"DOWNTOWN" petula clark

Downtown, everything's waiting for you

Me I'm looking for more reasons to go downtown?

In Tuesday 02/09/16 was above the fold;

Organization Receives National Accreditation

Heritage Ohio has recognized the Downtown Painesville Organization as a National Main Street Organization.

Our Executive Director David Polakowski claims this is a huge accomplishment. "It gives us credibility."

So do we get a Plaque? $1.4 in grant and general fund money and let's not forget the $175,000 that council has bestowed on the Downtown Organizationover the past few years.

Let me be selfish for a moment how does all this benefit the average Painesville resident? What exactly has been accomplished? Where are these businesses lining up to do business in our downtown?

Dollar for dollar I believe this is a very poor investment that only benefits a few people and they know who they are.

I view this the same way as a telephone scam operates, give us money and watch how we accomplish money to disappear!

There has not been one thing done in the last five years to make a good reason for 1) locate a business here,2) to spend more money here. The truth hurts!

I know I sound like a non-beliver in all this but that money could have been used in a more constructive way.

I'd like to hear the reasoning in this statement;

"We promote our businesses in Painesville as a whole, and we want to keep encouraging people to shop local," he said "For every $100 a year spent locally helps build the community by $3 million."
Must be the same people who pay us millions to keep the electric power plant operational?

Until someone in that organization convinces some anchor story to move here this is it!

On another front;

The rumor going around town is that some residents oppose the building of the new jail on the northside of Erie St. to Jackson St. So where put it? High Pointe Centre? Look somehow we have just about managed to chase everyone else out of town why not the Sheriff Department? I wonder in income tax what that department and jail pay  to our city? Wish carefully.

You know every time I see Chris Christy I think of  Bobby Baccalieni  from the Soprano's. You know the guy who married Tony's sister. And Tony busted his balls for playing with trains?
It appers Chris can go back to acting? He did accomplish to take Marco out along with himself.

You know, TERM, I disagree immensely with probably 99% of what you say. But today I actually agree with you. The Downtown Painesville Organization is a waste of city funds. The city pays the Director's salary and gives additional funding through the year. And it accomplishes nothing that benefits Painesville as a whole. That money could have been put to use countless ways that would have aided Painesville citizens.

I hadn't heard about people objecting to the site of the new jail. What is their reasoning? It is just across the street from the current jail. It seems a logical location. I just can't think why it would be objected to, unless it is the folks living on the North side of Jackson Street across from where the jail will be.

I wouldn't say that I want a new jail to go on the old hospital site BUT I don't want the jail to go in the proposed location on E Erie St either.
The current jail is FAR too tall and looks completely out of place.
If the new jail needs to be that high, move it to an area where the zoning allows it and where people coming into the City don't have to see it. For me, it is quite embarrassing that the most dominant structure on the City skyline is a jail/prison.
I really never understood how that was allowed to be built that tall when it was constructed.

This bring to mind something else.
A tax payer built building that lasts only 30 years??
HTH did that happen?
The previous jail lasted forever but one constructed with state of the art methods lasts 30 years?
I would hope that regardless of where the new jail is built, the contractors have their feet held to a fire by the Sheriff and the Commissioners concerning the proper construction of the building.
This is just pathetic.

91% is better then never?
9:48/10:40 So i am to believe that the mainobjection to this building is the number of stories?
The new location is down from Erie St. but I wonder is there a savings by going up instead of out?
Now the 30 year old jail. The county commissioners want a 'new' jail. I believe there was aq study done on what it would cost to repair the present jail. That study as well as all recommendations should be made public so as the taxpayers can decide which way they want to go. I have heard the figure of 3 million to do repairs to the present jail?
Chances are you will have different commissioners as well as sheriff's in 30 years.

The number of stories is certainly an issue but why do we need to have a prison in the City?
If a new one needs to be built, move it to another location.
Blase Nemeth Rd where the Sheriff has/had a facility would be a great choice.

