******************************************************************************

You know that talk is cheap
And those rumors ain't nice

The old saying "there's never one around when you need one"

Dropped into our local school board meeting last evening learned a lot of new stuff.

Jaylin Shepp one of our Writer's of the Week gave a research paper "The Clever Fox" it can be viewed online at the PCLS site she is a 5th grader at Chestnut.

Superintendent Sheperd   and Coach Coffee presented Certificates Honoring Heritage Athlete's

Also Harvey wrestler Logan Smith for being CVC 126 pound Champion.

Trans-gender student issues came up, something people of my age group never had to deal  with or even discussed . Not only bathroom issues but what about overnight field trips?  There was a time school only concerns were reading, writing and arithmetic's it's become a very complicated world.

Substitute teacher issues were discussed. Seem in the last school year the system had a need for 2,711 substitute teacher days, 1,534 were sick days. the others were personnel days. at times even the Superintendent  has even been called into classroom duties?  Teachers are scheduled for less than 190 days a year and with that a they seem to be a  very sickly bunch? As far as the personnel days that should  be done by seniority with a cap on how many out on a certain day? This entitlement grants (3) days of paid personal leave each year. One (1) of the three (3) days shall be unrestricted. As someone who worked his whole life in the private sector I will not comment on this subject.

Resolution Recognizing The Responsibly Of The Painesville City Schools To Affirmatively Further Fair Housing (AFFH)  I don't know? What I do know is if the  overall number's don't go up within the school district the housing market in Painesville will suffer further. I don't believe many of you realize how the two are so closely  connected.

Central YMCA has assured the board that additional funding was found for PCLS summer program and will again be available this year. Seems like the Y is going to be an awful busy place this summer?

Rumors? I questioned the Board about the administration going outside the Painesville Police Department for an SRO officer at Heritage Middle School? Seems after meeting with our city administration the school administration put out feelers if the Lake County Sherriff Department or Lake Metroparks were interested?  As a resident I'm not quite buying this? And I questioned them "is there something we don't know that you could share with us?" No it seems the main obstacle is that that City of Painesville not the school system has to write the grant for funding this officer and that the city administration doesn't have a grant writer. The school treasurer would be willing to help the city with the grant writing. Also the claim was made that presently Painesville Police do not have the staffing to put an officer at Heritage? To council lady Jenkins do you understand now why I kept bring this up at city council meetings?

The school board also want's to incorporate along with an SRO officer to also be a DARE officer on the subject of ever increasing drug use in our community. Just me, but get that DARE officer into the elementary schools this world is changing fast! A board member also wanted to make sure an SRO officer liked children? That question is like asking a K9 officer if they like dogs isn't it? Going into this field pretty much makes that issue clear.

I explained I didn't have much faith in this. Because first we have PPD at Harvey and say a Park Ranger at Heritage if the police need to be called who do you call? Well of course Painesville Police Department?  This along with my statement These are Painesville schools, with Painesville students that should be protected by Painesville Police. Along with keeping our money in our city.

How did a simple request get this complicated? I suggest Mr. Sheperd, Mr. Haffa, Mr. Carson and Police Chief Powalie sit down and work this out before the next school year starts. There are not many successful operations in our city and schools as the SRO officer Ponder at Harvey, please build on this  success.

A friend passed a book on to me it is an autobiography Junior Sines Scared as Hell. The story starts in the hills of West Virginia to serving with the 82 Airborne coming to Cleveland and moving to Painesville where he married his wife Betty settling in Perry and having a very successful gas and oil business. It was co-written by a Painesville resident Michael Urban. Just a good read how a man came from nothing to something. His most proud achievement was not the company he built but that he succeeded without hurting or exploiting his fellow man. Interesting read.

Going outside Painesville? This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard yet! Wonder how they would have sold this idea?
Maybe citizens should go outside the city to find more competent and qualified board members?
I agree there's more here then meets the eye.

The City has never had "a grant writer", yet they have written many grant request and have received their fair share. I heard that our Police Chief is currently asking for a grant to fund body cameras for our policemen. Great news. I also heard that if they can't get a full grant to covert cost, the Administration wants to revisit a police levy. Council is unsure [surprise, are they sure of anything?]. I'm not crazy about levies, and I would never support a new police levy if it didn't include a SRO Officer at the Middle School.

