"HEAR MY TRAIN A COMIN' jimi hendrix

Thursdays, Town Hall Meeting had one of the best turnouts in recent memory. Of course the main reason was for the city to explain how this train station property can become an historical district. It also gave the train station people a view of what the group future plans for the station were what they had accomplished and what they would like to accomplish.

Much ground was covered as well as an education into the historical value of this property.

Mr. Art Shamakian brought up the most interesting thought of the night. With people staying overnight at the Manor they ask where and what is there exactly  to see in Painesville? I guess Art hadn't given that much thought to that idea, to busy resurrection a building from the past. Things like the train station attract outside people and money.

If you think about it Painesville presently is in flux. We built five new schools, a new library, but at the same time lost much of our history dating as far back to the 60's. I guess the best way to judge a community is not only how it moves forward but what it believes is important to save from our past. I guess I finally realized all the changes taken place around here in just my short life. The hospital I was born in is gone. The elementary school, junior high as well as the building I went to high school in. The name stayed but the building is gone. Some of the places that were part of my everyday life have vanished. I can understand it being like the circle of life but there are things of value  the are important and represent the culture of our city. Someone once claimed to me that the train depot on Railroad Street was like the Ellis Island of Painesville. How many Painesville families arrived in this city by train? What an opportunity for future generations to walk where ancestors  once walked.

Painesville has had a rich and proud railroad history at one time three major railroads dissected  Painesville The New York Central (CSX) Nickel Plate Road (NS) the location of that  station was on the north side of the tracks on South State street next to D'Abates. As  well as the Baltimore and Ohio that at the time was the Lake Branch running from New Castle Pa. to Fairport Harbor to the coal docks. At the time this was the railroads last bastion for the steam locomotive with the EM-1's the largest steam engines east of the Mississippi calling Painesville home. The present school bus parking lot was where the former freight station and  three stall engine house stood. The line was abandoned  in the 80's and is that Lake Metro Park calls the rails to trails Greenway Corridor that heads south out of Painesville.

Train station the Ellis Island of Painesville? Not even close. When People came to Ellis IS. there were rules to follow. No rules when coming to PVille by train. I've finally figured it out about this town - I think there is a lot of confusion between the Grand River and the Rio Grande.

Hmmmmm, all those ancient sticks and stones relegated to your distant twisted memories. Wondering why you can't disappear with all that old rubble? Maybe this decrepit 'Ville of yours could finally get something positive in motion instead of having you and your ancient thinking cronies mucking everything up with your inane ramblings.

4:59 it's owned by a 501 the Painesville railroad museum.
1:01 Glad In won't be around to see your results. Best of Luck though.

12:33 Right on track no matter what the subject it all becomes about illegals?

I bet I could post a recipe on how to make a chocolate cake and you or one of you would complain that an illegal stole the sugar out of the cake?

It has become very familiar to many of you that seem to believe your failure has been caused by someone else. You guys got control now your legislators talk the talk but, just can't seem to walk the walk. Surprise their donors don't want them too.

One little joke about illegals, and Term goes on his "you people" rant. And now he's saying that people are blaming their own lack of success on the illegals. Nobody has ever said that, so give that a rest. Running out of things to say to defend the fact that you think it's funny that we are being overrun by illegal people in our country? Maybe you could explain to all the families of service people who lost their lives defending this country how you are sitting around doing nothing while the country's jobs, identify and treasure is being pilfered by illegal people from other countries.

Good TERM. Finally got the answer. In the history about this station, I read that a man purchased the station for development, but never heard that the museum people finally got the deed. Excellent.

Great to see you people again, and again. What happened to this big deportation push coming out of your congress, let's talk about that? Not one word about deportation odd uh? Sorry the donor-class of your party have no stomach for it and since they pay the freight you pay the fiddler. Be angry at me all you want it doesn't solve the problem. Your problem doesn't lie with me, does it?
6:53 A Mr. Dunlap purchased the station in hopes of refurnishing it into a restaurant it became cost prohibited and signed the deed over to the museum people as a 501C.

