"SECOND CHANCE" 38 SPECIAL
Reliable Sources around town? How reliable can that be?
But I expect Hal Werner to run in Ward II against Katie Jenkins.
Mr. Werner has until 4:00 today to turn in his petitions to the board of elections.
With the incidents that have occurred in Painesville over the past month Hal's second run might be easier than the first.
Was he ahead of the curve? warning us about the situation we now are currently facing?
To his credit he did call attention and removal of the Mexican Matictular Card and Painesville Services do not honor it.
Hal to his credit also voted against the AMP-OHIO deal.
I have been told that Mr. Werner will be a speaker at the Rally on Saturday at Veterans Park. Where he will officially announce his run for Ward II.
Look Hal's got his faults, he loves to pontificate and maybe he has learned from the mistakes he made during his first time on council. Do what's in your heart with no regard of what it will do to your re-election, don't sweat the small stuff. And for God's sake don't even look at Jackie's!
And please don't ever expect to be welcomed into the enter-circle of the movers & shakers. Just do your job to the best of your ability.
Everyone deserves a second chance.
Strange, Ward IV seems to be without a challenger to Council-President Paul Hach

The only thing I agree with in this post is that Hal Werner will probably win election, given the timing with recent events. He's never received my vote, and never will, because I regard him as a one-trick pony, and that trick too closely makes him come off as overly obsessed and intolerant. He represented our ward before, but he gave the impression that he only cared about the opinions of people just like him (older, white, Republican). I know people who've had to interact with, and live near, Hal over the years, and none had anything good to say about him. Katie Jenkins is no prize, either, especially her ability to respond timely to constituents, which is sadly lacking. She has also been too quick to go along to get along with her council colleagues. The couple of times I've spoken with her, she gave the impression that she didn't have much passion for the job.
No matter which of the two will win, we in Ward II lose.
Is anyone running in Ward I? (Hopefully not Flock.)
Is anyone else running in Ward II that you know of?
While you and I agree many times, we also disagree at times.
This is one where we disagree.
While I am generally in favor of second chances, not when it was a political office and you used it for your personal agenda.
Hal might very well be a nice guy but he was a lousy Council person. I can't think of anything he did that was worthwhile.
Sitting in Council meetings, there was hardly anything worse than having to listen when he started one of his rambles.
Katie might not be perfect but she is light years ahead of Hal.
1:45/12:56 Maybe he learned something? Also he voted against the AMP-OHIO deal that cost the city millions. Now Katie doesn't even want to send a letter concerning the deal to the attorney general. Anyone who doesn't want an investigation I question.
The reason Hal voted against the AMP-OHIO deal? He took the time to listen to both sides of the argument.
Did anyone challenge Paul Hach? With all the complaining from Heisley Park you wonder why he wasn't challenged? Maybe they just like to hear themselves complain?
9:20 'Ya think?
9:20...... Why do so few run in this city, in any ward? What can we as a community do to turn it around? I am really puzzled over this. I thought that once the charter change was put into place and someone only needed 25 signatures in a ward or 50 at large we would open the door for more candidates. It didn't happen. Why?
Sandy, It's time consuming, could be expensive and little in to sense of reward. I have been at a council members house when they were berated by a resident on the phone even the fact that he voted the way the caller wanted. $6,000 a year you can spend less time and make more money as a crossing guard.
With all the complaints out of Heisley Park about the city and Paul Hach all I can tell them is .... live with it!
Term, I agree with your reasons as to why being a council member is pretty much a thankless task, especially dealing with constituents, many of whom are likely rude and/or misinformed. Maybe the prospect of having to deal with these types of people is enough to say "no, thanks" to running for council. In fact, I know of one person - my next-door neighbor, who otherwise has the qualifications to be a top-quality council member - who told me that's the very reason why he would never run. Some of us in this forum have complained about city workers, such as in the utility department, being rude to the public; while it's still not excusable, I do wonder how any of us would maintain our civility after constantly dealing with the rude and/or ignorant.
