"TONIGHT, TONIGHT"

Don't forget Tuesday August 4,2009 in "National Night Out" The City of Painesville will have a Classic Car Show, K-9 demonstrations, Different Police and Fire Equipment on display, plus a DJ. Its hard to believe its already August, school and football are less then a month away. On another note the slaugnter that was the Cleveland Indian season is almost over. Some reporters are calling Progressive Field, Regressive Field. Trading two Cy Young winners two years in a row has to be some strange new record. Then I get to read about Braylon Edwards? GO BLUE!

Interesting, City council by charter is non partisan and Lori Dinallo fundraiser is on both Lake County and Ohio GOP sites.

Yes, and to be fair Arlene Becks was at the Dems. Tent during Party in the Park. Lets all be honest and admit the days of Painesville Council being non-partisan are long gone. It does make for some interesting bedfellows? You have to wonder if the voters of Painesville care one way or the other? I don't I vote the person.

Maybe what the voters of Painesville should care about is the moral makeup of someone who wants to run our city and then stretches and bends the rules a hundred different ways to get that position.

it has happened for a few elections in a row now, at what point can someone challenge that they are not living up to our charter?

Since we seem to object to Republicans, Democrats, people who have a certain job or profession, then just who should run for council?????

Lori is a Republican and a central committee member and Arlene is a Democrat and officer in the Lake County Democratic Party.

These two people are at least somewhat knowledgeable and involved in our community. If these people aren't qualified to run then who is???

Maybe we can get another homeless person to run. How about getting Painesville Municipal Court to sentence people to serving time on city council. We also have a large migrant population so why not have someone from another country on council.

Sound stupid. Yes, but if you want to say who can or can't run just because of his or hers job or political party then the list above is what is left. Let's face it, anyone qualified to serve on council has a job, is politically active member of our community, and other wise involved in our community.

Painesville is mostly Democratic and as Term said, why is it wrong to have a notice for Lori on the Republican web site if it is OK for Arlene to be at the Democratic booth in Party in the Park. People voted for change last election. How's it going so far? Seems to me we need to focus more on the person running than the party he or she belongs too. People complain council just blindly goes along with CM or just looks at one proposal for say the hospital site. Reminds me of Congress passing the stimulus package without reading it.

Time to take a serious look at who is running and make some serious choices as to what is best for Painesville.

I agree, vote the person. But, this non-partisan thing has been a controversial problem all over this country. There are many other positions that are supposed to be non-partisan like some judges, school boards, etc.

The idea behind it I think was originally meant to be that someone was making decisions based on what is right and not what is a Party agenda.

The non-partisan idea has been gutted to the point all it means is a person can't have a D or R after their name.

So for those of you who think it means nothing because you vote the person, how would you feel if your best person lost because a Party did everything it could to elect someone else except put the R or D behind their name? Is that right?

Maybe political partys feel that local elections are like a farm system, this is where you groom your future candidates for county, state, or even a federal position. I realize this is a matter of free speech and theres not much that can be done about it. Both Badger and the above comment make valid points. I guess that means you have to be an informed voter. In the last election a Democratic councilman gave alot of help to a Republican councilman to help retain his seat. I don't think party politics were a concern to the incumbents. Keeping a block of votes in your camp is.

If Council President Hada ever loses his four vote majority, we will only then find out how the city has been run for the last 20 years. Probably we would get a new City Manager, Law Director, and Council President. This bunch that has been around forever are starting to get stale. The administration work on the best use for the hospital should let people realize how lazy everyone at city hall has become.

It should be some kind of malfeses that Robert Fountain still sits on council, receive a check for doing nothing. As a ward 3 resident I feel bad the man is ill. He was ill when he ran for council last election. What was so important to holding on to that seat. Without proof I will keep the reasons I've heard to myself. The basements are still flooding in my neighborhood and he will not return my calls.During the last election Joe Hada personally suggested I retain Mr. Fountain will he please explain why?
I really don't care if someone is an D or an R just as long as they do there jobs.
Up to my neck with the City of Painesville.

