"THE GREATEST GENERATION"

JUNE 6,1944
D-DAY
"THIS IS THE MOMENT FOR WHICH YOU WERE BORN FOR"

Watched the 65th Anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy and probably the turning point of WWII. The bravery of the American Soldier on that day will only grow as time marches on.
A generation of people that grew up during the "Great Depression" fighting for the Country and away of life they believed in.
Any of us who were not there will never understand the Hell these soldiers went through. I myself have a very hard time watching the first half hour of the movie "Saving Private Ryan" probably as close as you can come to the actions of that day.
Only about two million veterans from WWII are still with us and we lose about a thousand a day now most are in their 80's or 90's Make it a point to thank one before its to late.
My father view on today's soldier? He told me a couple of years ago, about how dedicated you must be to leave the battlefield and return two, and three times as some in the Military do now, no one wants to return to Hell.
He also told me the joy we received after the war when he was guarding German Officers, and their disbelief that they had been defeated by these American Muts. Howe could we lose to this bunch of rag tag drafted bunch? He told me it probably haunted them to their death. Good always win over evil.
Post your stories.

My Dad once told me about being in basic training at there camp was also a German POW camp. The Germans would laugh at the American's traning and in broken english tell the soldiers what they thought their life expectant will be in combat. My father could never understand why the non-coms and the instructors let them do this, until he was marching through France and remembered their laughter and keep thinking not me Jerry. After the war he thought maybe the drill instructors wisdom was to let the young G.I.'s hear the chants. He claimed it saved his life.

My father who was a vet in the Army Air Corp. before there was an Air Force. He was stationed as a ground crew member at a base in England.
He was very upset when he found out the government was using torture, and water boarding in this war on terrior. I told him its a different world then over 60 years ago. He told me it was not that people are people. He told me the U.S. Air Corp. only flew day missions for the reason they only wanted to hit the planned bomb sites not civilian housing ,schools, hospitals. If for any reason, cloud cover ect. they couldn't hit the chosen site they were not just allowed to release the bombs just anywhere. Alot of B-17 were taken down with out dropping their bomb load. He told me the Germans and even the British did not follow these rules, but thats not reason enough for us to change the way we flew our missions. Maybe alot more Americans 65 years ago believed that if you did the right things God would be on your side. Don't get into the mud with the pigs he always has reminded me.

I knew when this post about torture came up, it would raise the hair on someones back.
Finally waterboarding is torture. The U.S. Military calls it torture. The Geneva Convention calls it torture. We prosecuted the Japanese Military for torture after WWII. The only three people I know that say its not, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and Rush Limbaugh. We should ask all three to be waterboard and see if they still think its not torture. The person was making a point that his/her father had a stong belief in God, and not to lower your standards to the evil enemys, because in the end good wins over evil.
Would it be alright to torture a persons child to get information from them even if the child knew nothing, or does the end always justify the means? Tell me where do you draw the line.

Funny you mentioned Rush, Sean, and Glenn I'll add another Dick. The total of these four in Military service to this country? ZERO.... Yes these people are the ones that know it all.

Waterboarding is not torture. Our marines undergo waterboarding in their training.>>

All American Soldiers who go through SERE training are water boarded. But they are able to stop it with a word. It is called DOR. Dropped on Request. That means that they have control over the training, they have the ability to take as much as they can and stop. What would make it torture is that when they ask to stop they are told no and the process would continue. Up until it is forced on them it is training.

Agree with Anonymous above. All US military personal who might get caught behind enemy line go through SERE training. Waterboarding and other extreme means are used in the training. They must sign releases beforehand. This is what our military has to look forward to if captured.

The days of countries abiding by the rules and civilized methods are long gone. Look what Japan did to the Chinese and the allies in WWII. What about Hitler and the Jews. Women and children are now strapping bombs to the bodies and blowing up innocent people all over the world. You have a group hijack planes and fly them into buildings and kill over 3000 innocent people. Captured soldiers, reporters and workers are getting beheaded. Where does it stop.

I'm against killing as much as the next guy, but when innocent people are the targets, I lose any sympathy I had. If it saves even one solders life or the life of an innocent man, woman or child then so be it. Who knows when it might hit someone you know. These people are nothing more than murderers. They want to kill as many people as possible. War is hell. Countries have always killed anyone not in uniform as spies.

We imprison or use the death penalty for our criminals, so why don't these people deserve the same.

It's easy to be compassionate as long as it doesn't effect you. Wait until YOU become the target.

If you enjoy freedom then you must thank a serviceman. Do it today and everyday.

I don't know about you, but I was offended when British PM Brown said Obama Beach. An insult to all the brave men who fought on Omaha Beach. We owe them our Freedom. Thank a service man always.
