"BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING 05/13/13"

Well last night I learned how to take lemons and turn them into into lemonade.
First my reasoning for not naming the Superintendent before the recent renewal levy. They must have figured no use in upsetting anyone? This with the BOE knowing their choice was not the people's first choice. So to avoid  a confrontation with people at the BOE meeting lets announce our new superintendent a few days ahead of the BOE meeting. Not at the BOE meeting as many were told. Lets  diffuse the situation. This is our guy live with it. Forget about all about that transparency talk, we wanted your input. Look all we really want is your money.

Now I lay none of this at Mr. Shepards feet he just applied for a position. I am sure he had no knowledge of being used along with others as a pawn.

In other news the BOE and told us about Dr. Hanlon's $45,000 supplemental check to help us in this time of transition. I always love it when someone pays out $45,000 and tells me it didn't cost us anything! Didn't need to make that public before an election.

We also learned of the resignation of Assistant Superintendent Denise Ward.
The hiring of;
Mr. Zachary Cousins  Principal at Maple Elementary School.
Mr. Joshua Englehart  Principal at Elm Elementary School.

We also learned of the Heritage Middle School Girls track coach termination effective 04/18/13. We didn't discuss any of the  allegations surrounding that action. Along with no use stirring up old memories from earlier why rehash bad memories? Look they had had four special meetings since the last meeting we could have included this in one of them or even had another special meeting. The most I heard out of that was 'It takes two to tango'  Great its the middle school kids fault? Something else you didn't need to know before the election.

To tell you I'm disappointed in the action of the BOE is an understatement. The best that can come of all this is that Mr. Shepard does an outstanding job and maybe then I for one will trust these people again.

Let's finish on a positive note,

The Central YMCA as received a grant to help at risk children with a summer school program Mr.Ehrbar  from the YMCA and Mr. Bull representing the school district I believe will do everything possible to make the program a success. Now if  only the parents sign their children up?

Another reason to get out and vote! These guys gotta go!

Who would you like to see on the school?

Your right but what would stop people from asking for all their resignation?

The YMCA was once a nice place to go. Not anymore. It's stinky, dirty and filthy. It's full of members that don't care. Children are allowed to run amuck on the track and in the locker rooms. I plan to cancelmy membership and go to MHRC.

Something to think about. The PC schools has many aids for the Mexican kids. Why are they considered teachers? I thought you had to have some type of teaching degree, like a masters or even a 4 year college degree? Check out the names and titles around the buildings that have the aid's name with the word TEACHER below it.
How does this stuff keep happening?

At May 18, 2013 at 7:24 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

Lets both attend a BOE meeting and we will ask them?
It keeps happening because we let it.

At May 18, 2013 at 9:02 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why does it matter what title is given to an aid? Do they deserve less respect because they don't have a teaching license? They are in there helping kids instead of complaining from the sidelines. Just silly.

At May 18, 2013 at 5:21 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

9:02 They both should be respected. But a teacher is a little higher on the ladder aides.
I believe it is dishonest to call someone a teacher who isn't?
A lot of time and hard work went into becoming a teacher. Silly?

At May 19, 2013 at 7:44 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

I have looked into this and it disturbs me that a number of teachers' aides have been given classrooms? in some of our schools.
Something is very wrong if the school community as well as the public are given the impression that these people are certified teachers and their are no 'real' teacher present.
They need their names on the door?
Now if the above is fact. Then it should be addressed as to the why and how by the BOE.

At May 19, 2013 at 5:34 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

Little help here? If a teacher is absent from a class and no substitute can be found can a teacher's aide teach the class?
Along with a 'bonus' payment from the school system?

AND teachers you let this practice go on?

Are there classroom's in the system that have aides names on the door?

At May 19, 2013 at 8:30 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I do not believe it is legal to have a teacher's aide teaching a class. They could be used to monitor the class with no teacher but cann't be used in the role of a teacher. A person that has a college degree even if it is not in education can sign-up to be a substitute(and these people all have the FBI and Background checks and have been hired by the LSC).
A teacher's aide that does not have a college degree cann't and should not be used as a teacher no matter what the problem is.
All teacher's aides have to have background checks and have a pupil supervison certificate.
The teacher's aide can file a grivence against the administration for putting them in a sitution that they are not prepared for. If a student gets hurt in a classroom without the proper staffing, the school administration will have a big legal problem.

In my school, the paraprofessionals (aides) that have their own room only have students in their room for an enrichment type of class (ie study hall). There is no first learning going on, that always happens with the teacher, where they are also in the teacher's room. Yes, their name is outside the door, but I am pretty sure it does not say teacher. If you ask why they have their own room and have that kind of class....administration makes all those decisions....us teachers have enough to do and worry about already, with a mountain of changes coming from the state next year...

