KODACHROME......paul simon

Just a quick drive-by of our dump....oops, I mean recycling center. I wasn't aware that empty paint cans and the odd Christmas tree were permitted. And just remember folks....this 'recycling center' will cost the city of Painesville $20,000 for the next five months.

Pictures like these make me remember why I lug all my recyclables out to my dad's place in Mentor...where they still have curbside recycling.

I'm sure the excuse will be that it's only like this once a year, after Christmas...but there's not a single business in town that could get away with this. WHERE'S THE FENCE?

It' looks almost as bad on a weekly.
Drive by and enjoy the view of RITA'S DUMP!

This is how she runs the city.

Just back from CO and visited a small recycling center in a town much smaller that Painesville.
They have normal hours and a volunteer to help you sort and unload your stuff. It was clean, had flower boxes, no fence, didn't need on.

What would a fence cost? I think I'd rather give a real person a stipend to work there.

The small city in CO. found they could cut their charges from their recycler if they did most of the sorting at their end. Also found the local judge can appoint a work permit to non violent offenders to work at the recycling center.

These are no brainers. I wonder if Rita or someone on council had to look at this mess everyday it would remain such a dump.

Also there are paper recyclers who will pay you to collect the paper. Harvey used to have one on the property, it was great!

I also take my recyclables up the road as half the time our "recycling center" does nothing more than contribute to the litter and pollution problem already plaguing this country.

Thanks City Hall and Council!

I only went there two or three times and it was like this every time. I take my recyclables to Fairport now. Fairport's dropoff is much better kept than this eyesore. There's no excuse for this.

They shouldn't even have to empty these dumpsters, most things blow down to the river. Plastic on bin, cardboard and paper in another, glass in this one. I forgot it all gets dumped into the same truck. Visit uu in beautiful downtown Painesville?

Did Santa bring you a new toy for Christmas? A camera with instructions on to post pictures now?
You can't blame the WRONG things being DUMPED at that site. Thats just lazy and ignorant people.
I take it you and the above posters are in favour of PAYING for curbside recycling? Or do you want that for free too?

I like madpotters idea. How about an enclosed area open from 8:00am to 8:00pm with two shifts of people doing community service by court order. Helping people do their recycling and if anyone wants to dump off non-recyclables being told not to, if they do, give the licence of the vehicle to police. Simple
No it's not just the city's fault but by their operation of this center it's their responsibility.

At January 6, 2011 at 5:08 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Even on the days the bins are picked up the place still is a dump.

Wolverine, the pictures speak for themselves. It's clearly something that the city has been delinquent in. In other words, it wasn't made that way overnight, but the writing should have been on the wall a long time ago.

I like the idea of putting non-violent offenders down there so they can work off their community service, while keeping that area clean and free from stuff that shouldn't be there. Next time we pick someone up for graffiti or vandalism charges, give them a paintbrush and a gallon of paint and turn them loose on freshening up those dumpsters.

In other news, I've reopened http://44077.proboards.com after a year of it being closed. I haven't been inspired to write anything yet, but maybe I will work on something for tonight. Anyone can post their thoughts there and folks can respond to them. It's not better than here, it's just another option.

Adam,
maybe your board could get some younger blood to run for council. Too many old guard have been on their seats too long!
A couple of the old geezers need to retire and sure would be nice to some fresh ideas presented!

best of luck on the board!

Just a question. What or who determines if someone is an old geezer? Does political party, previous profession or nepotism enter into the equation?

At January 7, 2011 at 4:20 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

An old geezer could describe someone who's sat in the same chair for 30 years, believes he's done, and doing an outstanding job.
Other qualifications include bending the truth, making false remarks about others, along with something in his genes that tell's him he has no need to listen to others and has convinced himself he is right about everything.
Anybody you know?

At January 7, 2011 at 4:30 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

An old geezer, takes no responsibility for the damage and costs he or she has caused. Political party, employment, and nepotism need not enter into the equation.
We have a very well paid part-time director that sits at city hall Painesville.
Where was his recommendation on these stupid power agreements the city enter into?

There are some on the sitting on council who have been there so long they get a free ticket to geezer-palooza.

Would someone from council or the city be responsible for contacting the judicial system about assigning a non violent offender to work at the dump?

Just wondering where to start the process........

madpotter go to a council meeting and get ready for that blank stare, when yo ask about something they might do.
Again, its the city's responsibility it's their dump.
For what Waste Management charges those bins should at least be the proper ones how about lids?
On your way pass Millstone do you see that garbage bin sitting by the road that belongs to the garage just before the Main St. bridge "Welcome to Painesville" it says it all. Flower baskets on the brige, dumpster by the road.

TONY, That would be Mr. Gurley who we pay benefits to but he also works in his own law office along with employement by Perry and Mentor on the lake.
Could also be the water department that director is "double dipping" but who besides the administration know that?

Yes, this is all part of Hal's ward.

That dumpster at the garage by the bridge is near the street because the place is a mess and the truck can't get close to the building to pick it up. Now why does this business get a pass? Check out the owner, it will give you the answer. Remember we don't profile in Painesville.

