"GO YOUR OWN WAY" fleetwood mac

Yes before the bombshell of  Dr. Hanlons retirement a  presentation was given on if this new levy as well as the renewal that will be put on the ballot in 2013 fail what your district will look like.
By the year 2017 we could face a negative balance of over 10.5 million dollars. Gifted student programs will end along with full day kindergarten, all athletic programs as well as all busing for student who don't live further than two miles from school [K-8] and no bus transportation for high school students. Class sizes will increace also would be included. An example presently the district transports 1,200 students a day they will be only obligated to transport 350 if both levies fail.

Now when the state cut school funding amounts to local districts Painesville City Schools seemed to have avoided the drastic cuts other district have.

Presently  the state supplies over 70% of our school funding. we spend per pupil  $11,169.00 per year per pupil presently to educate our students I'm guessing around $62.00 per school day. I just wonder if spending more more is the answer?

Will as it seem the state is receiving more revenue will it be passed on to local schools as well as local governments? Something else to consider? I guess we will have to wait to see what the Governor has in his plans for that money?  It would be ironic if next year as he faces re-election he will be able to claim the state is running a surplus while it seems every districts seems to have had to ask for a levy to maintain expenses? You actually haven't saved anything.

Another thing to consider is that all classified and well as unclassified employees presently under contract are living under a wage freeze this contract. What happens when negotiations start for the 2014 contract?

I guess the what you have to believe is that if you can afford this tax increase than vote for it. The claim of this years levy slogan is "Put kids First" What you have to do is decide if you put them or your family first. In closing I believe the levy will pass. One reason  many have stated that as long as Dr. Hanlon is in charge  they won't vote for a levy. That argument is over. Plus the fact of the number of low income housing in Painesville  that the district has made sure to register to vote. Their vote won't cost them anything or very little. This is what happens when a city lets housing projects like Brentwood, Kensington, Argonne Arms plus more section 8 housing than a community can handle.. What we're we looking for City Income Tax dollars?

Again if you can afford it, vote for it. I also believe this will be a challenge for the BOE to find a Superintendent that will live, send his children to the schools he or she will be in charge of. I for one will oppose anyone the BOE recommends who decides not to live in the district.

Oh, and please Mr. Sebring no more animals larger than a hamster.

Ok, here's my problem regarding Dr. Hanlon: If he had knowledge of the concerns parts of the community had about Klingenberg prior to finding out about the ongoing criminal investigation, why didn't he report it? Of course this is just me assuming he had prior knowledge(I bet he did)about some of Klingenberg's alleged transgressions. Dr. Hanlon is mandated by the state to report these kinds of things to the ODE (Ohio Department of Education). If it comes to light that he did not, then he should be fired and not have the option of retiring. I have no problem voting FOR the upcoming levy, however I do have a problem with my money going towards his retirement package.

"We" were never going to save anything. But taxes should be paid at the level that is appropriate to the authority and impact that is applicable. Local taxes should support schools, with minimal state funds or influence. Why should a Painesville resident expect a Willoughby resident to pay for their schools? Likewise, why should a Painesville resident pay for a park walking trail in Mentor?

At least when taxes are paid to the appropriate entity, a citizen has a chance of some appropriate input. But if the money comes from DC or Columbus, the schools or governments listen to DC or Columbus, and less to the citizens directly affected.

Hanlon is leaving, let's move on to the next issue.

We now need a strong leader! I for one could care less if he or she lives in Painesville. If this person had the leadership skills, is engaged with the community, is a creative thinker, and program builder, then he can live in where he/she can live where they want. Just get the kob done!!!

To Patiently Waiting: Hanlon knew, Ward knew, Kim Martin knew, DeAngelis knew about Klingenberg. They all need to go down.

12:45 Knew exactly what? I'm not disagreeing with you but how could these people know and sat quietly by?
11:51 I'm not 2 for nothing. I main thing that has to happen is the two positions your talking about are filled with the right people. The city and schools need people at the helm to best serve us.
10:11 What exactly will this Governor do with this money? Lower my state taxes $25.00 a year and then expect us to pay a couple of hundred extra in property taxes?

12:45 We have to stop pointing fingers and passing the buck. You know all about what these people knew, but did you know? Did you call the BOE or the ODE?

Yes, if our administrators knew they should be held accountable. But for every parent/person that heard the rumors or knew something and did nothing, YOU are just as accountable.

