"YOU GOT PERSONALITY" lloyd price

"There was so much at stake, and it was personal". A comment made by Painesville City Schools Board member Andy Thompson.
Finally something Andy and I agree on, yes it was personal.
Mr. Thompson, as well as most of the board members, are very fine people. I wonder if any of them have figured out the problem yet?
Yes Mr. Thompson it was personal to me also. It was personal because: 1) where did you think most of the people in Painesville were going to come up with the money you were asking for?
Yes I took it personal; that the top nine or ten employees don't bother to live in the city that employs them... along with close to 80% of the rest of the city school employees. Just think if 30 more of them lived here we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Yes, I take it personal when our graduation rate dips to 65%, we have a 50% grading policy that no one I know believes in.
I take it personal when the system only reaches 2 of the 23 state mandates, and the rest of the county views Painesville schools as a failed system.
I take it personal that we have a superintendent that not only refuses to live here but also seems to be looking for a different job since he became the superintendent. (and what do we do besides reward him with raises and a free cell phone along with too many other perks to mention here).
You have to wonder if the Black community took it personal when they asked for one of the new schools be named after Thurgood Marshall? Along with the community wondering why you people killed the Hobart, Huntington, and Lathrop names and replaced them with names of trees? With your theory Harvey High should now be called Walnut High School.
Yes some parents might have taken it personal when White and Black children had to wait on their education while you translated to the Hispanic children? There has to be a better way.
Mr. Thompson there is a large under-current of reasons why that levy failed and yes, I guess they were all quite personal.

Many of the Hispanic students speak better English than white and black students do.

Remember, not all of the Hispanic kids are ESL students.

Maybe someone should do the math? 3000 students divided by 43 million dollars. It ain't personal it just costs to much for what we're getting.

When are the next elections for school board? I think that is where things need to start changing. Also we, as voters and taxpayers can continue to keep an eye on what they do in the mean-time so that when some fresh blood gets in they don't inherit a bigger mess than it already is.

Well.....what can be done at this exact moment? It may be possible to change administration for the future, but at this moment, there WILL be more people at the schools losing their jobs - and not necessarily people that SHOULD be let go. I hope the teachers enjoy that 1% raise and $200.00 for supplies that they refused to give up - even after the levy did not pass. The BOE is held accountable for a lot of this mess, but the teacher's union is not very open to discussions when approached by the BOE. Very, very sad:(

4:08 This is the first I've heard of the teachers excepting their 1% raise. It just proves my idea that there would be little sacrifice from the teachers. Yet another demand of money from the residents. 1% of $50,000 is only $500.00 I guess some need this more than keeping their fellow colleagues in a job? I guess I can forget any wage reduction, so be it.

Yes there is very little sacrifice and commitment from this group.
I never felt Dr. Hanlon had made a commitment to the taxpayers of Painesville. He seemed to always looking for that greener pasture.

Someone mentioned to me the new board member Mr. Powers rejected the sale of the old Harvey property by the Port Authority who is acting like a middleman to purchase the land for Lake Erie College.I believe you were at the meeting is this true?

Of course the teachers are not too concerned for their jobs. I heard this comment last year - "Bottom line, what are the schools for? For children to learn and it's the teachers who teach".
Therefore the rest must just be chopped liver and are all expendable.

Conferences were last night at the middle school. Why were lockers plastered with handmade posters in English and Spanish?
It looked like maybe an English assignment (though it coulda been a Spanish one) with word definitions.
Why, Why, Why, are they promoting any Spanish language activities within that school? English Only.

Maybe we could hire New Jersey Gov. Chris Christy to do an intervention. He is cleaning house with teacher unions and is extremely popular. There school system is being watched very closely and is succeeding, the rest of the country will get on this train.

Painesville teachers, enjoy your 1% and $200 supply stipend because change is coming to a neighborhood near your desk!

I would think teachers would want the support staff as wouldn't it make their job a bit easier? This doesn't make any sense, at least to me.

We had a good parent run for school board and he was defeated. He needed help! Where the hell was everybody?

Until this school system gets turned around house values will never rebound here.

Our neighbors send their kids to the township and laugh when I ask if they will send their kids to City schools.
"We want better for our kids, why would we send them to city schools?"

that's what this community if fighting........

I live right next door to one. Luis (age 12) speaks perfect English with no hint of an accent. Dad speaks mostly Spanish, but his English has been getting better since they moved in. Mom speaks English, has a good job, and takes care of business. The yard is always tidy and their cars are always washed.

Now that I think about it, Luis could probably compose his sentences a little better than you. At the very least, he'd know that "Hispanic's" shouldn't be apostrophized. It's just "Hispanics".

I'm not trying to start a race war here, but let's give some credit where due to the folks who are doing things the right way, like my next-door neighbors.

I think about this and wish we could kick people in the butt to get out and support the people that could make a difference.

The school board is not the only place either, look at the council elections, John and Tony out while the people elected Hada again and his school puppet buddy Foder.

I sometimes think the majority of the residents in this city deserve what they are getting because they have no clue what is going on.

The sad part is I have watched for years as others like Elaine, etc. have tried to get elected to break up this Hada group and they all get disgusted and end up leaving the city for good. We are all going to wake up some day and discover we have no good choices, they have all left because of lack of support.

During the last election I listened to people on this blog say things about Steve, John, Tony like to make a difference they had to be perfect and they weren't therefore they got torn down and bad mouthed. You think the Hada supporters do that to him?

