" IS THIS JUST THE START?'

Someone has already mentioned that they heard about the "layoff" at Avery- Dennison
[Fasson] in Painesville on the radio this morning. There were also stories in todays News- Herald and Cleveland Plain Dealer.
The story in the Plain Dealer had more information than the News- Herald.
The Headline
36 jobs eliminated at Avery Dennison
"Where severing them from the company" spokeswoman Heather Marks said "We don't anticipate calling them back to work." WOW person needed at Fasson.
This statement made me all warm and fuzzy wishing I was part of the Avery Dennison extended family. 14 days before Christmas not "laid off" but "severed."
This in the time of "Comfort and Joy."
My thoughts and prayers are with these 36 people and their families. Hope they all land on their feet.
Heather also mentioned freezing merit pay increases, cutting travel and entertainment.
This comment surprised me. Painesville City Manager Rita McMahon and other officals had heard nothing about the layoffs by mid-afternoon. Marks said she would notify Cathy Bieterman, the city's economic development coordinator, while employees were discussing their fates with supervisors and human resources officers.
Now I wonder why a Public Relations professional with some expertise in notifing the Press, would not send a heads up to city hall? I wonder what kind of relationship exists between Avery and Painesville? About two years ago at a town hall meeting a former Fasson employee asked her if she knew about demolishing the new office building on Chester St. She at that time reassured everyone no buildings were being torn down. Within two months, no more building.
You have to wonder what kind of relationship exsist betwen the city and its businesses?
Oh yes, Heather also added "It's always a very painful thing to do, telling people they have to leave the company." AH! my soulmate.

Take it from someone who 's on the inside. There is very little dialogue between the two of us, and it's usually pretty chilly'

Why not start a panic! Its less than 3% of their work force in Lake County. Why would Avery give Paimesville a courtesy call in the first place, theres not even smoke here?

I do not think that business minds would think it important to contact the City in which they reside to advise them of their plans. It really has no bearing on anything to be honest. The City would not notify the County if they intended on laying off would they? I think that a decision like this at the end of the year is terrible, common, but terrible. I understand that they need to cut the fat to clear the end of year budget issues, but, I think that planning for such a thing, if possible would be better. I know that no employer wants to dump work force before the holidays, but the people that really make the decisions never have look those people in the face. My best friend worked, key word "worked" in manufacturing. They were a supervisor of a division and were told to cut a percentage of their work force. They did, having to drop the axe on about fifteen employee's Then two weeks later, got called into the boss's office and axed also. Come to think of it, I don't think they advised the Township of the lay offs, can you believe the gall of them, and can you feel my sarcasm. Anyway, there is no rhyme or reason, it is all greed and solvency. Merry Christmas! JT

JT. The poster above you, sorta hit it on the head. If you have or want to have good relationships with each other a "courtesy" call is a good idea. Instead of everyone at city hall looking like deer caught in headlights. Defend all you want, but somethings wrong.
Watch where the produce your buying comes from JT. it may surprise you.

See this is what upsets me when I read this site:
"Instead of everyone at city hall looking like deer caught in headlights."
Why are they even in the headlights? Because you put them there? It is not for the city to be concerned with the hiring and firing of workers in private business. What are we, communists? They don't need city approval or even tell the city. This is no big deal that there was no courtesy call. Seems like a waste of time. What was the city going to do even if they knew in advance?

"Defend all you want, but somethings wrong."
Because you assume so. You want something to be wrong. Normal business practice is not to call the city. For there not to be a call only tells me everything is correct and normal. A call would make me worry of worse cuts to come or a need for aid from the city.

"Watch where the produce your buying comes from JT. it may surprise you."
What is this an inside joke? You arouse suspicion and insinuations of wrong doing to get people excited but don't tell us anything. This site is full of insinuations that something is wrong. Its like a sensational news teaser at the top of the hour but the storynever comes or if it does it is a dud and really nothing to be concerned about.

