"A CLASS ACT"

August 12, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Painesville City Councilwoman Arlene L. Becks:

There will be a public appearance and an announcement at the downtown Painesville

Gazebo, Thursday, August 13, at 1:00 p.m.

Two-term Painesville City Councilwoman Arlene L. Becks, will address the residents of Painesville , Ohio , about her recent petition ruled invalid by the Lake County Board of Elections. The fatal flaw was never done with the intent to defame the law or for her to deny herself opportunity to run for her third term for Painesville City Council.

Having been elected for eight productive years by the voters is a privilege and an honor. Councilwoman Becks will continue to work with the city of Painesville on special issues, the city charter, social events, and economic development within the city. The doors of opportunity will again open in the future for the voters and supporters to have their opportunity to re-elect Councilwoman Arlene Becks, who has been a voice for the people, and has worked for the people with proven results.

Painesville city has a slate of five candidates for the up coming November election. These individuals will have the opportunity to represent the city of Painesville to help move the city of Painesville forward.

Arlene L. Becks

Painesville City Councilwoman

440-358-9955

An open letter from Councilwoman Arlene Becks to the citizens of Painesville.

August 10, 2009

My Dear Supporters:

I thank you for all your support during my eight working and productive years as your Painesville City Councilwoman.

You the voter have entrusted me to represent you on all local, state and federal government issues that have come before me. I believe I have done that with your best interest in mind and with proven results. I could have not been able to do my job without your vote year after year.

It is unfortunate that I have to inform you as of today August 10, 2009, based on information from the Lake County Board of Elections, I did not circulate and collect enough valid registered voter signatures to place my name on the upcoming November 3, 2009 general election ballot. This final decision was based on the secretary of states O.R.C. 3501.38, 3513.261 and 3513.263.

Below are listed the infractions that caused me not to be able to run for re-election in November 2009.

The Nominating Petition Fatal Flaws are listed below:

A check mark is used when the voter is registered at the address on the petition and the signature matches. The number in the circle on the face of each petition next to the initials is the number of good signatures on the petition.

1. Voter is registered in another district and not eligible to vote on the candidate or
issue. (WD)

2. Not registered at the address on file with the Board of Election or we use NRA
when we can’t recognize a signature, but the signature does not match any
signature registered at the address listed. (NRA)

3. Bad Date. If the voter signed and dated prior to the date the candidate declared
their candidacy. (BD)

4. Signature is printed and does no match what is on file. (NG)

5. Not a registered voter. (NR)

6.Circulator signed the petition they circulated. You cannot witness your own signature. (CIRC)

7.Lined out is not part of the verification process.

Although I won’t be on this year’s ballot, I encourage everyone to continue to register to vote and vote so that you can continue to help make a difference in Painesville.

Again, I thank you for your past, current and future support during my tenure on the Painesville City Council. I will continue to represent Painesville, and be available for various projects that will help promote a healthy, vibrant and growing city.

Humbly submitted,

Who is They?????? This is Arlene's own fault. No one did this to her. No one punched her when she was down. Her solicitor and ultimately Arlene herself are the only ones to blame here.

That leaves Joe Hada as the only inbumbent running, hes going to have to answer for alot of things, I have two or three things that he can explain

The one plus in all this for Arlene is she won't have to be questioned by Joe Hada on why she voted the way she did. Is it just me or does Mr. Hada act as if you must always agree with him? Look at Painesville Joe are you really that proud of your decisions?

Again, the voters elect the council members. Not council. THEY didn't file Arlene's petitions, she did. If she chooses to run again she can as long as her petitions are valid. THEY can't stop her or anyone else from running. "We the People" are the only ones with the power to vote someone into or vote someone out of office. My guess is that Anonymous 11:36 and 3:29 doesn't understand the election process and probably hasn't ever voted. Just looking for someone else to blame.

Badger, I think that poster was stateing some at the front table really won't miss her. Come to a council meeting and watch some of the facial expressions. They don't try to hard not to show their distain for her.
I don't even think some of them realize there doing it. Its really unbecoming a public offical.

Thursday at 1pm?, whats wrong, she doesn't want those of us who work to be there?, she just wants some kind of publicity because thats when the county lunch crowd is out there.

This is ridiculous. She didn't properly file her petition. Her fault and no one else. Since she was not able to complete this task correctly, I'm thinking it is not such a bad thing that she will not be able to run again. If she can't pay attention to the paperwork for reelection, it makes me think she doesn't pay too much attention to things she votes on as a member of counsil.

She should keep her comments to 3 minutes... maybe then we could understand..."Help me understand... 30 minutes later..UGH!!

The people of Painesville have been complaining about their city's elected and hired officials for years. The amount of negative campaigning and things discussed on several blogs about Painesville are just amazing. All you hear is we need to clean house.

Well folks, here is your chance. With only one incumbent running, Painesville will get 2 new council members. Time for the residents of the city to get involved and meet and learn about all the candidates running for the 3 at large positions. If you can't vote intelligently, then you will have no room to talk or complain after the election.

Things in this country need to change. We need to get all of our elected officials to realize that they were elected to serve the people. They work for us. Just as it is our civic duty to question our leaders, it is also our civic duty to vote intelligently. Maybe it's time to hold our representatives to the oath of office they swore to when they took office.

So, before we just vote for change, let's make sure it is change for the better. Voting just for change is no better than just "do something even if it is wrong. Let's use our right to vote to make things better rather than just sitting back and complaining.

Arlene Becks invalid petiton was unfortunate and I'm sure she has learned a lesson as we all have. The election process must be above reproach. Rules must apply to all candidates. I commend her for not contesting or asking for special treatment in this matter.

3 minutes, you think 30 minutes is bad, just think how John Murphy would tie up a mtg.

mr. murphy only wants answers to questions that everyone else is afraid to ask. why sit on council week after week and never open your mouth about any issues, that pertain to the city that you live in? i would literally go insane if i couldnt ask a question and not GET AN ANSWER. so in that regard, you go mr. murphy. and we, the citizens of painesville that are going to vote for you this nov. 3rd. are glad you are asking questions.!!!!!!!!!! a very concerned citizen who is old enough to vote.

murphy the friend of the landloards

business people know business people! so post 1039, what is wrong with knowing the landlords in the city? they pay taxes. you should worry about the ones that are non-profit businesses, which are tax-exempt.so, if a landlord wants to help mr.murphy change the city, i say, go for it. A LANDLORD

At August 16, 2009 at 7:35 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

Murphy is a friend of the Landlords? Please tell me who on council or running for council that doesn't have a friend whos a landlord. I've asked you in the past for your solution and all you tell me is whos friends with the landlords.
