"THANKS FOR THE MEMORY" bob hope shirley ross

Yes the official State of Ohio report card is out. If the BOE had played this out right the claim should have been made the cost of the modified contract was to get rid of him.

Well on a positive thought for Mr. Shepard it seems he has many more possibilities to go up rather than down.I have a few idea's but none are politically correct. First off let's make student's as well as their parent's more responsible for getting their children to understand the importance of school.

It's nice to believe that an educator who got his degree from Kent State or where ever can suddenly be a magician and make your offspring a gifted child.

I read an article and I will look for it to post here how Cleveland City Schools have chosen 20 school's for a new program. Simply no more options. Please and thank-you are not options they are orders, period. No more praise for student's for doing the expected only for exceeding it.

Parent's must understand if you don't want your children to live in poverty as well as their grandchildren  future. The school's hold a key to a better future. Now if you want to have your son or daughters 'BACK' against the people doing there best to educate them. Do us all a favor and go down to Jobs & Human services and sign them up for a dismal life. Saving us the expense of trying to elevate them.

It's really simple. The people of Painesville have paid for the best facilities, hired some pretty good help, have not spared anything for a child to succeed. Along with many of those teacher's sharing the belief that any child can be a success. In 20 years I don't want to hear how our system failed you or yours.

The Board is a key component to those test scores! They must be held accountable! What an outrage for a community that has repeatedly supported the schools through levies! And it's about the same for city council...... Can we please have a letter grade for city antics too? Maybe then the taxpayers will understand we are on the Titanic!

Is it true that some parents come to school wearing their pajamas?... if so.. do they wear PJ to their work?

How Chardon could hired him is unbelievable.

Hanlon was a born loser ... I'm going to retire as he applied for positions all over Ohio.

Could not agree more Term...as a teacher in the district, it was a nice change for Mr. Shepard to have led the meeting in a positive way than the gloom and doom of Dr. Hanlon. While I agree there is much work to be done, it is good to celebrate the successes that we do have at PCLS. I feel that you hit the nail on the head with the community aspect, and changing the culture of some students and parents. It is what is needed. The adage is correct when you can lead a horse to water.....we have very nice pools to drink the water from and technology to make sure the water arrives, and teachers to teach the horse to drink, but the horses will still sometimes not drink. Fix that, and scores will immediately rise. I for one was glad to turn the page on the good doctor....

I am deeply sadden by the PCLS report card as published today. As a taxpayer in Painesville, I have voted for all school levies.
When we look at the schools in the Riverside district we see old facilities and yet the scores are very high. When we go to Madison we saw old facilities and yet high scores. If you go to functions at Riverside, Perry, Madison, etc. you see a very diverse school population. Painesville can no longer use the fact that we have a diverse population as an excuse.
I compared the summer reading assignment of PCLS to Riverside and I found a huge difference. The LaMuth students are expected to read 2 books. The first book you answer questions after each chapter. The second book students had a variety of activities to select their two required activities from. Riverside parents were encouraged to read the books with their kids. If you go to PCLS, the students had A POSTER to complete and will have to take a quiz over the book. I could not find the title of the book they were to read on the PCLS web site.

Under the former leadership PCLS went NO WHERE! Our leadership continued to be paid a high salary for leadership that was poor. Our Board has approved a 5 month salary of $111,000. for a leader that has deeply hurt our schools during his tenure.
At this point I can only hope the new leaders can move PCLS forward.
I feel these new leaders have their work cut out for them. I wish them well.
On the bright side, for the first time in YEARS, I saw a Harvey band to be proud of in the Fair Parade. Now if this mentality could be used to improve scores and working conditions in the PCLS system, maybe PCLS will have a chance!

From the bottom.
4:56 It was never meant to help us.
8:29 Dr. Hanlon gave every indication getting out of Painesville was job 1.
Using a sport anology he went from coaching a 2-14 team to a team that make the playooff's every year. Now we will see how Chardon does. They will get rid of him if there is much of a down turn. Why anyone in their right mind would have given him a 5 year contract knowing his history of wanting to leave seems crazy to me.
6:21 Yes you can lead a horse to water. It will be interesting how the administration deals with parent's of disruptive student? If the administration decides to trow them back at the staff nothing will improve.
4:11 Yes he took care of himself pretty well and it's are for me to see what Chardon idea is?
1:36 I've seen that, along with a pink T-top that said 'PINK' white poddle house shoes sorta a full Painesville. Look if the parent's see no need to respect education what makes you believe their children will? In 20 or so years they will be coming to school this way.
1:07 Yes but let's admit the BOE has provided excellent facilities, as good a staff as anyone else has, no 50 student class size, no one walking 22 miles to school a free lunch and breakfast, programs that students in other districs would envy. ($40 pay to play) So what is the problem? As a Painesville resident I feel no guilt that student's have been short changed.