TERM, I hear what you are saying as to the "courtesy" call idea. I just do not see that type of thing happening regularly in truth. I get it, that a business should clue you in if they plan to lay off or move or what-ever, but I think that practice is not common practice at all. Can you say Art Model? JT

At December 12, 2008 at 9:29 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

JT. Someone at Avery took the time to invite newspapers and other news outlets about the severings. No one wants to be blind-sided. Bussinesses, governments, ect. As far as Art Modell there was alot of bad blood between him and city leaders right? Remember Gateway issues and afew other reasons. JT. you sorta made my point.

No big deal? Then why did the reporters go to city hall? Sorry a courtesy is common among people who co-operate with each other it builds a bond. Will the city officials be at the ribbon-cutting at Air-Foil? What are we a communist country?
If your not watching country of origin on the food your buying, maybe it would be a good idea if you started!

"If your not watching country of origin on the food your buying, maybe it would be a good idea if you started!"
ooooo, the master of suspense lets loose another clue...
Come on, just say "well in case you didn't know some of the food sold at this particular place comes from this particular country." Then we can decide if it is a big deal and what consequences might come of it if the food turns out to be bad. No need to build it up like this. You say you are informative but you give no information.

"Sorry a courtesy is common among people who co-operate with each other it builds a bond."
Ok but I fail to see the bite this comment has. Even if it was a courtesy they might not have called because there is nothing the city can do.

"Someone at Avery took the time to invite newspapers and other news outlets about the severings."
How do you know who called the papers? Maybe it was a severed employee who was upset.

"What are we a communist country?"
I don't get the point you are trying to convey here. Wouldn't communist be where the government controls the business and who gets hired and fired? Seems like a non-communist country would operate just as it happened here: The company makes its own decisions without government approval and the government finds out later. Are you trying to make a point for me or you?

"What are we a communist country?" The reason I made that comment was that you or whoever commented said.
" It's not for the city to be concerned about the hiring and firing of employees in private business. What are we communists?"
I was saying its seems if a business has good news they are front and center telling us about the great co-operation between them. Watch when they run for re-election how they all contributed to getting Air-Foil to locate in Painesville. Secret is Reddi Kilowatt had more to do with them coming to town than any thing else, don't think for a momment it was the weather.
As far as the food last summer tomatoes were taken off the shelves because they were making people sick. After an investigation by the USDA we find out it was tomatoes fro Mexico, next thing you know China will have lead in our apple juice, just be careful what you purchase.
If you fail to see the "bite" in a certain comment I suggect you just ignore it.
In the next couple of months I hope the people in Painesville take a realistic look at some of the things that go on around here and decide what direction we want to go in.
I sick to my original statement something not right here.

Talk about short memories the hospitial never gave her a heads up on its closing either did it? Beverage companies leave after 60 years without a heads up and who else? What make our city manager so insulated from what goes on around town?
Ask people around town who she is some have no idea what she even looks like, this after having the job over 12 years.
No picture of her in the Painesville Pride, I can't see her mentioned on the city's web site.

Its only making the point that it is not common business practice that a business tell the city about this stuff.

"They never call you a liar have you noticed."

He is a misleader which is pretty close. He never gives concrete facts that can be proved to be wrong but he does give a ton of his suspicions. If I could prove, what is most likely true, that the city does not have bad blood with Avery, I would but right now it is only one of his creations/suspicions. Why do I have to prove him wrong? Why doesn't he have to prove himself right?
If I told you that because Lebron James hadn't made an appearance into the GM offices in 3 weeks then "something must be wrong here" You can't call me a liar but you could accuse of me misleading or trying to start something in the press because I don't like either him or the Cavs management.

It could also be seen as these businesses don't have alot of respect for the city and its administration. Remember she spent over $350,000 to keep the hospital here after they told the city goodby! Was that money well spent?
Well run citys have good communications between themselves and the businesses in their towns.

Prove him wrong if it bothers you that much.

"It could also be seen as"
This statement goes a long way in the discussion of what is fact and wht is rumor.

"Prove him wrong if it bothers you that much."
You missed it entirely. The point is that you can't prove him wrong if he is just creating his own conclusions based on unverified assumptions. Why doesn't he have to prove himself right? He is the one making the assertions/allegations. This is why this site gets described as whiners posting rumors and lacks any real respect.

Misleader? I was at the meeting when she assured the public that Avery had no intention of tearing buildings down. Was she wrong or misinformed?
She seems to not be in anyones loop?
