"FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST." rod stewart

Well, the Painesville School Board held its monthly meeting Monday night. I can't even start to get the facts to you. First, check the school system site tomorrow to see how our district compares to all nearby districts. Dr. Hanlon was fixated with Ashtabula City Schools and Lorain City Schools? Check the school web site.
Mr. Bull discussed AYP & AMAO. At first I thought it was a new railroad through town. He explained "Adequate Yearly Progress" and "Annual Measured Achievement Objectives". I got the feeling we didn't do too hot.
In 1979 Painesville Schools were approximately 20% African American, 80% White.
Today we are 17% African American, 32% White 11% Mixed and 40% Hispanic. A big change in 30 years.
We authorized the submission to the state to go back to half-day kindergarten. Only as another tool to work with? Nothing decided yet.
Also the Board declared it necessary to put an emergency levy on the May ballot that would generate $1,400,000 millage. Still just a proposal at this point. If you remember last November they had been asking for $900,000 in additional funds.
Go to the school site Tuesday for the comparisons, and if you have the chance watch the meeting on Channel 12 at 2:30 daily TIVO if you can.

Of course all these new Hispanic students all come frome families legally here. No wonder we're called Spainsville.

Half-day kintergarden? May work for them but what about all those parents that work and have made plans to cover those few hours of day care? Having to come up with a whole new schedule (and the transportation involved) will be just enough problems and expense to keep parents from working. They'll have to make a cost-benefit analysis and one of them staying home will be cheaper and easier/safer than going to work. Or that extra day-care will push the cost to unaffordable, forcing them to stay home. (Has anyone priced decent day-care recently? They do a very important job and are probably underpaid..but the cost hits the most hard-pressed group...young parents in new careers/jobs) We don't need less school...we need more school. More hours per day...more days per year.

Complaining about Hispanic students doesn't solve the problem. That's Painesville City schools' reality...what can be done?

What's with the deal being fixated on Ashtabula and Lorain....they're both school systems that are in big trouble too. I just looked them both up on the state education site. If Hanlon was using them for comparison that doesn't make sense. Why would you use school systems that are bigger? Apples to oranges. Why not Fairport or Madison? Oh yeah...their scores are much higher...makes us look bad.

They're gonna cut kindergarden and AP classes but want more money? Please don't threaten me Mr Hanlon with losing a half a day of kindergarden unless I vote for your next levy. Give you more money and get even less in return? I'm not a Harvey 50% graduate...even I can see that's a very bad deal for me and the kids. You don't have a prayer of getting another dime out of me unless I see your house in order...cut administration instead of support staff...and get your teachers' union in line and on board. And even then I won't guarantee I'd vote for more money...just like you won't guarantee keeping needed services.

He is using Ashtabula and Lorain because they are similar demographics.

Makes sense to me.

Are you saying that the schools first responsibility is to baby sit the children?

Might be part of the problem with our schools.

At January 13, 2011 at 6:22 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is 6:22...no I am not saying that at all...I'm just trying to explain the realities that families face when trying to comply with school regulations. A lot like when they cut bussing so more kids had to walk further. Parents of elementary and middle school kids (and alot of high school parents too) didn't want to let their kids walk so now they drive them. That requires a lot of coordinated effort to get the kids out the door and yourself to work on time. And I don't think kindergarden is a babysitting service at all...if its only going to be half-day then by the time they get there, get their coats off and settle down its time to start getting ready to leave. Doesn't leave alot of time for actually educating. We've already fallen pretty far in world rankings for education and we want to cut down on the time spent in the classroom? Especially at such a crucial age when the fundamentals are being learned. Kindergarden teachers have an awesome responsibility and we are suggesting setting them and their students up for failure by cutting schoool hour attendence. Hope that clears it up.

Hey....I see that all the elementary schools and the middle school are still listed under their old names on the state's Department of Education site. I was doing some research and it dawned on me that anyone not familar with the Lathrop, Huntington, State Street and Hobart names wouldn't be able to use the state site to look up scores etc. Wonder how that happened? Maybe the state of Ohio likes those names better than trees.

Does Hanlon have any suggestions on how to raise scores? If he can compare us to other not-so-successful school systems then maybe he can use that info to draw some conclusions as to what the problems might be and come up with some ideas on how to fix them....besides cut....cut...cut.

More bad news- the trickle effect has been happening from the last round of cuts - the bumping has begun. It's ugly too. Asst.Super comes in during the middle of the day and calls out the people affected, tells them they're being replaced then sends them on back to the classroom to continue their day. That's just mean and wrong again. This is the same thing they have done in the past and its cruel and heartless.

To 8:02 ...I am so sorry to hear that the cuts are happening and in such a manner. How much notice are they getting...or are they done at the end of that day? Any severence? Are these jobs eliminated entirely or are the people let go being replaced by others with more senority? I hate to ask but I have never worked for a school in any capacity and just want to know exactly how it works. Thanks for educating us...

12:00 The first thing you do is show up. Listen ask questions. Your presense alone makes the board and the administration realize you are concerned the direction the school's have taken.
12:07 Your right the only time I have complained is when there on in the middle of the day.
I'm sorry to hear about the way the layoffs are handled. Then again what would you believe would be the best way to do it?
The employees of this system have been told over and over how they are part of a family, or community.
Most have never heard of layoff's for family members?
Funny, I thought one person on the administration would go to the unions and tell them we need to cut x amount of dollars, do you have any suggestions other then layoffs? I guess that's to radical of an idea here in Painesville.
I'll have a new post coming about the school system soon. Anyone heard that they want one school go to a year round school year?

