"IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS" puff daddy

Tryin to get my hands on some grants like Horace

There are many times I believe the bureaucracy of a city or school system  is well set-up for the system. Residents as well as students are just used as props in the operation.

Take Painesville City Schools we operate with a Superintendent making north of $125,000. an Assistant Superintendent with a salary of  $104,197

Now comes the whaaat?

Director of Teaching and Learning               $80,802

Director of Business and Personnel               $89.449

Director ELD Services                                   $87,015

Special Education Supervisor                         $65,000

Director, Special                                             $98,014

Administrative Secretary                                $39,274

Ex. Emp. Asst.  Treasurer                               $70,414

Accounting Clerk/Grants                                $38,723

Ex. Secretary to Superintendent                      $46,238

Ex. Emp. Secretary to Business Mgr.              $39,274

Food Service Director                                       $55,032

Communication Director                                   $42,286

Ex. Emp. Tech Coordinator                               $81,049

Ex.Emp. Communication Director                     $43,863

These people all are positioned at the BOE

Now I have left off administration staff such as Principals only because the are on the front lines.

Educating students.

So the next time you hear 'It's for the Kids" remember this short list and who it's really for.

The whole system has a pecking order from Bus Drivers to Janitorial staff.

Seems our President has changed the name of Mt. McKinley named after Ohioan President William McKinley to a high priced GMC  pick-up truck called the Denali?

While I am amazed at the amount of dead wood and redundancy on Jackson St, it was worse when I used to go to the BOE in Cleveland. There were so many people that they could barely get by one another. Constantly running into each other.

This is what happens when administrators think that court decisions give them the right to hire their friends and use them to run their kingdom. The real issue is that they never go away and we can't get rid of them.

Could someone get a job description for these positions so we would learn what they are supposed to do for their pay check?

Russ Hobart should have had so many underlings!

Please take into account paid vacations, all benefits etc on top of the base salary. It's an eye opener.

Can you explain why we have two communication directors? Is this a misprint?

Truthfully there seems to little communication going on.

Please take into account that it's 2015 and what other school districts pay. While you may not like it the pay is probably below average in the industry.

Also, Denali is the original native name before the US bought the area from Russia - History buffs who's "folly" was it? McKinley as stated never in Alaska. I think we should rename Little Mountain Mt. McKinley.

3:44 So I'm getting a bargain? If you are correct everyone is abusing the system?

Thanks for the heads up about Denali would have never known???? Stewards Folly? Seems like we have more than one folly when it comes to education.?

Yes, I am a PCLS employee, and I can tell you that we have one of the lowest amount of administrators per student in the state...and I am just a teacher..I'd encourage anyone to go to the BOE, and you would see they do Moore then you think. Just like teaching, it's not the same as when you were there..not necessarily better, but not the same...

3:06 Maybe you do. But really are all these positions needed? I guess I'm old school.

Along with what results can be found?

Why would an administrator get a 4% raise and a teacher 2% just asking.

I guess I'm looking for justification.

You are a PCLS employee and you write this?
"they do Moore then you think"
Maybe it should read "they do more than you think"?
You are a teacher??

All I am asking is why we have so many chiefs (and well paid at that) who don't enhance the education the children get.
Two directors for communication (whatever that is)??
"Director Specia"l?? What is that?
The Director of Business gets a Secretary but the Asst Superintendent does not?
What is a "Ex. Emp. Tech Coordinator "??
Some degree of administration is needed, of course, but this is beyond comprehension.

I would also have to ask where you get the info that our administration is one of the lowest paid per student in the state.
Is that information coming from the Administration, because they would be so truthful about it?
My brother taught in SE Ohio and I can absolutely state that Painesville teachers and administration make more money.
This is like true of most any school district in the southeast part of Ohio.
The districts are poor and people teach there because they want to. It certainly is not for the check.

For all this money spent in the schools, why are the results so disappointing?
Money doesn't cure all the ills of the schools but adding more money doesn't seem to work at all.

I would say, that there are many people at the BOE who wear more than one hat, no matter what their job title is...also, sorry about the use of the word "Moore" in my post, it was that autocorrect...

3:44 I guess the question most ask is what has been accomplished to deserve a raise? You landing on our little area of this planet? This school system is a perfect example Term makes of great frosting forgot how to bake the cake. Me I'm getting out and if you have a child at Heritage get them out of that unsupervised Hellhole. If anyplace in Painesville needed a cop it's that school. They either don't know there's a problem or it's a great cover up> You want to talk about gangs .

Another question is what we spend to educate each student. Last time I looked we invested more in our students than any other student in Lake county yet we have some of the poorest grades. How is that possible and it's not new math. This community has long supported the schools and we have little to show for our investment and I don't see it getting any better. It's called dollar value.

I wonder of the above list how many reside in Painesville? Say what you will it seems like a waste of tax dollars.

625, if you read my post carefully, I did not say they were one of the lowest paid per student, I said they had one of the lowest amount of administrators per student in the state, totally different thing...also the assistant super and another position share a secretary...as for Heritage, there is a cop there at least one day a week, and it should be more....

Also, both the Super and Asst both live in the city, and the Asst has 3 kids in the schools, not like the last regime. The secretary for the super lives in the city, and all her kids went to PCLS, the building manager's secretary has 2 kids in the system, the accounts payable..clerk has a daughter go through, the IT director lived in Painesville and had 2 kids go through...so it's more than you think...that's what I can remember off the top of my head....

