I just remembered a Christmas long ago due to a pajamagram commercial I heard on the radio this week.
The year was 1955 television was in its infancy but Mattel, Hasbro, and Remco toy companies had already made inroads into my "consumerism".
The year before my grandmother came to Painesville from the "Old World" to be with our family and in very short order she became my caregiver, Grandma was called Omi [ohme.] Right around Thanksgiving of that year she called me into her room and with tape measure in hand she explained she was going to make my Christmas present. Within five minutes I was on my way to whatever a five year old could get into.
Christmas Day arrived and Toyland of Painesville did not disappoint.I remember after all the important presents were opened I got to the second teir presents. Omi had a box that I opened with a pair of blue pajama's I have no idea whether they were cotton or wool but I thanked her with a kiss and a hug.
Later that night as I was going to bed my mother suggested I wear my new pajama's . I put them on and they fit perfect I thought boy these are warm and comfortable. I wore those PJ's until I literally grew out of them.
Over 50 years later I can't remember what Mattel toy or any other gift for that matter, but I stil remember those pajama's

Here is a sad Christmas story, I was talking to a young woman today, she said she was not doing so good this year,(money wise)so she took her kids to the Salvation Army to get some toys, she was very happy, she got 1 small gift for each kid, what did bother her was there were 4 Latino familys in front of her, they each left with new bikes (there were a lot of bikes there) a lady overheard us talking and she said she heard the same thing from some other people around town, someone told her the person in charge was a Latino woman ?
The woman that got the gifts for her kids was very greatfull for what she got, but she thought it was wierd how things were going.
I hope this is not going on there.

I also hope its not going on there, I find it hard to believe but I will check it out. JT. here's where you can help out. You check to.
One way to find out who is to ask, who received the bikes?
In Saturays News_Herald there were at least three good aricles on the editorial page alone. One was a story about the JEDD. another a letter to the editor about why we are in this economic crisis, and David Gata wrote an article "U.S. can't save the world." One statement caught my eye. A country whose President celebrates the takeover of its own culture by Latin America's as Bush has done, and whose elected officials feel more empathy for the citizens other than their own, is indeed wayward. Furthermore, how do we expect all of these new immigrants to asimilate if our traditions are contantly denigrated in the name of multiculturalism, the belief that all cultures are equal? We are killimg the goose that laid the golden egg through misplaced compassion and utopian thinking.
Sonething our City and School officials should think about.

Made a few calls this morning also got two I feel pretty comfortable that everything is on the up and up at the Salvation Army gift giving. Someone had received a call earlier to look into this and all it really is just a large amount of Hispanic children from larger families, The children are given packets and the gifts are numbered I can't see anything wrong going on, and I'm glad to tell everyone that. Merry Christmas.

Term, you again just blew it by blaming school officials for something they are forced by law to deal with.

The school does not choose who they educate, they are required by law to educate every child that walks through that door. Every child is also supposed to pass a state mandated test.

If people like you would get off your holier than though throne and actually go ask the school "what can I do to help?" we might actually see our school ratings go up some day.

How about you shut down this joke of a blog and you, Karen, JT, Charter Lady and all the other narrow minded posters go spend some time tutoring children.

At December 21, 2008 at 7:03 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

The school does not choose who they educate. But they seem to choose how to educate them. 50% grading policy is a joke. Now Harvey gets money for raffle gifts for students with good attendance.
How about explaining this is what is expected of them.
What is the percentage of Hispanios that start 9th grade at Harvey Graduate in 4years with all their proficiency tests passed, heck how about the Caucasian, and African-American children as well?
We might actually see our school ratings go up some day. Fat chance on the course your on now.
How about you shutdown that joke of a school system you have. You have new building start from scratch maybe your administrators and staff will send their children here. Attack me and the blog. but please respect the people who post here. Remember you came here, right.
Oh! and have your Happy Holiday.

I, too, am not satisfied that everything is above board concerning the gift giving at the Salvation Army. Does anyone know someone on the Board? Maybe they would have access to information that we don't. We just have what we are told, and they are certainly not going to tell us that they give preferential treatment to the hispanics. I also have donated much in the past, but I will not do so until this and other irregularities are explained or corrected.

Don't all the hispanic children receive gifts from the HOLA program? You are only supposed to be on one gift program but they seem to be allowed on as many as they can.

I agree, G.E. No kettles for me either. I will help my neighbor who I know is hurting and not abusing the system. I will not contribute to an organization who is not being responsible with my donation.