At May 21, 2013 at 4:59 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Term,

Aides cannot teach new material. What they can do is work with kids who have already been taught the material by teachers. For example, Mrs. Smith teaches science and some of the kids don't get the main concepts. During study hall and aide can pull these kids into a classroom to work on these skills and main ideas. As far as aides having clasrooms. . . they have to help these kids somewhere, and the cafeteria, principal's office, and bathrooms aren't really conducive for this kind of learning.

Don't we have more important things to worry about than the signs outside the door....

At May 21, 2013 at 8:20 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

We sure do! The problem seems that people like yourself believe everything is fine. Look at your scores. If the present way you did things were working you wouldn't be hearing about signs.
There better not be any laws broken. Like giving people responsibility they shouldn't have. No wonder you don't want parents in the building.

At May 21, 2013 at 11:53 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who said everything was fine? Certainly I don't think so...I think your logic is backwards...if everything was working... we would hear about signs because there is nothing left to discuss. Pieces of paper outside a door are just that...I would rather focus on why the district won't hire enough ESL teachers for our population. Our aides are just monitors in their room. I
welcome parents in the buildings... I just wish
more would want to come...so many cannot be bothered or have an adverserial relationship with the school. I love my job....I just want to work on improving scores...

At May 21, 2013 at 2:44 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

You want to know why you don't have enough ESL teachers? Think about that when you and your cohorts renegotiate your contract and ask for a 4%+ raise. You won't be thinking about ESL then.
Your schools are very unwelcoming for a reason.

This is 2:44. I was surprised you published my comment. I always thought you were a mouth piece for the schools.
Let me explain myself. I work closely with the schools and I see and heard things maybe I shouldn't have.
In the past two years we have passed a new levy, as well as a renewal. The state will increase our funding no less than 6%. With all this money coming into the schools maybe you should ask Costell and the rest of them why are they buying used school buses? Take Bus 37 an F700 White. no state ID number yet. How old is it and where did it come from? Maybe from across the River?
Look as a resident I am sick and tired of hearing FOR THE CHILDREN when if you cared about children why buy a used bus?
Only to feather the pay of ALL your employee's?
Funny someone mentioned that well at least they didn't buy a 23 year old school bus. The truth is stranger than fiction.
Teacher making $60,000 4% raise? Well how many of you received a $2,400 raise?

6:11 I do not carry water for the BOE. Along with what I have witnessed in the last month makes me wonder why I put faith in some of those people.
I thought your story was satire at first. With my limited knowledge of school buses I went and looked at No.37 Sure does look like a Riverside school bus with Painesville marking. Wonder what story we will be hearing. Presently I don't know if your right. I only can hope your not.

I love hearing about methlabs, old fire trucks, used school buses, alleged crimes on children, bridges to nowhere, fixing up two blocks of Main St. the hit's keep coming.

As a city resident I think its a shame to have classrooms without teachers in all of them. Every room in the building, aside from the art, library, detention, studyhall, band, etc. rooms should be utilized by a teacher in some way or another. Taxpayer dollars built them now use them as you should. Teacher assistants should not by any means have their own classroom let alone 3 of them and all only ESL to boot? As for where to assist them, why not in the back of the classroom, in the hallway or a meeting room. You should not have your own classrooms.

How much do you think a 20 year veteran teacher with a master's degree plus 18 additional graduate credits to renew their license every 5 years is worth? By the way we have not had a pay raise in 3 years....I'm not aware that we are asking for a 4% raise....Just so you know we have a huge turn over of teachers every year....many of our teachers are at base salary. Do you think this huge turn over of teachers and replacing them each year with teachers with no experience has anything to do with poor test grades????? Quit complaining about our salaries. If you want to make more money go to college and study hard and get a better job!!!!!!!!

You better go look again. There's more than one of those buses.
Maybe there rabbit buses? They keep multiplying.

So someone wants this district to hire more ESL teachers for "our population"? Just what is "our population"? My population is this country. So my population is English speaking American legal resident. You should be proposing a fast track crash course through the summer that will better prepare "your population" so "my tax dollars" will go to equal education across the board and not to illegal people sneeking into this country. Fix the problem not make it worse.

