"WHAT DID YOU LEARN IN SCHOOL TODAY"

pete seeger

I only bring this up because all the schools (not just Painesville) have been closed for the last two days. Tuesday seemed a stretch but today it was 40 degrees?
Now I know administrators will err on the side of caution for safety's sake but the last two days seem to have been over the top.
Parents work and they have to line up sitters at the last minute to watch children if there is no school. I don't want to be one of those old fuddy duddys that tell kids I walked 10 miles to school and 12 miles home. I don't remember any days like yesterday and today that the schools closed.
It was interesting that yesterday was the first time in twelve years Chicago closed its schools.
I also have noticed the weather reporting is getting more intense with each reporter and news channel. You have to wonder how much influence this has on deciding to shut schools down. Any other thoughts on the subject?

Well, I seem to remember a student hit by a car when they stopped plowing the sidewalks. Think it was on State St. Can't remember if student was killed or not. They started plowing again.

On a side note, doesn't stop people from walking in street. Snow, ice, people and cars don't mix on the roads. We need to stop this.

I've been to Chicago and it's a nice place to live.

Yesterdays snow day was a bit of a stretch, my children could have gone to school.

Today on the other hand is a different story. The sidewalks this morning were a sheet of ice.

If Hanlon hadn't called school off this morning, my children would have stayed home.

The kids should have been in school both days, along with leaving it up to parents to decide. Every situation is different. We're starting to raise a bunch of wousses.
I got the call at around 5:30 am what was different then at 11:00pm?
Maybe the problems could be our administrators and teachers live to far away, truth?
Hey, They put the 6.5 ballot on the May 3, election thanks for the heads-up.

10:57 Please explain why we are having school this morning? There's a lot more wind ,go check the temps?
I never thought of it but if your teachers don't live that close to Painesville, Leroy, Chardon, it's hard getting to work. Even our Supers got a drive.

Wind chill,ice????
Please explain why so many children were playing outside yesterday?
Now all the snow days are gone.

The children were playing outside yesterday because the ice melted. If you were outside when the children would have been walking to school, you would have seen everything covered in ICE. My dog couldn't even walk on the sidewalks let alone children.

They probably could have gotten away with a delay, but that would have still counted against their calamity days.

There shouldn't be ANY snow days at all...if schools have to close due to inclement weather, the kids should have to make it up at the end of the year.

The simple fact its 5 more days staff got paid because it snowed!

The news stations in Cleveland should be ashamed of themselves.
"Snowmageddon"
"Snowpocalypse"
Just some of the terms used to predict the weather.
No wonder the people in charge closed school.

I did...well worth the time to watch. Hope the school board takes the time as well....they could use some lessons in thinking outside the box.

I'm sure glad our schools are doing so poorly, this is taking the heat off the city and all the bashing it normally gets. At least you are an equal opportunity annoyer.

I doubt there would not be a need for your blog. Even if this town were as perfect as the near-perfect Celebration, you would find just as many faults as now.
Just cant figure out why someone as unhappy as you are has stayed around for so long. Guess misery loves company.

4:37 Misery loves company, or facts are facts. The two city adminisrations love people like yourself. You would rather attack the messenger then the people who are driving this city down.
Keep believing everything is great.

"You would rather attack the messenger"

Interesting, You are against illegal immigrants and you attack the rally team.

You are upset about Becks' petitions and you attack the board of elections.

You are against higher taxes (no $) and you attack the tea party.

You see a fire truck and you attack the fire department.

You are against the city manager and council president and you go after city employees.

You have a right to question people and boards that are funded by taxpayer money. But do you have the same right for a private person.

Did you ever wonder what your rumors and innuendos to innocent or well meaning hard working people? You may find fault in some things such as AMP Ohio but create hardships or problems for others.

Wonder what the teachers think of your fight against the levy. What about the average city employee. What if someone kept telling your employer that you were doing illegal activities. Don't you think after a while he would start having second thoughts about keeping you on?

Maybe 5:08 and 6:08 have a point.

obviously you give me more credit then I think I deserve. What I am against is wasteful spending. The teachers? Tell me should I care more about the teachers and the administration than I do the students? Laying off para-professional and cutting programs plus adding to the number in class size. Sorry I'm with the students. it's more important to me then a teacher getting a raise.
Attacking the Fire Department? Where do you get this idea? There is a very simply solution to solving the problem at Cobblestone yet the administration does not want to admit to there failure. Am I against the Fire Department, or the leadership of council the administration or someone charge that goes along with the whole fiasco? When a unit is out at Tri-Point and another is at Cobblestone, whos going to take care of a call on Walnut St.? Sorry I'm with the residents.I have lost complete faith in Ms. McMahon along with Dr. Hanlon as a private citizen I have a right to make these ideas public whether you like them or not. Tea Party I could care less what their agenda is. Do not put me in any group. Tea Party, Rally team I have a forum that lets people express theit opinion not some groups.
If city or school employees aren't doing their jobs I go after the people holding the purse strings. Mrs. Becks seemed to have solved her on her own. Without any help from council or the administration.
I only can hope I cause some hardship to the people that put us in this position.

As do the rest of the people or groups in Painesville.

You have your agenda and others have theirs. Let's ask ourselves a few questions/

Do illegal immigrants have a right to free education? Do people without children have a duty to pay for school levies? They say that almost half of the people in this country pay no income tax. Do they have a right to vote for tax increases for the ones that do pay taxes.

Everyone has an opinion on the things above. Right now you seem to be after the teachers AND the school board. They have to realize that money is tight and cut back. Money doesn't solve everything. On the other hand, the parents and the students have to step up to the plate and do the work too.

I have not put you in any group. But I am saying you are against both sides of the examples I mentioned above. I guess all these other people have nothing to bring to the table. Maybe it is time to step down from the soap box and listen to all sides of the problem. I'm not saying I have all the answers but you don't either.

Maybe it is time to listen to people before attacking them. Work with people or groups instead of attacking. Going to city council and school board meetings are only half of the equation. To effect change, maybe it is time to join a committee, group or association. Get in on the planning stages instead of just complaining after the fact.

To 7:13pm, you are entirely correct in what you wrote! But please, don't encourage the negative people from this blog to start joining the groups around town!

Today we learned more of the financial status of the schools. Had to sit and eat our lunch while listening. Implied the bargaining units were needing to be spoken to about consessions but not once did we hear what administration was willing to give up or back. So we learned a lesson on how not to share, thats what we learned today.

I would rather volunteer to give up something when the handwriting is on the wall rather than have someone dictate to me what's going to be taken away. The administration is short-sighted to say the least...milking it for all its worth before they are forced to sacrifice. And to my way of thinking, if I were making about 130,000 a year with a ton of perks I could give up 25% and still live very comfortably.
