"CUTS LIKE A KNIFE" bryan adams

Just watching the news channels I get the impression the economy will pick-up somewhat in the coming year but unemployment will still stay in the 8 or 9 percent range.
How does this affect the City of Painesville? Less Federal and State money coming into the city's coffers?
Let's not even think for a minute school levy or no school levy passing when over 65% of your income is generated from the federal and state governments sorry there's going to be some major changes.
How these administrations implement these cuts will be interesting. Will the city cut Chiefs or Indians? Will the school administrators cut administration or staff?
Then again will the union members look at the big picture of protecting fellow members or will we have overtime with no wage or benefit cuts for city workers?
Will teachers say "NO" to wage and benefit cuts and we will see programs cut along with class size increasing to 35 students or more?
We will see human nature displayed at it's best or worse.
To the council and boards of both the city and the schools. It's business as usual when there's enough money to go around. You all wanted to be elected to these positions and as we all know its's alot harder to say No than YES.
Go out and check with the general public what they have been facing in the last couple of years? Ask about wages and benefits along with how many co-workers were "downsized". I don't envy any of you but you must first remember you are representatives of the residents and not the employees.

I happen to disagree. Unemployment will stay above 9 to 9.5% unless they use pie charts to report the numbers.

The economy will get a slight boost from Christmas sales but temp workers will be let go. We might be lucky to increase 2% but still not enough to have a big effect on the unemployment. Companies will still be cautious.

There is still the costs of unemployment benefits, the effect of the rest of the world's economies and the negative results of deficit spending.

I say it will be sometime in 2012-2013 before it drops into the mid 8% range.

You probably more right than I am, after you look at the numbers. Housing starts may drag on a lot longer then this year or next.
Inflation on the way? Gasoline prices along with food prices are showing up with higher cost.
In all honesty 9:38 what would be your solution to the unemployment benefit problem?

Jobs.

We need a Congress we can believe in and not fight with. We need to elect politicians for what they can do and not for what party they belong. We need to work together to solve our problems with the economy and so do the elected officials.

Right now people worry most about their jobs. Congress is nothing more than a bunch of snake oil sellers. Promise anything just to get elected. Jobs will solve the unemployment benefit problem while reducing the deficit spending needed to support the benefits. Then we can get back to positive growth in the economy. A good economy means everyone is happier. I know people without work need temporary help but now we seem to be throwing our good tax money after a negative growth unemployment benefits provide to the ecomomy.

All the polls show that the average American has little faith in our leaders from top to bottom. Change this and people just might have a more positive outlook and just maybe willing to start spending money again which will create jobs. We need confidence in our leaders, not suspicions.

A New Years resolution to think about. Wishful thinking, I know but we need a positive outlook to look forward too.

Happy New Year

1:11 Great thoughts, you do realize American business have been shipping jobs out of the country for 30 years. Along with quite an escalation in the past 10.
How do we bring them back? What new ideas are on the horizon? Solar power, anything America can again lead the world with?
Probem goes back to all of us GREED and it will be the end of this country.

I will go to great lengths to help the needy but could care less about the GREEDY. Companies against the unions and government vs the people. Seems there is to much greed to go around. Companies need employees and employees need jobs. Politicians need voters and voters need public servants.

We can work together to help the needy at Christmas then go right back to only looking out for #1 the day after. We are all in this together. We all need to get along and work together. We seem to live in a disposable economy now soon to dispose our whole economy. Somehow we need to find a middle ground between say a sweat shop and 5 guys holding shovels looking at a hole in our streets. A good worker will produce for a company and a good company will reward that worker with job dependability and pay. We need to get back to that. Our schools and our entitlement dependent society has gotten us away from that.

One of the provisions in the new tax cut extension gives tax credits to companies that build wind power generators. Wonder who gets credit for this, Obama or the Republicans who wanted to extend the tax cuts. Or maybe this is just a first baby step on bipartisanship. Seems most people aren't against tax abatements if it brings a company to their town for jobs, so maybe we need to do more things like this.

At December 28, 2010 at 12:52 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

To 10:36: I'm not 100% sure how the tax credits came along for companies that build wind power, but it was probably Obama. He's been trying to do that, and other things like that, for a very long time to spur the economy and jobs, and make sure we are building our own green energy here, and the Republicans have been blocking it. So he probably put it in the deal as one of the conditions for him signing a tax cut that included the wealthiest Americans, which he did not want. As far as the tax cuts in general go, Obama wanted them. He campaigned on it. He just didn't want tax cuts for the wealthiest Ameicans, too, but the Republicans would not sign it without EVERYONE getting the cuts. Right now a lot of our wind power supplies and parts are being built in other countries - China, I think, and Obama has been trying to remedy that. R's refused to sign his jobs bill, however, so they cut him off at the knees, and then campaigned on "no jobs."

