" GO ALL THE WAY " raspberries

I was cruel and mean I had a hole in the place where my heart should have been

Well it appears next week I will be back in school at Heritage Middle School. Both Superintendent Shepard and Principal  DeAngelis have invited me to Heritage Middle School.

Now lately I have been quite harsh on the antics of what goes on in that school. Before making my statement at city council looking back I should have addressed the administration first. My only excuse was that I believed they were well aware of the situation.

First off let me tell you what I have learned so far about an SRO officer in that building. Is he there one day a week? Two days? How is this decided?

Well according to the Painesville Police Chief there's a sign-up sheet? So any patrolman who is free on a certain day can sign the sheet to work at Heritage that day?  No one signs the sheet? Sorry folks your on your own.

So if something really bad happens on a day with no SRO officer  when asked, the people in charge will claim no one signed up that day?

I followed an SRO officer at Harvey for a week he explained the special instructions and training he had taken. How to respond to certain situation's and how to deal with young adults one on one. No surprises here. These are  the officers responsibilities in the school and here are yours. Over time the SRO officer gains the confidence and respect  of the students and they know he's a straight shooter, plays no favorites and his purpose in that building is to provide a safe learning environment for not only student's but also teacher's.

Now I ask what is the level of training is there for the officers that sign the sign up sheet?

Doesn't it make sense that the same officer is at the school everyday. The officer learns the students and they learn him or her.

When you have the same officer very quickly that officer knows who's a loud mouth and who might be a legitimate threat. Who's a jokester and who would steal the sugar out of a cake. You don't learn that once a week or every so often.

So what do I want?

I want a dedicated officer who's job is being an SRO officer at Heritage. Not a hit or miss listing.

I want order and a safe learning experience for those students.

I also want students to watch an officer preform his duties and know his # 1 priority is their safety.

From the sixth grade through the twelfth I want them to watch and learn. Who knows just maybe everyone will understand and respect the job a police officer does.

I have heard many people tell me they want Painesville to regain it's past stature. Well the school system is where you start.

You make some valid observations, but the reality question sets in - who is going to Pay? This issue goes back to the Hanlin administration. The appropriate question to the Chief and the finance director is whether the SRO costs are appropriately passed on to the school district or just another hole in the general fund. These are murky waters indeed, who is responsible for the accounting? Officers sign up for many outside 'jobs' and then the costs billed, McDonalds, etc.

Just thought I would ask, hopefully the answer is not shrugged shoulders.

9:38 I am presently under the belief that the sign up officer is being paid by the school system. The two officers should always answer to the Painesville Chief. Costs should be split if for no other reason both administrations can afford to protect the community students. It might even save the city money from running down to the schools. With the salaries I have seen at the BOE and the money spent on fake brick sidewalks there seems presently enough money to fund both officers.
Dr. Hanlon objection to paying seems that he wanted control of the officer?
When your handing out 4% raises the school administration has little to claim poor mouth?

Are you prepared to pass a police levy to cover it? After hearing where levy money goes, I am not. These kids are their parents responsibility. Get a few to get off the couch and spend the day with their kid, the behavior may slow down. Who wants to be made an example of by having their parent sit with them all day. They may re-think their behavior knowing a second round of parent visits could happen.

3:26 Sorry not good enough. Under your theory we don't need law enforcement only everyone's parents following their children until they pass on.
The concern is not who's on a couch, it's about who's in our school buildings for the safety and learning environment for all of our student's. The money's there and we have a shared responsibility to provide these two SRO officers. Find the money, first if you can fund an I. Tech at $80,000 (schools) and meter readers driving around in $50,000 Ford Explorers you can easily find the money!

Where did I say we dont need law enforcement? I didnt. 1.Are you prepared to pass a ppd levy? 2.And IF these parents were made to take responsibility for their children, (a little interuption in their daily routine wont hurt will it) there is a chance for small changes. IF one gets in trouble in school AND a parent must spend the day, in every class side by side. Said child may not act out or said child does and parent sees what the school is really dealing with. It MAY detour future actions should the child be embarrased or afraid of their parent may have to come back a second time. I know if I got in trouble and my parent had to take time from work or their day to see my behavior, I would learn my lesson. Just as a Judge Cicconetti type of consequence.

Arent the hall monitors doing their job? Behavior shouldn't be out of hand in the building if they were? Walking home, off school property then is a police matter?

Where are the hall monitors to take care of in school problems? Hiding, sleeping?
What kind of sign up for this extra school duty is this, volunteer or paid? As much as you are pushing for this it sounds like you have someone you want for the job and would like to give them this job. Did the schools come to the city to ask for help? Did they come to you for your opinion? Maybe some kid picked your flowers and now the schools need cop?

Any time someone like you wants to visit, the state or any squeaky wheel the warnings go out to be on best behavior, don't talk unless spoken to, offer nothing especially opinions - it's called a gag order. You should come by unannounced to do your snoop and poop. Bet things would be different?

Hall monitor or Cop?

The crimmialzation of education is a dumb idea.

I hated seeing police at my kids' school and my attorney wife has told my kids. "never make a statement to police"

Also, Lake Juvinile court has been quietly grumbling about all the silly crimminal referals that used to be handled informally.

Less Cops, More Teachers!

Sorry a criminal act is an act whether in a School or a Mall.

And you believe the rest of us do? The world has changed gone are the days of Britt, Moore, Lutheran and serving as backup but never needed Knuth and Gatti. Those days are gone and in reality students are more emboldened.
Probable by defense lawyers?

I guess Juvenile Court have what to do? They don't want to be troubled by assaults, fights sex offences happening in schools? Wonder if parents in Chardon would agree with you?

As far as your wife she can dole out all the legal opinion she wants.

Teachers teach not enforce laws.