There's a lot of people who have thought for a lot of years that the reason "they" (the Horvath's, DelaMotte's, etc.) kept, and keep, the compensation for the job so low, is so that no one will run, and they could keep the monopoly. Beck tried to raise the pay of the council when she was in, as I recall, but it didn't pass. Someone needs to try again, but everyone on council now are part of "them" as far as I'm concerned, and wouldn't do it.
Best suggestion for Hal;
"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt"
Mark Twain
Seriously Hal doesn't have the gift to lead people where he wants to take them he feels he alone can drag them there.
The choice is Hal or Jenkins? Oh brother. I wouldn't give you two cents for Jenkins, and Hal...I wouldn't trust Hal to walk my dog. He got people to help him with his campaign by telling them for one thing that he wanted former City Manager, McMahon out, and then the very night of the elections, literally turned his back on the people who got him elected and tried to saddle up with McMahon. And I mean, wouldn't even talk to them. He's a jerk, and his head got so big that very night, that I was sure it was going to explode. I could go on... So that's the best of it? Just those two? Geeze. What about Ward I? I certainly hope Flock is not running and that someone else is. Who's running in Ward I please.
Every time salary increase for council comes up it tanks! I have been told that council should be voluntary! We should double the salary of council and give increases the same as city workers. The reality is most of us need to make a living to pay our taxes and electric bills. If you're not going to increase the salary keep the salary the same, $6,000 and give council members free utilities. Not sure we can bypass the taxes but that would be great to.
7:08 Your correct. It's like paying the board of directors of a major corporation minimum wage to sit on it.
Yes it always has been a closed off group. When was the last time council's salary was raised? You get/got what you paid for people? Maybe with a different bunch we could have avoided a lot of this.
I have always felt that being on a Council or school Board was pretty much the same
Completely thankless.
If everything goes "right", no one notices or says anything.
If anything goes wrong, you never hear the end of it.
Why would anyone run for a Council position when most of what you hear is negative?
I certainly wouldn't need to hear people calling at 2 am asking why their street hasn't been plowed.
IMO, people need to take the blinders off and understand that whatever burr is under their saddle isn't always a problem for every one. IOW, do things that help the majority of the people and not just those who complain the most.
While I am thinking of it lets' stop calling this "public service"
To me, public service should be used to describe a position done to benefit the citizen for no compensation.
Many Boards or Committees fit this description. Safety, Planning and Zoning are some that come to mind.
If someone is compensated for a work they do, it is a JOB.
You have to remember that every Council member actually ran for the job.
They knew what was involved, they get paid for it, and they are on the PERS system so they get a pension if they serve enough time.
This is not "public service".
The same is true of firemen, police, and any other employee of the City. Heck, it is even true of members of Congress who people refer to as public servants.
I don't mind serving on committees that accomplish something and don't mind doing it on my own time. The Streetscapes committee pushed me over the edge and I walked away. The charter committee, that's a different story. There are others in the community who feel the same. I have not served on any committee under the new administration and my opinion comes from the last administration.
If you want council voting on a 50 year contract with huge ramifications to this town and you had council people showing up just opening their packets at the council meeting, I believe there is a problem. It's not a popularity contest or stepping stone to get somewhere else. Do your homework, come prepared and ask intelligent question and for Pete sake give the city manager the guidance he requests and deserves.
If you work a 40 hour week, (that would be a vacation in our house), have kids in school, play sports or work another part time job, council obligations are next to impossible.
Sure give council a raise, but do it soon. Buzz says by 2017 the reserve coffers will be gone. Keep giving it away Painesville.
The council raises are not up to the public. It is up to council, and they keep voting it down, and I believe that's to keep everyone but "the clique" from running. Maybe it's time the public speaks out on this issue also, because we apparently ARE getting what we're paying for, but it's not our fault.
