Kasich: Raising local taxes "not an option"
COLUMBUS Ohio's governor says legislation to curtail the collective bargaining rights of public employees should help local government and school districts deal with reduced state funding.
Gov.John Kasich said that raising taxes at the local level is "not an option" to make up for state budget cuts.
A bill passed by the state Senate and now going through Ohio House hearings would prohibit strikes and limit other union rights of police, teachers, and other public employees. In the interview published Tuesday, Republican Kasich describes the measure as one of the "tools" his administration is giving local officals so they can control costs.
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS DEBATE
Ohio faith leaders fight union-rights bill
COLUMBUS Faith leaders from across the state are voicing opposition to an Ohio proposal to sharply limit the collective bargaining rights of public employees.
Representatives of Clergy United Against Senate Bill 5 marched up Broad St. in Columbus on Tuesday to deliver a letter to House Speaker Bill Batchelder at the Statehouse. Copies were also delivered to other representatives, who are seeking a compromise that can clear the 99 member Ohio House. The legislation passed the Ohio Senate 17-16.
More than 100 religious leaders of varied denominations signed the decree. It called on Gov. Kasich and state lawmakers to balance the state budget while avoiding blame and division and urged them to sit down at "the table of brotherhood" envisioned by Martin Luther King Jr.

This is the news from the school board that I said was coming. Doesn't mean they won't try again in November, but we have a reprieve now. CPR
I have a feeling your right. 6:56 the levy might not been enough to fill the hole left by the state. If it passed how could you ask for more in November?
Along with the board and everyone else n oone seems to know what the true cost of the state cuts.
Presently I would say the board is acting responsibly.
Well this is certainly a welcome improvement to an otherwise lousy day! Thanks for the info!
This does not mean they will not have the levy on the May 3rd ballot, it only means they are withdrawing the question of.
you need to read the fine print.
I have been told by numerous public officials the levy has been pulled from the May 3,2011 ballot.
I expect to see a levy on the November ballot.
It must be true I just read it on the news-herald web. site.
Well the PAC has more time to fight the next levy.
It will be interesting to see if this group will TRULY be non-partisan, non-ego/personality, not against everything, and can draw more people than post here. Will putting a face to the name Anonymous stop people from joining? Will those who left or stopped posting here return for possible more grief?
A group that draws it's members from all sides and those with different opinions can hopefully work together and offer better ideas. If it doesn't become a diverse group, it's credibility will remain low and have very little power as an opposing force for anything.
Let's hope the officers are open to new ideas and willing to answer questions and listen to those who have something to say. I reserve my opinion on this PAC until I see who the leaders are.
has anyone noticed that the old millstone hasnt flooded like it did during the big flood. The reason is that the flood was actually caused by the construction crew that was working on the new bridge they actually dammed up the river so they could work there which caused the backup and flooding. Why were they never held respocible for all the damage they did.
I am apalled at the ignorance of some people who write on this blog. They speak of things of which they know nothing.
icare, let's have specifics. who is ignorant? CPR

Could the reason the levy is on hold is because the schools budget isn't going to be cut as drastic as they expected? Once the dust settles, they find out they aren't being cut as bad maybe as they first thought, they sell off the property they were holding to build new schools they may find things aren't going to be as bad as predicted and not ask for nearly as much for the next levy. Maybe they are out of Term's hot seat for a little while.
Elypern.... You could be right or they need more then 1.4 million and will ask for it in November.
FYI selling the Harvey property the funds can not go into the general fund, only in the building fund or to retire debt on the new schools. Elypern lets hope your theory is right.
Guess it wasn't much of an Emergency levy?
emergency n.
crisis,exigency,urgency
credibility n. believability,reliability,
trustworthness,integrity.
Guess now the board and administration has neither of these.
Sorry, I couldn't verify the layoff comment.
Elypern says...I said nothing of the Harvey property. I was speaking of all the property in the North end where they thought of building first. Believe it's the wooded area that runs from Sanford to Owego, that area.
They have been trying to unload that property. To bad there doesn't seem much urgency of finding a buyer. That sale could not go into the general fund either.
AMEN, 11:47 AM. If it's in the News Herald AND on this site it must be gospel.
I do not understand this site. You talk out of both sides of your mouth. You have claimed many many times that you speak only the truth on your blog yet an above poster stated that there were layoffs at a "grade" school? (what grade school and where are grade schools anymore) AND you stated you couldn't verify that comment.
You should be in BIG trouble for printing untruths and inducing panic. What kind of person are you?
3:05 Somehow that comment was posted by me by mistake. There wasn't enough time or information to post it. In my haste it got put up. Sorry.
Yes, but even if it can not go to the general fund, the money from the sale of the land will help lesson another fund.
RE: Your comment that was posted by yourself in error, how does one know what other comments made are invalid also. People, people - go directly to the source not a middleman.
It's amazing how opinions, assumptions and accusations become fact here and in Painesville.
Will the POC continue this practice? We will have to see. If the two sides just keep fighting among themselves, where does that leave the average person in Painesville.
One side raising money to fight the money spent opposing the other side. Talk about money down the drain.
Well now you have it so post it.