Gee, no kidding the people in office will be different but that kind of thinking is exactly what ears to where we are with the current jail. You can justify a building like lasting only 30 years?

$3M to make repairs is still a LOT less expensive than a new building. Sounds to me like they hired a favorable building consultant to get the result they wanted.

1First it's where the court's are. Second Painesville must tells us what the cost in lost revenue the city will face. Then again I have to ask what do you see as a future for commercial and businesses for Painesville. We have chased the Hospital out, all the automobile dealers, no grocery stores,or department stores? It appears you seem to believe the jail is a negative?
There was even talk of Painesville Police being housed in the new building?

Well, I can't say that I think of a jail as a "positive" for the City. You do?

What difference does the location of the Court make? I would imagine most prisoners are arraigned by video conferencing. If that is the case, the jail can be anywhere. The eliminates one of your reasons for the new jail to be built in the City.

All of the businesses that you say "we" have chased out is not entirely accurate. The City simply could not support those businesses the way that (for example) Mentor can. Look at the number of restaurants in other places compared to Painesville.
Department stores simply opened in the Great Lakes Mall and never came back.

I would rather the City look to bring in new businesses to replace lost income taxes rather than build another jail.

1:27 You sound like your stuck in the 60's someplace. You seem to believe Painesville is on an upward trend. I don't have a problem with the jail being located in the city. The city couldn't support? We had our own utilities odd how Willoughby managed with the Mall? I believe it was poor leadership? Yes we have chased many out of Painesvilloe. Again what and how will Painesville replace the revenue from the Sheriff department leaving?

Shame on all you negative nellies who arent in favor of a new jail. How dare you not agree and be on Term side? I agree with many of you though, how can a new jail be needed after only 30 years? Shoddy workmanship, poor quality and sheriff Dan gets what sheriff Dan wants. The fact that another beautiful old home (OH cooperative extension) may fall to the wrecking ball on a few peoples whim. I agree, move em' out to the township. We need someone pro-active in this city to bring decent shopping to us. But how many years has community development sat to collect a big fat paycheck without bringing NOTHING to the table.

I believe the people at Heisley Point are quite unhappy with all the train traffic and double sump pumps running continuously so how about there? They could be bought out, move on and the jail could move in......

Video arraignment is pretty common. But trials are not done with video. I don't want to read about shoot outs on the road when prisoners are transported to court. I say build it where its planned and make sure there is a tunnel to the court house in the plans. I, am also pretty miffed about the 30 year old building. And the brand new humpy concrete on route 2 Westbound. Slow down a bit and its like a kiddy ride at the park.

Lake County was not the only Ohio county stuck with a bad jail. Back in the early 90's when Governor Voinovich was in office he created programs to encourage counties to build new jail facilities and then steered them towards his brothers construction firm, The V Group. A good number of those jails have since been found to have numerous design issues and like ours are in need of replacement.

The jail is jobs and much needed income tax for Painesville as well as making the most since to be near the court for transporting prisoners for trial. I have heard rumors that they are looking at designs for a facility with a lower profile with long hallways for better monitoring.

6:07/ 5:00 Agreed!
6:17 Really Ha Ha
5:39 If you dish it out be ready to take it.
I do! I really don't care where they put the jail. I do get a charge how some of you seem to be above locating it in town.
Can't wait to hear the police chief complain how much time it takes his officers to transport to the new jail? First the hospital and now the jail.

You seem to think that income taxes from workers at the jail will keep the City solvent.
Aside from tax revenue, you haven't listed a single reason for keeping the jail in downtown.
Do you have any?
Stuck in the '60's? Hardly. However we aren't progressing if we keep making the same mistakes over and over.

Stuck in the 60's? You above all people are saying that? You are never one to move on past situations yet you say that about your guests commenting on the post? I too don't want that beautiful co-op building torn down. They should find temp housing for the criminals and rebuild in the same site and go underground. In another 30 years most of us wont be around to see another replacement.
