"ARE YOU TUFF ENOUGH" fab thunderbirds

As most of you know, I believe the future of Painesville is going to be tied to the continued success of Lake Erie College. That being said... is it a good idea to build four dormitory buildings on the "old" Harvey site?
The city's famed "Downtown Master Plan" shows no dorms or any other college buildings on that site. Will this be the first major casualty of the plan?
Surrounding this site are two nursing homes; Homestead I and II, a senior living community and numerous private homes in the immediate area. It also borders our 'historic district'. Also, the proposed site is not attached to the college property.
I realize the Board of Education is in a financial bind and could be facing an economic catastrophe. Is this the time to let that property go at a "fire sale" price. This is a one-time-only opportunity for the school board to maximize their return on that property. I just don't think they should give it away. Should something be built there that would not add to the city?
Maybe the college could come up with a plan to build an educational building that would only be used for classes instead of housing for students. Let them keep their students on campus where they would be the responsibility of the college.
I agree with Mr. Powers (school board member) that the land is being given away to an entity that can afford the real value of that property. I'm not really sure what the role of the Lake Port Authority is here but I do strongly believe that this is a very important decision that all parties involved should consider very carefully. These will be very tough decisions that all three entities will have to make. The results will be with us for along time.

Then term are you saying Kent State is not a value for Kent.. They have dorms off site and it seems to work there. The high school property is only worth what some one is willing to pay for it... Maybe Arlene Becks should buy it and start a hotel or she could build a grocery store..She has the vision and the ability to make it Happen!!!

To 6:42...you are comparing apples to oranges...We are not Kent, Ohio but a much smaller town that has to put fewer eggs in one basket. We'd best make sure it's a good fit. I would like to hear what the college's thoughts are on this; building design, security (for both residents and students), and exactly how they believe this will benefit Painesville. What I'd really like to see is a serious discussion between LEC and, not only the city, but residents too. I think Rita ought to have each council person come up with names of some citizens that would be willing and able to meet with college representatives. Let residents be fact-finders. Oh and Rita, if you should do something like this...don't make the same mistake as in the past...don't pay lip-service to the residents and then go along your merry micro-managing way. Are there any developers out there willing to build and run a dorm facility so tax dollars won't be lost? There's a ton of questions and ideas about this that should be investigated before everyone throws their hands up and pronounces dorms a very bad idea. And just so everyone knows, I live right across the street from the property in question and have a huge stake in what happens there. I'm keeping an open mind for now.

Talk to anyone on University Hts. council what they think of dorms?
Thats John Carrol University. Police issues, traffic, and parking.
What you must remember these are young people away from home in a community where no one knows them.
Who could care less about the neighbors.

Is it true they're going to house 800 kids in 4 high rise Dorms and pay no property taxes? No way!

To 6:42: Arlene Becks was a useless council person when she was in office the first time. She would always speak out at each meeting, even if it was something stupid, so it looked like she was doing her job, but she was useless. I certainly hope that people remember that, and do not vote her back in. There has to be someone better out there.

That was not true about Arlene.. She was always concerned. I remember the time when she said at a council meeting to" be careful driving because of the wet rain "!
she does care.. I saw that with my own two eyes>.

As far as Arlene Becks is concerned: Warning people to be careful driving does not necessarily mean that she was a good councilwoman, and she was not a good councilwoman.

Your right, Good council people would cost us millions in failed deals.

Anonymous 4:23am, I think they were making a joke. At least I HOPE they were, because that's what I took it as.

Thanks for the morning chuckle, Anonymous 5:56pm.

First off this levy could cost the average Painesville homeowner over $200.00 a year.
Then the board turns around and wants to approve letting the Harvey property go for $238,000?
Check out last Sundays N-H property section someone paid over $700,000 for property on Chestnut St. in Painesville?
Painesville should change it's name to Cedar Point. The people are being taken for a ride constantly.

Arlene may not have been the most effective council person to many of you but she wasn't a guaranteed "yes" vote...and with the present state of council that is a valuable (and rare) commodity.

Yea, Arlene what a joke..

I am hoping that we do not have to consider voting for Arlene Becks. It is true that she is not an automatic yes vote, but hopefully someone better will come along.

Concerning Flock, I am hoping the same thing about him. He has been a useless councilman all the years he has been in office, but lately he is actually starting to do his job and to do right by us. I am hoping someone better comes along than him, but if not, and he runs again, then he is better than the alternative.

Yes, let's not forget how useless Arlene Becks was when she was in office. I hope we have someone better who runs that we can vote for.

4:16 Whom do you believe is doing a good job on council?
Fountan? Hach? Werner? Who?

I'll go right down the list no,no,no.no.no,no,no.

I don't care how good or bad any of them speak, part of being a councilperson is supposed to be leading our city into the future.

None on there right now can even get anything important done much less lead themselves out of a paper bag.

Loved your photos last post of the recycling bins. I'm thinking that with the talk this post of high rise dorms, maybe they could be built from recycled materials... like the big pile of materials on the parking lot pictured in the BG of the photos... the big pile of brick and steel that used to be called "Holiday Inn".

Seems silly to build the dorms when there are so many vacant rooms sitting right there a block from public square...
