"SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN" poison

And give me something to believe in

If you caught yesterday's News-Herald you might have read the story about the new Mentor-on-the Lake council overriding Mayor David Eva's veto of joining Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandell Ohio Checkbook program. He along with the city finance director Kip Molenaar  opposed joining for it being a "big waste of money" as well as the Mayor's claim that "we do more with less here in Mentor-on-the- Lake.

Seems somewhat odd any public entity would oppose this?

I suggested month's ago for Painesville City Council inquire about this program and their claim was they were "looking into it" Along with their concern's on the cost of the program. As I looked into the program the State of Ohio charges Zero to join this on-line service and the only cost would be for the city to input the data. Extra time now that the leaf program has gone by the wayside? Along with stories of electric plant worker's (not line worker's) collecting overtime doing some city labor?

This on line service would let us see what Painesville spends from outside legal aid (Buckingham Doolittle and Burroughs) made a ton of money off this city a decade ago. The price of a pick-up truck or police car compared to what other communities pay? Heck we can even compare surveying prices between different communities.

You send a city official to a conference and you can see where they stayed at a Trump Resort or a Holiday Inn.

Everything would be transparent everything. Now why wouldn't a public entity want this?

I will suggest at Painesville Board of Education Meeting Monday they also join Ohio Checkbook. Just like our neighbors to the west did. Mentor Public Schools.

Now remember we live in a community that brags about the awards they receive in city finances, well show it all to us!

I'll go out on a limb here but it's a pretty good bet Painesville City as well as our School System will be the last around or ever it they ever even  join this program. You want to know why? It's a proven fact no one cares where and what for the money goes around here. Apathy has a very expensive price! Trust us!

Pretty reasonable debate last night, although Trump believed the students in Tenement Square were rioter's. Thankfully our governor set him straight.
Am I also to understand if you are being escorted out of a Trump rally you can be sucker punched and be the person arrested? Or is simply if you oppose Trump you must be an ISIS sympathizer?
And in closing if a candidate calls you  "Pathological' like a child molester you join his campaign?  This is starting to look more like a mob than a movement.

As a general rule, I am opposed to more government programs. Most of them seem to be "busy work" for patronage type of jobs.
However, if this one is like you describe, why would out City Fathers (and Mothers) not want to be involved? It should show us how wisely our tax dollars are spent and that we are getting the most bang for our bucks.
How about it City Hall, what is the reason for not joining in?

HERE'S more money going to another government program.
This is really happening! Painesville City Schools' Nutrition Services' Mobile Summer Food Service Program (hereafter to be called The Lunch Box) - phase 1. Get a used trailer and tear out the insides. Stay tuned for Phase 2 in April. We will feed kids aged 18 and under around the city this summer at no cost. I am so excited that this is becoming a reality!

If it involves physically imputting all the information from their system I can understand the resistance as that takes time and the possibility for errors. If they can simply upload the information from their current system to the state system I see no problem with that.

It's in the best interest of council to not join the Checkbook program; they can deal with the few "usual suspects", such as you, who show up at council meetings to point out their errors and misdeeds. They're certainly not going to make it easier to add to your ranks by providing incentive in the form of open records that highlight their incompetence. Council, certainly, counts on keeping apathy as the status quo of those who vote, and has done so for as long as I've lived in Painesville. They're not going to do anything to wake up the electorate. I'm sure City Hall would agree with this sentiment.

Vote Trump.

This shouldn't even be an option. This should be MANDATORY. This is our money being spent, not council's. How do we not have a right to see how it is spent? Clearly they have something to hide, or they would have no problem showing this to everyone.

4:03 The administration works for council. Council works for us. It's a simple request.
4:58 I must say that is one of the nicest comments I've ever read here.
12:42 We should ask?

While the theory of 12:42 is accurate, I would say that if it works for the betterment of everyone, it should not be an option.
A comparison would be the local auto parts store or grocery store. When computerized inventory programs came along, it was a lot of work to get the needed data into the inventory programs. No doubt about that.
However, now they are able to tell exactly how many items they have in stock and when the stock reaches a predetermined level more stock is ordered.
Additionally when it comes time to do inventory, for tax purposes, there is no doubt as to what they have in stock.
There is likely no company in this country that hasn't computerized their records and data files.
Why should the City (and the City Schools) be any different. Long term it makes the most sense.

My 2 cents.
If its just a matter of cut & paste easy transfer of our info to the state to get this "Check Book" thing done, it should be done. If it requires hiring a body to do it, that's a problem. However, its not a big problem.

No doubt, the city would have to deal with a lot of people questioning many items in the data. So much so that that body doing the data transfer to the state would also be recording the inquires. Now we are are talking about a full time hire or re-assign.

If the city were to resist the "Checkbook" thing based on these real facts, it would make sense. But basically, I am on board with "Checkbook."

Jim, I understand comparing government to a grocery store. But government doesn't DO what is, so obviously, a good thing. They are government. And you can take THAT, to the bank.

Want to try again?
I have read your post several times and it still makes no sense to me.
I can't even tell if you are in agreement with my post or if you are on the other side.
Either is fine but you need to slow down and write more clearly.

Jim, read my post slowly as if I were speaking to you. A comma, is a pause.

I agree with you that government should do smart things like the stores you mentioned. I agree that "Checkbook" should be done. What I'm saying is that government can't get out of it own way. Government it the problem. They have an inexhaustible supply of tax money to spend. They don't want to held accountable for anything. They think they are smarter than you are, about everything. If they were transported into the private sector, most of them would be fired in a month. Sorry I couldn't be more clear. If government worked like public sector business, our tax bills would be HALF.

First, try to not speak down to me.
That was what I tried doing and it still did not work
I know the purpose of a comma and the way you wrote the first post is not it.
I should be able to remove the part between the commas and the sentence should still make sense. It didn't. Maybe to you but likely no one else.
BTW, the way you used the comma in the sentence concerning a "pause" is not correct. There would be no need for a pause there.

The good news is that we agree.
IMO, government is here to do for all of us what we can not do individually. Building roads, fire and police protection, and education are things that come to mind.
The point you make is spot on. Ever wonder why any government building costs more than double what the same building would cost if built privately. Too many hands in the cookie jar.
Thanks!

Our neighbor to the west is one of the top rated schools in the state, has one of the best athletics in the area and the superintendent just made the front page. They also passed a huge tax levy. Most school districts are far better so if you are going to compare it should be apples to apples not apples to prunes. Lower the bar.

5:26 all I can say is thinking like this explains where and why the city presently is in it's present state? Lower the bar?
It can't get any lower!
Enjoy your house selling for 40% lower then in the neighbor to the west also.