Did Hal take these Photos and then email the Termster ? Did anyone see the garbage in gront of the guys house that sold the Steele Manson? Nasty... I walked by and noticed a lot of leather straps and chains?

4:36 Nothing to do with me just the scheduled pick-up day.
I would like to know if the city will make the garage move that dumpster away from the road?

When we had curb-side recycling, the city of Paine stated that it was illegal for anyone to pilfer anything out of our bins. With the recycling area, many many tear-it apart to find the aluminum: yet, do they ever clean-up their mess?
I will give you one guess as to who does this and their initials are "II" and "M". We have winessed this first hand.
Yes, this recycling sight has always been a "slum" sight for this supposed wonderful city.
Oh yes, separate all of the recycles you have because this is what needs to be done. Yet, as stated before and we have witnessed, one Truck takes everything away. Hope they have enough workers to separate/separate/separate for all of our items.
Check this out. The recycles of this U.S. go on to foreign countries (China #1) and they could care less for the sorting process. These folks, not us, gain all of the revenue from recycled materials.

I was talking to a fellow citizen (woman) at the recycling center. We just both happened to be there at the same time. She said she was there one night and a man popped up from inside one of the bins. Seemed to be a Mexican. Probably lucky she didn't have a heart attack. The man didn't threaten her in any way, just startled her.

2:40 I have been told that the bins had their lids removed after the city administration found out "Homeless" people were sleeping inside of them at night. That explains why they don't have lids, but did anyone appreciate what the wind would do to the garbage in the bin?
How Hal handles the bin at the garage will be interesting. Maybe if Hal spent less time looking at what's next door to his house and more time on what's occurring in Ward II.

At January 9, 2011 at 4:00 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

So who owns (or has a business in, whichever is the case) the garage?

At January 9, 2011 at 4:06 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have to say one thing about the no lids. As a not-very-strong woman, I have, in the past, had trouble getting things into bins with covers. Might sound silly to a man or maybe even some other women, but for that reason, I am glad the bins don't have covers, although I certainly see the benefits of having covers. Everytime I put cardboard, etc., in there, I AM worried it will be blown out. It would be good if those things could have a lighter cover, or maybe even two covers. One could be just a lightweight cover to keep things in, while not keeping me out.

I drop off recyclables every other week and I have only seen the bins overflowing twice - both times the day after Christmas. Frankly I am thrilled that so many people in Painesville make the extra effort in the middle of winter to recycle. I think putting a fence around it would discourage people from using the center since it is in a somewhat secluded location - open is more safe. For the same reason - the only people I want to see there are other recyclers. And I prefer no lids - hard to lift if you are short - and jeez - who wants to touch the lid anyway?

At January 11, 2011 at 3:57 PM , Blogger Sandy Miller said...

Not that a fence is the answer however I will say; location, location, location.

When I took stuff up to the Township, the recycling is at the garage. Well how smart is that? No special trip needed to check on the bins or dumpsters. They have set hours and the place is clean.

Where our recycling bins are located are out of sight for anyone at city hall unless they make a trip. I don't care how many times Lee says he sends guys to check on it, it's a special trip.

So how about moving it to the city garage?

Didn't they buy a house over there to give them more space? Surely they could figure this out.

9:21 Your definition of recycled items may just be a little different then mine? Christmas trees? paint cans? coffee grounds, baby crib's even a lawnmower. This is a garbage dump.
Great no lids why don't you spend an hour or two picking up the stuff that blows out of the bins?

At January 13, 2011 at 5:54 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey Potty,
How many people will go down to the garage to dump stuff, that is the bad part of town, very bad.

With all the empty property in Painesville they can't find an appropriate site to relocate the recycling center? My main reason for wanting a fence is because it is an eyesore for anyone leaving or coming to Rec Park. If a fence is a safety issue then fix the safety problem or move the dump..I mean recycling center.

At January 13, 2011 at 5:44 PM , Blogger Sandy Miller said...

Well 5:54 since the center would only open when the garage is open and it would be broad daylight I would not have a problem with that.

I would think that would be better than having a homeless person jump out of the dumpster at you.

and you know with your attitude you would be the first one to have trouble no matter where the center would be located.......

What are the hours that the garage is open?

At January 15, 2011 at 7:03 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

One thing that I think needs to happen with recycling, is that once a year, the city (or someone) needs to mail recycling rules and information to the residents. People don't really know which numbers can be recycled, for one thing, and what is acceptable as far as paper is concerned, etc. I doubt the recycling center wants all the plastic bags that people throw in with cans, etc., inside.

I'm not saying that would fix the whole problem. Obviously we have many people who are just using and taking advantage of the system to get rid of their garbage. Judging by what is happening at that site, we have a lot of people in our city who have low character.

It's a mistake, however, to think that people know exactly how to recycle, or that they will pick up the phone to find out.

At January 16, 2011 at 1:31 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

If the times for recycling are limited to office hours, it will cut out a lot of recycling, including mine. I can never make it there until much later.