At January 14, 2011 at 6:15 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

There is a difference between a layoff and being fired. Both must be done either at the beginning of the day or at the end. I can't believe they sent them back to work.
People would have many things on their minds. Finances are one, plus no one under any condition wants to hear they are no longer needed. The administration and the union must both come up with a better system. No way should that employee be asked to fulfill his/ her daily duties that day.
Bad things could happen.

Passing two indicators out of 26 is pretty much the basement already. (* Note: one of those indicators is attendence and I hear they don't even take it until 2nd or 3rd period so the numbers look a little better. If that's not true I hope someone corrects me.) A graduation rate of 65.7%...meaning if you sit outside Harvey High at dismissal, almost 4 of every 10 students that you see will NOT be attending graduation. And for those kids that do graduate and go on to college....their attendence at Harvey is held against them...because of local regulations like the 50% policy. Then there's lower-echelon lay-offs and service cuts. And now they want more money but won't tell us how they plan on spending it? Mr Hanlon...you have done little to enhance the school system or your resume. You have feathered your personal nest at the student's expense. You should be taking a really hard look at your administration and making the necessary changes to restore confidence in our system. A token pay cut on your part isn't enough. It's time for you to get your administrative house in order before I can even think of giving you more money. I understand the budget constraints are very real...but I do not like my intelligence insulted by their use of subtle intimidation to wrest more money from me.

To Anonymous I hear there's some administrative secretaries that make 50 - 70 THOUSAND dollars.....anyone verify?

That is public record. Anyone and everyone can go to the BOE and request any information and will receive it within "reasonable" time.
If you make a request and they don't comply they are in violation and can be fined.
You can contact the Attorney General's office to make a complaint.

I will ask on the schools rumor mill. Do we have secretaries making wages in the $50,000 to $70,000 range, and why if we do?
We should get an answer by Wednesday remember their off Monday.

They lay off like this, they tell you that you are gone, some after spring break some at end of year, then they give you a list of people you can bump, you get 48 hrs to pick, if you do not bump you get no un-emp. pay, get this if you started the same day as someone else, you get to pick a number out of a hat, the one with the lowest number is the one that gets the lay off or bumped.

THE LAY OFF HURTS (I know)

GOD HELP US ALL

At January 15, 2011 at 4:58 PM , Anonymous Wolverine said...

The rumor mill will not be the most honest place to find that. Again any info that is a public record is available to anyone that requests it and it must be given to those making the request. You may not be able to get it the same day as you have to give them ample time to get it ready. Just walk in and ask for it. PERIOD.
As long as you are on the rumor mill, maybe ask why many of the schools are falling apart. Look around at the buildings inside and see the shoddy work. But what would you expect when amateurs (who gave themselves stipends and padded their bank accounts with the money) were in charge instead of hiring experts.

While you are asking maybe someone can clarify the free lunch and breakfast deals.
Thought it was paid for through grant money. (Can't figure that one either since the whole country is broke- where does this money come from? China?) Yet on one of the notes from the last workshop it said the free program was going to be stopped due to the cuts.
Maybe they should serve rice w/chopsticks.

OK, Quit complaining about the way layoffs are handled, if it is like any other union contract it is something the union voted on and put in the contract.

Anonymous 2:15

This is one example of why unions are bad. No mention of how good a job a person does. Just the number of days worked. Tenure is the same as civil service job protection. All you HAVE to do is walk thru the door and basically keep your mouth shut. Add the 50% policy, and about all our schools do is take attendance.

Now, any of the good teachers must teach down to the lowest performing student in the class. Add the elimination of most advanced programs or classes and the school's performance are sure to go down, not up.

We have all new buildings now. How soon will they need major repairs because the kids destroy them. I give them 10 years at most.

TO: Anonymous January 16, 2011
Yes,a union contract is one thing, BUT the problem is administration doesn't follow it. They sneak into the building like the grim reaper and don't tell the unsuspecting victim they can have union representation. Even the union president and v. pres don't even know when they are going to come in. They are violating the contract and know it.
Very sneaky and ugly.

Yes there is some vandalism but a lot of things breaking and just falling off or apart.
My granddaughter told me the door handle to one of the main doors at the middle school was gone then a part broke on another door so the doors wouldnt lock, real secure.
Hopefully it got fixed over the weekend.
Who knows whats at the other schools, my other grandchild is to little to notice still.

I received a list of 20 secretaries
top wage was $37,989 to $25,142.
Harly $70,000 a year.

Of course things break and fall apart at work and around your house But- is your house only 2,3,4years old. And did every taxpaying resident in Painesville give you their hard earned money to build your house? Then you abuse it, run it down, treat the help like dirt and then you come back and to ask those same hard working people for More Money? No Way

Asked for more salaries I guess I should have asked for Administrative Secretaries wages also. Eye opening, Back to asking for everyones salary. Got it today.we are paying some great wages and before anyone mentions I'm jealous, yes you may be right.
My plan is to suggest a wage cut to keep everyone working, what that amout would be to save a certain amount of money in the system. 8%- 12% whatever. Before union members start screaming check with other union's and see what they have faced. Don't tell me your a Professional and you don't abide by the same rules.
To the school board get tough or step aside if you can't make the tough choices. Everyone in the PSLC better realize your also part of the global economy.
