"OUR HOUSE" crosby, stills, nash & young

Well the council meeting. I will try to put this all together for you.

Let's start with the Public Hearing on the Barnes Ave. Rezoning these three homes sit on a site where none of them have access to a driveway let alone a garage. Someone mentioned .02 acres now I don't know if that was total or for each house? Let's just agree these are small homes built on small lots on a street that doesn't exist. Well after listening to Arlene Becks speak on the merits of the rezoning I spoke against it. These are rental properties and as the pictures show not much maintience has been done. They do generate income for the property owners but in no way shape or form can any of these three dwelling fit what is an R-1 classification. Pretty simple considering the city is trying to get rid of non-conforming property zoning in the city. But three council people  for some reason believed this was fine with them and voted to approve the zoning change. Tom Fitzgerald, Katie Jenkins and Paul Hach voted YES voting NO against the change Lori DiNallo, Andy Flock and Jim Fodor. Councilman DeLeone who's absence was excused was the reason for the tie. 3-3 the measure failed you need at least four votes for passage. My only question to the three who voted for the change, Why? Why bother voting for ordinances then agreeing to change them? Look I understand someone seeking a variance for minor changes but nothing in the rules of the City of Painesville make this change viable. No problem with this  for over 50 years now there's a problem. Maybe these council people want to be generous? Fine then change the Ordinance's, Could there have been another factor at work here? As I mention to council we wouldn't be having this conversation if these homes were say on Levan Dr. so I guess I remain confused as to what they had in mind. Maybe they didn't want to upset Arlene? These kind of votes scare me.

Still looking for someone to buy the cemeteries. Good Luck with that. I don't see anyone dying to make that deal.

239 Mentor Ave Demolish an unsafe property? Please, don't give me anymore Bull about "Historic Downtown Painesville" turn around and your gone! When our assistant city manager suggests apartments could be built on the site? Yes Mr. Lewis another apartment building in the Mentor Ave. Historical District we need that like I need another, forget about it. Look don't keep blowing smoke up my when every chance you get something old is gone.. As today's News-Herald  headline... Razing this old house. This house is only been a Painesville home since the early 1800's. yet on closer inspection it has new Anderson glass in for windows. Is it really in as bad of shape as suggested? I see abandoned houses in town in far worse shape, begs to ask who decides which stays and which goes? Now in steps Arthur Shamakian with a desire to save and restore it. He must be  a masochist  or something. After all the problems he's had a the mansion he's asking for more? Wait! Hey Art can I show you a nice railroad station in need of some TLC?

Economic Development Department gave a report it included  the Downtown Streetscape, the razing of the hotel, to developing the old Coe Manufacturing property. Also the old hospital site it's no longer called the old hospital site. Its now High Pointe Centre. Plans on the table include housing (Chicago) style??? maybe ( sorry that was the last administration's stik) even a 30,000 sq.ft. grocery store are included in the plans. Well we can dream can't we?

I just read the News Herald article on 239 Mentor Ave.
Once again, this City is doing something something ONLY because there is "free money" to do it.
We sure as hell would not be tearing it down with City dollars.
Furthermore, just like when the north side of Main St was demolished, we have no idea what will be done with the property. We just want to tear it down.
IMO, the City should find out where the title stands, get the rights to it, and offer the property for sale. The bank has no reason to do anything because they are going to get their money regardless.
After all, we have a ton of people under the golden dome that need something to do.
This property is historic and the City needs to take extraordinary measures to save it.

2:04 Your probably right the minute the word "Free" came up so didn't the Meerkats heads. That magic word. Sometimes free is really free.
That house was chosen why?

I am also afraid when Council members listen to, or agree with, Arlene.
We really need to know WHY they voted as they did on Barnes Ave. Nothing I have heard or read makes any sense of it.
As I have seen before, follow the money and see how the vote goes.
Thankfully we have at least three Council members who did some thinking.

How in the world could Painesville desire to destroy a home built in the early 1800`s? Nothing has changed in their thinking, has it?

9:10 It's FREE! PLUS a chance for more apartments in the Ville'
6:59 I've even emailed a councilman to explain what I and others seem to have missed. No reply, no good answer?
Just maybe some on council don't want to step on the toes of certain people in town? Yes I'm speaking of the African-American community. Doesn't mean ordinances should be ignored. The home is in a predominantly Black neighborhood, as well as the owner of the property that was at the meeting being Black. I wonder if Ms. Becks would have been so moved if those homes were owned by some Swedish landlords? Look the lady that opposed the change at the planning meeting was also Black wonder why her thoughts were not listened to? Maybe she should have taken Ms. Becks to that meeting.

To any of you who might be interested in the faith of 239 Mentor Ave. it seems some at city hall is blowing smoke up our... again. Did a little research on the Lake County Auditors site and guess what? Seems the paperwork has already been taken out to raze the house? This house is appraised at $91,000? Yet council hasn't even voted one way or the other. What gives and why? Who is playing Oz in Painesville now?

Hmm, makes one wonder how one can take out a permit for something when there is no funding in place??
I suppose the logical answer is that just because a permit has been issued does not mean the work will be performed.
BTW, who's name is on the permit for demolition?

So, no actual name of a person who is responsible or as a contact? Imagine my surprise.

You know your telling us what everybody is thinking. Thank-You
Arlene Becks has an agenda and it doesn't include everyone in town.

