UH donates defibrillators to Geauga County Sheriff Office

University Hospital Geauga Medical Center is putting lifesaving technology into the communities it serves.

The hospital donated 15 new automated External defibrillators to the Geauga County Sheriff Office for use in department vehicles by first responders.

Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the U.S. according to the American Heart Association, and AED's have been shown to dramatically increase the survival rate for victims

The newest AED's electronically analyze a victim heart rhythm and prompt the rescuer to deliver a shock when necessary.

"The best way for out-of-hospital cardiac -arrest survival rates to improve is to have trained rescuers with proper resources delivering immediate care to patients," said M. Steven Jones, president UH Geauga Medical Center. "Every minute counts for improved outcomes of sudden cardiac arrest"

I guess it might not be asking for to much for our patrol cars to be as equipped as Geauga County Sheriff cruisers are? They have EMS units in most localities in the county?

Something for our Safety Director and Police Chief to contemplate on.

I agree, love to have these in our patrol cars. I'll bet it's such a good idea POC will pay for it!

11:32 Maybe we should ask council the next time Community Block Grants come up? What a concept something that benefits all of Painesville not just the downtown area.

"The best way for out of hospital cardiac-arrest survival rates to improve is to have trained rescuers with proper resources delivering immediate care to patients". The key here is 'properly trained' and 'proper resources'. Painesville has problems supplying trained personal and reliable equipment. Our Fire Chief told Mr. Flock that even if the Fire Truck were available we could not use it on the Kensington fire because they didn't have enough properly trained personnel that morning. The CM told us that we had 6 drivers available but were down to 2 working trucks. A city employee told me that 'sure the utilities have AED but majority of employees have allowed their certification to lapse". I don't suggest that we give the Police AED's unless they are properly trained and want to give first aid. One policeman told me he wants no part of First Aid, Besides, according to the Chief we are 90 seconds away from EMS.

10:57 might want to be a better listener next time. Wasnt enough properly trained personnel, there wasn't enought personnel period. For the single busiest fire station in the county they are very under manned. We have done this dance already, with the overwhelming ammount of rescue calls and there are many needless calls. I remember Ms. Dinallo being involved in trying to educate the community regarding this and people still call for a cold at 3AM. So really the fault and problem lies within those residents using EMS as a taxi service so when it is needed, EMS won't be around and will need mutual aid. Oh, but you blog people don't agree with that either do you? So deal with what you are given unless you want to pay more taxes. Nothing makes you people happy other than complaining.

3:25 All I ever hear is we are the busiest fire station in the county. I believe that is true. So doesn't it make some sense to have more first responders trained in life-saving measures? If PPD patrolmen don't want to be well that's another issue. Police departments all over the state and country are trained and retrained. I believe these are good people that would welcome a solution? I think everyone responding here on the blog. is just looking for solutions. So it comes down to are we doing rescue or are we a taxi cab? I will call the chief and ask what his manpower per shift. Maybe the solution could be workable.

Ha, Good Luck. NO MONEY TO HIRE people, and remember that another said about FD budget not increased even though a levy was passed. Why???? While you are asking maybe you could what the comparables are for their budget. Meaning: What does thier 2015 budget compare to - 2000, 2005,2012? To see when if any increases were given. You may be surprised at that answer. They have been given the short end of the stick for many years (just ask the past few chiefs)

TO 3:25 I remember JAMES FODOR at a council meeting made a remark, about the city, becoming a TAXI SERVICE. He was going to look in-to it. NO follow up as of yet. (This was during his first term )

5:49 Councilman's Fodor comment about a Taxi Service is correct due to litigation the city has little choice on what they could do.

I have a call into the Fire Chief about present staffing, I will let you know.
