"YOU GOT A FRIEND" james taylor

You just callout my name
And you know wherever I am

Well back to Painesville!

At last Monday night council meeting two item grabbed my attention what I will tell you neither of the two will change over these posts.

First Councilman Fodor at a May meeting suggested a resolution to increase the city funding for the Downtown Painesville Organization from $22,000 a year to $28,000 a year . Big deal, $6,000 but don't they always tell us these requests take place at budget meeting at the end of the year? Now in the scheme of things $6,000 ain't that much money but when you add all these little amounts up it comes to a healthy amount of money. An extra $1,200 per month to the Senior Center to help cover rent is another example. Now if you been following this blog. for any amount of time I believe this whole DPO is a sham.  So as to you knowing my bias.

Councilman Fodor is a director on the DPO I found it offensive that he would ask for an increase in funding considering his position. Now a council person might listen to his request and think, well Jim's a friend, co-member of this council would I really want to oppose him and make an enemy over $6,000? I considered even asking councilman Fodor to abstain in the vote of this request, but so what 6/0  7/0 makes little difference. This is how the game is played.

See I do believe that the DPO needs the money but that kind of money is spent after the IMPORTANT issues of our city get resolved. A decent Community Center for example to serve all Painesville residents. All this spending while the parking garage falls into disrepair. Recreational items like a pool or waterpark. Don't laugh many communities have all these items. I laugh council doesn't even have it's own chamber to hold meetings using a courtroom. Were are in the process of losing council meetings on channel 12 over old equipment? A Fire Chief that is sent out to procure 20 year-old fire equipment. All this and more and in less then 10 years DPO receives over $200,000, plus Grant and General fund money to the tune of 1.3 MILLION dollars. For Main St. Streetscape. There was never a ribbon cutting no one wanted to be associated with this folly! And what have you got to show for all this spending?

Now go to a homeowner on State St. and ask them how all this DPO money has benefitted them? Go to Chestnut St. ask a resident there? A Jefferson St. resident? Ask a Heisley Park resident? If they even know there is a downtown district? No, to much has been spent already and truthfully if they didn't spend all this money people would still go to Joughin Hardware, Model Bakery Nemeth's Lounge T&T Bakery and the rest nothing would change people shop there for good reason's since 2007 how much more revenue has DPO generated in new businesses? Councilman Fodor tells us the city income tax revenues have increased? Like to see those numbers.

No Painesville has so many other ways to make a better Painesville for EVERYONE!  We have spent enough on those two blocks of downtown where so much has been spent to accomplish so little for so few.

I would like the merchant's from Downtown Painesville to make the request for additional funding themselves to council and explain the end results they expect. Car Shows and Bathtub Races are great I just don't believe it is up to resident's to fund them.

Tomorrow the other issue.

Really, people get their news from Facebook?

NRA supports & endorses Donald Trump. Well their not big into background checks! That explains that.

You are a bit inaccurate. The car show is not paid for by residents, they actually contribute money to the DPO....it is paid for by sponsors and makes money for themselves.....

If the DPO disappeared tomorrow, would the "average" Painesville resident even notice?
If the answer is "no", why are they spending our money?

I completely agree. Downtown is nothing but a black hole at this point, sucking in ridiculous sums of money that could be better spent pretty much anywhere else.

Let's be realistic here. Painesville will never attract the sort of boutiques and bistros like Willoughby has. Who would want to sink any sort of large investment into a town whose preeminent feature of the downtown area is the architecturally grotesque social services building?
All the money spent putting in new sidewalks and plantings is just garish lipstick on a particularly unattractive pig.

The Council continues to be out of touch and out of control. They're following in the footsteps of the Hada regime who never did manage to understand that he and the other council members were elected to serve the public, not vice versa.

I marvel that this city somehow manages to keep on chugging in spite of the continued incompetence of the Council and the city managers. It's time for a complete overhaul, starting with an elected mayor.

Thank you for your continued advocacy and your tenacity in holding the Council's feet to the fire. Since Andy Flock retired it seems like there's even less accountability to the taxpayers and it was already pretty dire even when Andy was around.

Very well written piece. Very clear in it's intent. I do think that the downtown infrastructure should be kept in good repair. This is our town and it should not be allowed to get run down. Downtown is the central show place to the outside world. Even if county government was the only thing left in downtown Painesville, it should be kept up.

Call maintenance of streets, sidewalks and utilities what it is. Upkeep. Yes we need to do a little to keep the area somewhat attractive for business to stay. I guess how much money and what we call it is the issue.

1:28 So to understand the Car Show is on City property, sponsored by corporate sponsors, served by a dedicated group of volunteer's I guess my question is what does DPO do and why are they entitled to any receipt's from the Car Shows?
5:11 Yes it is. Yesterday I witnessed over 10 city employee's cleaning up around Main St. This duty has nothing to do with the DPO. They are carrying out the city's responsibility to downtown. This includes all maintenance items you mentioned. God only knows what that $22,000 a year is used for? I'm willing to listen to an explanation.
5:41 I believe Andy was the reason this $6,000 wasn't brought up last year?
5:41 People such as yourself must convey this to council. Enough is enough.
Supporter's feel free to jump in at any time.

Can someone please clarify, I was told the $6,000.00 would go to paying the health care cost of the DPO employees. How many employees are employed by DPO? Why would a local government pay the healthcare cost of a non-profit group? Is this standard operating procedure in other Cities?

8:44 It would go to pay the hospitalization costs to the DPO.
Better question is why would a local government fund a non-profit that only a few benefit from?

There are 2 employees, the executive director and a 20 hour per week office manager. The office manager does not need insurance (gets it through the her spouse), so must be the director?

How convenient the DPO has such close ties to the Painesville schools? Along with that comment a retired school administrator and former school employee would be one of DPO biggest supporters. The director is buds with PCLS superintendent and the office manager(was there an ad for this job)is married to a PCLS teacher. Hmmm. perhaps some more mafia-hand shaking?

10:34 You do have to wonder? What exactly would you need a secretary for in this position? Now that 'new' money goes to pay the directors health insurance and someday he moves on. The next director has hospitalization, do you believe DPO would give the $6,000 back?
Why not sign him up for Obamacare? or pay the insurance out of the $22,000 the city already contributes?
Yes I remember a time out of the clear blue sky Joseph Hada had council vote to forgive PCLS over $100,000 in fees as well as permits, his wife sat on the school board at the time.. The catch was the State of Ohio would have paid 75% of those costs?
In many ways we wish the schools and the city co-operated more for good reasons. What are friends for anyway? I believe this will pass on first reading and it will just be another memory.

No Mafia, just a bunch of citizens that don't care where the money goes!

Like Term suggest what do you need a secretary for? Also lets examine the relationships between the super and the director?

You make an excellent point that the merchant's come to council and ask for the additional money. Not have Fodor or a director have the people who will benefit from additional funds? The way it is now they can sit down at Your Vine or Mine and wait for the money to arrive.
