"MONEY" pink floyd

I may start a small civil war. Here is a thought on raising revenue for the city.
First, I will admit that there are many of you that drive a car, deliver a baby, and cook a seven course meal all at the same time.
Others that drive a car, help a child with homework and finalize a business deal all at the same time. Multi-taskers...you gotta admire them!
Unfortunately there are many of us that can't. I was almost broadsided by a woman who blew through a stop sign and almost hit me. Then there was the man driving a pick-up with a plow who turned into my lane, both with their heads cocked into a cell phone. It's not a male or female thing it's a human thing. I see it all the time when I'm driving down the road and watching someone texting.... but really hoping they're not.
An ordinance that brings with it a $100 fine: anyone caught using a hand-held cell phone. Other local communities have successfully passed similar ordinances.
Post signs throughout the city to make everyone aware of this ordinance.
As I shop or drive I wonder how we ever got through life without them but there is a limit...or there should be.
Now this is just an idea. I'd like to hear the pros and cons.

Is having parking meters downtown worth the trouble? Costs vs. Revenue.
Is there another way to make sure that county or business employees don't use all the prime parking spots?
Please feel free to make your suggestions, seems council has hit another "Brick in the Wall."

People already DON'T want to come to Painesville...I think a cell phone ban would probably give them yet another reason to avoid us.

On the other hand, I do agree that oblivious cell phone drivers (and oblivious drivers in general) are the scourge of the American motoring public.

The ones that do it all the time are the Police (I like to see when they are sitting in there car if they are on the phone, most of the time you can speed right by them and they don't look up) check them out almost all the time they are on the phone,(and don't tell me it is for police biz.) School bus drivers & school workers, Big truck drivers (all of the garbage truck drivers) it is so much fun watching them try to turn a corner shifting and talking on the phone.

Just heard someone outside looked out the window and there was 3 Latinios on the sidewalk one was taking a leak on the traffic control box, and there was cars at the light, you just got to love this town.

How do the people from Mr Muffler get away with all of the snowplow trucks all over the place, the big one has to large of tires and is way to loud, you should see them when they pull out, its like a convoy going way to fast, and in the summer they were driving there golf cart on the streets (there are other people that drive them on the streets too)

I wonder if any snowplow trucks are checked for insurance, not just Mr Mufflers but all of them, most of them think they own the roads.

Mr. Muffler runs a snow plowing business?
At least the police don't have the vehicle moving.
Good idea or bad, Adam?

Anonymous January 20, 2011 8:30 PM, if you saw that, did you call the police department? They can't be everywhere at once, but if you call them, they'd be happy to check the area out and see if they can find the guy.

Term, if you're asking me how I'd vote on a cell phone ban, I would probably still vote "no".

As far as Mr. Muffler, that big truck with the big tires and exhaust is pretty cool looking, if nothing else.

Well Mr. Term -There you go again.
If it's something or someone that bothers you or is a concern of yours you want to make a change.
If the city came up with that one I'd bet you'd be all over and against it. Are you and Hal Werner related?

I'm just trying to find ways for the city to make money the right way...no unfair or unending taxes etc. If citizens don't offer good suggestions then we can't complain when fire deparment calls start costing you and your insurance company big bucks or if police calls over a certain amount start costing money too, for example. What's your ideas?

Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't the human race survived thousands of years without cell phones? It's bad enough that people dress, eat, read the paper and apply make-up while driving...and you want to say that adding a cell phone to the mix is OK? I may be from a previous generation but I think that the proliferation of cell phone use is intrusive and rude. If you want to use your phone while driving then buy a Bluetooth and do it hands-free. Otherwise, put the phone down and wait until you get where you are going to conduct your personal business. I find it unfortunate that we even feel the need to have this discussion and that common sense and common courtesy are rarely used with cell phone use.

Term, the police do drive and talk on cell phones a lot, just look at them, you will see.

Who cares if the police talk on their phones? In most cases they are talking with a citizen with a complaint, followup or speaking with dispatch about something too long winded for radio conversation. Even if they are discussing family business, what makes 95% of the painesville population any better? Unless you are 90 years old, are commenting from Homestead II, or can't afford a cell or car, you have all used your phone while driving. Now do you want to be pulled over and cited while checking to see if your kids got home safely?

I am not 90 years old nor do I reside at Homestead II...but when I drive I DO NOT use or answer my cell phone. If there happens to be a family thing going on where I am expecting a call, then I pull off the road as soon as I can and take care of it. Many people are rude and discourteous when using their cell phones....I don't want to hear all their personal business at top volume nor do I want them in front of me ordering or checking out and talking on the phone at the same time. We can't legislate common sense or manners but when it is a legitimate safety issue then we should go for it. There are about 4 bills before the Ohio legislature right now concerning texting/talking while driving...so why not be pro-active locally?

I'm not ruled by my cell phone either....I actually look at a clock to see if whoever I'm calling would be busy at that time...I don't expect everyone to drop everything because my call/text is so important. Very little in life is that important. There is something seriously wrong with anyone that has that obsessive need to have a cell phone glued to their ear.

Hey-here's a thought though it wont help the city it will help the schools.
SELL the property you bought in the Skinner/Sanford area. Remember when they bought that land to build on? Why are they still sitting on it? It may be just a drop in the bucket of the money pit, but anything will help.

I'm curious is to what is being done with casement golf course. The last I heard the owners had to close because it was damaged and not worth repairing or keeping open after the flood. In terms of making money for the city in positive ways, I think that it might be a good ROI if purchased at a big discount by Rita. This would satisfy her itch to buy land and can make money in greens fees. Open land free of structures is low risk to be damaged (100 years from now in another flood) and can be used for golf, x country skiing, hayrides or whatever. Now before you jump down my throat screaming about how broke we are..Keep in mind Willoughby and Mentor both operate lucrative golf courses in Lost Nation and Blackbrook golf courses. When it comes to spending money to make money this might be a good thought because we aren't as broke as you may think with the biggest carryover in Lake County.

Ja'bubu, That's thinking outside the box. Thats an idea worth looking into.
I once was told that the city would be given that land?

Golf course. Hated to see it destroyed.

Now, the cost. Yes, the layout is still there. Problem is that the greens were destroyed. Greens are the most expensive part of the course. They say it costs anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000 or more to build a green. Now the fairways, probably need to be cleaned up and new grass planted. Now golf carts need to be purchased. Does all the maintenance equipment come with purchase?

Now the land purchase. How much? You need the clubhouse too. How much?? The new Casement. That is where the golfers parked. Now where are you going to park?

I see a minimum of $500,000 to repair course. Appraised value of course---$316,000. Again, how much to buy clubhouse---$212.000. Plus more land for parking? Who knows.

I see a NOTE for a million or more dollars for this to happen. I also believe the cost to repair course would be more than I said because it would be run by the city.

Show me the money and not the taxes.

Golf course is in the township. Has to be a reason Sidley's didn't repair it. Large cost or not enough profit to make it worthwhile. Maybe the city can annex more property and turn it into a soccer-golf course. Can you count to 9 in Spanish? Wonder if golf courses pay taxes and at what rate.

New name for clubhouse.

Although a few people have legitimate concerns as to the viability of a golf course I applaud them for getting creative in their thinking and actually posting a new idea. 8:03 and Ja'bubu....have any more thoughts. We sure need them!
