"TIME IN A BOTTLE" jim croce

Maybe it's just me but the word that comes to mind when I view the Main Street Streetscape project well "unimpressed" Sorry this is what $1,400,000 gets us?

Look we constantly do this dance every so often.  About every seven years on how to attract people to our downtown?

It's not that hard of a question you have to have a reason for people who want to shop there, and line up merchants who believe they can make a profit there. It's Business Management 101.

In my heart of hearts I believe that 1.4 million dollars could have benefited the residents of Painesville in a more positive way. What you seem to believe is dumping money down a sink hole for a half dozen businesses will be the end all. I believe businesses like Jougins Hardware, Bella Donna and Model Bakery could survive if the street was dirt. Along with the other businesses in downtown. They have loyal customers and a good reputations.

It seem the leaders of our community believe a strong downtown makes the whole city strong? Please take a look around.

Nothing I have seen in Painesville's  downtown makes me believe a grocery chain is even looking in our direction. I hope I'm wrong. In the end isn't that the whole reason for doing this attracting new business?

Now let's look at our holiday shopping. How many of us, me included made purchases on line?
Is the future of our society becoming less and less brick and mortar and more and more cyber shopping? No crowds, no sales tax?  many with free shipping. You have to wonder how long no sales tax  will last?

Maybe Painesville on this issue is ahead of the curve? I even had a small money generating operation until E bay became popular.

I believe soon the businesses in the service sector, resturants, bakeries, auto care will be whats left. With other purchases made online. Maybe even groceries.

Over the years our city leaders have dumped thousands upon thosands in to our Main St. community with little to show for it. When will the madness end?

Really did Painesville need a $3.00 cupcake after all?

I walked the new Main Street and I am wondering if the city will be sued when somebody drops into the trough for rainwater? It's quite a drop, someone could break a leg. I know it's to keep run off out of the sewers but is that cheaper than a lawsuit? Taste of Painesville, lots of people, lots of eating and talking and beer. What could go wrong?

Sandy, I thought of that too. Never realizing there will be times people actually go downtown. Mr. Volpe sold someone a bill of goods. Less parking, less street and more sidewalk?

Since this blog is about downtown Painesville, I have question for your readers.
Has anyone else noticed the huge change in the red light cycle times on Main and State St? I first became aware back in the late summer.
"Officially" there is no change but I go through that intersection several time every day and I can assure you that something has changed. I can sit north or south bound for a minimum of two minutes (and sometimes closer to three minutes) and usually there is no cross traffic on Main St.
Try it and see.
The same is true at Washington and S State St but it is not as bad as Main and State.
My suggestion is to see what any of you think and if you agree, let your Council person know. I have tried mine but I am hoping that if they get lots of calls or emails, they might put pressure on the folks who regulate the signals. My contacts with my Councilperson have fallen on deaf ears.
Thank you.

You could break a leg just trying to cross North State too. I thought I was going to blow a tire driving through there. If it wasn't for the cold weather and lack of mortar fire, I would have thought I was in Baghdad.

5:12 I believe State St will be repaved this year along with Erie St12:18 Believe me your not the only one who have noticed many of the traffic light out of sync.
Main St. and State St that one is just a joke with many more that can be added to the list.
Painesville spent a ton of money on traffic lights a decade ago and I don't believe anyone in the city was trained to reset them. Many times I see an outside contractor working on traffic lights.
Call your council person? Good luck with that being a solution the city will tell them there's no problem. Maybe you have been down that road?
Could be the lights are now on horse carriage time or Clydesdale time?

Without a lot of (understandably) sarcastic commentary in response, I have a serious question: What's the story on the hospital site. A year ago (wasn't it?) it was deemed to be the future spot for some huge development project (a la New Market Mall. See how well that worked out? Oops, not I'm being sarcastic!) called High Pointe Center. Is there some real "teeth" to this project, or is it just some vague pie-in-the-sky possibility?

Clydesdale? Where and when. I think I missed it the last time.

10:46 Did you ever watch the "Wizard of OZ"? You know the
Emerald City?

First we teardown a useful building then some guy named Zareuba comes in with plans for "Chicago Style Housing expensively priced with a view overlooking a storage building, public housing ,a drug store and a Mexican Grocery store? After the oohhs and ahhs we got nothin'. Now we give it a new name "High Point Center" and I'm still seeing nothin'. Smoke and mirrors just no brick and mortar. I have heard just about everything proposed for that site. From a Sheetz gas station to a Chipoles? Maybe Nordstrom will build on the site
5:12 There were two of them pulling a wagon around Veterans Park last Saturday. No Bud's on board just Painesville little ones.

Nordstrom?? wow, and I thought Carlisle's was upscale back in the day (at least our family did. we had to buy socks and underwear at the 1930's vintage Sears Roebuck & Co. across the park! lol). Hey, a supermarket would be nice!!! How about a Whole Foods?

If those houses on Washington Street were bulldozed, they could build a drag strip from Gillette to St. Clair. What happened to the Lake Erie College Commons sign?

4:32 Whole Foods only expands in communities of high income. You ever shop at one? I guess we would have as much chance as a Nordstom.

Maybe a produce market? Even Fairport has one of them.

5:40 I guess the college presently have the finances presently to move forward?

President Victor worked a lot of magic his first couple of years. Now enrollment has dropped and money is scarce. There is no current plan for the old Harvey site.

^I was just being a little facetious with the Whole Foods suggestion, but what about a Trader Joe's? They're actually very reasonably priced. In fact, I find some of their store brand stuff cheaper than regular supermarkets. However they too look for higher income demographics. But when you look at the surrounding suburban areas of P'ville, you have those more affluent people, and Lake Erie College, while not very large, also has the younger crowd attracted to a place like Trader Joe's. Also doesn't Whole Foods have a lower priced alternative chain of stores? I think I had read that once.

Hey I saw PPD at the new Get GO. Isn't a shame our safety forces have to go to the township to shop? And what if, a train gets stopped with them on the other side of the tracks? Hmmm, who's going to respond if they're stuck? It's a real shame there is no grocery store in Painesville.

3:44 I believe you are correct.
9:45 Trader Joe's two nearby locations Chagrin Blvd. Beachwood.
Crocker Park Westlake. Not to Painesvillie.

Menards is thinking about building at Diamond Center not in Painesville but almost on the line to Painesville. Just like Giant Eagle. It's like the property in Painesville's side of the line is cursed?
1:19 At Giant Eagle or Get Go what time of the day? It could result in an embarrassing situation. I wonder what PPD policy is on this?

What possibly could the cop be buying and the GetGo that he could not buy in the city limits?

7:35 Thats why I asked about the time. At 4:00 just about anything. Lets also think he had just patroled Heisley Park and need to relieve himself. and went to the GET GO instead of driving to the station?
