"HOOWDY PARTNER"

This is a reprint of Fridays 02/20/09 Editorial

PAINESVILLE NEEDS PARTNERS FOR PLAN

Big changes are coming to Painesville.
Three developments caused city planners to approve a master plan that will evolve over the next 10 to 15 years.
Lake Hospital System's closure of LakeEast Hospital at 10 E. Washington St. LHS will open TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township this fall.
Painesville School District has opened new schools and constructing others, including a Harvey High School which will vacate its building at 167 W.Washington St. after the school year.
The private Lake Erie College, 391 W. Washington St.has experienced impressive growth in enrollment, and there are some off-campus sites.
City leaders wnvision Lake Erie College students walking through parks to get to downtown Painesville. Meanwhile, residents neighborhoods will rise where Harvey and the hospital currently stand.
While the city will need money to demolish some buildings, the plan officials have laid out our feasible.
We commend them for not wringing their hands amid signification changes. They're taken the initiative to ask what Painesville should do next.
It will take more than just city government's involvement, however. Lake Erie College has ambitious leaders who will make willing partners to improve the city.
Other groups must step forward to help boost Painesville for the years to come.
I ASK

Painesville needs to find a rich uncle or a Sugerdaddy to make some of these plans reality. Is the present administration good enough salesmen to sell this vision?
What was meant Painesville must find the money to demolish buildings? Do we demolish something if nothing is being built there?
What about the present economy?

Big shocker here, I think that the Administration is good enough. All of the "Positive" comments that you posted about the way the City has changed are proof that they are capable of doing this thing. Please don't forget about the recent economic stimulus for these exact type of things. I have heard that he stimulus will go to cities and town that have a current battle plan that is workable within six months. In other words the people that get the money from the government must be able to act quickly and have a plan already in place to improve there areas. The money will not go to areas that have no plan for major changes. I have also heard that the administration is well aware of this and looking into that option. So for me I sit here and wait and hope that the downtown plan goes well. I live here and am planning on possibly living in the new area upon it's completion. Very exciting. JT

JT. the city has asked for $19.1 million from the stimulus package, the most of anyone in Lake County. People that do the math tell me Lake County may only get $20 million for the whole county, if this is true and say Painesville City gets 2 to 3 million, what should that money be used for? Would you be happy if the city took their 2 million to tear down the hospital? Even if no developer is willing to make the investment? You know my feeling on the hospital property, Painesville should stay out of it. So what better use of that money could there be? Why did the paper even bring up demolishing buildings.

Term, JT. You two better start watching other thing happening in town. First layoffs coming to Fasson.Coe, and Airfoil. Do you realize HomesteadI and HomesteadII are getting ready to build a new facility in Concord and will close the ones in town. I only hope that new fire truck has enough rope for all of us. Rita fiddled while Painesville burned.

Term.
Painesville cant stay out of it, the hospital belongs to us we have to do something with it, and the best thing to do is take it down and try to rebuild the area with something we can use.
And Karen you are so full of it about Homestead, if you were in the loop, you would know they are not going thru with it.

Didn't read this in the News Herald.

Company That Owns 3 Local Newspapers Files For Bankruptcy

Journal Register Co. Blames Slumping Ad Revenue, Circulation

PHILADELPHIA -- The Journal Register Co. filed Saturday for Chapter 11 protection from its creditors and said slumping advertising revenue and circulation are to blame.
In court documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan, company Chairman and Chief Executive James W. Hall said the recession had placed an even greater burden on an already distressed industry.
The Yardley, Pa.-based newspaper publisher reported $596 million in assets as of Nov. 30 and $692 million in debt, including unpaid interest. Revenue has fallen more than 20 percent since 2006, the company said in the court filing.
In the Chapter 11 filing, Journal Register has proposed a restructuring plan in which it would cancel its stock — which traded for less than one cent on Friday — and become a closely held company controlled by its lenders.
Journal Register Co. owns 20 daily and 159 non-daily newspapers and has about 3,500 employees.
In its filing, Journal Register said it serves greater Philadelphia, Michigan, Connecticut, the greater Cleveland area and parts of New York state. Its newspapers include the Hartford Courant in Connecticut, a number of suburban Philadelphia newspapers and the Trentonian near Philadelphia.
The News Herald in Lake County, the Lorain Morning Journal and El Latino Express in Lorain are newspapers owned by the Journal Register.
The company's stock, which traded as high as $23.87 a decade ago, was removed from the listings of the New York Stock Exchange in April.