remember that folks, when you go to the polls in nov. vote for the person that you think will make a positive influence for the city. not whether or not they are republican or democrate. it really doesn't matter to me what they are, as long as they do a good job for the people of painesville. we have some new people coming into this election this fall. in my opinion, the only 2 that are in my mind to even consider, are john murphy and lori dinallo. some new blood in the council. that is what this city needs very badly. some new ideas are very badly needed. so people if you want some changes in this city ,for you and your family, don't sit on your royal ash, VOTE, VOTE, VOTE. AND VOTE LIKE YOUR TOMMORROW IS AT STAKE, BECAUSE IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!! A VERY VERY VERY CONCERNED CITIZEN THAT WAS GOING TO RUN FOR COUNCIL, BUT DECIDED NOT TO, AND WILL LEAVE IT TO JOHN AND LORI TO DO THE JOB.

At August 4, 2009 at 7:50 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am very concerned about Ms. Dinallo on council as the general feeling is she has been hand picked by Ms Delemotte as her replacement. If this is true we will not be getting more of the same.

Don't care if she is R or D just feel we desperately need a change on council to move this city forward.

John & Lori
Don't think so, if you check them out you will see why.

And don't forget Mr. Fountain will be replaced by Mr Hada, just before the vote.

I agree with the comment from the ward 3 resident, we have no active councilperson. I have lived in Painesville over 30 years and have always lived in the same house in that ward. We have no one to thank but Joe Hada for not having a representative on council. Joe has voted for many things I just don't think are in the best interests of Painesville. The tax hike that would have come with the 3.9 charter change,Amp-Ohio coal plant, and recently the housing for the hospital site. His reasoning for building that downtown made no sense to my neighbors and myself. Now he openly attacks fellow councilmen in public. and wants them to explain their votes to him? Maybe 28 years of service is about enough to expect from one person. As for Mrs. DiNallo who is her employer? Mr. Werners also? Who has a wife sitting on the school board that can make their lives very difficult? Maybe that explains Mr. Werner changes? Lets be carefull about mixing these to government bodys together.

Went to Veterans Park last night. Viewed the new Fire Truck, and as much as I hate to admit it, what a waste of money! I feel like jumping off a cliff to at least justify the purchase.

Don't forget James Fedor, he's running to. Thats all the school employees that live in the city. To bad most of school employees can't vote for them. Someone should come up with a slogan Dr. Hanlon will not vote for any of his fellow employees.

What reason would Dr. Hanlon give for not voting for school system employees? He hired and directs most of them.

Hanlon can't vote for them since he doesn't live in Painesville. that's the point.

Again, eliminating candidates for their job.

What I'd like to know is how do the various people signed Anonymous expect Dr. Hanlon to vote for someone running for Painesville City Council if he lives in Mentor.

Just what we need are these informed voters.

in regard to post 927 above, for calarification,dr. hanlon cannot vote for a city council candiate because he does not live in the city. this is also true of the majority of the city employees that live outside of the city, they can't vote for council candiates, either. for your information

It has been mentioned here several times that council is a non-partisan position. In theory that is true. In reality, almost all candidates belong to some party. I disagree with Term when he says council races are a farm system for the political parties. I would venture to say that running for council costs in the neighborhood of $3000 to $5000. Most of the candidates are only known in their local community. This is a far cry from the cost of running for county, state or federal office much less President of the United States. I doubt any current or future council members would have the money or much of a chance at getting elected to one of these offices. County races cost in the tens of thousands and even more as you go up the ladder. Everyone starts somewhere. School board and city council elections are usually a starting point followed by maybe a city mayor. Asking for advice from a party is not much different than asking a friend for help in one of these elections. Also, there are very strict rules in running for office, non-partisan or not, concerning petitions and campaign finances. Most first time candidates don't know all of these and need to get advice somewhere.

Politics and political parties are just part of the election process. In the upcoming election of council at large seats, political party means far less since we are voting for three people. Makes it harder to vote a straight ticket since the top three are the ones elected.

I have one question for Term and some others. Can you name one time either party tried to influence a vote at council? Please give us an example. Just being mentioned on a web site or at a political booth or belonging to a certain party doesn't influence councils vote. I believe it is more of a personality issue or power struggle that seem to dictate how city council votes.

Just my opinion.