I think people like 6:05 are mad because the truth is being told here. They are part of the group of Tea Partiers/Republicans that like to go around yelling about things that are not true. If you hit them with the truth in a forum where they cannot scream you down, and, therefore, the truth just sits there and stares them in the face, they have nothing to say. If their lies aren't working, what else can they do? Answer: Blame it on the Democrats, of course.

It's just a flat-out fact that the Republicans held up critical decisions like an agreement with Russia about nuclear weapons, along with extended unemployment benefits for those out of work, until Obama agreed to give the tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans, and not just everyone BUT them, like he wanted to do.

If telling the truth here, to contradict an untruth, is so offensive, and there is no argument in return, it just means that an untruth was corrected with the truth. That could only be good for America, right?

It is also true that Obama has had a jobs bill for many months, but the screamers were screaming about the deficit and not listening to anything that he was saying. Such as, you need to create jobs to take the country out of a recession and to start to bring down the deficit. Part of his jobs plan was to give money (in several different forms,) to companies who wanted to invest in green energy, the new car batteries, etc. Everybody screamed it down, then blasted him because there were no jobs and voted in the Republicans who screamed it down.

I'm the resident Democrat here that everyone is mad with, not Term. If you can prove me wrong with anything I have said about these issues, and the previous health care issues, then go for it.

If not, then you learned something, right? Again, that could only be good for our country. Quit being mad and appreciate the information.

Now, if you want to slam Obama about the illegals, I'll help you. He's gotten more illegals out of the country than anyone else has, but he is still planning on legalizing them. I'll even HELP you scream about THAT one.

Otherwise, this is still a blog that is mainly about the city, so if you are so mad, that you can't contribute to THAT, then that is just silly, isn't it?

I'll try to tone it down, Term, but I'm so sick of watching people ruin this country by not telling and/or listening to the truth, that I couldn't help it. And again, if I haven't told the truth about anything, and anyone can actually contradict me, go for it.

To 6:47, the resident democrat. Here is the problem, just because YOU believe in what Obama is doing you call it the truth and then put everyone else down for not agreeing with the "truth".

Some people do not believe what Obama is doing is the right thing and therefore your claim that they can't handle the truth is so far out of line that they feel you are not willing to see anyone elses point of view.

Think about it, just because you believe in it does not make it "right" or the "truth". If you have followed politicians for any length of time you will realize they can spin 20 different facts 20 different ways to make the public believe whatever suits them today!

Our local politicians are even good at that, think about how good the national level ones are at spinning the "facts" into what suits their purpose!

Although I didn't vote for the new Governor let's at least see his plans before we get in line to complain. The state has an 8 billion dollar hole to fill.

At December 30, 2010 at 12:37 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is the Resident Democrat to 5:33: Here's the thing: I've just watched the Republicans and their followers lie their way through another election. I'm almost 60 years old now, and have followed politics all my life. I started off fighting for civil rights (I'm white) when I was a kid.

I watched George W. Bush stand up there during one of his runs and tell people about HMO's and PPO's, and how they were going to be our saviors. I knew what he was NOT saying is that he had just made a deal with the devil - the devil being the insurance companies in this instance. I knew what he was not saying is that he was giving the ins. companies the power to make health care decisions for us, and that Americans were going to suffer and die.

When people are yelling about things that are not true, even when they are given the truth, that is bad for America. I know all about politicians and their spin, and I understand what you are saying. Point is, however, if even one point that I have stated as the truth is not the truth, then I welcome the debate. For example, you have people continuing to say that the government took over health care. They did not. Sometimes the truth IS the truth, and continuing to spin it as if it is not, is where the problem is.

Anyone is free to dispute anything I said. The problem is, nothing that I said is not the truth. I know it has been great fun for the Tea Partiers and the Republicans and their followers to run around screaming about death panels, etc., but it's hurting our country. I also just watched the Republicans stop Obama's jobs bill for many months while our country has been spiraling. Really, if anything I said is not a fact, you have the right to dispute it.

First, the tax credits for green energy were passed way back in 2005 and the only thing Obama has to do with it is extending them.

To the house democrat, was the extension of unemployment benefits held up by stubborn Republicans who believed in tax cuts across the board for everyone?, or was it held up by stubborn Democrats who didn't believe in tax cuts across the board for everyone?.

It depends what party you believe in, the TRUTH is it was held up by both sides that couldn't agree. Instead of getting worked up against one party or the other you should realize this is how our bipartisan system was designed to work.