What does this mean for Lake County?

The News-Herald stopped being a newspaper 20 years ago. Its a P.R. front for anyone who pays for advertisement. LHS you will never see anything negative about them. David Jones even did a column about the JEDD and even the facts were wrong. Why?

That was in the News Herald, and who cares about the News Herald, they are hurting because they cater only to a certain "elite" group of good ole boys.

TERM, to get back on track here, I am not really sure of what the money should be spent on to be honest. I have poured over the downtown plans and think that they are good. As far as cost goes, I know it will be a pretty penny and they need an investor for sure. If it turns out that they get the 2 or 3 million, I would suggest that they do demolish what needs done and make the area ready for the job. Do I like that idea totally, no, but what else would they do. Some complain about the roads, but it is winter and what do you expect right now, lets look at that when the snow melts. As for now, I think that if the City takes as active approach to the renovation projects then in the long run things will get better. I think dead and empty buildings look like road blocks and are have many problems of their own, so I say tear them down and make the sites ready. Someone will have the vision and the desire to make a stake. If I had the money I would consider it and look at this place as an opportunity. JT

This idea was tried about 45 years ago, it didn't work than and will fail again. First off the County or LHS should tear it down with there money and give Painesville a clean piece of land [we haven't collected a penny in property tax there for over 100 years] Then Painesville would have 2 or 3 million dollars in seed money to bring an investor in. The County and LHS are taking us for a ride, and anyone who would take stimulus money to tear down that building should have their head examined.

"anyone who would take stimulus money to tear down that building should have their head examined."

Why? That money is only useful for limited purposes. It is probably is restricted from being used as "seed money" or whatever you are dreaming up. Anyone who would advocate NOT taking federal money in a situation like this... well I think we can skip the examination...

Yes, lets use this money as a favor to the ones that stuck it to us when they left town. Of all the positive things Painesville needs to do, this is your idea of a good idea? Who is going to develop that property? That White Elephant belongs to the county and Lake Hospital not us. Who in there right mind wants to live across the street from a parking garage, storage center and public housing.
More than your head needs examined.
Why don't you build housing along the river, Oh yes, who approved of that project'

mary, mary, mary, you lean mean landscaping machine, pull yourself out of the trenches for a moment.

are you suggesting we just do nothing and leave that building stand vacant? maybe you could make it look pretty, work till dark and plant some nice bushes around it while we wait for a miracle to turn in into something nice. get on with life, the hospital is going. develop the site, fix up downtown, leave the naysayers in the dust.

thanks for cleaning up down by the river

The miracle will be anybody building housing on that site. Your condo thats just where the morgue was, The X-ray department was where my home is now, Yes, there seems to be some loud noises from the garage , but you'll get use to it.

Have my head examined? For posting to your question and only stating my opinions? Well clearly ideas are not welcome and only the beliefs of a certain crowd are allowed here but I will not go away. I think that no matter how you ask, LHS is NEVER going to pony up here. I for one am glad that the City is at least looking into other options. So what if the hospital did something you don't like. Let me ask you this, not aiming at anyone specific here. Why are you not running the hospital then since your ideas are so clearly superior from the rest of the business world. LHS made a decision best for them, and yes some are getting hurt by it, but anonymous two up said it best, Get over it. Time to move on here I think. The money should be used here for the big projects, tell me I am wrong 100 other ways and I will suggest 101 reasons why I my opinion is still mine. JT