Term, You're right. An SRO at the middle school isn't that complicated. There must be more to this story. Watch the City Council meetings and Board of Education meetings. The superintendent can't get his story straight. He tells Council he doesn't need an SRO and he tells BOE he does. Which is it? No wonder people say he can't be trusted.

11:34 I never heard of the superintendent address council He did talk to a member. And your right what kind of message does it leave with the community when you want other law enforcement agency's if they have an interest? To me and just me,, this seems like a slap in the face to the PPD. And yes there's more going on here than meets the eye!
Maybe who the officer answer's to?

The superintendent is a joke. He has created a top heavy district when the real changes need to be made at the school level. He has burned bridges with the juvenile court system as well as the police department. This person has been here for 3 years and has went into the totally opposite direction than we need to be heading. It will take the entire community of Painesville to change our school aystem, but he wishes to remove any outside eyes to hide the inadequacy of his leadership. He wants to cover up any negatives rather than deal with them. The middle school is a mess and the students are in an unsafe environment not to mention the abuse the teachers have to endure from the students and administration. There are drugs and violence at our middle school and it is being covered up. The teachers are looking elsewhere for work and administration hasn't batted an eye. It is lie after lie with this guy. From hiring a 2nd PR person to be his personal god knows what, under the guise that the current one is retiring, which was never discussed to the situation with the police chief. I don't know about anyone else, but we got it wrong when we got him. I guess it was better than the first choice who just happened to end up in prison. The one true leader that we have in this district is the high school principal who has shown evidence as the graduation rate has risen 10% under him. Yet we will let him walk away eventually although he has a track record of turning schools around. Shepard attends his public interest groups during the work day. Maybe start a flower club at the board office to get him a little more focused. Oh, by the way, has anyone seen the shape that our grounds are in? This is all the responsibility of one person. Makes no sense, but I guess that's what you get when you hire a person who is by no means qualified and is not degreed to head up the facilities department. He goes from washing buses to overseeing the whole department. Another example of Shepard ' great leadership. He should really consider leaving before he totally erases any progress we have the potential to make. He is alienating our school system from the rest of our city and will smile in your face and stab you in the back. The middle school is out of control and has been since DeAngelis has taken over. My daughter is considering moving her children out for safety reasons, not academics. This is not what you would call an institution of education. It seems to be more like an institution of rehabilitation (prison) with what goes on there. A change is needed and the board is afraid to make that change. Must be an inconvenience to them to deal with the needs of our children and their education. They seem to be yes men who rubber stamp anything he says. It's funny how they made so many promises when running for office but nothing has shown them to be as ineffective as those in the past. Praying that something changes.

8:27 I appreciate your comment. But until teachers, and other parents share this publicly with a board member's nothing will change. I myself will not let my granddaughter attend Heritage if there is no PPD SRO officer hired for that position. That's about the strongest statement I can make. I think you are making a mistake if you believe all board members feel the way you describe them? I will post a comment on something Superintendent Sheperd made at a public meeting as well as keeping all of you informed of Home sales and prices in just the PCLS district.
I will agree the schools are top heavy with administrator's and I believe the changes will not come from Jackson St. but in the classrooms.
Yes Principal McWreth was my first choice but seems ever one wanted experience? I believe that Mr. Sheperd deserved a fair shake that said I don't see much of an improvement and I do know morale is low system wide. Have you noticed none of these Super's ever retire they jut move to a different school system? They seem like a close knit bunch?

Didnt I read here about repercussion from the city to its residents? So, why would you think any parent or employee would make a stand against the school? Same reason. I feel the choice for superintendent was alright. Mr Shepard is a peach compared to the ruthless Dr Hanlon. So you think the middle school is administrations fault? Parents, look in the mirror. You think the high school is any better? Think again. There are 2 buildings handling behavior differently. One up front and the other hidden. A ten percent hike in graduates? What figure is that? If there are 200 to a class and only 130 graduated? Is this something to be happy about? High school parents need to look in the mirror also. Out of the entire high school, there were roughly 35-40 parents that showed up at the last conference held. That's sad, bad parenting and parents that don't care but are the first say its everyone elses fault their child did not pass. The board has a no cell phone policy but it is ignored at Harvey (a constant battle with my child to keep it put away or I will take it away) The attitude there is we cant stop them, so might as well let them anyway. As for superintendents not retiring, didnt Hanlon say he was retiring to have more time then got hired in Chardon. (BTW the residents dont like him there either) Again, its like someone said, its easier to settle for what we have leading the city and schools than to search for the best candidate. Yes, we are stuck with Carson too.
