" TIMEOF THE SEASON" zombies

IT'S GETTING TO BE THAT TIME OF YEAR!

BACK TO SCHOOL!

Received an interesting letter from our local school district as well as Crossroads;

Dear Parent/Guardian

Painesville City School District and Crossroads have partnered to establish a student assistance and outreach program. The SOAR Program (Student Outreach, Assistance and Resource Program) is offered in all five schools in the Painesville City School District. The purpose of this program is to provide support, outreach, and resources to students and families within the school district to improve the overall social, emotional, behavioral and academic functioning. Services will be provided by a qualified Crossroads Provider.

If you do NOT want your child to be considered for these supports and services, please complete the bottom portion of this form to OPT OUT and return this form to your child's school. If you do not return this form then your child will be able to participate in Crossroad services, if needed.
PLEASE NOTE that if at any time a Crossroads provider is involved or speaks with your child for any reason, you will be contacted and a permission form will need to be signed if further contacts are necessary.

We are excited to be able to offer additional supports to the students of Painesville City Schools. Should you have any questions or concerns, you may contact your child's Guidance Counselor and they will be able to answer any questions or direct you to the Crossroads staff assigned to your child's building to assist you.

The letter was left unsigned with English on one side and Spanish on the other.

First question is PCLC the only district being offered this?

Who bears the cost?

Is this money better spent having a full time SRO officer at Heritage? ( yes one is badly needed)
This program has worked wonders at Harvey.

I'm still concerned about PCLS new program to address 'gifted students'

I don't know enough about what is to be accomplished with this program. Any thoughts out there?

As I always say, "follow the money".

Who is Crossroads and how are they funded?
Are only certain "select" students involved?
What the the end result of this program supposed to be?
How will results be measured?
What standards are changed as a result of this program?
How much do members of the School Board know about this?

The questions go on and on but you get the idea.

Free Free Free. I am sure there are said ones that can use a hand up. ENOUGH already. Free backpacks, school supplies, free hair cuts, free shoes, free uniforms, clothes, coats, sox & underware. Free breakfast and lunch for school months and the summer. How many places take collections for students in Painesville? How many donations because there is more than 50 percent poverty in Painesville? All this enabling has created a monster. By not being held accountable as a parent you have done nothing but enable those parents. Now there is more dole funds to buy tvs, gaming, phones and expensive shoes. Maybe on the plus side one day I will be so poor paying for all this I can qualify for these freebies too.

12:21 What is it exactly their getting for free? Advise? What exactly does support and services include?

50% poverty and it seems everyone has a I phone and a $120.00 pair of Air Jordan's?

Term,
You can only imagine!
Go to almost any food bank and watch folks come in who can't afford food but they have their smart phone, iPad, and such.
They can afford cigarettes but not food.
They get upset when pet food is not provided at the food bank.
I could go on but you get the idea.
Sad but all true.

What didn't you understand from 12:21. Return to school bash was just held. Those in need - bookbags, supplies haircuts cant remember the entire agenda. Again all free lunch and breakfast - year round now. We just keep handing it over year after year, more and more then the demands from those expecting the freebies are more. Kind of like trick or treat one candy isn't enough. I want 2. I want one for the baby at home. Give to the ones that really are in need, have people show proof Most of these people just have a bad case of the Gimmies, then gimmie more. Give to the ones that

10:57, the teachers don't decide the school year, the superintendent does, and the board approves it...not our fault.....

10:57 So am I to understand the teachers union has no input in the school year schedule?
It seems early the Lake County Fair starts tomorrow. The Little League World Series hasn't even started yet.
And as an 'oldtimer' I can't remember starting school before labor day?

Yes what did happen to the bill Ohio was trying to pass to have school start After Labor Day and end at Memorial Day? This was a few years back and nothing more has come of it. Where does it stand now?

Oh, the past superintendent used to have employees vote on 2 calendars, this was stopped when the new guy came in. No biggie its their right to decide not employees. Plus it never mattered if everyone voted for one, it was his right to veto it and go for the other anyway.

Term,
I have to think that you know better than that.
Why on Earth would you think the teachers or the teachers union would have any input on the school year??

Like you I am an old guy and you are correct, we never went to school before Labor Day.
Of course we didn't have anywhere as many days off (call them a 4 day work week) as the students do now.
That day off per week has to be made up somewhere.

12:57 see other 12:57? The many four day weeks are killing the schedule.

12:55 Don't know, but the promoters and financial sponsors and lobbyist were the likes of Cedar Point and Six Flags, nothing to do with education.
I'd like to see a study on how students starting school at 7:15 helps/hurts their academics?

Term,
Not a direct relationship but a look at the declining test scores for students plus the decline of our students abilities compared to the rest of the world should be some sort of indication.
Our educational system is a real mess. Teachers are baby sitters and little real teaching can take place when you have proficiency tests that MUST be passed.
If you don't believe it, listen to the English as practiced by TV newscasters. These are people with degrees in communications, English, journalism, and whatever else yet they still can not compose a proper sentence.

4:02 Remember these newscasters must communicate with their audiences.

Plus have you ever watched Rev. Al read from a teleprompter? Priceless

At the beginning of all these proficiency tests the Republicans were front and center with the testing. Now they claim to be against it? What gives?

Early start equals tardy kids. Many Many tardies. But I don't think the time of day matters its lazy kids with lazy parents or parents who cant motivate the kids to get up and out. Pity the next bunch of lazy workers coming up. If you cant get up for school you wont get up for work.

12:01 Maybe but they don't take attendance until what 11:00?

Thinking back when I was at Harvey starting time was 8:10. What happened?
You sound like the generation ahead of us they claimed the same thing. Me never missed a scheduled day of work, Until February 15, 2002. Woke up in the hospital.
Americans are working longer and harder then ever.
