"ONE AND ONLY" adele

Well, the planning Commission passed both resolutions concerning the Steele Mansion Thursday night. Art and Carol have both told me that they had the blessing of the administration on the goals of this project. That being said, then why stop at 34 restrictions… why not have at least 40?

We could have added that electricity be shut off at 11:00pm and no flushing toilets after midnight. No traffic into or out of the Inn after dusk. No omelets except on the Sabbath. Toss in a few more. Why not?

Let’s put up roadblocks because a few city residents oppose this.

Mr. James Callender (who lives next door to the Inn) is against it. He said there should be no spot zoning in this neighborhood. Then he mentioned that many neighbors are against the project, but for some reason, do not want to come forward to oppose the rezoning. Maybe they just agree with you to be polite and do not want to upset you any more then you already are. He also stated that Lake Erie College does not look fondly on the project either. The city should follow up on this to find out if someone is telling the truth or just blowing smoke.

I checked… when Mr. Callender purchased his property, the Steele mansion was already a 15-unit apartment building. He was in constant conflict with the apartment management on the goings on at the building. Let's remember Hal Werner. He purchased a home next to a bar and when things happen that happen at all bars… he was upset. How many of you said ‘what do you expect living next to a bar?’

To be honest, if Steele Mansion had been a single family residence and had never been an apartment building I might understand Mr. Callender’s side of opposing this… but it was a 15 unit apartment BUSINESS.

Am I being hard on Mr. Callender? Well, one statement I remember he made was "Are we destroying a neighborhood, a very nice residential neighborhood because of a slick presentation… because of desperation to save a building?" Mr. Callender, how many single-family residences are currently in this neighborhood and how many apartments and businesses?

One resident voiced his opinion that his neighborhood had turned into many parking lots. He's right... so this is where we draw the line?

Carol and Art Shamakian are quality people wanting to do quality work on bringing this mansion back to life. Others, as well as myself have worried "what if it fails?"
Art assured me the Shamakians will still have a Christmas no matter what. That's good enough for me. It is their time and money and Painesville should be 100% behind them.

Now Mr. Callender, I do not wish to sound tough on you. Please give thought to what would bring more value and prestige to your home and neighborhood… a 15-unit apartment building or a first class Inn. Don't believe me… check with a few real estate agents.

Mr. Callender, you and I will probably not be around in 25 years… do we want to be remembered as people who chose an apartment building or people who backed a great first step in bringing Painesville back?

The only restriction I would like to see is less interference from the administration on this project.

I had to laugh at the guy on the news-herald video who complained about car headlights, his property is on rt 20 for goodness sakes, is he trying to make people think his property gets no light from streetlights or the constant flow of traffic, does he not know what curtains, blinds or shades are for? is this the same guy you are wirting about?

I was very happy to hear Mr Komjati bring up his article on Creativity. We simply cannot do business as usual in this town because clearly it's not working.

I also wonder if any of the "neighbors" (and I use that term loosely), have stayed in a bed and breakfast or Inn the caliber of what will be at the Steele Mansion. Even those who voted. I really think if they had, they would not be against the Inn. I bet the Inn will be much quieter than anything else that has been there in the past or could have been there. I seem to remember an Oscar bash that was well attended back in the day.

Also wish the city has studied the traffic patterns at the football stadium on a Friday night and much as they are making the Shamakians. One way in, one way out, many more cars, trucks and buses then Steele Mansion will ever entertain. And as one who lives off Main Street try to get home after a game is a lesson in patience to be sure. And is this same city that saw fit to put a suicide lane down route 20?

Glad the commission did the right thing.

This will come down to how many on council does Callendar have in his pocket? How much opposition will council bring?
Plannin Commission was only the pre-season. Council will be the Super Bowl.

"No omelets except on the Sabbath"--LOL!

Why would Lake Erie College be opposed to this project? I would think the Steele Mansion would be the ideal place for parents visiting students to stay. Maybe they're miffed they didn't think of it first.

As per having an inn in this neighborhood, it's not an idea without precedent. It's been a while since I've been in Painesville, but old(er)-timers like myself have a vague memory of Studio Inn. I don't remember the exact location, but wasn't it just a block from the Steele Mansion? Although it had become sort of a relic of another era when I grew up in P'ville in the 60's, I believe it served the same sort of function that the Steele Mansion will. This stretch was never exclusively residential...

10:58 I don't or hope he has any on council in his pocket. There might be friendships involved but that's about it. What will decide how council votes? The response of the people of Painesville if people in town appeal to council to have this happen it will.
11:17
Studio Inn if I remember right it was on the north side of Erie St. Where Mentor Ave. heads to Veterans Park and Erie St heads east. Wood St. is also at that intersection.
I don't know if it was torn down for the office building or the Red Bard that came to Painesville in the early 70's. If anyone knows for sure let us know.
Let your councilperson know how you feel about Steele Mansion Inn.
A hint, don't do it anonymously

Your being polite Term. He has at least two in his pocket and YOU know it!
Maybe you fear them?

So with these restrictions am I to understand that only people with reservations can dine at the Inn, and only breakfast?
So my wife and I can't have dinner there if we don't have a room?
If these facts are true Callendar and the city just put this Inn out of business!
We can only hope and pray council has mor sense then what has been shown so far. What a bunch of screwoffs.

I think the whole Mentor Ave should go business and let the business figue out what makes good for the area. Get rid of some those junkie big old homes/ apartments and put in a shopping center with a grocery store or an Aldis store and Starbucks

Boy.. This makes the Callender's EVIL..Don't be a Hater. The Inn owners should by the the Callender's House?

Boy... This DOESN"T make the Callender's EVIL. And I have not read any Hate in these posts.
I mentioned that if that mansion was a single family home, I as well as many other's might understand Mr.
Callenders plight. My point being a first-class Inn would enhanse the surrounding properties more then a apartment building.
Honestly there are no evil people involved in this debate.
I believe the Callenders can sell their home if they want to. I believe in a short time it will show to be wiser to keep the property.

Maybe obtaining Callenders property is the best solution? It would sure speed things up. The Callender'a are nice people but this time it seems they are only thinking about themselves.

Now you are trying to say things get misspelled just to see if the viewers are paying attention? I don't believe that one at all. That's just your way to say you are CYA.

6:14 You caught me! You are so wise. But you are payin atttentioon.

Last night on FOXNEWS 8 seems Painesville is blessed with another problem.
Seems we have an extreme Peeping Tom operating around E. Walnut St.
Cleck out there site to hear about a lady sleeping on her couch and a strange hand stroking her buttocks.
Another reason to keep your door's locked. There's a reason to cover CYA.

By "administration" you mean the appointed residents and members of the committee that put these restrictions on it?

And why hasn't anyone asked why two of the 5 members were not present for this? I'm curious why those two didn't come - was it because they would not vote with the other three?

At March 14, 2012 at 1:29 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

No I mean at the bequest of the city administration given to the Planning Comission by the City Planner. That's the way I saw it.
I have no idea where the other two members were they were excused.
I am very interested in getting a copy of the restrictions and reading all of them.
