"I'D LOVE TO CHANGE THE WORLD" 10 years after

Painesville Pride
October 2010
COUNCIL'S CORNER
Jim Fodor, Council-at-Large

With fall comes another Browns football season. This year especially has seen reason for HOPE for Browns fans. This HOPE comes from the leadership both on and off the field. The Browns organization has a plan for improvement that will bring winning and pride to Cleveland. Painesville City Council and Administration also have a plan to move the city forward and provide the citizens of Painesville reason to HOPE.....

First don't blame me for the analogy blame Jim Fodor.

As most of you know Cleveland coach Eric Mangini was fired Monday. The Browns organization just doesn't see back to back 5-11 seasons as progress.
What do you think, is Painesville just another 5-11 city? And for how long?
How long will our city leaders be happy with present results.
Is it time to change Painesvilles coach?

Maybe we would get someone in city government to expose the corruption with the Power Factor on your utility bill?
Wonder why First Energy doesn't screw their customers like this?
To Andy Flock, where will the money come to pay Amp.inc.? The power factor. Make the city manager admit to it.
The things that are buried in that figure are amazing.

Hey!What about that council meeting? And who says Mr. Werner isn't in this just for himself??
You all should (not really) be a union member with the school and see how things there are handled by him.

I thought over a month ago this was going to come to a head.
It's pretty hard not to think his comments weren't a little self-serving but that's Hal.
I am sure the bar owner knows who Hal is and I'm sure Hal has the police departments ear.
The school employees voted for Hal so they will have to deal with what's coming down the track. I don't see Hal siding against our new governor, so be prepared.
Somehow a very Conservative Republican being a local union leader it will be interesting.

Hal, "a very Conservative Republican".

What a joke. Hal is a member of the Werner Party. Depends on which way the wind blows.

I believe he has angered both sides so he will only get support from himself.

I just watched the last council meeting on TV. Watched Arlene Becks have her three minutes. It not only looks like she is clearly planning on running for council next time, but she already started to campaign with her three minute comment at this council meeting. She was useless and rude and uppity the first time she was in office. I for one will certainly not be voting for her. I hope I'm wrong about her running, but she did everything but stand on her head and declare.

I'm pretty sure that if the whole bar situation was located anywhere in town but next door to Hal he would be the first to champion a new business start-up...but since it's in his back-yard (so-to-speak) he is letting his personal feelings totally override what he is there for, which is doing what's best for 1) his ward and 2) the rest of town. I would ALMOST understand his concerns if a bar/restaurant had never been there before but that location has historically had some kind of liquor establishment. Here's a couple of questions for Hal that I imagine he will never answer honestly....What makes you think you can use your public office for what is essentially a personal matter? Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think I've heard any other resident in that area speak up against it. And two...do you think you're too good to live next door to a drinking establishment? You sure give that impression. I won't tell you to move out of town like so many others do on this site...but why don't you just buy the property yourself and shutter it...put your money where your mouth is. I am very tired of your grandstanding. And I bet the new owners aren't feeling warm and fuzzy toward you either.

At January 5, 2011 at 8:55 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

This could be a case where Hal being a councilman just might work against him. He has already spent time at council meeting explaining his position. If the owner of this Bar gets the impression that he is being harresment by the city. Make way for a law suit. Personally I would'nt blame him. First I have not even seen a report of the police being called to the Bar in the newspaper, and maybe Hal would be better served if he worked with his neighbor instead of the constant complaints?
Whats his plan for the railroad?

Term, as you know, I am a resident of Hal’s ward. As such, I’ve been tuned in to most of his remarks at council meetings, even though I cannot usually attend them. And you’re right – Hal usually doesn’t make a comment unless it’s somehow self-serving. He is so out of touch with his ward - unless something happens within 500yds of his house, it's not a problem to him...

With regards to his and his wife’s comments about Jackie’s Bar And Grille, it’s just more of the same from the family.

“Move On Already” said it best, and I just want to echo his or her sentiments. Hal’s only problem with this bar is that it’s right next door to his homestead. If it were ANYWHERE else but South State St., he would be taking the credit for bringing a new business and jobs to Painesville.

Barb Werner’s comments about the bar are ludicrous at best. She describes a “serious and dangerous” situation at the location, then goes on at length about someone emptying bottles into a dumpster and slamming doors. I hardly think that someone emptying trash or an abrupt closing of a door is even HALF as loud as the N&S railroad tracks that see quite a bit of traffic in the overnight hours.

Barb also mentioned “rescue squads coming and going at all times”, yet since the bar has opened (and even a few weeks before), I researched and found only TWO ambulance calls to 569 S. State Street. Both times, the ambulance went to one of the apartments on the property, NOT the bar itself. Further, after researching police activity at the location, most times the police are on the property, it seems to be for the apartments! In other words, THE BAR IS NOT THE PROBLEM. The only times the police have been IN the bar itself, was when they were out on a basic business check…which the cops do for ALL businesses in Painesville, not just bars.

Hal should be happy that he has a GREAT-looking establishment that seems to be finding its niche in the Painesville area. Instead, he has decided to turn his job on city council into a way of grandstanding AGAINST what is a law-abiding establishment.

Oh, and for the record: Jackie’s Bar And Grille serves some amazing food! I love it.

Move On Already, 7:17 PM - No problem, but it's not like I really did anything out of the ordinary. Anyone can request information about police and fire activity at a certain address. It is all public record.