Hey Rosetta Stone....
By law, we cannot ask the resident status of our students. Secondly, most of them are Americans, just like you and I. Most of these families have been here for some time. Also, I totally believe I having them learn English ASAP....but the State doesn't care about their language barrier. They get extended time and a dictionary in their native language. How would you do if you moved to Russia or China right before the test, and a teacher slid you a Russian/English dictionary, and then your scores count towards your report card that reflects on your school?...not exactly fair...not saying I agree with it, but that is what the state says we have to do...

I teach in Painesville City. I'm not going to argue about pay. I have a Masters Degree, large student loan debt, and I DO NOT make near 60 a year. I am not asking for a pay raise. I didn't go in to teaching for the money, but it is nice to be able to feed my family.
I do love the children I teach. I do work hard! In any kind of emergency, I would protect your children. Teachers
have shielded children from bullets and tornadoes.
I teach them, I love them, I help them in any way that I can. It is hurtful at times, to be treated as if all I care about is money! We are not the enemy. A little respect would be nice!

The alien buses may come from anyone of the districts that our Transportation Director works in.
He is over several districts so we are probably sharing buses now.

Yes but why are the markings Painesville City Board Of Education. Along with no state number?
We were told sometimes a Riverside or Perry Bus might be used to transport your child . This is a different animal.
My guess we picked up the buses cheap from Riverside or they were used in some barter situation.
After passing two levies in the past two years wonder why now we are on an austerity program?
So we purchased new buses before the levies pass and used ones now?
Guess we will need this explained at the next BOE meeting?

At May 24, 2013 at 8:11 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I just can't understand this one? You must be seeing things wrong.
Why purchase used school buses?
Can't wait to hear the answer.
The schools would probable get more support if they switched and called programs English as a first language instead of a second?

At May 24, 2013 at 9:25 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thank's to our city council.. You wiil never see English, the first language in painesville. If you have been following the two open C.E.O. position's the main reason the person was hired was their ability to be bilingual. HAVE WE HAD GOOD LEADERSHIP???

At May 25, 2013 at 7:00 PM , Anonymous Rosetta Stone said...

I guess that makes the situation even worse than I thought. If these children are Americans, meaning they were born in America (anchor babies)that would mean from birth to age 5 they were never taught English? They never spoke it? That's a real shame.

I realize there are challenges within this district. But why just this district? Why is this one at the bottom of the list for Lake County just as Euclid is for Cuyahoga County year after year.
The problem as I see it is the Hispanic children. If they were born here, why can't they speak English by first grade? That's a lot of time to work on that skill. The real reason, I will answer my own question - because they DON'T WANT TO. They are proud of their Mexican heritage; they don't want to assimilate and only want to take away from America what they want. Rules do not apply. I for one am tired of hearing about these poor people. If you want to make it better DO IT, no one should do it for you.

At May 27, 2013 at 3:27 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

The problem as I see it is the Section 8 housing.....I think those in Painesville sold their sole for more tax breaks or whatever....Most Hispanic parents that I have are very supportive of the schools and teachers...notice what you said ...Painesville is like Euclid. Large populations of section 8 in each...I have way more native English speaking students who don't do work, or refuse to do work than Hipanics.....why...because we are fighting a culture that says its not cool to be smart, and that whenever school calls home, the teacher is just trying to get someone in trouble. Until we change THAT mindset in Painesville, scores will never improve. If you can solve that, you can run for King or Queen of Painesville....

At May 27, 2013 at 3:29 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey....10:11...

They are MADE to got to summer school because they had 180 days to pass a core class and did not. It is not for enrichment, it's for REMEDIATION. At the middle school, it's only 4 teachers. Perhaps you should be asking why your student couldn't get at least 4Ds in a core class. If you don't attend summer school, you have the possibility of being retained...don't pin it on the teachers because a student chose not to pass....we are giving them one last chance to pass. And I am not talking about students with a learning disability or medical issue, I'm talking about yahoos who goofed off all year and could not get at least 4D's.....and most teachers DO have a summer job....

Term,

It is definitely true that the culture of some groups think its not cool to be smart. I understand it is hard to understand, but ask and middle or high school teacher. Your generation and mine can't understand it, but it is true. ADM sometimes backs us sometimes not.

I would like to have an alternative school within the district. Then, we could put all of the people that hinder learning there...just an idea...

9:57 and 10:11 could use Summer school for spelling and grammar. I'm not a teacher but Head Start is a Federal program- nothing to do with PCLS. If I was a teacher and had to call home about one of your children 9:57 and 10:11, bet I would not get far. That is a BIG part of the problem here. I have met a lot of good teachers- I'm afraid the problem most of the time comes from home. And YES I have a child at Harvey :( it is cool not to do well in school! Not in our family though! PARENTS step up!
