"BALL OF CONFUSION" temptations

Took in the Painesville School Board meeting this evening. Don't really know what I learned?
The board has decided to layoff Five para-professionals in February. I have no clue how much money this will save but it can't be much.
Looks like we can kiss Mr. Bulls Professional Learning Community good-by. For some reason explained to me, we cannot use "Race to the Top" grant to save that project.
Mr. Thompson suggested the finance committee get in gear to prepare to ask for another levy this May, along with an amount to ask for? Yet and the same time no one has a clue as to what the states budget cuts will be? How do they know what to ask for?
It seem we may have an agreement to sell the Harvey property on Washington St. to the Port Authority who will sell it to Lake Erie College for around $224,000? I don't know if it passed [either did the administration ] two yes, one no and one person abstaining, along with a member that left early? Guess they will have to check with their legal department. No one knows for sure if dorms are built on that property if they will be tax exempt?
A parent asked that it was important to save our AG classes, I only wish she explained what we should cut? What I worry about is this parent voting for this levy and then finding out that program was cut anyway. This is another group that has to show transparency.
On another note community groups and others using the building will have to make new arrangements as the buildings will be closed at 6:00pm after the first of the year.Wonder if the finance committee will be able to use the buildings after the first of the year to plan strategy?

The News-Herald made NO mention of another levy or schools closing early. Zero of selling selling any property??? What meeting did you say you attended?

Wonder if they will turn off the PARKING LOT LIGHTS ?
At all schools.
They are always on I guess,
10 pm on a Sat ?

There are 2 city lights on wood poles 1 on the east and 1 on the west side on Harvey High property that go on and off all night (bad bulbs) they were put up for Hobart Middle School, wonder who pays for them ?
Has no one seen them from the city or the schools ?
I think they charge the property owner $24.00 @ month each....
Not much of a cost I guess, but every little bit helps.

In the past few years the system has shown overall improvement in the illumination department. I remember a time when Chestnut Elementary parking lights were left on all day long.
Your paying the bill. 4:03
I haven't read the News-Herald yet but I guess the minutes will mention me? Was the N-H reporter at the meeting or just receive a press release?

I think the gifted program should be cut.Why should they be exempt? Why should we as taxpayers foot the bill for a handful of kids when there is a majority of others that need it. Have those parents considered paying for their only child to receive this benefit?
Like a pay to play, why shold everyone pay for sports if their kids dont play?

6:14 the AG program in Painesville Schools has been around since at least the 50's. Many students went through that programn that was national known and showcased. When I was growing up there were two classrooms at Lathrop school that I believe served the whole city.
Mr. Bull showed some graphs Monday night that were very interesting. The yellow part were students not yet reaching state minimums, red for students that were, along with blue that were exceeding state requirements. Sorry, I believe it is just as important to promote the blue as it is the yellow.
I got the impression that maybe some of those parents might leave the system. Lets be honest their childs future is important to them and if all the money is spent on ESL classes what the point of being in this system.
Sports, Band any of these add to a students education. I realize some students need to work, but you have your whole life to work. Here you can be apart of a team or group that if nothing else leaves you with good memories.
Presently I get the impression the board and administration are in a panic. They honestly don't know what the numbers will be yet. I have a hard time believing the new governor will dismantle education in the State of Ohio anymore than I believe throwing more money at the situation will make it better.
How do you call yourself Painesville Local Schools when 70% of your funds come from Columbus or Washington D.C.?
A side note when I stated school in 55' we had just as many students as we have now. We had ONE school bus driven my a Mr. Russell, period that was it.
Lake County Transportation had buses in the north and south end that for a dime you could ride to Harvey, oh and a half-pint of milk was 3 cents back then pack your lunch with a sandwich, apple and 12cent hostess cupcakes. Glory Days.

You gave more of the story than the paper did. Loved reading the comments posted on the papers web site. Seems like enough blame to go around. Teachers talk about being "professionals" how many professionals work for a union or only work less then 200 days a year?
I think government loves to disguise money ie. we can't use thias fund for this or that.
This whole town needs a do-over.

Anyone know how Hal threw the classifieds under his bus while keeping the bus drivers jobs?
Heard it happened sometime last week.

I don't believe in this round the administration had bus drivers on their mind. Next year when the school times change Hal won't be able to save the layoffs. I'm still trying to figure where Hal gets his property tax info? I was a a council meeting where they were told dorms are tax exempt yet Hal thinks they aren't will call the state to find out.

I counldn't make it to the Board Meeting. Could someone please explain the vote on the sale of the old HHS. If we don't know the tax [or non-tax] status of that property what's the rush?

Call the school board. The vote was 2 for, 1 against, 1 abstain, 1 member missing.[left meeting early. Did they meet the requirement for the vote to pass?
The rush might be the buyer wanting to know if they should move ahead with the project. According to the state if dorms are built on this site they will be tax exempt.

Blood Money? How is a 1% contractural raise blood money? They bargained for it in good faith. If you want to talk blood money, what about the $20,000.00 raise Mr. Roseberry got, what about the superintendents salary and perks? Don't forget the treasurer too. THAT'S BLOOD $$$$.

I heard the same thing, problem is the board along with the administration can't guarantee anything. They have no clue as to how much money the state is going to cut the system. There fore if someone asks a class or program will be spared the knife even with a levy passing sorry, no promises. If anyone wanted a guarantee passed June..... Good Luck.

who is Mr. Roseberry?

I believe Mr. Roseberry was head of the Transportation Department and became Business Manager for the school system with the retirement of Mr. Beiler.
