"CITY OF NEW ORLEANS" arlo guthrie
Grumpy old man who is on the verge of senility has been accused of only reporting BAD NEGATIVE news well here's something to consider doing tomorrow.
The former railroad station on Railroad St. is having an open house tomorrow. Now this dedicated bunch of people want to not only save the building from say the Hach Excavating Co. but also would like to restore it to somewhat of it's former glory. Built in 1893 for the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad it was considered the nicest station between Cleveland and Buffalo. It severed the Painesville area for the New York Central Railroad in it's heyday. Later due to urban renewal it also served as Painesville's Greyhound Bus Station.
It's worth the time to look around inside as to how it was. Also stand at the fence, for as a young lad there were four main lines and five siding plus the freight station across the tracks. To cross on Elm St. you had nine tracks to travel across. Also at the corner of N.State St. and Storr Ave. Laird Lumber had a large building with a siding that the railcars could be unloaded inside. Also a siding that went to the east side of Painesville's public works building. The freight station, the sidings all but one and along with two main lines are all gone. Sometimes I miss the New York Central lightning -striped locomotives as well as the REA the UPS of the 1950's all gone but left in a grumpy, senile old man's memory. Take a look Saturday, someday you might be asked where was the train station in Painesville?

I could not begin to count the numbers of hours I spent at that station.
Watching freight train pass by.
Watching passengers trains that mostly went by but quite a few stopped too. Beautiful black, grey, and silver engines and passenger cars.
Makes me wonder why there isn't a way to get commuters into downtown Cleveland by rail.
The number of tracks in the yard was quite amazing with all the REA traffic. I watched cars at Laird be unloaded.
I can see the remnants of the siding into the City garage but I can't say I remember it being used.
It was also the last place I remember seeing steam locomotives in use. This was VERY late in their life cycle and I was close to missing it.
I was at the station for an open house a couple of years ago. I certainly remember the basic floor layout but it was tough to see how much has gone away.
I recommend a trip to the station for all the people of Painesville. You never know how much time it has.
Everything costs money. Wonder if the group that wants to do all this owns the property, can get tax deferments, raise money to do what they want, can get features in the News Herald to publicize the effort.
I wish them the best. I rode the train to Cleveland with my elementary school class. What fun.
I would love to see that place again. I remember my great aunt from Toronto would visit by train in the 60's and meeting her there. I hope they'll be able to restore it!
Forget All you need is Love, Cash is what is needed. I was told today to heat that building in the winter costs over $4000.00.
10:46 Relish the memories
While riding to Cleveland, seeing the railroad tracks when you'd flush the toilet was such a thrill. After the first report of the view, the whole class had to use the can.
So keep it above freezing....what was the inside temp in the winter in 1952? Would interior insulation cover historically significant architecture?
OK, so who went and what did you see? I was stuck on a job and couldn't go.
Does Hach own it? If they don't own it, its not their fault its coming down. They were just hired to do a job. Is this correct or do the Hachs own this property?
Only 4000.00? Heck, look at whats being done to Unionville Tavern now. Someone should be able to afford this.
5:40 Maybe I didn't make that clear enough January one month at 50 degrees $4000.00.
4:48 Hach doesn't own the building or are there any plans to demolish the building at the present time. The building needs TLC and cash, they have a dedicated group with no resources.
4:09 The property was cleaned up the inside had some railroad artifacts as well as someone building a large HO layout.
Then why did you say "this dedicated bunch of people want to not only save the building from say the Hach Excavating Co?....You have implied yet another story. Why would you even try to start something?
Is it 4000.00 or 400000. or because I don't understand what 4000.00. is. Where is the decimal to be? You did imply it may succumb to Mr. Hach's wrecking ball.
1:01 gas bill $4000.00 a month for January at 50 degrees.
Well, Hach's seems to be the go to company for demolishing around Painesville. If that building becomes unsafe it will come down.
I'll give you something to imply what exactly is Mr. Hach's purpose on council?
LOVE Hach!
People voted him in but you got a problem with him and everyone else. Seems the problem may not be the lucky 7 but all pains point to you.
Big time conflict of interest with Hach on council.
Conflict of interest? PCLS has Mr. J. Haffa. Along with his mother and wife. I believe part of his job deals with the non teaching staff, which is both his mother (secretary) and wife (Spanish teachers aid). How does this happen?
Hach Construction headed by Paul Hach Sr.cannot bid on City Business due to his son being on council as any one on council they have rules of conduct and seem to follow them. Hach Construction was first on the scene of area business to help evacuate flood victims and has done many worthwildconstruction jobs throughout the area along with contributing much of their time/talent..to their community . Should we ban anyone or ones family who choses to serve their community from doing business within city limits or stick with they can't award themselves a contract. Since many people past and present on city council work in or have a business in the city to we make them quit or sell their business. I think Term just simply added Hach construction to keep his 99.99% negativity status.
One of Term's big reasons for bringing Hach up in a negative light? AMP - Ohio and his vote for that misguided deal. Enough of that on this post. I remember visiting the depot a few years ago with a friend that knows a lot about trains. I was pleasantly surprised at the passion and interest an old building can inspire. I was also amazed at all the train buffs in this world. I too, remember going with my parents to pick up my aunt from Alliance, but we went to the Terminal Tower in Cleveland. My aunt would get off the train in gloves, hat, traveling bag, purse and matching shoes. The steam swirled around her feet as the conductor helped her down the steps. Like a snapshot from a 'film noir' movie and a vivid memory for a little girl. I wish the depot well...where can I send a donation?
PCLS WTH is conflict now it has been going on for ever! and the new guy in charge is not helping! wait tell the new levy!! and the new LOWER SCORES!
7:38 Many conflict in PCLS? You seem very conflicted yourself.
I printed this comment because it made some sense. The last couple didn't. What did George W. Bush have to do with PCLS? Slowdown and read it before you send it, please.