6:54 no surprise they will tell you they only want to be prepared if council should vote to raze the property. The problem with city hall is there are competent people there but no real love for the heritage of Painesville. It's a job PERIOD
Look Arlene has been given time on council and what were her accomplishments? I always noticed the former city manager and council-president handled her with kid gloves. Once I asked her why she voted for something and her quote was "that's what we do, vote" That's probably why we are where we are?

I think Arlene Becks was horrible on council. She's another one we just can't seem to get rid of.

Reader; wouldn't it been easier to just comment that he went to school with Arlene and wasn't impressed? It's only his opinion.
Also Arlene graduated from Cleveland State with honors. Just saying.

Term,
What does that say? That she is really intelligent or that CSU passes out grades?
I have watched her "speeches" and I am pretty sure I know the answer.

Just because someone has a degree, does not necessarily make them all smart. Some folks are book smart with some lacking common sense. Just Saying.

12:31/2:38 Not saying anything just stating a fact and I can also agree with both of your comments. Point is since Ms. Becks is getting involved in Painesville politics again. I can only assume she will run for the council seat in Ward IV.
2:38 Your statement could involve more than just Ms. Becks.

Term, Let's face facts. Tom Fitzgerald, Katie Jenkins and Paul Hach with the blessing of Arlene Becks did nothing Monday night but promote slum properties in the city of Painesville. They should be ashamed.

8:36 I can't help but agree with you. As I mentioned to council we wouldn't be having this discussion if these properties were off Levan Ave.
Also in Sunday's News-Herald there is an editorial about 239 Mentor Ave. Some should take pay attention. Look with all the abandoned property in town who decided that THIS address had to go and why? People doing their jobs with Painesville best interests at hand? Maybe someone should ask Mentor assistant manager Anthony Zampedro? What he thinks?

At October 26, 2014 at 9:48 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:36 In the end those four either didn't care, do their homework and have become advocates for slum properties.

So which of you wonderful people that want to save this property is willing to cough up the money to buy it then turn around and make all the repairs that need done? Nope, didn't think so or someone would have, should have and could have by now. So you see just how easy it is to sit back and be an armchair politician with an opinion about everything and no answers for anything. It figures.

12:11 A little arrogant aren't we? Look when you come up with the invoice that shows you paid to RAZE 239 Mentor Ave. come back and talk to us. Nope didn't think so.
Those are public funds being used to raze the house I guess I or anyone has a right to ask Why?
I guess the only answer you have is tear it down!

9:48 Something tells me we haven't heard the end of this. It ain't over until it's over.

At October 28, 2014 at 12:09 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

NO, not arrogant and I am not in favor of destroying this old house but I am a realist. I do not, nor does anyone else (unless they are waiting for the last shake)have the big bucks to sink into this place. Don't you think someone would have already if they could? It was for sale for how long? NOW everyone's concerned? Money is allotted for certain things and this meets the demolition need not the fix-er-upper need. This town disgusts me whenever I go to downtown Willoughby. McDonald ruined this town and as of late I've seen more and more destruction happening again.

At October 28, 2014 at 3:42 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

12:09 Help me here I am completely confused with what point your trying to make? McDonald's restaurant? Hang on more destruction to come.

At October 28, 2014 at 4:28 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

12:09
You can't buy something that was never really for sale.
As far as someone putting money into a project, look up Mentor Ave a bit. The Steele Mansion was ignored for years but someone (Mr Shamakian) put his money where his mouth is and we will soon have a real gem in the City.
Did anyone apply for "fix up" money instead of tear down money? If not, why not?
"McDonald ruined this town"??? WTH does that mean?

At October 28, 2014 at 5:36 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

4:28 I have the same thoughts. I'm just speculating here but could McDonalds be McMahon? Wild guess.

Term,
I never thought of that connection.
If that is the closest this person can come to the name of the former CM, I am very afraid for this City. IMO, the comments lose all credibility.

At October 29, 2014 at 12:30 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who was the CM that allowed Urban renewal to plow through this town. He, I thought his last name was McDonald, was before Les Nero? Look it up, maybe you'll be surprised or maybe I'm wrong about the name but you don't have to be so rude. You get cranked out at others when they talk smack to you, then you shouldn't do the same. My point was urban renewal was bought into and ruined this town. End of story.

At October 29, 2014 at 12:32 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

How do you say it was never really for sale? I walked that route and saw for sale sign. Not recently, but it was for sale. Maybe after Mr. Betzel left the city?

At October 29, 2014 at 2:50 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

12:30 Read your comment again I believe the city manager you are thingabout was Dale Heizel(sp) who was city manager in 1965. I couldn't connect on McDonald? Look we agree on your comment I really wasn't talking smack to you. I will apoigize for the misunderstanding. Again just a mistake. And don't be disgusted.

At October 29, 2014 at 3:29 PM , Anonymous TERM>> said...

As I write this response I wonder why the city manager was being blamed wasn't council in charge? Or was it as it has been in the last 20 years a council that rubber stamped all of the city managers plans? Looking back there was not much opposition I believed to urban renewal. The people and leaders of Painesville just panicked faced with a growing Mentor along with Malls and a new way consumers purchased items. Don't think they weren't affected by Spartans, Zayres and Giant Tiger. I only hope we learned something from that time.
There is no 'Free' ride.

At October 31, 2014 at 6:17 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why would the city manager from 1965 be a part of the urban renewal comment? That's not his name. In 1965 this town was fine. It was well into the 70's when downtown was destroyed. Again, I believe it was the CM before Les Nero and I'm 99% sure his last name was McDonald and 100% sure his first name wasn't Ronald or Norm. Come on old-timers, help a brotha out.
