"40 MILES OF BAD ROAD" duane eddy

I see our finance department and city manager received, for the umpteen time, a financial award. Congratulations! Now I would like to see an award for street and/or public maintenance.
The intrastructure of our city seems to be failing; bad roads, bad water lines, along with the usual sewer problems, but we keep getting finance awards.
At last Mondays council meeting a long debate on a 91 year old water line on Elm St. took place which included a newspaper article in which our present city manager stated 11 years ago that the Elm St. water line needed replacing. Fast forward 11 years.... guess what....same broken down water line.
Now I will suggest to Dan the Waterman that before the next council meeting that he and I go to Mrs. Arcaro's house... fill up some containers... and that will be the drinking water council will use that night. Everyone said even though it's a little cloudy it's safe to drink, so drink it.
Sorta like putting your throat where your mouth is.
Councilman Flock couldn't even get a second for a vote on the measure. One councilman said they wanted to know how this affects the city's finances? Probably the same as the effect $185,000 had on replacing a vehicle with 30,000 miles.
Every motion a councilperson makes should get a second. It should be made public record why a councilperson thinks something is or is not a good idea. I want to see Paul Hach, Joe Hada, even Hal Werner or any of the council vote "NO" on an issue....any issue.
How much money do the utility companies have in reserve? Did you see your water bill is going up next month for the third straight year? Don't worry though, it's going to automatically go up for the next three, yet at the same time council is told Elm St. is fourth or fifth on the list of bad pipelines. Wonder if any who read this blog live where-ever those other lines are?
The reason this practice goes on is because you and I let it. The city administration seems to be preoccupied with finance awards, along with double-dipping department heads.
How much money do we have to fix what's broken?

Have most of you had your utility bills estimated lately? Even the U.S. Post office delivered during the bad weather.

Please explain the above statement? What financial award and how much was it?

The Certificate of Achievement for excellence in Finance Reporting. For the 23rd year.
Check story Feb.17,2011 News-Herald.
I have no idea if they paid for it?

Yes, my electric bill has been estimated for the last two months. I cannot figure out why.

I was shocked that Flock did not get a second. I was also shocked that in the middle of his presentation with the horrible dark brown water filter from a resident's home (after only three weeks), that Fodor kept interrupting him to cover the city's butt. I find Fodor more and more shocking. He's just "with" Hada, etc., he cares nothing about the citizens. Sad to say, he is exactly who I thought he was going to be. And notice not a second from Werner, either. He's useless. Maybe he would be worth something as an umbrella stand for McMahon. Nor was there a second from DiNallo.

I can't imagine having that kind of water coming into my home for one day, let alone all this time. I am in total agreement with you that council should drink that water during the next council meeting, and then tell us how good they feel about that. (Flock gets a pass.) There is just no excuse for that kind of water to be going into these peoples' homes. Shocking.

Does the Elm street person have all new water lines from, the street to there house and all new in the house, if not she cannot say it is the main.....

Why would you put in all new water lines if the one in the street was 91 years old? What shape do you think that 6 inch water main is in?

1. Wasn't that water sample taken after problem? It would be like me complaining about bad water on a day the hydrants are flushed, right?
2. Just who in the city is "double-dipping"? Who's retired and come back to collect a paycheck?
3. Its infrastructure not intrastructure.
4. Its umpteenth time, not umpteen. Umpteenth: last in an indefinitely numerous series
5. With what money do you people want things fixed with? You complain about everything but say heck no to an increase to fix things. Can't have your cake & eat it too.

The city owes AMP OHIO 2.7Million.

If you want to find money to repair the water lines on ELM ST then maybe start by looking to HMG and their inefficiencies in the administration.

Furthermore, bad news comes in three's.

What are they?
The lost money on the take and pay contract, with AMP

Cobblestone residents, still waiting for the EMS times to improve.

The decaying and rotten water lines on ELM ST.

Logic states that these can be remedied, but the big three don't see logic.

To 12:51: It's kind of pompous to point out the typos of another, isn't it? I mean, who cares? Nobody is typing very carefully.

When were the people of Painesville asked for money and said no, except for the schools this last time?

As an aside: Maybe if McMahon and city council quit losing millions of our dollars over and over, there would BE a little more money available. Know what I mean, jellybean? Jellybean: a bean-shaped candy with a firm, gelatinous filling.

Thank you for correcting me.
2. The water department head.
5. We have had three years of increases with three more to follow, Any private utility could not get a waiver from it's board of directors the way council provides the city. If you can't provide a service get out of the business.
Wolverine if this was your water line would you be so patience?