There is a great possibility that Hal Werner just plain doesn't realize what's really going on. I wonder if he is aware that the apartment next to Jackie's Bar is causing most of the problems there. After all, with the way the apartment is situated, it would certainly LOOK like the police were at the bar when in fact they were next door.

The City told us that Residential Homes would be built on the old HHS site. Homes that would fit in with the surronding residential area. That appears to be a lie. They once again told us what we wanted to hear, not the truth. I've learned from the School Board Meeting notes, the News Hearld and the Lake County Port Authority web site that LEC is in cohoots with the PCLS and LCPA to purchase the old school property at a low price and build "multistoried Dormatories". No one knows or is willing to say how many stories, how many students or weather the College will pay property taxes. I'd sooner live next to "Rita's Dump" or "Jackie's Bar" than 800 College students cramed on 8 acres of prime residential property!

I ordered a Rum and Coke and a bowl of Chili sat at the 15 or so seat bar, watched three hi-def T.V.'s. Sorry, no naked ladies, joints, gambling, fights.
Just five blue collar workers sitting at the bar. two people ordering carry-out. Two familys having dinners, along with a couple in the front wibndow discussing God knows what. A very clean, well thought out Bar and if you ever been in Mike's you wouldn't know it was the same place.
Talked to the owner and asked if he had talked to Hal. He told me Hal had his cell phone number and was told to call him anytime if there was a problem.

I am surely with YOU, 1:19. I hope everyone remembers what a detriment to the city of Painesville residents Horvath was and does not elect him or anyone having to do with him ever again.

Term, 8:52: You are putting it very mildly when you say "meddling." I think if Murphy runs again, he ought to warn people right on his campaign literature that there will be lies told about him at the last minute before the election, when there is not enough time to defend himself.

It's Painesville politics.
This is how things are done in Painesville. For the council to be affective to the administrations needs they need four seats in there corner and that is the goal by hook or crook.

I know Murphy personally and find him to be one of those rare things..an honorable man. I think Painesville would be a much better place if he were elected. If he does run again though, I hope he changes his strategy a little to incorporate the realities of running for office in Painesville. I don't believe he could ever lower himself to compete on the same subterranean level as some of the folks already in charge...but he should find a way to neutralize them. And those of us that claim to be concerned citizens had best get together and come up with some kind of general plan...instead of a few different individuals and groups going it alone. Sounds like there are a lot of smart people out there...lets get together and see what we come up with.

Murphy would have been a great addition to council. People in Ward III have to ask themselves if they have been properly represented in the past three years? It's no secret the Mr. Fountain is very ill .
I can't uderstand the way Joe Hada attacked Mr. Murphy in the Ward III race only after watching council for over five years Fountain has voted exactly like Hada, or maybe Hada voted the same as Fountain that's the start of the band of four.
I receve man calls from people telling me they get no response from Fountain, I tell them to call Murphy. It's like on the job training
What they fear is someone asking tough questions along with putting residents first as opposed to putting the administration first.
A good example I as well as councilman Flock have asked how the "power factor" is arrived at I would like them to take a residents bil .They could use mine if they like. Explain everyy penny and how they arrived at this figure. Are attorney fees included?
Exactky what does AMP-OHIO cost me on the bill? Murphy on council along with Flock could demand an answer. Could the power factor be used to pay the fines to AMP we owe? How would that figure into the bill? What about the Gorsuch fine?
It's time for a change and to demand some answers.

At January 9, 2011 at 3:36 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am another resident who was shocked at what those in power in Painesville did to keep Murphy out of office. That should be front page news to let people know who the people really are who are running this city, and what they are willing to do to keep Murphy out. That alone (knowing what lengths they are willing to go to, to keep him out), should let you know how badly we need him in there. For the last few years, whenever I have a problem in the city I need addressed, I call Murphy. He has done for me what Flock has not done in all the years he has been in office. REW has a good idea. Maybe we should start an exploring committee to see who we can get to run, and to make sure we have a solid plan to try to get Murphy into office. We also need to see if we can come up with a plan in case they start telling lies again about Murphy.

At January 11, 2011 at 4:54 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I disagree and think all of you are wrong to not want the dorms there.

First you are worried about property tax and yet I have never heard any of you speak out about the County, all the churches, etc. That property is a drop in the bucket compared to what the County and Churches take. Put that property on the open market and I'll bet right now you would be lucky to sell it for even $250,000.

It is not up to Painesville what happens to that property. It is owned by the schools and the sale is regulated by the State of Ohio because State money was used to build the new school.

The Port Authority is in this to float the bonds (I think around 10 million?, not sure) to build the dorms. For everyone against this I would challenge you to find someone willing to invest even a million dollars in this town, much less 10 million.

We have a college that is growing and it will continue to grow despite some residents who complain constantly about everything. Knowing it will continue to grow if you examine all the different options for student housing a large multi-floor dorm is much more desireable and controllable than renting out single family homes all around the neighborhoods.

I have children that went to different colleges, they lived in dorms, apartments, rented houses, and just about anything else we could imagine. I can say with certainty the circumstance I was most comfortable as being controlled by the school was the dorms.

At January 13, 2011 at 6:32 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

To 4:54 I don't think dorms are necessarily a bad idea...just that if that's the way it goes, then Painesville residents get the right bang for the buck on the property and have some input on safety and aesthetic issues. I don't want to see LEC take over any more apartment complexes because it displaced a lot of residents. I just would like to see a spirit of cooperation so that everyone is OK with the outcome. I don't think that is unreasonable.

Well the only quiet dorms I experienced at Kent were married student housing.