5:14 I don't believe Mr. Powers doesn't want the land sold only that we should hang on to it for a while? Maybe a better offer from someone else? That sale was reported to be around $235,000.00 and it seemed low to me also. Then again in these financial times with property values heading south that just may be the going rate?
I believe if the schools keep it for a certain time they will have to pay property taxes? [like paying yourself]
Now someone tell me where I can get the facts that the teachers accepted their 1% raise? Was there a press release? Was a vote taken?

At December 10, 2010 at 8:53 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who does Mr. Powers have in mind? Unless he has a buyer, he should sell that property now.

If this school system is laying off people by seniority, will teacher aides that are fluent in Spanish, but have less seniority then other's be kept?
Meaning aides who only speak English are at a disadvantage?

At December 10, 2010 at 7:35 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is there any truth to this one?
Administration at the board office don't their retirement out of their pocket? It is paid for not by them but by the school board which comes from our taxpayer dollars. Does anyone realize how much could go back into the system if they gave this up? And I won't buy "it's in their contract" because they could very well give it up on their own but they are all too selfish. Just remember Mr. Roseberry got himself a nice 20,000.00 raise.

At December 10, 2010 at 7:39 PM , Anonymous Anon said...

The layoffs are not being done by seniority nor by the contract. What has happened is they come in and say "your job is being done away with now you can choose this, this or this position, take it or leave it and you have till tomorrow morning to let us know".
Since it's not really a rif they have bullied everyone.

At December 11, 2010 at 4:52 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

To 4:03,

You are correct to a point. If a non-bilingual person with high seniority is layed off, they can bump a bilingual (ELL) aide of less seniority - but only IF they can perform that job. So, the ELL aides end up being saved not due to seniority, but for having bilingual skills. They are not exempt from the bumping process. Seems unfair, but that's just the way it works out. Rosetta Stone anyone?

I rememember a family that came here in the 70's from Vietnam. Nice people, the children had a good grasp of English when they ARRIVED here. The school system did not have any kind language aides at the time. Funny though, the young man of that family that was my classmate grew up and is successful now, as are most of his siblings. Next time I see him, I'll ask how he first learned English, I'm interested to know.

The teachers 1% raises was a part of a larger raise I think 4% and they voted to take it over a period of time to help the schools, also most teachers spend a lot more then $200.00 on supplies over a year, I saw a report on TV about this, some teachers pay around 800.00 to 1200 a year out of there own pockets.

First and foremost, Caps Lock is not necessary. I can read just fine without the capital letters. Secondly, my name is spelled "Adam" and my neighbor's son's name is spelled "Luis". Helpful hint: if you're going to make a point, you should use correct capitalization and spell names correctly.

As far as my neighbor's immigration status is concerned, if you have this information I can only guess that you are also one of my neighbors. I haven't had any reason yet to worry about any of my neighbors, including the next-door ones. We all seem to watch out for each other and (mostly) get along. Why upset the apple cart? I also don't interfere with anyone's affairs. If you are really my neighbor, you know I don't meddle in my neighbors' business. But come chat with me sometime, I'd love to know more. I'll pour you a cold beer.

I've got more questions than answers about the old HHS property. At the BOE meeting Mr Powers asked about wheather property taxes would be paid on LEC Dormatories. Dr Hanlon and other Board member reasured him that property taxes would be paid. At the last council meeting, J.M. asked The C.M. a similiar question. Rita McMahon said LEC wouldn't pay property taxes on dorms. Mr Fodor chimed in that the maintence crew would pay income tax [big deal]. It should be a top priority of the School Board and the City Council to sell that property to a tax generating venture. That was the goal and objective spelled out in the Comprehensive Plan.

I know of almost the same family. He attends a class in school that "helps" him at home. Since his father does not speak English, yet he speaks perfect English, the class is to help him speak Spanish to his Dad.
Now if that isnt some backward thinking going on in school, I dont know what is!

By Sue Karel
Correspondent@News-Herald.com

A local businessman's attempt to open an Internet café in Concord Township was recently denied by the community's Board of Zoning Appeals, and now his existing café in nearby Painesville Township may soon be closed.

Douglas Hickey, who lives in Concord, operates the Win Zone in Painesville Township and attempted to open a similar business in Concord. Customers at the Win Zone pay for Internet access to games of chance.

Hickey had told Concord's board that his clientele are primarily age 50 and older and that they enjoy socializing at his Painesville Township business. He argued that the Concord community would enjoy similar benefits.

"Retirees would benefit from the social aspects of this operation," Hickey said.

But Internet cafés are not a permitted or conditional use in Concord Plaza, the planned location of Hickey's business, and the board voted unanimously to deny a variance.

Hickey has been notified by Painesville Township zoning inspector Rich Constantine that his occupancy permit was being revoked for the Win Zone located at 1657 Mentor Ave.

According to Constantine, the zoning and occupancy permit that was granted in February, when the township did not have a zoning inspector, indicated that his business consisted of "Internet use, cellular sales, phone cards, bill payment services, fax services, copy services."

"It appeared to be a routine business application," said Constantine, "all the listed activities are allowed in that zoning district."

However, Win Zone also has "sweepstakes" terminals and Constantine felt they did not fall within the description on Hickey's application so he said that the terminals needed to be removed. When they were not, the township ordered the business closed.

Hickey has filed an appeal, which will be heard by that community's Board of Zoning Appeals at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the township's administration building, 55 Nye Road