This is a sad Christmas story. I would figure the Mexican children would get the small gifts? For what reason can you come up with that it would be the other way around? Who passes out the gifts? What is HOLA and what do they have to do with the Salvation Army?
I wonder if the person running this site really is satisfied with the answers or he knows to persue this will just lead to a dead end?
The Salvation Army should release who got the bikes?

Just a little story from our part of town. Latino/Hispanic homes with children who own some pretty pricey bikes. Plain and simple bikes all the way up to the ones that replecate ninja motorcycles. They leave all of these bikes out in the drive and yard with no protection.
Three times now, my husband and I have thwarted the theft of these bikes. The ones who choose to steal have a method. One riding a bike and one just walking. They scout the neighborhood, pass by the home where bikes are just sitting around. Go down the street and then circle back. Bam, the walker runs in and takes a bike, walks it to the street then the two of them ride off into the sunset. Witnessed one day a whole group of bike riders and walkers going way down the street. Within 30 minutes the whole group came back down the street. Guess what, there was not one walker at all; they all had bikes and stopped/gathered at a street corner yipping and laughing for their find.
The youth that participated in all of these acts were of minority status.
Could this be a partial reason why so many of another heritage status received new bikes?
We have consistenly tried to explain to the Hispanic families that you cannot leave anything out in the open, unprotected, as there are others who will definitely take/salvage for whatever needs they may have.
Sad!! Sad that this city has so many children that are misguided and are directed by their parents to go and take what-ever you can to transform it into money that will help our family. No, transform it into money that supports habits. Oh thank you for bringing money home for us. Yet these children do not have breakfast at home (rush to school to eat) they have lunch at school (unless school is closed) and where is the dinner that you said we would have? I have witnessed this type of situation way too often. I cannot divulge, at this time, how/when nor the time frame that this horrible atmosphere presented itself.

Both of us have tried so hard to explain protections; it has gone to deaf ears. Deaf ears, because the language barrier is out of control. So many countries in this world have gone sour because they have allowed multitudes of different languages to exist.Read the History.
No one can work together for the good of anything if the choice is to not communicate in the language of your new found home and surroundings. Nothing good will come of those that prey on others who do not understand.

Did Painesville stop plowing streets this winter. I drove through this morning to go to a local business, and the streets were horrible!

My family is white and my kids have had their bikes stolen right off our porch. We have had the locks cut off. So white children need new bikes too. This does not justify the Salvation Army's strategy of giving the bikes to the latinos. I would like an investigation into this. If all up and up, ok. But we need more than just someone's word. I would like to see a list of just who got the bikes and see the percentage of whites and blacks to latinos. At least remove the appearance of special treatment.

Not even when TERM tries to put a post out there to maybe foster a bit of goodwill can the hoards stave off their need for blood. TERM created a post that maybe would allow you to enjoy your season a bit and brag about your family or friends a bit here and some still are so negative. Glass half full, not all but some.

TERM, I remember coming down the stairs as a kid and not having much all year long but my parents always did their best to make a happy Christmas for us. I remember getting a bike one Christmas the year that I discovered the truth about Santa Claus. I was riding the bike all through the house and my normally over cautious parents were letting me do it, I felt so free and wish that I am able to make my kids feel the same simple joys in life. Tip of the day, "Don't ever take a hard right turn on deep pile carpet". You will go down like a bag of nickles. JT

Urban Myth? Yes this could be except three latino ladies are in charge of gift distrubution? coincidence, or a twist of fate? Doesn't matter no more cash for the kettle. Why?
What kind of people give a $100.00 toy to one kid and a $6.99 toy to another? Promoting it like a lottery.

Remember that this preferential treatment is not just at the holiday time. This goes on year round with our donations. Example, the soccer program compared with the baseball program. Everyone needs to reconsider where they make their donations. I will be avoiding Salvation Army like the plague.

"This does not justify the Salvation Army's strategy of giving the bikes to the latinos. I would like an investigation into this."

This and all other comments concerning this wonderful charitable organization make this site a joke. I know you have a dislike of hispanic people but you need to get it under control. This is very enlightening about the people who post here and I hope people remember that when they read posts in other topics as well.

At December 26, 2008 at 2:48 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe the belief you have in the Salvation Army being above reproach is what the joke really is. They will not answer simple questions. Why?

At December 26, 2008 at 2:54 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

If they were giving them out to other groups of people, and not to some, we would still like to know why ?

At December 30, 2008 at 10:16 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have no dislike for hispanic people. I do have a dislike for illegal aliens no matter what race, and I have a dislike for a program that gives preferential treatment to any group over another. And in this case it appears that preferential treatment was given to the hispanics. I am looking into this. I have a call in to two members of the Salvation Army board. We'll see what they say.
