HisTORIC PAINESVILLE

From what I have heard the "DART" group has decided what is "Historic Downtown", a triangle that starts at General Paines statue at that little park at Washington and Mentor Ave. follows both roads down to State St. I wish this group all the luck and best wishes but......
What does this mean to the Y.M.C.A. mansion, Jackson St. School. The Railroad Station on Depot ST. and especially "Riders Inn" ?
I guess there "Pre-Historic"?

Term. There you go again starting your crap, why don't you give them a chance and see what they come up with before the great Term. starts in on how bad it is.

Never said it was bad, wished them luck. Its hard to put things in a box, square circle sometimes you might be better off not defining an area. Historic Painesville could be be anything south from the CSX Railroad tracks, and anything north of the NS Railroad tracks, but here I am defining an area.

The historical society has signs on tons of buildings. Maybe they are only deciding what is in the "Downtown" area. Just because they aren't in this zone does not mean they are being disregarded as not historic. They are plenty historic, but when I think of downtown I'll admit I don't think of Riders Inn or the YMCA. "Downtown" for me just doesn't go that far but that doesn't mean that in my mind Riders Inn or the YMCA are not just as historic if not more historic that the buildings with a different address.

Designating an area to be "Historic" is a good idea, because it will allow that area to be free from the garbage. In a historic district, changes have to be approved and they will try and preserve at least a small portion of the city to show in the future. Look between the square and the YMCA, broken down gas stations, big business and modern apartment complexes. The "district" area, brick roads, century homes and hopefully a bit of pride when you drive through there. I think it is a positive step and shows that the city is proud of itself, no matter how small an area. If there is another neighborhood, or area, with as much compacted history, let me know. Oh thats right another "historic district" not being complined about, Bank St. Whiners go home, enjoy your city for the good and try and change the bad. Sweep your own sidwalks before you go on telling others how to sweep theirs, thats right I just made a play on words...

The check cashing stores and all the drug stores -- historic -- NOT! Who can forget MarVal Lanes. Now that was historic! Toyland, Parmly, Kresge's, Newbury's, Whaley's Hardware, Isley's, Sterling Shoes, Porostosky's. At least Conway Title kept the look of the historic building when they remodeled. The only buildings that don't seem to change in appearance are the churches.

Someone just pointed me to this blog, so I sat and read about the last months worth of posts. This terminator1, who ever you are, you sound like nothing more than a trouble maker whos has no idea what "facts" are.

The Karen poster, wow, I don't think I have ever read so many negative comments by one person.

Don't think theres much usefull info here, too much opinion, not enough facts.

Very good last post, you my friend tell the truth.

Negative comments are Karen's only opinions
she hates everything about Painesville.

Term. just likes to start trouble, for someone who is soon to be leaving has a lot of negative comments
I get the feeling he hates Painesville.

The reason some people are complaining about the DART 'historic' designation is because there are public funds being used for their group and there is more money being applied for and disbursed by them for this district. I think some people are concerned that decisions may be made that would be arbitrary as to what constitutes important historical preservation.I will take it upon myself to contact this group and see what criteria is being used and also see if any buildings outside the designated district are eligible for funding also.

Very good, but the reason Term. is complaining is he always complains, he does not give anyone a chance to prove they are not screwing the city, he thinks everyone is screwing the city right from the get go.

That is so sad.

He didnt seem to be complaining, just asking a question. He even wished them luck. I think he knows sadly what most of do. Historic Painesville got bulldozed about 40 years ago.

to the last anonymous.very good comment. term tells the truth about things, people dont want to hear the truth about things.thats why they use the catch phrases, like trouble maker, always negative, term was born and raised in the area and has seen a lot of mismanagement in all areas of the city goverment.WE SHOULD ALL SUPPORT HIM. HE WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT CITY MANAGER OR MAYOR. WE ALL WOULD SEE AN IMMEDIATE RESOLUTION TO SOME OF OUR PROBLEMS IN THE CITY.

Term knows he not qualified to be city manager, but he's qualified to know the person holding the position isnt qualified for the job either.

anonymous, aren't we full of hatred? Since you obviously do not want to be part of the solution which is what TERM is trying to get people to think about, then you must be part of the problem. Is your name Rita? How about Joe. Or maybe even smiling Paul.

Or it could be Hal, Andy or Arlene

The post about the spelling why don't you ever correct Term. ?

Jeeze....... I jumped on to see what bloggers were saying about the Historic District and DART...... didn't Term was getting hung out to dry or put on the ballot for mayor! Do think he should think about running for council.....

Back to History....... The Lake County Historical Group just had their Little Mtn. Folk Festival a few days ago. Did anybody go? We should be running over there as fast as we can to welcome them to the community and get on board with them. They are now in our backyard! They have come off the Mountain and back to the "hood", the county seat where it all began. They have review boards, archives, libraries and things very relevant to any town designating Historical Areas.

I don't know who the other anonymous is but I am not a council person. In fact, I doubt council people post here. I posted the spelling thing because I do have to edit my posts thoroughly. I can't seem to type without transposing letters. When typed it was meant to be comical but given the very serious tone of the blog I should make jokes more obvious. I did not mean to insult anyone.

Question for the posters:

What sites do you feel should be designated historic that are not? Just getting a hypothetical list. No negative or sarcastic responses please.
Once we get the list we may be able to figure out how to progress into getting them classified as such.

Boy that big house that sits on the hill across from Evergreen Cemetery is beautiful! I don't know the history on it. Some very cool houses on Casement too....... as well as the Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass panel in Evergreen. We live in the old caretakers house!

Karen,
I am pretty sure the city is commited to help with funding of $22,000 a year for 3 years. The businesses downtown another $22,000 and donations and fundraising another $22,000. Please I am not sure of all of these figures if someone else knows please post. TERM>>