I went to that news story you spoke of in Monday's Plain Dealer and it seems to to say that teachers at times are uniintended enablers. I agree many make excuses only to further setback a student. the program was called No-Nonsense Nurturer. I would like you as well as other's comment on this program.

Before everyone starts to berate the parents in Painesville lets be honest and look at the leadership we have had in the PCLS. You had Dr. Hanlon who tried to leave from the day he came. He went after teachers with private investigators (spending hard fought tax payers money). You had the principal of Harvey High School who eventually married the treasurer. This principal enacted the 50% rule against the will of many. She had a second job with a high energy work out organization and even had a infomercial for this organization. You had Dr. Hanlon hire a person to replace Mr. Beeler who was qualified. Take a look at the mess the outside of many of the schools are in and thank this individual-who's followed Dr. Hanlon to Chardon! The person didn't know how to finish the bidding process so that there was the necessary lawn care for the building. You have board members that are on the board that have been appointed rather than elected. You have poor performing principals that have been allowed to keep their jobs. You have teachers that refuse to allow parents into the classrooms or work with them as partners in the education of their child. Then you have the teachers that treat parents with little respect. The are a set of former teacher/administrators that were so badly treated by the teacher this past year that they refused to go into the building anymore. This team of former educators would have provided any help necessary to make sure children succeeded but were told by the teacher they needed to stop helping their grandson. You have tools provided to principals and teachers that refuse to learn to use them correctly. It took over 8 weeks last year to have a grade correct for a child that had all "As" and one "F". The one "F" was really an "A" that had been wrongly calculated by the teacher. Repeatedly the parent asked for a correction when it took until semesters to get this action. And then you also have parents that act rude "all the time". Try picking up children and see the rudeness that is allowed to happen. As I finish I have found that there are many, many factors that all contributed to the poor report card for PCLS and it isn't all parents! Yes, I am excited to see how the new leadership handles all the problems in PCLS left by Dr. Hanlon who by the way is still working for us until December. Maybe he should be out pulling the weeds that his employee forgot to take care of!

8:29...you could not find a title for the book because all children were given their own copy of the book. You can't compare this district to others in terms of parental involvement, because it is very low...

Yes many of us are aware of Hanlon's support of a good old boys club. Yes I have been made aware of a former principal being intoxicated at a council-person house in front of former students. I guess your point was this whole bunch failed Harvey students? Yes I agree now someone else will have to deal him if he continues all this. I refuse to use the names you presented only becauce I am not aware if all were involved.

Would you please post the Cleveland (20 schools?new program)article or point me in the direction to find it please? I hope with this new leadership there will be no more of this kinder-gentler business and get back to the basics of education, politeness and common sense.

those results are terrible, but having gone to the PCLS in the 60's, they were ALWAYS considered subpar to all the other school systems in Lake County. It's been a long time since I've been in P'ville and know of no one currently with kids there, so I have to rely on what I read here and elsewhere. Discipline is a problem everywhere, even in affluent communities, isn't it? Are the P'ville schools really that much worse than they were in my "Wonder Days" (and I think yours too, TERM)?

1:58 go to Cleveland.com search Cleveland investment schools.
There will be a story about Anton Grdina Elementary School 8/18/13

10:28 I guess it might have been perception? Many Painesville students moved to other communities and for the most part fit right in. Now the problem with PCLS seems to be in middle and high school. Harvey in my view had a terrible top administration until last year, now the place seems to run as a place of learning again. The middle school I am not sure of yet. If the administration, and staff at these two school's put up with the parent's bullying nothing will change. You go to work to do a job, students go to school to get an education. School should be enjoyable to attend but it's purpose is not to become a social hangout, there's a job to do.
Painesville can change it around let's face it the past 15 years way of doing things haven't worked.
10:28 Think back think of the number of times when you were is school how many times some ones parent came in and blamed teachers or staff for why the student had been reprimanded?