I know that my household knew nothing about any of his alleged inappropiate behavior but when we found out we did the right thing.

http://eiaonline.com/districts.htm

This web site lists costs per pupil in Ohio school districts. Cleveland for example spends $12,354 in compensation and $13,963 total cost per student. Mentor spends $9,872 in compensation per student and $11,675 total cost per student. Willoughby Eastlake spends $8,524 (compensation) and $11,675 total cost per student. Painesville spends $9,317 (compensation) and $10, 651 total cost. Perry spends the lowest of what I could find locally at $7,814 compensation and $8,944 total cost. So I'm concluding - spending more money does not equate to a better system, or a better education. But then neither do new school buildings, do they. (?)

I agree with 10:11. Why do people think this money is free and just "rains" down from the State and Feds? Doesn't it make mores sense to pay a dollar directly to the school district than to send a dollar off to Columbus, let them decide how to spend it, blow half of it on bureaucracy, then send fifty cents back to the school district?

Why should someone in Toledo subsidize schools in Painesville? If everyone kept the money local, there would be more accountability and more efficiency without the bureaucratic waste!

I know where 10:11 is coming from and do not necessarily disagree. The problem is our governor did not lowere the taxes and left the money back at the schools and municipalities. Instead he kept it and is walking around crowing about balancing the state budget.

Kathy, At Mondays BOE meeting Dr. Hanlon used the figure of $11,169.00 per pupil in Painesville?
4:12 If anyone in that system had heard of these alligations they had a responsibility to notify the proper authorities. This we can agree on. Were facts known? cruel gossip, what and who knew what. Again I believe the police were notified because a teacher did not have faith in the adminstration to do the proper investigation.
Just side stepping the administration.
5:01 Here's a reason, Nusery owners in Perry decide they need low skilled hard working laborer's. No housing in Perry so the businesses that benefit from these workers have no obligation to the fact the only nearby community was Painesville that had the right amount of housing and also provided their children with an education and other social services?

Regarding who knew about Klingenberg, I had heard about it from a very good source and called one of the BOE members. I may have stated this before here. He did not act surprised. This call was made back in July.

the problem with these levies is that with the rental rate in Painesville over 50%, these people don't give a rat's pitooty what the property taxes are. They will vote for it. And we taxpayers are stuck footing the bill. Painesville is already the poorest community with the second highest property taxes in the county. This has to stop. The few of us can't keep subsidizing this disaster.

Term - I don't know. I got the figures from the web site I listed. Maybe his figures are more current. What's a couple thousand amoung friends.

Kathy Your right and probably these are new numbers. The question seems to be if $11,169.00 isn't enough what is enough for the school year?
10:58 I agree but it's not just rentals, your making it to simple. I know property owners who send out notices to their teants their rent will go up if the levy passes. Now Section 8 as well as other low income property the levy probably does not effect their rent bill.
July who knew in the last school year or while it was going on?
8:04 I have some of the NO$ signs let me know if you want one. I didn't think anyone wanted one.
Everyone should be allowed to express their opinion YES or NO.

Roberta was an attorney with the state of Ohio.

OOPS, I forgot, was there a way to prevent Brentwood, Kensington or the new and improved Argonne? Which btw is no longer called Argonne Arms. If the land is zoned and the builder wants to build then I don't believe anyone can stop them as it would violate rights. You forgot about the two Jackson tower buildings or whatever they are called now.
That's a real hotbed of a mess too.

This is not what I would expect from someone sitting on council. What say you Term it's seems to be one of your friends?

In todays News-Herald I see Lori Dinallo's opponent was indorsed by the paper. One thing that struck me odd was she claims to have been trained in mediation. Since she has served on council I seem to notice she brings more conflict to a situation than a peaceful solution. Plus her moving forward only makes me seem used to further her aspirations and not Painesvilles.

The Plain Dealer also endorsed John Rogers. Then listed "the breadth of his experience - Rogers is also Lake County deputy treasurer - and his practical agenda to address problems in local government, school funding and infrastructure repair eclipse DiNallo's rhetoric.

The Plain Dealer also stated this was an easy choice for voters. Page G4 in the Forum section of the Sunday PD.

Wow!

8:28 I believe it's endorsed and I'm pleased they did.
Here actions on council hardly seem as a mediator.
Check party endorsements by the N-H they usually run 5 to 1 in favor of Republicans.
Romney will get the Presidential nod, We will see how they handle Mandel's inexperience.

What is it alleged that Klingenberg did? All I can tell is that he helped a student? I am not very informed, to be sure, but really, what is it alleged that he did? Then looks like, according to 5:44, that there must have been more than one. Clearly people think it went beyond helping a student? I'm a little lost here. Anyone care to share some more information for those of us who are out of this loop?