Interesting post and comments, Term.

My water has been cloudy for the past two months. But I don't drink it, and haven't gotten around to calling. Hmmm...

If nothing else, the city sewer folks must be asleep or intentionally treating my street like second-class citizens. Every house on my street had storm sewer backup in their house a couple weeks ago. The city only came down after someone complained. When they opened the manhole cover, water was almost all the way to the top. Apparently, there is a known problem with the storm sewer at Walnut & Meadow and they try to snake it every so often. Not often enough, though...since I was squeegee-ing the basement out at 4am...let me tell you, THAT is a treat!

Also, speaking of bad roads, did anyone else find that their street was completely ignored? We had the snowstorm days ago, and never did see a city plow come down my street. Then the sidewalk guy came down and plowed the Walnut sidewalks which made pulling out from Meadow Lane impossible. I personally assisted five or six cars over the past couple days. My car (which is all-wheel drive) got stuck this afternoon while I was leaving for work.

Even today, we had a foot of slush in the intersection. I left a voicemail for Hal Werner and then spoke with PPD and they said that the road department refused to come out because they didn't want to pay weekend overtime. GREAT! Here's a concept - not paying overtime is fiscally responsible, but it's not really responsible to ignore your taxpayers by NOT DOING YOUR JOB!

By the time I got my car unstuck and got to work, Hal got back to me. I lodged both complaints. It was a 10-minute phonecall. He promised to followup and I believe he will. But I'm sure the bosses of the appropriate departments will respond with a bunch of lip service.

In other news, a little birdy tells me that two folks are v-e-r-y interested in the Ward 2 election this year. One of them is a fresh face, the other one is a name from a recent election. I'm not naming names, but as I know both of these people I can say...this will be an interesting 2012!

We had old steel water lines in our house, and going out to the main line under the street, we live on Liberty St. we had lots of rust and pressure problems, after we had new copper lines put inside our house and run out to the Main line (it is an old Iron line)
we have no more rust (unless there is a problem down the line and that goes away when the city repairs it.

ADAM thanks for the kiss of death as of 3:00am this morning many homes on Cedarbrook have water in their basements...again! City crews closed off a part of Cedarbrook and along with PCFD have been pumping out basements. Talk about Groundhog Day. People will clean and disinfect their basements, throw out items and wait for the next time.
Painesville would rather spend the money this way instead of solving the problem. To Ward III save your dime don't waste your time calling your councilman.

The city plowes were out all weekend, I saw them pushing snow out of intersctions and roads, the snow was tough to push, why don't you call the street dept. not Hal or ppd ? and about overtime I think they do an over lap type of shift in the winter time to cover the plowing.

6:20 I could never understand that Millstone and Gristmill were at flood risk yet Steele, Grand River Ave. and other homes down there weren't?
Sorry I'm presently pumping out a basement.
Must of not been anything in it for city hall?

Anonymous - February 28, 2011 6:27 AM, you're just plain wrong. The City plows were not out on Saturday or Sunday (until Sunday night at 10:30pm). As far as my chain of command is concerned, my first call WAS to the street department. When I got no answer, Hal was the next step and I left a voicemail for him. PPD was the next step and even THEY couldn't convince the road department to come out.

If the street department isn't going to listen to the police department, what makes you think they'll listen to John Q. Citizen?

And if you don't believe me, here is a picture I took yesterday while leaving for work:
http://bit.ly/hsnWU3
The picture doesn't do justice to how deep that snow really is. It was way deeper the day before. I got my AWD car stuck in this, though. You can see the van on the other side of the street and tell how deep the snow is in the street. But still, remember, half of the stuff had melted away at this point. Would your car be able to get out easily?

INTERESTING

No...the water never made it to the river....it found a bunch of basements first.I spent some quality time in one yesterday too and I truly feel bad for the senior that lives there. I got to go home to a dry apartment (I live on the 2nd floor) but she had to bundle up until the heating guy can come out today and replace the computer board in her furnace and restart the hot water tank. Not cheap I'm sure. I also heard that there were people charging 500.00 to clean out a basement, which I think is outrageous. Hope Ms. Rita gives these folks a break and at least does an extra pick-up for all the trash at no charge. Wouldn't seem fair that she could go that extra mile for Millstone folks and leave other taxpaying residents hung out to dry (pun intended).

The 11:13 pictures are links directly to Facebook URLs, which are safe. They were shortened using bit.ly, which is proven as a safe URL shortener.

I've loaded them safely on my personal computer and my work computer. So if you have a bug on your computer, I highly doubt it came from me.