You also have to take into account where many of our students come from...we are not like many of the neighboring districts around us, where education is a priority, and children are expected to be successful. It has become an adversarial relationship at times when you have to call home. I for one am grateful for the support of the community, but it seems like many do not care. The ones that do, their children seem to do well. It is indeed a difficult job when your efforts are not being reinforced at home. I have taught there for a long time, and it's hard to fight a battle when students and their parents do not care....bet you didn't know that our cafeteria produced over 10,000 meals over the summer for students who did not have access to regular meals. Many of our students have breakfast and lunch at school, and that is the only sure meal that they get...just another hurdle our students have to climb. I'm not making excuses, I'm simply illuminating some of the variables we deal with on a daily basis. We have the Raider Rack because even though we have uniforms,
parents do not make sure their students come to school with clean clothes, so we give them some that they can wear while we wash them. School is not what it was 20 years ago, or maybe when you went there....I can assure you that the teachers are working very hard to do as much as they can....no one in my building is happy with our scores, and we always working hard to try to improve them.

I love where I work, and am always trying to improve each day with my students. I appreciate the support from the community, I just wish more would come out and support their children in any way. If you do, I support you, applaud you, and thank you...

Your missing a big new job added recently at the good old BOE- director of testing for 90 grand a year. Also the executive secretaries make more than a lot of the teachers, the don't put them in the union so they can pay them higher than the pay scale. They have do many new positions under this new leadership there is not enough room. There is even a new assistant to the PR person, lol

The middle school? Yes it's out of control. What do you expect when they move 1/2 of the old Kim Martin team over to RUN a building? Just after the high school is beginning to resemble a "normal" high school, where kids actually go to class, now we have chaos and cover up at the middle school, but the principal is buddies with the new Sup so.....

Class size is a problem- classes are overcrowded could use more teachers, but then how could we pay those guys at the BOE those high salaries?

Elementary buildings? Don't even get me started, those principals have too much on their plates, but how can we hire them maybe an assistant or two to help out between the buildings that actually deal with children and parents and teachers when the BOE is busy hiring assistants to the assistants?

This is not a well run district, but it's ok right! It's ok because the heads of the district reside in the city- they keep telling us they live here too.

These last two comments leave me wondering. I really believe 5:27 cares and with that I have to question do we spend our money on more like them? Or is it wise and prudent to spend $90,000 on a director of testing? Seems our Education Army has more generals and staff than front line troops?
An SRO officer at Heritage one day a week? What happens on the other four days? I do know the school is out of control, and we presently are playing the game where you pass around a bomb just waiting for the explosion.

The district has added teaching staff in each of the last several years to deal with increasing class sizes due to increasing enrollment. There is no "director of testing". There has only been one central administrative position added, in addition to an overlap in the communications position to train a replacement (the value of which is debatable). This new position was added only after the salary of the position formerly held by Bull was substantially reduced. The executive secretaries make more than none of the teachers. The food service and transportation directors are shared among multiple districts for cost saving, so the district pays only a portion of those salaries.

With any public organization, you can always debate whether or not there is too much bureaucracy and administrative cost. It is a fair debate--provided that you at least have the information correct.

It was my understanding there was to be a grant to provide an SRO at the middle school, guess that fell through. 5:27 hit the nail on the head, a new vice principal and an SRO can't override the principal. Principals are the BOSS, never forget it and they don't let you forget either. You should do a check on how many certified versus classified employees live in Painesville. I know many and most classified are Painesville residents. They are the lowest paid of all (refer to ourselves as peons when in a closed group), and work VERY hard and most are NOT respected by teachers and building administration NO MATTER WHAT THEY TELL YOU. We all put up a good false-front M-F for everyone but if you knew the truth, it would shock you.

I guess with two people now doing this job it's too difficult to make the rounds to the buildings and get stories, make them come to you.

PCLS Teachers,

Throughout the year you may create instructional lessons that show your students and class off in such a unique or positive light that you will want to share the lesson with our school and community. Maybe your school is having a special program or your students or club have planned a community service activity.

When that happens... email myself or Eloy Pacheco and we will cover the story or event for you. If it lends itself to a good photo opportunity... we'll stop by and do that too... or try to get the media there to cover the event.
We need the following to cover an event/story
Early notice - if possible
Brief explanation of event

• Who is involved... students, staff, parents, etc.?
• What is happening?
• Where is it happening?
• When is it happening? (Date and time)
• Why was this event planned? (How does it relate to the curriculum )
These are the great stories that we put on our website, in the newsletter and get in the news, so keep us in the loop on what you are doing.
Looking forward to hearing from you. ....Call with questions.

Chris Hanahan

Yes there is the assistant to Chris Hanahan- Eloy- new position at BOE
Also added Director of State and Federal Progarms and Technology, not director of testing correction.
Yes secretaries at the BOE do make more than some of the teachers- please. Check new teachers salaries.
Plus new position- Director of Teaching and Learning- Dave bill did leave but TWO new high paid positions plus benefits.

Fact- ever since laying off teachers several years ago positions were not replaced-1 less teacher for example at Harvey in each of the core subjects than just six years ago- crowded rooms. Elementary classrooms just keep getting bigger. Elementary principals overburdened.
Heritage out of control and no money for SRO.