Someday the American public will wake up and realize the real enemy in our political system is the growing amount of biased reporting in national and international news mediums.

Please remember that there are a lot of people that are intimidated by calling city hall or their council person...or don't have the ability to research online. Many don't have the resources or stomach to take the flak that you have. And thanks for digging up these details.

I'm starting to believe NOTHING will cause an uproar in Painesville. If I know it, it's a pretty good asumption that the powers that run Painesville know it.
Some of the things that go on in Painesville would never happen in other communities. Someone hit it on the head APATHY In truth that should be the name of this town.
11:59 If the Green Tax measures passed in 2005 when Bush was President why would the GOP be against passing them now? Were they wrong then or now?

You're right about apathy...but it isn't just in Painesville...it's nation-wide. A lot of people's opinions are only as good as the last person they listened to ...and unfortunately too often its one of the conglomerate news agencies that has a corporate agenda...or a politician. We aren't trained to critically think on our own (questioning the status quo isn't encouraged...you are a good example of what happens there). It's also true that small groups seem to be the ones leading the fight (for OR against an issue) . Most people don't take action until something makes them uncomfortable or seriously intrudes on their life in some way, but that's human nature.

To 11:59: The Republicans have held up every extenstion of unemployment benefits with one childish, political thing after the other. And you can check back to mid 2010 for his new jobs bill. I do agree with you that debating in our government is how it is supposed to work, but Republican tax cuts for the rich and their trickle-down economics have never worked to spur the economy. Never. That's part of what got us into this mess - the whole country almost collapsing. I also agree with you that the news media is a big part of the problem. I don't think that biased reporting is the biggest problem, although it is an unethical and dangerous and damaging problem. It used to be that politicians never even tried to tell these lies, because for one thing, the newspapers, etc., would have blown the lid of it and would have stated the facts clearly. The biggest problem, as I see it, however, in the news reporting, are the people that are lying, and that would be the Republicans and the people who support the Republicans. And it continues to continue. Reference some of the things on this blog that some people are still saying that are not true about the health care bill, etc.

To Term, the Republicans really wanted an "end of life decisions" section in their 2005 bill? And then when the D's put it in THIER bill, the R's attacked it as death panels?! In my opinion, the death panels were the HMO's. They (Bush) gave the insurance companies the right to make medical decisions for people and to say "no", based on nothing more than they didn't want to pay for it. People should have been demanding changes, but instead, when changes came, they opposed THAT.

These two statements seem to describe this blog to the letter. Also seem to describe the current political situation from top to bottom.

To debate, you need at least two viewpoints. To govern, you need to eventually come to some kind of agreement or work together for a solution to the problem. I see very little here. Chased or left. Term, you made the first statement in your 7:24 AM post.

All I am saying is a blog is by definition -- a Web site on which an individual or group of users produces an ongoing narrative.

A debate if you will. As you said, you are providing a place. Seems some forget it takes two or more view points to make a debate. I'm not saying you aren't posting most everything but some here don't like to hear anything but their own opinion. Both sides are guilty. It is just like dealing with politicians or congress. Where will this get us?

I still repeat my statement. How many have left because no one wants to listen or hear their side or opinion. One of these people might have something positive to contribute.

To 1:25: I believe that 7:29 was being factitious when he/she thanked Term for allegedly chasing all the Republicans from this sight, and then went on to say that we certainly do not need to be forced to listen to their viewpoint. I believe it was written by a disgruntled Republican, not a Democrat declaring victory.

It's MY opinion that the R's just want to yell (not to say all are yelling - some just don't have the facts because there has been so much yelling and not enough listening, and because it IS a complicated issue) about things that are not true, and since the Resident Democrat (me) has attempted to explain things, such as parts of the health care plan, then what is there left to say? They just want to keep railing against something that is attempting to give all Americans health care, save our health care system and save our government billions of dollars. And they want to keep saying things that are not true while they are doing it. It is no surprise to me, however, that this group of people would be so mad about someone telling the truth about what Obama is trying to accomplish, because that is not how most of them work. Mostly they say whatever outrageous thing they want to in an attempt to hurt the Democrats and their party, without caring a lick about what is actually going on. Our health care system is not sustainable as it is. It is crashing down all around us, but somehow the R's don't seem to get that. Obama is trying to save Republicans, too, and America and Americans need the R's to join him in an intelligent discussion as the difficult and complicated details are worked out over the next few years. Really - the life they save may be their own.

I'm up for a good debate. Term will let you say pretty much anything you want to. What's the matter, cat got your tongue?