Sugar out of the cake now that's funny!
In my life I have always wondered how on person or one group of people can turn all their anger and frustration on one group of people. A good example is what the Germans did to the Jew's in the 1930.
As some of your poster's have exclaimed the United States would be a bed of roses if we just got rid of a few illegal fleas? The way things are presently going how long before some leader on the far-right decides that genocide may be the answer?
Most of us would suggest a workable solution to this problem without all the hate thrown in. They came here looking for a better life at our request mind you and now they are treated as criminals with there accusers hiding behind anonymous comments.
They lash out at you because they fear publicly lashing out at the people involved.
Like you I wish them luck, but will keep an eye on them.

Some of your commenters seem to have a bit of hate in their sophomoric rants. As one who opposes illegal immigration it gets harder and harder to a line with some of the group. Insulting you or anyone else adds nothing to their dialogue. After 9/11 the border's should have been locked down. Republican President Republican House but no addressing the problem, why? As Term has mentioned someone wanted those people here. There here now they aren't leaving so let's come up with a realistic plan to deal with this.

At February 1, 2015 at 9:42 AM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

8:50/9:27 What you are viewing is the death of the Republican Party. Some on that side will push the party so far to the right that in the end will just become a regional party. All this is taking them no place. Ted Cruz? Born in Canada of an American mother and Cuban nationalist? Sound somewhat familiar? But it's O.K. now. The party's only chance at survival is if Jeb Bush gets the nomination, bet's are he won't and the party will drift down into one where people claiming others of having Canolope arms and stealing sugar out of cakes.
Wonder where the Christian right ends up?

Are you kidding, 9:44? Sucked in? The first poster made an observation and a little joke, and you went off with your usual vehemence against the people who are against non-Americans breaking our laws - even to the point of saying that "these people" blame their lack of success in life on the illegals???!!! Give me a break...sucked in...I don't think so.

I don't think it's a Christian thing - I'm a Christian but I have to obey the law. Why don't the illegals? 8:50 comparison to Hitler is totally insane. It has nothing to do with that at all. 9:46 PM-I'd like to meet you- like your point. 9:27-Someone wanted these people here, hardly. The entire point is legal vs. illegal - DO IT RIGHT, no problem. Keep sneaking, breaking the law, taking welfare, medical - YOU ARE WRONG.

Oh how I love these comments. I have known Term for over 35 years and believe me if anyone was sucked in it was you guys. Through your comments Term has managed to paint most of you as red-neck haters, racist, uncaring people who's only solution is to totally get rid of illegals. He played you people like a flute.
I guess he also gets much joy out of pointing thing like Ted Cruz out to you in hopes that you don't notice the man can't legally become President. I once supported your movement but after he has brought some of you to the surface so there is no way I want to be associated with you. He at least tempers his argument yet most of you show no compasission to those involved. Your way or the highway. Maybe some of you should read what you have just written before you hit that send button your words are being used againt you. Very convincingly I might add.

10:34 Think you know me? Well let's say I do enjoy playing devil advocate but when I post something about a train station and these people jump in with a conversation about illegal this or that it does touch a nerve.( I do have a delete button) Look in the beginning I for the most part supported these people but as conversations and meeting went on I knew I couldn't be associated with the likes of some of these people. At the same time I believed on the other side the leadership was just as bad as the group that opposed them. Sorry V.D. under no conditions do you let little children drag the American flag in the dirt let alone not getting a permit to have a demonstration. Then bringing some clown to town claiming he wanted HIS land back. At the same time neither group wants to give an inch. Most of the people who want legalization are good people. As well as most people that want the illegal immigration of our country to end. Problem is most factions on either side looks not to resolve anything but to insure their views are the only ones to respect.
I don't understand why they come here to comment but as you stated you get to learn what there all about.

I went back and read the original post.
Imagine my surprise at seeing that there was not a single word illegal immigrants. The closest Term came was making a reference to the train station being like our version of Ellis Island.
Really, that is the best you can do in your efforts to make others dislike Term?
There are problems in this City and in this country but the train station is not one of them.
As teachers are prone to say, let's stay on topic.

Not gonna get involved with the moronic discussions going on above.

Back to the rail discussion: I'm pretty sure the rail line that ran up to Fairport was the FP&E (Fairport, Painesville, & Eastern) and it was taken over by N&S in the '60s, then folded in the '80s. The rails are all Norfolk-Southern now.

