Does anyone know where Dutch's Garage and GMC Truck dealership was?

At February 7, 2009 at 8:20 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Western Auto was on the south side of Main St. between State and St.Clair

The Skillet was not on State St. it was in two locations on St.Clair St.
Name them.

Phillibars was the paint store
Horvaths Bar.
Thayer, Gray, Rexall.

The bar north of Jughead Hardware was the L&D or the Low & Dirty.
(good place for a Fight)
We were leaving the Lake Theatre, after watching WOODSTOCK, going accross the street to the Home Restraunt, when the big barmaid put the little barmaid thru the plate glass window of the L&D Bar, right in front of me and my buddies, the fight kept going on out on the sidewalk, what a great night for us teen boys, when the tops started to get ripped off!