11:45 Thank-you I don't need anymore dislikes.
2:21True but he was born in a United States Hawaii right? Seems Ted was born a northern cousin?

Adam sorta right. The FP&E as pretty much in business to serve the Diamond as well as Industrial Rayon. Transfer of most cars came from the east via New York Central (CSX) and Nickel Plate (NS) heading west and north it traveled pretty much along side Fairport-Nursery Rd. an enginehouse and turntable just west of the diamond plant . It crossed the B&O pretty much where it crosses High St. now and the Diamond owned that large storage tank and property along side of it. The B&O Fairport low yard started where it crossed the Grand River alongside Richmond St. and the yard went as far as where the tracks cross High St. Tracks continued along side the Grand River to a coal dumper where coal cars were unloaded into lake boats.
The high yard or the car shop yard was that empty field where the track that goes into Grand River and the B&O serviced a company Staleys that had something to do with beans? Just a guess but engine crews would always laugh when the slack was taken out of a train someone would comment "more beans on the ground." Hope this helps there is an internet page on the FP&E and one of the switch engines is still owned by the AC&J in Jefferson,Ohio.

Terms, not wise thinking putting himself out there for the hooligans to screw with. I can't understand the anger directed at him either. Do any of these people watch the news or read a newspaper?

At February 2, 2015 at 5:30 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

11:45, just FYI - Nobody said anything about illegals to make Term look bad. The first poster made an observation and a little joke about illegals, and Term jumped in both feet against anyone who doesn't like the illegals, and even went so far as to say that they didn't like illegals because they blame them for a lack of success in their own lives, He also took the opportunity AGAIN to say how much he personally dislikes the people around here who fight against illegals, as if that has anything to do with the price of bread. He went off on his own tirade. Nobody sucked him in or made him look bad; he did that all by himself. Talk about twisting the yarn.

The Ellis Island equating to the train station was open for discussion, anyone ever been to Ellis Island? If you have, you would see the TRUE meaning there - of coming into America - legally and with conditions. You could not be sick, you needed to be checked over by a doctor. You had to prove you were an able bodied person, capable of being employed - not a drain on the already strained system. There were many other conditions but of the 2 I remember, how many Illegals could stay here under those 2 provisions? THAT IS why those were put in place so we would not have the fiasco as we have now. There was no intentional effort to "make" others dislike Term. If you wish to dislike-dislike those that are breaking our countries laws. He has nothing to do with that, only sticking up for how many thousands of criminals.

Term 9:42. The death of the Republican party? They just beat the stuffing out of the Democrats in the last election. Did you notice? And that's saying a lot, considering the Republicans almost lost our entire country in a financial collapse. But still people preferred them over the Democrats, whose party has turned into something even worse than the Republicans - hard to believe, but clearly I'm not the only one that thinks that. Again, look at the results of the last election, and then say the Republican party is almost over. And you would rather lose America to illegals than to side against the Democrats on even one issue. I have no more respect for the Democrats and people like you, even though I have been a Democrat all my six decades of life, and apparently I am not alone. It's a sad day when the Democrats are more frightening than the Republicans, but that day has certainly arrived.

Off topic (not sure what the topic is any more) but as I tried to get through my unplowed street this morning, and noticing no sidewalks plowed, I wanted to suggest that all those people sitting at the electric plant doing nothing but playing cards get off their butts and drive the little sidewalk plows around. You are getting paid with benefits for doing nothing right now. Why not earn at least a little of that pay. Also, why not have them be our garbage pickup provider? They are already being paid, and again with benefits, so why not put them to work as a city run garbage company. This service would be provided free to residents as we are already paying them their salary and benefits for doing nothing now. Just a suggestion.

4:19 And when was the last time you won a national election?
12:13 Can't wait to see how that Homeland Security Bill comes back to bite some of you?
3:11 Well his birth certificate claims he was born in Calgary, Alberta Canada in 1970 to an American mother and a Cuban nationalist father who fought with Castro (claims he didn't know he was a communist?) And his father didn't become a nationalized U.S. citizen until 2005, how convenient. All I can say is thank God he isn't a Democrat or the birther's would crucify him if he ran for President. Rules are rules.

If by 'Liberal' they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people-their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and the suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by "Liberal" then I'm proud to say I'm a 'Liberal' [Democrat].
